3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS October was an exceptional month for us at PYC. The Harvest Dinner Dance was a great success. Those who came were richly rewarded with excellent food, music, and libations. The auction items were appealing and diverse, producing a sizable war chest for PYC. Marguerite and her committee (see last month for the list) were able to complete their project in a style befitting our Club. In the dining and ballrooms you will see three beautiful sideboards hand carved from solid teak (not by the committee). Our hope is that these pieces will be with us for a very long time and become treasured antiques one day. WFORC was sailed in blustery, challenging conditions but all went well there too. Thanks to Betsy Moraski, our Race Committee and WFORC Regatta Chair, to Chip MacMillan, our PRO, and to our many Race Committee, Registration, and other volunteers who will be thanked by name elsewhere in this issue. All did their usual excellent job. Also in October we planted seven heritage live oak trees (thanks especially to Susan McKinnon, Lesa Stack, and the rest of the landscape committee) and added a defibrillator to the Club. We re ready now for when members, who get the shocking news about how low their bar and food bill is, go into cardiac arrest. November is a time of thanksgiving. We are thankful that hurricane season has ended and for our many blessings. One set of blessings at PYC, for which we should all be thankful, are our too often under-recognized contributors: THE WOMEN OF PYC. Please do not skip over this article and race ahead to see a pictorial of scantily clad beauties. Our beauties are not featured in that way. I am about to embark on the risk-filled and perilous undertaking of naming many of the exceptional women who contribute so much to our varied missions day-in-and-day-out, month after month, and year after year: Gwen Herrin (Hospitality and roving Ambassador of goodwill extraordinaire whom the Board has nominated for an Honorary Lifetime Voting Membership), Deon Boatman and Jennifer Langham in our office (who keep our PYC wheels of commerce and communications spinning in the right directions), Debbie Blocker (Dining Manager who never has a bad day even through her successful battle with cancer), Kelly Ring (cheerfully managing reservations, banquets, and the Ship s Store), our talented and highly professional wait-staff, bartenders, and kitchen employees, Board spouses (yes you too, Mike) who support each other, the Club, and the Board so well, Betsy Moraski (Race Committee Chair, Regatta Chair for Snipes & WFORC this year & other major regattas throughout the years), Jean Fleege (Jib Sheet Editor, Hospitality, Membership, assister with numerous projects, generator of creative ideas), Sondra Solice (Entertainment, Hospitality, special projects, & First Lady Emeritus), Susan McKinnon (race competitor, Landscape Committee Chair, & incoming Fleet Captain), Sharon Petit (Chair of Entertainment & Dining committees), Linda Whitman (Risk Management, decorations, & numerous projects), all the members of the Entertainment and Hospitality Committees, Lyn Harrison (Centerboards Chair, Entertainment), Wendi Fairchild (Centerboards, Entertainment), Lesa Stack (Centerboards, Landscape) Ann Pleune (Entertainment, Hospitality, & new Club photographer), Karen Allen (Entertainment, Hospitallity, & head of Ship s Store Committee undertaken on the heels of foot surgery yes pun intended), Julie Connerly (publicity & photos), Julie Denton (safety at sea seminar & Ship s Store Committee), Johnnie Helms (decorations, Ship s Store, Entertainment), Maryanne Hayes (Race Committee & scoring), Beverly Stagg (Race Committee and manager of Lloyd), Joyce MacMillan (Race Committee & competitor), Nancy Matthews (Race Committee), Bonnie McLeod (Race Committee), Flo Beatty (Race Committee), Quinlan Bray (Hospitality), Kaye Cole (FCYC), Peg Watson (FCYC), Diane Folse (Club entry wreath), Ann Ozwarczak (Regatta Registration, Hospitality), Libba Dennis (fresh flowers, Landscape, FCA), Millie Cascone (Regatta Registration, Hospitality), Linda Oyler (Cruising Co-Chair), Vicki Fletcher (Junior Olympic Regatta Chair, EPA Committee) Rachel Gillette (race competitor, Regatta Chair Jr. Lipton s), Donna Bingham (Regatta Registration), Cheryl Elliot (Membership), Kit Tate (Membership), all the Junior Sailing Moms Angela Addison, Kelli Amos, especially Beth Partington (who is also a membership scout), Anna Foreman (Hospitality, Entertainment, Landscape & all-around great soon-to-be First Lady), all of our Past Commodores spouses who add so much whenever they grace us with their presence, ideas, and continued commitment to the Club they love, and especially, my beautiful wife, Marguerite, whose tireless, unwavering efforts on behalf of PYC stem from her selfless desire to help, please, and serve others. On behalf of our Board and Membership, I am pleased to extend a hearty PYC Thank you to each and every one of you Ladies! I wish all of our PYC members a Happy Thanksgiving season, Tim Burr TIM BURR November 09 Page 3

