3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS ALAN McMILLAN The weather is starting to get a little cooler as our season changes from summer to fall. Our first social event of autumn, the Ladies Dinner Dance, was held on October 1st. A Night at Moulin Rouge was the theme, and PINK was the color of the night as proceeds from the live auction went to The Pensacola Breast Cancer Association. Next up will be the premier racing event of the fall, the Gulf Yachting Association s (GYA) West Florida Ocean Circuit (WFORC) three-day regatta on October 14th, 15th and 16th. Two local area developers have submitted proposals to partner with PYC to build residential homesteads on 5 acres in the northeast sector of our 21-acre property. The Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) has conducted two Town Hall meetings to present these proposals to members. This important discussion will continue with a presentation at a specially called General Membership Meeting on November 9th at 6 PM when the LRPC will present their recommendation for member approval to enter negotiations with the highest-ranking developer. If we reach that stage, the next step in the process will be a later presentation to the General Membership for a final decision to partner and build residences on this portion of our property! What is vital in this process is that all members engage. And to date, you have engaged. Approximately 30 members attended the first Town Hall and over 40 attended the second. Long-term and newer members offered their thoughts and visions for our future. Every member s input is valued and will be used by the LRPC and the Board to bring recommendations to the full membership. Our Club continues to build membership at a two-year record pace and our financials are excellent. The marina construction has slowed, as the west marina is substantially complete and we await permitting for the east stage of this project. Our next goal for this project is to complete the installation of the new launch ramp in late October. We are thankful that Mother Nature has spared us any severe storms to date. As always, use your club! Enjoy a lunch or dinner in the Grill Room or outside on the deck where you can take in the best view of Pensacola Bay. The finest staff ever will anticipate and fulfill your expectations for service. And since we always strive to improve, give suggestions to any board member, General Manager Jim Warwick, or me. The future starts today, not tomorrow. Pope John Paul II Pretty in Pink at the Ladies Dinner Dance SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Annual Elections Meeting!! The November 2016 Annual Elections Meeting of the General Membership will be held on Wednesday, November 9th, at 6 PM. This meeting will also include a voting proposal to authorize the Long Range Planning Committee to enter into negotiations with one of the developers to determine the final terms of a proposed sale and development of approximately 5 acres in the NE section of our 21-acre property. These terms will include price, boundaries, and layout. If negotiations are successful, then those results, and the final terms and complete details of the project, such as proposed restrictive covenants, homeowners association by-laws, and the like, would be brought to the General Membership in an announced meeting in early 2017 for a vote to sell & develop the described property OR not to sell & develop the described property. 4 VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS JIM REEVES Well, September was a good month for membership by historical standards, but a slow month by recent standards. The Board approved four new members; Owen and Kathryn Drey; James and Agnes Masters; Alexis and Brad Andrews; and well known car folks Pete and Angela Moore. Please welcome them all to membership in the Pensacola Yacht Club! Regrettably, we also had two resignations at our September Board Meeting. New members between January 1, 2014 and September 2016, equal 112. With deaths and resignations during that entire period, we now have a net increase of 58 additional members to our membership numbers! As always, we appreciate the efforts of the staff, Dean Kirschner, the Membership Committee and the Board to attract and retain new members. Speaking of retention and member value, the Commodore and the Board continue to put together our 1st annual Nautically Themed Art Show in November tentative dates are November 17th, 18th, & 19th. A Save-the-Date concerning the show should be in your hands already! Whether you are showing your own art or viewing the art of others, come to the show! Bring your friends and potential new members to the Cub and celebrate the event! As always, we ask our members to report to the Memberhsip Committee, or to the staff, any person who might like to join our Club. Please speak to your family, friends, and business associates about the benefits of joining the South s Finest Yacht Club In 2009 the Florida Legislature enacted a temporary pilot program to explore potential options for regulating the anchoring or mooring of non-live-aboard vessels outside the marked boundaries of public mooring fields. The City of St. Augustine, the City of St. Petersburg, the City of Sarasota, the City of Stuart in conjunction with Martin County, and the cities of Key West and Marathon in conjunction with Monroe County were granted temporary authority to regulate anchoring and mooring in their jurisdictional waters through local ordinance. The pilot program was extended by the Florida Legislature until July 1, Interested persons are invited to provide valuable input on this initiative. