3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Spring is in the air! Actually it was in the air last month, and now it is definitely here! The South s Finest Yacht Club had a very good first quarter! Our Membership Committee, led by Vice Commodore Jim Reeves has been doing a super job of recruiting new members. Fifteen new members, across all categories, joined the Club. The Committee held a big reception to welcome all of them on Tuesday evening, March 24 th. Special thanks to P/C Susan McKinnon for her PowerPoint orientation. The Club has been packed every Friday evening, and the all you can eat boiled shrimp on Wednesday evening has also been a sell-out. April will be even better! Warm weather is here, and kids are playing on the lawn. Our junior sailors are practicing and honing their skills, getting ready for the USDOA National Championship scheduled for July 18 through 26, We will be talking frequently about this summer s huge event. PYC will be hosting approximately 400 kids, ages eightto-fifteen, from across the USA and several foreign countries. It will be our Club s biggest regatta, ever. Regatta Chair, Jim Baus and his volunteers are preparing both our Club and the City of Pensacola for this historic event. In the meantime, plan on getting your boat, big or small, sail or power, blessed by our Fleet Chaplin, Father Nick Schumn. The Blessing of the Fleet is Sunday, April 12, Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated, so start planning now! Let me also give a heads-up to the membership regarding the May 27, 2015, General Membership Meeting. The By-Laws Committee, Chaired by Dr. Jay Williams, has been meeting for many, many hours since mid-january, reviewing and updating ALAN McMILLAN our By-Laws. This month, the Committee will be sending a number of proposed changes to the Board. Some of these changes are significant, some are minor. Their work will be reviewed by the Board and then sent to the General Membership for acceptance. Any By-Law issue is important to the members, so an early alert is appropriate. Because a large number of our very active members will be on a PYC-sponsored Caribbean Cruise in May, I am proposing a late May date - May 27, for the meeting, to allow those members to participate. Finally, as you have noticed, the porch from the parking lot to the Club is sinking and must be repaired. The beauty and grace of our more than100-year-old clubhouse requires our attention. This repair is not an option, but together with repairs to the dock, boat launch and parking lot, it is taxing our Facilities Committee. We are indeed fortunate to have Rear Commodore, Linda Brent at the helm of these challenging repairs. As you know, at the February General Membership Meeting, the Board committed to the membership to bring back proposals and recommend priorities for approval. At that time, we didn t know the porch needed repair. Be prepared to give the Board your best thoughts on these important matters at the May 27, 2015, General Membership Meeting. We will have written proposals to you, well in advance, on both the By-Laws and the Club repair issues. In spite of some challenges, let s focus on the positive: We have GREAT members, the membership is GROWING, our financials are OK, participation is UP, and we are having lots of FUN, enjoying our great PYC. As a friend of mine says All is Good! Savannah Baus and Jules Heitman Could there be a COMMODOR-A in this talented twosome? PAGE 3 JIB SHEET

4 Pictured above: PYC Member Charles Liberis exchanging burgees with the José Miguel Diaz Escrich, Commodore of the Hemingway Yacht Club in Habana, Cuba! (March 13, 2015) Our own Charles Liberis recently returned from his second visit to Habana, Cuba. During his visit, Charles was wearing dos sombreros. Traveling with some of his own clients, he was there to establish business contacts at the new port at Mariel, which is set to open in the fall 2015, as the largest port in the Caribbean. His other purpose was serving in his role as a member of the Board of Overseers of Stetson Law School,, which just started a Masters program in International Law. The first class with la Universidad de Habana began on March 3, 2015, and Charles, himself, was a participant. He should probably be credited with a third sombrero, since, to our benefit, Mr. Liberis is paving the way for a future PYC/Habana sail! He is helping by investigating proper procedures and documentation through a US Coast Guard contact in Cuba. Pictured above is the Hemingway Yacht Club and Marina. When Castro took over the marina in the late 1950 s, it was being developed as the largest resort casino in the world, destined to be known as the Monte Carlo de la Habana! It boasts 656 rooms and has a casino, a