COMMODORE S COMMENTS ALAN McMILLAN Writing each Jib Sheet article requires me to think about the future. Most often, everyday operational issues dictate a short-range focus on problems of the day, week or month. Sometimes my thoughts are long range, not the next few months ahead, but the next three, five or ten years. When you are a steward for a 100 (plus)- year-old club, history mandates each of us to consider the challenges the future will present. This needs to be much more than a blue sky exercise. Defining our vision, setting goals, developing strategies, understanding the shorterrange tactics, and financial considerations all impose commitment, good judgment and discipline. Our club is engaging in that process. We have a Long-Range Planning Committee staffed by excellent members. Each of them has a unique background, be it in real estate, property development, engineering, legal, government or community experience. The chairman of our Long Range Planning Committee is Past Commodore Tim Burr. Tim and the entire committee are focusing on developing a realistic set of options for our future. They are exploring the needs our club will have to meet in order to provide member value and grow and prosper over the many years ahead. They are looking at land use in a future when the 67-year-old ditch across our property is no longer a factor. What will be the best use of our upland space? What should be our plan for the marina? Can we develop a plan and supporting business model that allows members to form a waiting list of potential users in a secure, modern marina with competitive features at fair pricing? These are a couple of the big ones that the committee is evaluating. As their work product progresses, they will bring ideas and information to the general membership, sometimes in a conceptual form and sometimes with specifics. I am thankful for their effort and commitment on behalf of all of us. Seek out these committee members, and give them your ideas and thank them for their service. I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving: To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it - but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor. - Oliver Wendell Holmes P/C Jim Lee It s more relaxing to be a Past Commodore 2015 Hobie 16 North American Championship Regatta Last Day - September 25th PAGE 3 JIB SHEET

VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS Jim Reeves We are excited that we have had five new members join the Pensacola Yacht Club, who were approved at this month s Board Meeting on September 16 th. Those approved included our first Corporate Members from Compass Bank. Please welcome are new Corporate Members John Gormley (Compass Bank), and Stephen Welling (Compass Bank) and our other three new members Sanford Hardy, Paul Johnston, and Dr. Richard Samuels! Since that meeting, we have had our second Corporate Member apply from Summit Bank, as well a returning member, John Baars Connell, and two applicants. We are well on our way to meeting our goal of 60 new or renewing members for calendar year Exciting new things are happening at the Pensacola Yacht Club that affect the value of the dues that you pay here. Aside from the National Championships (USODA), we were happy to have the North American Hobie Cat Championships last week with boats (and motor homes) from Seattle, California, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, New York, and Pensacola Beach. They were all very happy with our Club and especially happy with the job the staff did in dealing with the many needs and requests of the Hobie Catters. Back to membership, we are considering a By- Law change to allow any widow or widower who is 80-years-old, and who has been a regular member for over 20 years, to pay 50% of the regular dues as a tribute to their age and to their loyalty to the PYC your thoughts, please. We would appreciate your suggesting to the Membership Committee, or to the staff, additional new members, to include corporate, regular, or social members who might like to join our Club. Please speak to your family, friends, and business associates about the benefit of belonging to the South s Finest Yacht Club! TRIVIA QUESTION: See page 14 for answer Few people with ANCRAOPHOBIA become sailors. Why? a. They fear becoming lost at sea, in other words, not being able to find a safe anchorage. b. They despise having to deal with anchors. c. They fear the wind. P/C Ron Bray and Kay Rankin conching in the sunset at Fort McRee PAGE 4 JIB SHEET