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is seeking help from cruising boaters, local boaters, and residents in evaluating the pilot program, and a variety of concepts related to specific restrictions on anchoring of vessels which may be considered in the future. FWC has created and posted a survey link on our Boating and Waterways webpage at The survey should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete and will be available from October 1-9, Your participation will be greatly appreciated. 5 FROM OUR REAR COMMODORE Linda Brent Improvements have been noticed. One of our new members commented to me recently that, with all of the improvements to Pensacola Yacht Club, particularly the newly paved parking lot, improvement to the entrance and the ongoing upgrade of our marina, PYC looks like a real yacht club now. I know all our members, especially those who have been around awhile, are proud to see our beautiful Club brought up to date. But we re not done yet The marina is looking better every day and it is expected that the new ramp will be installed in time for the WFORC Regatta in mid October. If you have ever gotten stuck while launching or pulling your boat out of the water, you ll be relieved that Greg, our dock master, will no longer have to use his car jack to get you over the hump. Pool upgrade coming this fall Cooler months are ahead and our pool will be getting a major upgrade. It is also hoped that funds will be available to continue to add more shade to the pool area. If you are a regular pool user, perhaps you may have some suggestions for making our pool area more enjoyable. them to me at lindaw@cox.net. Town Hall Meetings. Many of you have attended one of the recent meetings chaired by PC Tim Burr. One of the meetings I attended was held in the Sailing Center. The new carpet and paint, along with the new chairs, have made this part of our facility most desirable for a meeting or party. I, again, urge you take advantage of this area of our Club, if not for a meeting or a party, just to sit in a rocking chair and take in the view. Save the date NOVEMBER 28! The Holiday Season is fast approaching and our annual Christmas Decorating Event will occur on November 28th (the Monday after Thanksgiving). If you have never participated in this event, please think about doing so this year. Club members meet and decorate the Club and then have a potluck supper. You will be amazed at what a determined and hardworking Crewe of Members can do in such a short time! Backed by our fabulous staff, in one short day, we t-r-a-n-s-f-o-r-m our Club with lights, garlands and tinsel. We are ready to enjoy all our holiday festivities at PYC!!!!! We hope you will decide to be a part of this sentimental and joyful tradition! PAGE 5 JIB SHEET

6 FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT Dave Oerting Dave and crew member Cali W F O R C Do you know what that acronym is for? It s the West Florida Ocean Racing Circuit, and it s coming October 14th 16th. It s one of the biggest regattas of the year at PYC. Three days of yacht racing and three nights of fun! Come out and join the festivities! Senior Lipton Regatta The Senior Lipton Regatta was hosted by Buccaneer Yacht Club over the Labor Day Weekend. Hurricane Hermine blew by, the skies cleared, and your PYC Lipton Team sailed over to Mobile Bay for this storied regatta. Thank you to our team of Brandon Addison, Jules Heitman, Andrew McMillan, Stuart McMillan, Derek Riddle, Hunter Riddle, and Sarah Fe White. They sailed very well but finished out of the silver as Pass Christian Yacht Club captured the 2016 Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Trophy. WAVE Do you know that one? The Wounded American Veterans Event was hosted by our own PYC on September 17. This event, organized by the Florida Commodores Association, gives our veterans an opportunity to get on the water for a sailboat or power boat ride. We had a good turnout of volunteers from our Club and others and, thanks to all, the day was a special one for many of the veterans. (See page 12.) You know what this one represents, I m sure. On Saturday, September 10, PYC hosted the Remember 9-11 Regatta. All was calm on this day, including the wind, and we rescheduled the regatta for another day. Yet it served to continue our Club s display of respect for the brave ones among us. Just like the World Trade Center and all that rose from the ashes of that tragic day in history, so too did the Remember 9-11 Regatta rise again. It was rescheduled and sailed on September 24 as our yacht club joined together with the Navy Yacht Club to make it happen and bring everyone together for a great day of racing on the Bay. 7 CRUISER S CORNER Upon entering Big Sabine for the September Raft Up, I saw an anchorage full of boats. It was a beautiful sight, and most of them were from PYC! It was Labor Day weekend and the weather had been threatening. There were dozens of other activities going on around town and within PYC, yet still we managed to attract about 34 boaters. The dinner Saturday