marina, and property frontage on the canal for piers and mega yachts. All, but the casino and showroom, were already in existence before Castro took over the marina. In fact, early stockholders included high-ranking members of the Tampa and Miami mafias, as well as such celebrities as Frank Sinatra and Donald O Conner! Although Hemingway Marina is in need of repair, it still provides good moorings and has a great bar with a bartender named José, of course! It is nice to hear that all of Habana is very safe and all vessels are protected. Americans are welcome at the Hemingway Yacht Club, as well as throughout Cuba. A car and driver can be had at $100 per day (less than a rental car). Nevertheless, in spite of all of the positives, a state of flux still exists in Cuba, as people try to get PAGE 4 JIB SHEET CUBA Here We Come! Aquí Venimos! answers from the still existent communist bureaucracy. Can you say mañana? Happily, Charles is planning a third trip in May, and he will continue to explore business opportunities, further his knowledge of international law, and pave the way for those PYC friends who have the itch to viajar a Habana! Gracias Carlos Liberis! Note: Havana is the English spelling of Cuba s capital city of Habana. In Spanish, the b and v are pronounced the same way, sort of a cross between a b and a v. When converting to English, the Spanish b was often converted to v. When pronouncing Habana, the h is silent, and each a is pronounced like ah. Thus we get ah-bah-nah. Your free Spanish lesson! 5 VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS Your Board of Trustees approved five new members at our meeting on March 18. They are William McGuire Martin, Dean and Estelle Kirscher, John Hoban, Stephanie Kress, and Darren Skitt. Soon after, on March 31 st, we signed two more memberships, namely Carol and Charles Carlan, and Barry Beroset/Laura Keene. And, returning home from a leave-of-absence, is Joe Goodard! Since January we lost four members, but as we have gained fifteen new members, we have a net of eleven new members since January 1, 2015! As mentioned in Commodore McMillan s article, the Membership Committee hosted a New Member Appreciation Reception on March 24 th. We invited all new members since January We welcomed John and Susanne Hoban; Dean and Estelle Kirschner; McGuire Martin; Stephanie Kress and Jaime White; Mary Jane and Oliver Soule; Iva Prosser; Terri Carter and Jennifer Beck; Barry Beroset and Laura Keene; Stephen Simpson and Tina Tortomas! The new members were all welcomed by Commodore Alan McMillan; Past Commodore Susan McKinnon; New Member Chairman, Julie Denton; Nicole Ferry; Claire Rees; Mark and Tonya Newbill; Jim and Susan Reeves; and Past Commodore Ron Bray. Thanks to our great members and staff. A good job by all! At the last Board Meeting, the Board approved waving the initiation fee of any prior member of the PYC who had left in good standing and now desires to come back. While this action was approved, there is no assurance as to how long this new policy will be in place. Therefore, if you know of someone who meets this requirement, please sign him or her up right away while the offer exists. The Board also approved a membership transfer from another yacht club to PYC Jim Reeves based on the current initiation fee at the club from which they have transferred being a credit against our entry fee at PYC. Finally, the Board approved a Try-Us-Out Membership which is a six-month-membership with the entry fee to be held in escrow until the seventh month. At the seventh month, the entry fee will be posted or returned, dependent upon their decision regarding membership. We are hoping that, after six months in our wonderful Club, everyone would hope to stay with PYC! Thank you again for your support and please help us build member numbers by telling your family members, friends and business associates about all the great benefits to be had by joining the South s Finest Yacht Club See you around the Club! New PYC Members Charles and Carol Carlan and Buddy Brothers March 13. No, these are not new members - at least, not yet! They are the lovely Ansley, Maddie, & Max! (niece of Kristen Roberts and granddaughters of Jim & Linda Oyler) TRIVIA QUESTION: What is the origin of the phrase son of a gun? PAGE 5 JIB SHEET