FROM REAR COMMODORE Check out the improvements to our members Ladies Restroom! Our Hospitality Committee, led by Jean Fleege and Gwen Herrin, has started their project to redecorate the ladies restroom off the member entrance. Many of you may remember when this area was painted a Pepto Bismol pink and there was no seating. The first improvements were made in about 2007 or All of the work was done by volunteers. P/C Flack Logan, Johnnie and Ed Helms and yours truly helped with the painting. Our own Betsy Moraski made the draperies and cushions for the wicker settee (which was found languishing on the upstairs porch and brought to life with new paint), as well as the wicker chair (donated by Flack & Kathleen Logan). P/C John Matthews lent his carpentry skills to install the tissue-disposal opening in the sink counter so that the trashcan could be hidden. The old second counter was removed to make way for seating - and artwork was purchased. Later, Karen Allen contributed her decorating skills by updating the paint color, putting in a rug and adding a full-length mirror. Other past projects include such major accomplishments as the addition of a bathroom upstairs and equipment for our kitchen! Now, to the present! Take a look at the beautiful plantation shutters that have been installed to give the space a more modern and cleaner look. Wing chairs, donated by Jean Fleege, have been reupholstered in a lovely new fabric call Regatta. Gloria and Commodore Alan Spotlight on a World Champion: George Gamble (Article & Photo by Julie Connerley) PYC s George Gamble has had an extraordinary year campaigning his J-111, My Sharona. He started in January, winning his class on the final day at Key West Race Week. That was followed by Charleston Race Week in April, then up the east coast to the NOODs in Annapolis, New York Yacht Club s annual J-111 Pre- World s and concluding with the 2015 J-111 Worlds in Newport, Rhode Island during June. Befitting his world-class accomplishment, a large photo of My Sharona is now hanging in the Grille Room anteroom, adjacent and to the left of the fireplace. Having just won the distance race at Newport, the picture depicts My Sharona as she returns to the harbor and approaches the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge. Pondering how to recognize a world champion, Commodore Alan McMillan decided the best way was to find someone who is a world champion to help with the honors. Fortunately, PYC has among its membership, another world champion--dr. James Linda Brent McMillan contributed the perfect side table to go between the two chairs, and Molly Briggs has her artwork on display. What a delightful start to the updating of this area! As money is available, additional updates will be installed. This project, like many others at PYC, was made possible through volunteer efforts. Opportunities for volunteering around our Club are many. What a great way to be involved and get to know more of your fellow club members. Hats off to the Hospitality Committee for another job well done. This hard working group is responsible for the split ticket on Friday nights. Your participation with a split ticket purchase helps to fund these efforts. Be sure to let them know how much we appreciate their efforts. New wing chairs in the Member s Ladies Room. R. Andrews, whose sloop Abracadabra III, won the 1990 International 50-ft. Yacht Association World Cup.! A large photo of Dr. Andrews winning vessel, Abracadabra III can also be seen in the lobby of PYC. George Gamble has placed PYC, and indeed Pensacola, on the map. As George said after the presentation of the framed photo, There were boats from all over competing -- the BVI, England, and Australia. But half of our crew came from Pensacola and we showed them that PYC was their equal, if not better. Champions Sharing Smiles George Gamble and Dr. James R. Anderson PAGE 5 JIB SHEET

Dave and crew member Cali FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT Hook In & Hold On Any sailors out there playing a little Havana Daydreamin in their heads? PYC team goes to Lipton s! Thanks to the competitive and adventurous spirit in Ian McKinnon, Tim Dunton, Eric Amos, Mike Beard, Brandon Addison, David Chandler, Claire Rees and John Buziak, Pensacola Yacht Club was represented in the 2015 Sir Thomas Lipton Championship Regatta. Our PYC team competed with 14 other Gulf Yachting Association (GYA) yacht club teams in club-owned Flying Scots. The Flying Scot has been the GYA inter-club competition boat since Before that, the GYA clubs competed with one another in Fish Boats. If you were at the GYA business meetings that were held the same weekend as the Lipton Regatta, then you know that our yacht club, through Commodore Alan McMillan, voted to replace the Flying Scot as the GYA inter-club boat with a newer design. It was