evening was amazing. What a feast it turned out to be, with great tasting chicken supplied by the Club, as well as a delicious gumbo prepared by Marco Stolfi. With the addition of appetizers, side dishes and desserts, brought by all the boaters, there was enough food to feed an army. Sunday brunch proved to be more of the same with champagne and bloodies, courtesy of the Club. The rest of the day was spent relaxing, swimming, boat hopping and socializing with good friends. LOST BAY REGATTA Chuck & Peg Minnich As there were no special activities on Monday, we all spent another relaxing day with our fantastic hosts, Julie Denton and Ron Bray. What a great way to spend Labor Day. Of course, all the fun eventually had to come to an end, so with the northeast wind it was a beautiful sail back to Bayou Chico and home. Again, a special thanks to Julie and Ron for planning and hosting a great raft up. By the time you read this October JibSheet, we will have recently returned to homeport from our October joint raft up with Point Yacht Club, having participated in the Lost Bay Regatta (see photos below). 8 JUNIOR SAILING Stuart Smith Junior sailors were in full swing at the Wadewitz Regatta, Fairhope Yacht Club, over the weekend of September 24th. After beating the extreme heat and having very little wind, the young skippers hung in there making PYC proud. Savannah Baus and Gorham Partington will be teaming up to race and represent PYC and Key Sailing while sailing the Nacra 15 for the Youth Multihull National Challenge in Clearwater, Florida, October 7-10, This event will be one of the factors in determining who will represent the USA at the ISAF Youth Worlds. We wish for them both the very best sailing conditions and weather. PYC is honored to have them represent our Club and our Juniors. Don t forget that the fall junior sailing schedule can be found at ycsailing.weebly.com, Junior Sailors representing PYC at the Wadewitz Regatta in Fairhope, AL JT, Matt, Zack, James, Logan and Riley Savannah Baus and Gorham Partington Best Wishes at the Youth Multihull National Challenge, October 7-10, Gil Hackel at the USODA 2016 Atlantic Coast Championship PAGE 8 JIB SHEET BIG WINNER!!!

9 ENTERTAINMENT Nicole Ferry This year has been simply amazing for PYC. We have added so many new members, more than our original goal. We have had such great turnout for our social events. I wanted to pass on a huge thank you to Gloria McMillan for organizing our Ladies Dinner Dance. It was a pleasure for all to assist those suffering with breast cancer and to honor those survivors. As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to remind you that Making Strides of Pensacola will hold their annual walk on October 29, Registration begins at 7:00 am, with the walk to follow at 8:00 am. The walk begins at Cordova Mall. As I write this article, the walk has previously raised almost $40,000 with 564 participants. I encourage you to come out and support those women influenced by this disease. I know we have several members, current and past, who have battled the disease and would appreciate our support. Next on our social calendar is HONKY TONK ON THE BAYOU, featuring The Modern Eldorados. If you attended last year, you know to wear your cowboy boots and hats, if you have them. There was a huge turnout last year, and it was great fun! We are hoping to repeat it! If you did not get to attend last year, I promise not to disappoint you. This is a band that is not only fun to listen to, but also fun to watch perform. Please note: The event is not on a Saturday; hence, you football fans have no reason not to come. We will have a country buffet. See the flyer below for further details, and don t forget to make reservations! PAGE 9 JIB SHEET

10 Condolences Toni Stitt (Mary Antoinette Toni Stitt) The Way She Was... For those who knew and loved Toni, we would say, to use a colloquial expression, that she was all that. First Toni was one of PYC s most avid yachtswomen. She also excelled scholastically. Upon high school graduation, Toni attended the University of West Florida, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelors of Arts Degree. She received her Jurist Doctorate Degree from Florida State University Law School, graduating in the top 20 of her class. In true fashion, Toni then honorably served as a Public Defender in Escambia County for twenty-five years before retiring. Toni played hard, worked hard and loved hard. Whether at sea, in the courtroom, or among friends and loved ones, she was always true to her own self, and people were drawn by that; hence, rather than repeating segments from Toni s obituary, it seems most suitable to include some quotes that were placed on-line, following her passing. We re sure her friends won t mind that we share these. Toni was a lovely person, who never failed to mention her deep love for family. Her niece Abigail, was especially close to her heart. She spoke of her mother Mary with so much pride in how well she managed her life She held her relationships so close to her heart. May God bring a very special peace into your lives knowing that you couldn t have loved better. (Beth) She was always faithful, caring and oh so witty. I ve admired her strength and tenacity. Soar with the seagulls, my friend. We ll meet again. (Suzanne) Toni, your light will always shine over