6 FROM REAR COMMODORE This month there is good news and bad news. The good news is that we have saved over $65,000, which is in our Capital Improvement Fund to be used for our major projects! The bad news is that our list of major projects seems to be growing and everything needs to be done now! Member Entrance: I am sure all of you who have come in this entrance have noticed that temporary supports are now holding up the second floor porch. It was noticed during routine maintenance that some of the siding was buckling. Further investigation revealed that one of the support posts and some beams are failing. A contractor was called in to assess the damage and to install the emergency shoring of the first floor ceiling and the second floor. Bids are now being taken to get the repair of this area done. Our first bid came in at about $29,000. Boat Ramp: We have gotten some further advice on how the ramp was originally installed and how it might be replaced. We are still waiting for the report from an engineer and a diver as to the strength of the ramp. It is estimated that this ramp could be replaced at a cost of between $35,000 and $50,000. Some members have suggested that the ramp be moved to the east end of the marina, and we will be investigating that possibility also. We want to get the best solution for our ramp, and I appreciate your input. Marina: We would really like to have all of the dock boards replaced along the front lawn and down the east side by July, when USODA is being held at PYC. This will be a very active area during this event, and we want it to be as safe as possible. Greg continues to try to get 20 feet done at-a-time, but the project is too large for him to complete it by USODA and attend to his other duties, as well. A bid from a contractor (to finish the job more quickly) came in at a little over $32,000. The Bottom Line: In round numbers the estimated costs for the major projects are as follows: $30,000 for the porch, $32,000 to complete the marina upgrade, $45,000 for the parking lot and $50,000 to replace the ramp. You can quickly see that we are about $100,000 short. The porch project must be taken care of now. There is no choice about that. We will continue to press forward to find solutions for completing the others. I welcome your input or ideas on how this could be accomplished. The Really Good News: The members of the South s Finest Yacht Club are a hardy crew, capable of taking on even the most daunting of tasks. Let s all get on board and find a way to get the job(s) done. Manager Jim Warwick and his beautiful daughter, Heather! Linda Brent LOOK WHO WANDERED INTO THE GRILLE ROOM! 7 CRUISER S CORNER The March raft-up was held in Josephine, Alabama in Pirate s Cove. The event was hosted by PYC & Point Yacht Club Members, Neil and Janet Davies. PYC participants were invited to join the Point Yacht Club in a wheelbarrow race on Saturday afternoon. In this sailboat race, the entrance fee is one bottle of adult beverage, each of which is placed in a wheelbarrow to be used as trophies! These trophies are drawn from the wheelbarrow and presented to the winners of the various classes. The trophy presentation was held at the Point Yacht Club facility, which is currently under construction. PYC s own Larry and Tracy Cost on Tra-sea, with Neil and Janet Davies crewing, won First Place in the Guest Class, and won Second Place Overall. Following the race festivities, all were invited back to the Davies home for a delicious dinner headlined by two main courses of lamb and chicken curry. This feast was prepared by Janet and supplemented by sides and desserts brought by yacht club members. Janet said she counted at least 40 people from PYC and Point Yacht Club, collectively! Sunday morning, PYC members were invited to use the Point Yacht Club Clubhouse for our famous brunch! Later that afternoon, several boats returned to Ft. McRee for an overnight stay on the way home. In all, it was a great weekend that was enjoyed by everyone who attended. There was only one problem! We consumed so much food that it was tough to squeeze in a Pirate s Cove cheeseburger Nevertheless, Peg and I managed! Our March seminar was certainly a program of interest to all of our members. Our speaker, member Lee Hargrove, presented a program on his America s Great Loop Cruise in I m sure that many of us would have loved to be crewmembers on that journey! Coming Attraction: May 19 th : Ms. Amy Miller, Port of Pensacola Director Topic: Port Update For questions or information contact Neil Thorsen at Nautical Trivia Answer: In historic sailing ships, women were occasionally smuggled aboard - and many became pregnant at sea. Childbirth on the ship traditionally happened between cannons, on the gun deck, and the child was recorded in the ship s log as a son of a gun. PAGE 7 JIB SHEET