a very close vote with each GYA yacht club getting to cast one vote. And the winner is the Viper 640, which beat out the VX 1 by one vote, The GYA inter-club regattas will be sailed in the Viper 640 beginning in It s sort of a bittersweet change. The Flying Scot served us well and, just like the Fish Boat that is still sailed competitively by some of our members today, PYC will continue to incorporate the Flying Scot into our Club s sailing events and training classes. I wonder though, if once you set sail in a Viper, you ll ever go back to the Flying Scot! The Viper has a whole lotta getup n go in it! Have you noticed all the CATS ON THE PROWL AT PYC? I counted 73 of them myself HOBIE CATS, that is! Did you know PYC hosted the 2015 Hobie 16 North American Championships Regatta in September? It was a weeklong regatta with racing every day, beginning with practice racing on Sunday the 20 th and finishing up on Friday the 25 th. The cool cats sailing in the regatta were all totally impressed by and thrilled with PYC, from the Club itself, to the nice RV camping area on the north lawn, to the pool, of course, to the banquet facilities and to all of our employees and management. The PAGE 6 JIB SHEET Dave Oerting Hobie sailors appreciated the PYC staff so much that they gave all of our employees a standing ovation at the Friday night trophy presentations! They also gave a lot of praise to Sean Hickey, to PYC s Race Committee Chairman, and to the entire PYC Volunteer Race Committee crew. I sure hope you were able to catch up to some of these sailing cats during this exciting week of championship racing at PYC. The West Florida Ocean Racing Circuit (WFORC) is set to stop off at PYC in October. The regatta is coming to PYC for a 3-day-weekend from Oct 16 th 18 th. This Gulf Yachting Association sanctioned event will bring competitors to PYC from all across the GYA. Please mark your calendar and drop by the yacht club during this regatta weekend to take part in one of our most celebrated regattas of the year. October 31 st November 8: PENSACOLA a la HABANA REGATTA (See Page 11) Coming to PYC in November: November 7-8: The Jubilee Regatta returns to PYC. One of our favorite fall regattas features the smaller one-design sailboats for some close competition. Come out to see all the different types of boats in this regatta, including the Viper 640s that were just voted in as the future GYA interclub competition boat. You may just catch the Blue Angels show from the yacht club deck while you re checking out the regatta. Speaking of the Blue Angels, the weekend of Nov 7-8, also marks the Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show over NAS and with it the annual PYC Fort McRae Cruisers Raft-Up. Get on a boat and get to the party! November 14: PYC Club Championship #5. This is the final regatta in the championship series. Which boat and crew will be crowned the 2015 PYC Sailing Champions? HIHO into the wild blue yonder we go! DO 2015 RAFT-UP CALENDAR November 7th - Jere & Karen Allen - Ft. McRee December 19th - Linda & Jim Oyler - Sailing Center - Progressive Boat Party.

CRUISER S CORNER Rusty and Trish Bond hosted the September raftup at Redfish Point on September 5th and 6th. Trish, although she had done a lot of preliminary work, was unable to attend. Nevertheless, Rusty did a yeoman s job of hosting it all by himself. Sixteen boats came out for this Labor Day Weekend event. Some of the boaters chose to anchor in Fort McRee (in spite of the madness in there!) and dinghy out to the events on the beach. On Saturday afternoon, a semi-wicked storm blew through, and it was testimony to all of our anchoring skills that only one boat dragged. We won t mention who, but when most of us pulled up our anchors on Sunday, it took an extreme amount of time to get the mud off the chain. So, it is truly amazing that we all held in the 25kn blow. Again, around midnight another storm came through, but with Chuck & Peg Minnich less wind. After the Saturday storm, about 35 people (including a baby) gathered on the beach to enjoy the delicious pulled pork supplied by PYC and the sides they everyone provided. We were apparently having a lot of fun because a couple came to the beach and wanted to know who we were and how they could join such a fun, loving group. We invited them to share some food, but they had already eaten. Sunday was beautiful! After the usual wonderful brunch on the beach, most of the boaters traded the rocking and rolling from the passing boat wakes for the crowd in the Fort McRee anchorage. In actuality, many of the smaller boats had left and there was plenty of room to anchor. On Sunday night, the Knotty Voyagers invited