3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS PYC is exploding with activity! The parking lot has just been repaved, and ocean cruisers and racers are preparing for the start of the Race to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Permits for the continued rebuilding of the west marina and boat ramp should be just around the corner and, even though our US EPA has slipped on its April date to remediate the ditch, it should also be started this month. If you have noticed, our Juniors are out in force on the water, and summer sailing is preparing to kick off in a few weeks. Raftups are getting bigger, with more and more members enjoying the fun of gathering with friends for a weekend on the water. And... as many PYC members either don t own a boat, or don t regularly get out on the water, they enjoy a great meal and drinks with family and guests at the Club. Where else are you greeted with a smile and by name then asked Would you like your favorite drink? ALAN McMILLAN The only area in which we can improve would be to actively invite more of our friends to participate in and join our Club! Normally in May, we hold a regular Board meeting on the third Wednesday and a quarterly General Membership Meeting shortly thereafter; however, with the Race to Mexico this month, some rescheduling is necessary. As a result, the regular Board Meeting will move to the fourth Wednesday, May 25th, at 6:30 PM. The General Membership Meeting will move to Thursday, June 16, This will be a particularly important membership meeting, as there will be several Bylaws changes proposed, as well as a proposal regarding the development of some of our property in the area where the ditch currently exists. More information will be provided to the membership in a specific notice prior to the membership meeting. POOL NEWS!!! JIM WARWICK Summertime is here again, and that makes it pool season! As you read this, the pool is ready for use. I wish to thank Greg Spitzer for all his hard work getting the pool ready and maintaining it year round. Lifeguards will be on duty starting Friday, May 27 th. We are happy to welcome back our head lifeguard, Suzie Busch, and her staff. We look forward to another fun and safe pool season! Note: The pool will be CLOSED for routine maintenance on the following dates: Thursday, May 26 Thursday, June 19 Thursday, July 1 We realize that this causes an inconvenience to many of you, but it is required to assure proper hygiene in the pool season! L-R Lucy Ann Orr, Charlotte Ferry and Pearce Ferry PAGE 3 JIB SHEET

4 VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS March was a fantastic month for new members (11), but April was almost as good with 10 new and renewing members. Please welcome the following new members, Artice & Robyn McGraw (Social); Walter & Emma Davidson (Regular Active); John Patrick & Linda Hall Jr. (Regular Active); James J. Reeves, Jr. (Legacy, Regular Active); James Terryl Bechtol Bubba and Ed & Stephanie Spears (Corporate Members); Jerry & Renee Long and Ryan & Karah Long (Corporate Members); and Janet Pilcher and Robin Largue (Corporate Members). A big Thank You to our Membership Committee, to Dean Kirchner, and the staff for their continued support of our Membership Recruitment Program. The Commodore, the Membership Committee, and staff will be hosting a New Member Reception for the 21 new members who have joined this year. This reception will occur on Wednesday May 11, 2016 at 5:30. All members are welcome, so please come if your schedule permits. Past Commodore Ron Bruce is the latest PYC Member who has an original Dan Dunn for our Fall Art Show. Please contact Dean Kirschner at (850) if you have a piece that you would like JIM REEVES to show in PYC s first annual art show. See Ron s original Dan Dunn painting below. As always, we ask you, our current members, to report to the Membership Committee, or to the staff, any person who might like to join our club. Please speak to your family, friends, and business associates about the values and benefits of the South s Finest Yacht Club! Our Own PYC Original Beauties! 5 FROM OUR REAR COMMODORE Parking Lot. By the time this Jib Sheet is printed (weather permitting) the parking lot will have been paved. No more rough rocks to be felt through the soles of your shoes. Not only will the parking lot be easier to walk on, but it will enhance the whole appearance of our clubhouse. The configuration remains the same except for the drop-off zone that has been expanded so it will be easier to pull up to the member entrance. Bids were taken from three contractors: Panhandle Paving and Grading, Road, Inc. and Midsouth. Panhandle was the low bidder and was awarded the contract. The drop-off zone has been expanded so it will be easier to pull up to the member entrance. Many thanks to members Ed and Edward Chadbourne who acted as consultants on this project. Throughout the process of getting bids for this work, they have generously given their advice. PYC is lucky to have so many members that have the experience to help us make sure our projects are carried out properly. Member Entrance New awnings have