8 FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT Dave Oerting Ahhh Daylight Savings Time and Springtime are finally here! The water temps and winds are warming up, and so is the action at the regattas and raft-ups on the Bay. Saint Patrick s Day weekend marked the completion of the Maxine Sansom Regatta Series. We had a great turnout and super nice weather for our Maxine #3 Regatta. The overall leader going into this 3rd and final regatta of the series was Atlantic Union, and she thrived under pressure and in an unexpected brisk breeze to win the finale and claim the 2015 Maxine Series Overall Championship. Congratulations, Atlantic Union! See more about this speedy sailing yacht and her crew in the May Jib Sheet, as we present our first in the new Racing Crew spotlight series to help you get to know the sailors. Special thanks go out to PYC s expert Race Committee for putting on a fine regatta, as well as to junior sailor Heather Baus at The Living Tea Cup for the unique and appropriately themed Irish spring green trophies handmade by Heather and her family for the Maxine Regatta. 10 Three short years ago, during the fall months, I used to spend Sunday afternoons throwing marks into the water for a few hearty kids. For them, that was the high point of their week. Also during that time, Kirby Smith was taking young Kirby down to Southern Yacht Club (SYC) for coaching and competition. On his long drives to New Orleans, a small business model formed in his mind. A talented sailing coach, based in the central Gulf Coast (we are talking Pensacola here) could draw enough students to support a comparable program to that of Southern Yacht Club! I was skeptical, but we could not continue on the trajectory we were on at the time. We had no idea then, that Bert Rice was going to take a job as a high school teacher and have his summers free. If you have been following this column from month-tomonth, you know that we have been growing. But, you may not have noticed the robust turnout we have had for the spring clinics! While Bert has had our Advanced Group of 6-8 kids out on the water continuing to hone their team s racing skills, Eric has been bringing along a fresh Green Fleet of Opti sailors. We have been scrambling to put together ten boats! Our own Pensacola Yacht Club has stepped up and procured dollies and rigs to help meet the sudden demand. The coaching team of Rice, Whitehurst and Amos is now drawing kids from St. Andrews Bay to Ocean Springs! Upon chatting with some parents from the Mobile Yacht Club, they said their junior programs are in a down phase. They are not only willing to make the drive over here; they are willing to pay the coaching fee! Four of our advanced fleet sailors took their game on the road to the USODA Gulf Coast Championship at Bay Waveland Yacht Club. The sixty-eight-boat fleet was dominated by the Texas programs (Lakewood 12 boats, Austin 7 boats and a smattering of other Texas teams). SYC added another 8 boats. Savannah Baus was our highest placing sailor at 12 th. Kirby Smith, Matt Grove and Jules Heitman were scattered through the middle of the fleet. Savannah had SIX Lakewood boats in front of her, and Lakewood boats were in the top four spots. So why am I harping on Lakewood? It is important to understand how the sport has changed over the years. This is not the competitive environment in which many of our kids were reared. The casual approach will not gain any ground at these larger events. Numbers matter because that breeds more competition. Competition makes better sailors. Bigger fleets are more fun! As I write this article, a larger contingent of our Juniors is preparing to head for the Dogwood Regatta in Fairhope. For some of the Green Fleeter s, this will be their first real regatta. One more step in building our numbers! PAGE 10 JIB SHEET JUNIOR SAILING The gnats at Bay St. Louis were awful! Anticipation!! John Buziak DODGE REES Ever the High Achiever! 11 ENTERTAINMENT I must admit that this year s crawfish boil was so much fun! The crawfish were not too spicy and huge! We had more than 140 members and guests attend the event. The music by Swamp Daddies was upbeat and toe tapping! A big thanks to Broussard s for boiling up what was my first crawfish of the season. And yes, to all of you unfamiliar with an authentic Louisiana crawfish boil, people stand at the table to eat! (Claire Rees stood the entire time. She is a true Louisiana gal!) I m not sure who is more ready for spring than I, other than maybe the Easter Bunny! It is that time of year to celebrate the resurrection of Christ with PYC s annual Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt. The brunch is from 11am- 2pm and is already booked solid. The Egg Hunt will be at 1:00 pm, with separate areas reserved for the smaller children and older children. We don t want anyone getting hurt by the ferocious egg hunters!!! We have games and sack races for the kids. Even if you are not eating brunch with us, please bring your children or grandchildren at 1:00 pm Easter Sunday. The Easter Bunny will make an appearance!