4 VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS SAM FOREMAN PYC is a great club with great members. Every great organization needs new blood to continue being great. We would really enjoy meeting your friends, family, and neighbors who would like to join a great yacht club. It is my sincere hope that through our ongoing efforts the Club will be here for the ages. Anna and I share that wish for the future of our Club, so we can sit in some rocking chairs and watch kids and adults having fun on the lawn and in the water at our favorite Club. Have you seen the porch lately? It has never looked this good. When you see Greg Spitzer, take a minute to thank him for all he has done. I know he had some help from others, but Greg did much of the work and expertly corrected the problems uncovered during the reconstruction. The porch repair made our great looking club look so much better, as you gaze back at our Clubhouse from our T dock. Sadly, we have all noted the slow death of our great oaks by the deck and the boat ramp. They valiantly protected the Club during Ivan, but now are succumbing to all that salt intrusion. The PYC Landscape Committee has secured seven live oaks that will probably be planted by the time you read this article. The trees to be planted are 4 inches in diameter. I know what you are thinking. I will be long gone from this earth by the time those trees become the majestic oaks we have enjoyed in the past. Remember those rocking chairs I mentioned earlier? I can wait. No further progress to report on the clean up on our ditch. Please tell me you re surprised! However the PYC EPA/Community Relations Committee recently had a conference call with the EPA project manager in charge of this clean up. I won t speak for the rest of the committee but, I felt like Alice through the looking glass. membership report JERE ALLEN Please join me in welcoming the following NEW active members and their families to PYC: Evelyn Warren and her husband, Charles, Gene Hayes and his wife, Liz, and welcoming back former PYC members Will Johnson and his wife Diane, and Linda Thompson with her husband Keith who have rejoined the Club. Also moving up from a Young Adult membership to active status is Scott Parks and his wife, Teresa. Sharing PYC with others and attracting new members is everyone s responsibility, if we are going to insure the vitality of the Club for the future. Membership applications are available in the Club office, so go ahead and recruit that friend you have been thinking about asking to join. Remember every member who sponsors a new active member that is approved by the Board will receive a $500 PYC Credit on their account good for food, drink, or ship s store merchandise PYC BOARD NOMINATION SLATE The Nominating Committee nominates the following to serve in the positions posted: COMMODORE Sam Foreman VICE COMMODORE Alan McMillan REAR COMMODORE Jere Allen TREASURER Dan Smithson SECRETARY Bernie Knight FLEET CAPTAIN Susan McKinnon DIRECTOR (3yr) Lee Hargrove DIRECTOR (3yr) Jack Gray DIRECTOR (2yr) Linda Whitman This nomination slate will be formally presented to the membership at the General Membership Meeting on Thursday, November 12, At that time any additional nominations will be accepted from the floor. If necessary, elections will be held at the Club from 11am to 7pm on Wednesday, December 9, The Nominating Committee included: Commodore Emeritis Stephen Solice, Chairman, P/C Ron Richards, P/C John Fogg, PYC Members Gwen Herrin, and Jim Oyler. They thank everyone who interviewed and expressed a willingness to serve on the Pensacola Yacht Club Board. Page 4 November 09

Presenter Michel Atlas, Executive Chef & Chef Sommelier has worked for over 40 years in Belgium and France where he has been honored with many awards for his expertise. Mr. Atlas is the CEO of Old World Wines, Inc., a writer, and an expert wine consultant. PYC Executive Chef Daro will prepare hor d oeuvers to compliment the wines. Tickets are $25.00 per person. For reservation call Kelly Ring at Get into the Christmas spirit and join your friends at the Club to deck the halls of PYC for the holidays. This year we are meeting at the Club at 2pm on Sunday, November 29, rather than usual Monday. No experience necessary just a jolly holly attitude! Bring a dish to share at the potluck supper that will be served in the ballroom around 6 or 6:30pm