everyone to a cocktail party in the cove at the SE corner of the anchorage. It culminated in P/C Ron Bray and Kay Rankin conching the sunset. (see page 4) Someone should have shouted Cheese! Where s the baby? At far right, dressed in white, note Julie Denton s right arm. The two protrusions are Baby Cole Roberts feet! 8 JUNIOR SAILING For the last couple of days I have been pinging the good folks over at Fairhope Yacht Club for the Wadewicz Regatta results. I have gotten the Cape de Ville results and the PHRF, but no Juniors. The philosophy appears to be that the folks at the awards ceremony are the only ones who need to know. In the midst of this frustrating exchange, a Facebook notification popped up on my screen. It was a very gracious post by Ray Grove, thanking the host of parents who helped unload and set up eight Opti s and a 420 over at Fairhope for the Wadewicz Regatta. The post was quickly followed by a series of parents thanking Ray and our coaching staff (Tom Whitehurst, Brandon Addison and Eric Amos) for their contribution to the great experience they had. The most heartening comment may have been It was fun! Let s do it again! Maybe that was the most important result. When the Wadewicz Regatta rolled around, you could find Bert Rice and Eric Amos organizing the caravan of Opti s and a 420 with a group of eager Juniors on Friday afternoon. James Simkins was there with Ray trying to find a place to insert themselves in the flurry of activity. On Saturday, you could find our Juniors scattered over nearly every course with Jake Cozart and his dad, Steve, on the Cape de Ville course in a Flying Scot (Steve s 1 st ever race!), and Cole Kariher and his crew Lucas Perkins sailing his first race in the 420 class. At the Competitor s Meeting, the Green Fleet PRO was polite, but emphatic, that they would not be recording finishes on his course. This sent Gil Hackel (one of our promising Opti sailors) from Green Fleet to White Fleet, where he more than held his own. As I said, we took eight boats over! Unfortunately, I cannot name all the kids from memory. We had multiple Karihers, one Salvagio, and the ever present Matt Grove. Scotty may have been there also. Over the years this scene has been acted out many times. Each year a few new names are added to the list cast of actors and a few move on to other things. The thing I marvel at is how these enthusiastic parents and kids organize themselves and pull together to get this show on the road and still have enough fun to want to do it all again. Alexis detoqueville would smile! Earlier in the month the Juniors shrugged off the shock of starting school and picked up the pace just PAGE 8 JIB SHEET John Buziak about where they left off in August. The Stitt Family stepped up, as they always do, to make the annual Stitt-Chappelle Regatta a special event for the kids. Tracey Stitt put together the gift bags for the kids and, in cooperation with Mr. Carter Brown from Zaxby s, provided the kids with regatta shirts! 9 ENTERTAINMENT Of course September turned out be such a splash. Our impromptu celebration for Labor Day had scads of members and Nicole Ferry guests alike turn out to take advantage of the gorgeous weather by the pool and the indoor buffet. David & Barbara Norfleet and Marco Stolfi By the way, September was my birthday month. This was the month when my husband won the auction for the mink coat (!) at the Ladies Dinner Dance last year. This year s dance had great music by the Adam Holt band, fabulous food from Chef Artie (again!) and a live auction emceed by our own Commodore McMillan. Next on our entertainment schedule is the October 23 rd, Mystery Dinner Theater! There is no conflict with football Saturday, hence your date will have no excuse not to attend and enjoy. Make your reservations soon, as the number of attendees will be limited. Don t forget - the Modern Eldoradoes are playing Friday, November 13, for PYC s Honky Tonk on the Bayou! Don t miss it! Start getting your cowboy attire ready! Presenting... The Ferrys! P/C Roger Moraski & Ian McKinnon Left: Cutting the rug! 10 PLANNING AHEAD FOR THE HOLIDAYS! Fall is in the air, and pumpkin recipes are everywhere. That means it s already that time to start thinking about all the Christmas boating activities! The Progressive Marina Party is scheduled for Saturday, December 12. Host boats will be serving appetizers and will be open for visits starting at 5:00 P.M. Each boat will be assigned a 30-minute visit period, so you do not have to stay on your own boat throughout the party. If your boat is not in the PYC marina, you can still participate. Bring your own boat to the T-dock or check with the dock master for