Pensacola Bay and in the courtrooms overlooking the Bay. I ll always picture you, Jimbeaux, your Mary and Captain Dan on your boat at PYC, and I ll always remember the loving Stitt home! (Donald) We are fortunate that Toni was a long-time member of Pensacola Yacht Club family. Certainly, she and her dad are organizing Heavenly Stitt Regattas! Hopefully, we can each look forward to that! 12 THE 2016 The WAVE 2016 was a joint effort between Pensacola Yacht Club and Navy Yacht Club Pensacola. PYC Commodore Alan McMillan enthusiastically endorsed the plan to conduct the Wounded American Veterans Event at Pensacola Yacht Club. NYCP Past Commodore Kathy Champagne served as the Chair and representatives of both clubs volunteered to serve on the committee. NYCP Commodore John Matthews functioned as the Master of Ceremonies. Everyone on the committee was focused on having an outstanding event. However, one small problem appeared on Friday, September 16th. The weather forecast was very ominous for conducting the WAVE as scheduled for Saturday. The WAVE committee considered the forecast and the likelihood that the event could be delayed for better weather or could be postponed to the rain date of Sunday. On Friday evening it was decided that a two-hour delay would be the best decision for the event. This decision proved to be the correct one. Saturday morning saw 16 boats ready and available to take our Wounded Veterans out for a sail on Pensacola Bay. However, the rain was still causing problems. We decided to move all the registration and check-in to the deck of the Sailing Center and located the American Legion Post Grill Masters to the area under the Sailing Center. Preparations continued to focus on getting the event started at 1200, our revised time. Captain Christopher Martin, Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Pensacola arrived with his wife and with his arrival the weather improved. WAVE proceeded under a modified schedule. Attendees sheltered in the Watson Sailing Center, where they enjoyed a musical tribute from the Corry Station Performing Arts Company Choir. The Corry Station Performing Arts Color Guard signaled the Opening Ceremonies, highlighted by an address by Captain Christopher Martin. His opening remarks focused on the historical relationship of Naval Air Station Pensacola and the support given to the World War II campaign. Capt Martin indicated that NASP was responsible for the training of all the Navy and Marine aviators that support the war effort. NASP also trained several of the aviators of our Allies. After lunch, then Navy YC Vice Commodore Bob Sutton organized the available boats to take the wounded veterans out for their cruise on Pensacola Bay. There were 30 preregistered veterans. However, it appears that many were concerned about the weather and did not show. Those who did were treated to a great day on the bay, musical entertainment provided by Jim Andrews on his golden sax, and lunch cooked by the American Legion Post 43; all beverages were furnished by the USO from NASP; and the Cookie Brigade from NYCP Provided the chocolate chip cookies, better known as Sailing Chips. Even though the weather tried to put a damper on the festivities, WAVE 2016 was a tremendous success in honoring our combat wounded veterans with a Day on the Bay. A very special thanks goes out to all the volunteers from both Pensacola Yacht Club, especially General Manager Jim Warwick, Events Coordinator Scott Segers, Dock Master Greg Spitzer and the rest of the PYC staff, and the volunteers from Navy Yacht Club Pensacola.Their efforts resulted in making WAVE 2016 a successful reality. 13 Do you ride? PYC SEMINAR SERIES Neil Thorsen Due to scheduling conflicts until 2017, there will be no more seminars this year. Speaking for all PYC members, we wish to thank Neil Thorsen for his considerable efforts to successfully secure informative and engaging speakers. Thanks, Neil! Richard & Marcia Roberts Bob Kriegel & Barbara Wade Johnny Smith is coordinating the next ride to Panama City for Thunderbeach! a huge rally October 17th - 23rd. There will be at least two groups heading over there one Thursday the 20th, and the other Friday the 21st. Call Johnny ( ), if you are interested. If you prefer the mountains, Bob Kriegel will coordinate a ride to the Cheaha State Park and the mountains in Alabama, tentatively scheduled for November 4th. Let Bob ( ) know if you are interested in joining. Bob Kriegel just returned from a motorcycle navigation of the US. He was stormed on in the central plains, snowed on in the northwest, flooded in Texas, checked out Sturgis and Rushmore, and visited relatives. He reports that this country is just unbelievably expansive and scenic, that his greatest problem was finding gas stations, and that he is ready to go again. Sturgis next year anyone?? NAUTICAL TRIVIA A Brief History of Rum at Sea (cont.) Reminder from September JibSheet: The introduction of rum from the Caribbean gave ship crew access to liquor that wouldn t spoil, but the poor quality of the rum inspired the sailors to spice it to enhance the taste. When the rum rations were reduced in 1740, sailors were given sugar and lime to make up for the decreased quantity; the mixture became known as grog. Sugar and lime not only improved the taste of the drink, but the vitamin C also helped prevent scurvy.