after most of the work is done. CATCH UP ON MEMBER NEWS Kathleen Logan and Betsy Smith s feature article Second Blooming for Women was published in the Council on Aging s Coming of Age: Lifestyle Magazine for Seniors. It was awarded bronze in the National Mature Media Awards competition in Their book on the topic, Second Blooming for Women: Growing a Life that Matters after Fifty, will be published in November Twelve Junior Girl Scouts had a wonderful time working on their Sailing Fun Badge aboard Jim & Linda Oyler s Parlay. The girls learned the basic knot tying, seamanship, and safety. All of the girls had a turn at the wheel driving the boat! Susan McKinnon organized the outing, and joining in the fun were Ian McKinnon and Girl Scout Mom, Lesa Stack. Pictured to the right is Susan and the Girl Scouts. McKenna Reagan Harrell made her appearance on Friday, October 16. She weighed 7lbs even and was 20 inches long. Mother, Julie Harrell is doing fine under the watchful eye of her mother, Linda Oyler, while Father, Scott Harrell and Granddad, Jim Oyler were high fiving and taking full credit for the birth. Big Sister, Madlyn is not sure what all the fuss is about, but has enjoyed all the special attention and the Mickey Mouse Show her grandparents took her to see. Pictured to the right is Mcpumpkin Harrell. Ahhhhh!!! Congratulations to New PYC members, Nathan & Mary Ann Ford who are expecting their first baby. Ron & Joanne Bruce aboard Miss Jody reported in that they are under way from Kalimantan (Borneo) to Singapore. Sailing on a close reach making good time for about 7 hours, Joanne furled the screecher and later set the jib by herself and said, We don t need to stop! Let s go to Singapore. They are now in the South China Sea a long way from Pensacola Bay. More is more to the story on the PYC website click on Ship s Log. We were saddened to hear of the unexpected death of PYC member, Al Graff. Al was a veteran of WW II, an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and loving father of Michael Graff, Susie Graff (PYC Member & former Fleet Captain), John Endacott, and Brooks Endacott and grandfather to nine grandchildren. He will be missed by his family and many, many friends. November 09 Page 5

6 Our Club Championship series, Race #3 to the Sea Buoy was completed on Saturday, September 26. With your Fleet Captain handling the PRO duties, the biggest concern was no wind. After making pre race course adjustments to allow a shorting course possibility, Mother Nature built nice winds allowing a good race for the complete course. Spinnaker A was won by Tryponite, followed by John and Jason Knoll s, Black Ice and Paul and Rachael Gillette s, Atlantic Union. Spinnaker B was won by Neil McMillan and Carlos Melville on Radio Flyer with Mike Beard on Kanaloa in 2nd and the Antares crew in 3rd. Non Spinnaker was won by Ron Bray s, Roka Dobi with Jes-Be-N-Me in 2nd place. Radio Flyer s overall spinnaker win and Roka Dobi s non spinnaker win pushes both of them into huge leads for the overall club Championship series win. The final race in the Championship Series, PYC #4, is scheduled for November 21. Page 6 November 09 fleet captain s report WFORC RESULTS I hope that all those who just completed the WFORC have recovered from their bruises. What a three day regatta! I don t know of any WFORC series that matches this year s windy conditions. As RC Chair, Betsy Moraski said, We had it all! De-mastings, broken booms, separated decks, broaching boats all over the race course, sails shredded and many crew in the water. Of the 29 boats starting race #1 on Friday, only 14 made the starting line for race #6 on Sunday afternoon. Cold north winds, never under 20 knots with gusts to 30 knots for three straight days, the sailors, boats and the race committee were all tested more than ever before. For the terrific race committee and the surviving sailors, there will be tales to be told for many years. Tom Beery s, J-35 Man O War won Class A by 6 points and the coveted Riddle Cup. The Class B Flying Tigers opted to race Friday, skip Saturday and only one Tiger raced on Sunday. Al Wyczek s Toy Tiger, out of Louisville, KY, raced on Sunday and won the Class. Your Fleet Captain, and the writer of this tale, in his newly rebuilt and just launched Evelyn 32-2 Finesse won Class C. Tied with Super Duck on Friday, down by two points after Saturday s racing, we won Sunday s first race with the Duck in third. Tied going into the Regatta s last race, we eked out a 20 second victory for a one point class win. Consistent winner Antares won Class D by 6 Points. Of the five counting races (one throw out allowed), the Hoffman, Guild, Wilde team skippered by Dick Piatt loved the heavy weather and posted 4 straight 