an open slip. After progressing from boat-to-boat, we will progress to the Sailing Center for more dining and dancing. Attendees who do not have a host boat are asked to bring a dish to share in the Sailing Center. Sunday morning we Linda Oyler Claus will have our usual raft-up bloodies and mimosas in the Sailing Center. Everyone should bring a brunch dish to share. Remember - boat shoes (white soles) only, if you plan to board the boats. The following Saturday, December 19, is the Lighted Boat Parade. Decorate your boat and follow Maxine around the bay, beginning at 4:30 P.M. We will return to the Sailing Center for hors d oeurves and awards. This parade is open to all area boaters. Encourage your friends from other clubs, or those with no club affi liation, to join the parade in their boats. The more boats, the brighter the parade! A bar and bartender will be available in the Sailing Center for both functions. See you there! Pensacola Bay Racing Participation Meeting November 19, 2015 Pensacola Yacht Club Commodore Alan McMillan (PYC), Commodore John Matthews (NYCP) and Commodore Mike Pedersen (PBYC) will host a meeting for interested competitive sailors to discuss ways to improve participation in Bay racing events hosted by the Bay yacht clubs. The traditional level of participation over the past few years has been declining and all of us need to understand the cause of the decline and how we as hosting clubs can increase participation in all racing events especially PHRF races. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 19, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 at Pensacola Yacht Club in the Watson Sailing Center. There will be refreshments served including hors d oeuvres, beer and wine at no cost to those attending. Please put the date on your calendar, iphone, ipad or Laptop and plan to attend. In addition, please give thought to how we can best improve participation and racing activities on Pensacola Bay. If you plan to attend this meeting please advise Scott Segers that you will attend. Please send your response to: events@pyc.gccoxmail.com Look forward to seeing you!!!! PAGE 10 JIB SHEET

Havana Daydreamin about the Pensacola a la Habana! Regatta Departing from PYC on October 31st! Your Pensacola Yacht Club, through the hard work of Bob Kriegel and the help of many of our other members, will be the FIRST YACHT CLUB IN AMERICA to bring an official, US Governmentauthorized sailing competition into Cuba since Designated as an athletic competition to take place in Havana at the Hemingway International Yacht Club, this regatta will go into the history books as the new beginning of friendly relations and sailing competitions between the citizens of the USA and Cuba. Come see them off as our Pensacola Yacht Club racers will make history once again as we coordinate the inaugural Pensacola a la Habana Regatta 2015, beginning October 31. This offshore rally and race will once again pit sailors against the seas. (At left) Letter written to Mr. Bob Kriegel by the commodore of the Hemingway International Yacht Club, dated June 30, 2015 (Exerpt: paragraph 4) As Commodore of the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba and host of the crew participating in the Pensacola-Havana Regatta, I am pleased to say that this regatta will contribute to expand and strengthen the excellent friendship and cooperation relations of your Yacht Club with the US boating Community, which were born on the same day of the founding of this Cuban nautical institution with the membership of a U.S. citizen among the 32 founding members of our Yacht Club. Mr. Jose Miguel Diaz Esrich, Commodore Please note: Thanks to the combined contributions of John Oerting and Julie Connerley for everything on this page! History isn t always about places, happenings and people we never knew from centuries ago. Sometimes it s about events and yacht club members who are sitting at the next table in the Grill Room who have been there, done that. At the September 15 seminar was presented by Tom Pace, Jr., one of PYC s long-standing families, brothers Tom and A.D. Dick Pace, their parents, and Tom Jr. s Great Uncle John Pace, who was commodore in The Pace family has shaped much of PYC s history, including their involvement with the inaugural St. Petersburg to Havana Yacht Race in 1930! The Pace brothers raced their last race in 1948, and although no other PYC members took up the challenge, the regatta continued until Fidel Castro overthrew the government in The White Heather, the Pace s 51 custom sloop. It was delivered to Pensacola from Detroit to Chicago, down the Mississippi and into the Gulf towards Pensacola. PAGE 11 JIB SHEET