1 st and a 2nd to finish well ahead of Jake Speed and Reach Around. For those not there, just hang around the PYC bar and you will hear all the individual tales. Every boat has some. This time they don t even have to grow over the years to be really good! PYC s Chip MacMillan did his usual fantastic job of providing fair racing every day in extreme conditions. Being on Maxine or any of the smaller pin set, mark set or safety boats for three days in these conditions was just brutal. Thanks to all! RC & WFORC CHAIR, BETSY MORASKI ADDS HER THANKS I would like to thank all of the people who worked so hard to make the WFORC Regatta such a success. The Yacht Club Staff, Registration Volunteers, Race Committee and safety boats all gave 110% and it showed!! Thanks to all. 7 junior sailing report The Lee Stitt Memorial Regatta and John Chappell Regatta is a one design sailboat race for the Junior Sailiors of the PYC. It was raced on October 10 with a great turnout. The winds were light and shifting, but the sailors raced Optimist and Laser Radials. Special thanks to Past Commodore John Matthews, (PRO) Principal Race Officer and his race committee for running the regatta and Jonathan Fleege for coaching the Green Fleet beginner Opti sailors around the Stitt racecourse. After an afternoon of racing the Juniors gathered on the lawn to eat pizza and popcorn while telling stories of their day on the water racing and watched Morning Light, a Disney film. STEPHEN WAGNER PYC Stitt - Chappell Jr. Regatta 2009 PYC SAILING AWARDS The PYC Sailing Awards will be presented on December 6 at PYC. It will begin at 6pm with a heavy hors d oeuvre reception followed by trophy and award presentations. There will also be a silent auction for the Junior Sailing Sponsor parking place at this event. The Juniors are asked to nominate and vote for the Junior Sailors perpetual awards that will be awarded that evening WADEWITZ REGATTA RESULTS PYC Laser Radial sailors enjoyed a regatta close to home by visiting Fairhope Yacht Club for the 2009 Wadewitz Regatta on Sep Three races were completed on Saturday with a strong showing from our sailors. However, due to lack of wind on Sunday, no additional races were completed. Dodge Rees finished first with all bullets, followed by Brandon Addison with second place, AJ Pereira in third place, and Eric Amos in fourth place. Three PYC Opti Sailors also competed in the Wadewitz Regatta. Craig Cantley and Michael Rice sailed in the Blue Fleet (ages 11 & 12), and Gorham Partington sailed in the White Fleet (10 & under). Gorham placed first overall in the White Fleet. Overall, Gorham and Michael had exactly the same number of points, and so were tied for 6 th /7 th place out of a total of 21 Optis in the Championship Fleet. Michael placed 4 th overall in the very competitive blue Fleet. PYC Laser Team Discussing Strategy with the Coach JUNIOR SAILING CLINICS Club Racing will end on Wednesday nights because of Daylight savings time on November 1, but sailing clinics will be offered for advanced sailors on Sundays 1 to 4 PM. 10 CRUISER S CORNER JIM & LINDA OYLER Five boats ignored the weatherman s dire predictions and met in Robert s Bayou for the September raft-up. On Saturday we enjoyed a down-wind sail to the bayou in a knot southeasterly breeze. To everyone s delight a porpoise family joined us in the anchorage putting on quite a show chasing mullet for most of the afternoon. The baby porpoise in the group was quite curious and came so close to our boats that his mother had to come get him over and over again. The weather during the weekend was unbelievably beautiful and everyone had a grand time. A big thank you goes to Rear Commodore Scott Harrell and family for driving over with bar-b-cue pork and chicken for all to enjoy. Dinner in the park was out of the question so sixteen hardy boaters enjoyed dinner aboard the rafted boats. Some amazing side dishes were brought to accompany the bar-b-cue. Sunday morning found everyone aboard Parlay for our usual brunch with bloody Mary s and mimosas. The trip back was uneventful and the left-over bar-b-cue was a big hit with the Sunday afternoon gang at the bar. Fall is finally here and winter is around the corner. Your Landscape Committee is busy working on our newest projects. These include applying winter rye to keep our lawn beautiful during our coldest months, and continuing preventative maintenance in the areas that need it most. Many of you have noticed that the oak trees on the south side of the clubhouse look very weak. They took a beating from Hurricane Ivan, and have had a difficult time regenerating new growth. Looking toward the future, and creating a place for generations to enjoy, we will be planting additional live oaks. To enhance the front gate we are planning to plant creeping fig at the base of the columns. It is our hope that as it grows the columns will be covered. The column caps and walls have been repainted, and by the time you read this, the other entire column will be painted, as well. The gates will continue to be rustic and once the fig covers the columns, we should have a very striking entrance. If you are interested in the landscape of PYC, please join Marguerite Burr, Vice Commodore Sam Forman and his wife, Anna Foreman, Lesa Stack, Libba Dennis, Dave Hoffman, Dana Jackson, Dave Keleher, Diane Livingston, Randy Hobgood, and of course me, Susan McKinnon. Green thumbs not required!! Page 10 November 09 BLUE ANGEL SHOW RAFT UP NOVEMBER 14 The next raft-up is at Fort McRae for the Blue Angel show, November 14. This is always great fun. We re planning a weenie roast on the beach after the day- trippers go home Saturday afternoon. See you there! DONATE A NAUTICAL XMAS ORNAMENT Don t forget to bring your Nautical Christmas ornament for the Sailing Center Christmas tree. We d love to have them personalized with your name or your boat s name and the year. Bring it on any Friday night and get 7 split tickets for $5.00. Such a deal! LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE SUSAN MCKINNON

11 MANAGER S NOTES STEPHEN SUCHY In order for PYC to provide exceptional service, as well as, an economically sound operation, we ask our members to make reservations in advance for all dining and special events. For reservation call Kelly Ring at (850) It has always been our Club s policy not to turn away members. However, members who have not made a reservation prior to the noon deadline will be asked to wait in the bar or lobby area until a server becomes available. The dining room is staffed based on the number of reservations we have received for the evening. There may be empty tables in the dining room, but members without reservations will not be seated until a server is available to accommodate them. We do this to maintain the high standard of service you expect and deserve as a member of the Pensacola Yacht Club. If a member makes a reservation for a special event, and the member neither attends nor cancels his reservation at least 24 hours before the event occurs, the member will be charged half the price of the event. This rule applies to any special event, whether or not the event is sold out. See you around the Club! 12 SHIP S LOG After WWII power boats in the 50 to 75 ft range were the center of the PYC social scene. Others like Col McHenry Jones Sea Lark and Commodore John Pace s Chanticleer were over 100 ft and were truly floating palaces. Owners of boats this size often employed Captains to keep their yachts in Bristol condition, operate them while the owners entertained aboard and then move them to the Keys, Ft Lauderdale or the islands during the winter. Our own Bill Meilner was one of the most sought after professional Captains and his logs count over 100 Gulf crossings and 50 deliveries to the Bahamas. He would then stay with the boat over the winter to be there when the owner and guests came down for vacations. Bill was also involved in several sales transactions as boats changed hands and it is one of these experiences that I share with you this month. While at Ft Lauderdale s famous Pier 66 one winter in the early 1960s Bill helped negotiate the purchase of a 53 ft boat at a cost of $70,000. The buyer showed up at the boat to close the deal and the seller asked how he was going to pay for it. The buyer said he had cash! (We are talking 70 grand in cash in the1960s.) So Bill, the owner and the buyer went below and locked the companionway doors to count the money. But the owner had rolled all those various bills so tightly that they could not be spread out on a table and counted. Eventually the owner just gave up, stuffed the bills back into the box and told the others that his accountant would check it later. So the buyer took possession of the boat and gave Bill a brand new $500 bill to bring the boat to Pensacola. But that s not the end of this particular tale. A few years later the same boat was sold to a new owner, but there was no paperwork from the first transaction! $70,000 cash and a 53 ft boat had changed hands without a title or even a bill of sale being executed. So Bill spent a long time researching the boat s history and bearing witness to the fact this guy actually owned the boat before it could be sold! I wonder if Bill got another $500 for all that effort. For more wonderful insight into this period of big power cruisers, I urge you to look carefully at the photos in the hallway upstairs and read Bill Meilner s interview in the PYC oral history book.