been ordered to replace the old tattered ones and will soon be installed. We will also be applying a new surface to the walkway and up the concrete steps to give them the appearance of brick that will be similar to the brick sidewalks. The same treatment Linda Brent will be applied to the steps going into the south (blue) porch. Thanks to Drs. David Norfleet and Barbara Wade for this wonderful suggestion. Sailing Center. The carpet is installed! It is beautiful and has made a tremendous difference in the acoustics. Greg has applied a new coat of paint. Make it a point to take a look at our newly beautified Sailing Center. The next project for this area will be to clean up the flower beds to make them as inviting as the new grass on the west side. The new curbing will stop the erosion from the water running off the parking lot and washing out the mulch. This space is available for meetings, receptions and small parties. Ask Scott about reserving it for your next event. This is just another of the value added benefits of PYC membership. Take a tour! If you have not looked around at PYC recently, just ask one of our great staff or any member of your Board to show you around. Improvements are happening all the time. Any of you who have not taken advantage of your membership benefits lately, come on down! We d love to see you! 6 FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT Ohhh Ohhhh Mexico It sounds so simple I just gotta go! Dave Oerting Dave and crew member Cali If you ve been there you know exactly what James Taylor and Jimmy Buffett were singing about, right? I d say it s all about Isla Mujeres, Mexico - the Island of Women located 550 miles south of Pensacola on the other side of the Gulf of Mexico. This small island is the finishing treasure for the sailors participating in this year s Regata al Sol, or Race to the Sun. ( Affectionately known as Isla, Isla Mujeres is a tiny little island in the Caribbean, some 8 miles off the coast of Cancun, just 4 miles long and a half mile across. It was once a fishing village surrounded by crystal clear Caribbean blue water, living coral reefs, big game fish and every other kind of sea life you could imagine. Now, it still is all that, and even more, with a focus on tourism, too. There s plenty to see and do on and around the little island, as any veteran of the popular Regatta al Sol will tell you. If you re not one of the fortunate ones to sail there, it s easy enough to hop a plane to Cancun, take the ferryboat over to the island, and join in the fun. The race starts from PYC on Wednesday May 11 at 11 a.m. The racers will arrive in Mexico over the weekend of the 14-15th, with a Welcome Party for the race crews, friends and families on Monday the 16th, followed by 3 fun-filled days of activities like beach parties, town hall receptions, basketball games in the town square with the Mexican team, skin diving, sightseeing and finally - trophy presentations and the farewell party on Thursday the 19th. Ohhh Ohhhh Mexico the Sun s so hot I forgot to go home! In May, the boating and racing season is starting off in a big way! May 7 th Pensacola Bay Championship #7 Sea Buoy Race at PBYC May 11 Regata al Sol Start - at PYC May GYA Opening Regatta (Fairhope YC) Calling all small boat sailors and enthusiastic learners - we need you on our team! May Cruisers Rally & Raft-Up May 28 Memorial Day Regatta at PBYC **Here Ye, Here Ye! PYC, under the leadership of our GYA One Design Representative Hunter Riddle, is actively seeking members and interested others to join our Viper and Flying Scot sailing and racing programs. We re looking for experienced old salts, first timers, and anyone in between, to get onboard with us and help support PYC s small boat sailing programs. All ages are welcome. Please contact Hunter at (850) or Hunter@SchurrSails.com for the inside scoop. After a week postponement, the Blessing of the Fleet, hosted by PYC and the Florida Commodores Association, was blessed with sunshine and maybe a little too much good wind. All the boats and crews received individual blessings to carry them through the year on the water. Father Nick and Commodore Alan, along with the FCA and the PYC staff, all made this an outstanding day to remember. The Amanda Russ Werner Cancer Society Perpetual Trophy Regatta (Fiesta of 5 Flags) is named in honor of one of our beloved members whom we lost too soon. This year, regatta participants raised nearly $900 for the American Cancer Society. 8 CRUISER S CORNER Chuck & Peg Minnich There is nothing like camaraderie on the water! The April raft up at Big Sabine attracted over 25 boats from a variety of yacht clubs, to include PYC (of course); PBYC; Navarre Beach YC; and Naughty Voyagers! Several revelers, whose masts exceeded the bridge height, arrived by land. Hosted by Jim Veal, fun was had by all. As usual, PYC cruisers enjoyed a sumptuous Saturday night dinner on the beach. Attendees included, but aren t limited to, Chuck Minnich; Ron Bray and Julie Denton; Janet and Neil Davies; Larry and Tracy Cost; Ron and Joanne Bruce; Mike Patterson; and Jim Veal. Apologies to anyone not listed! McRee Denton/Bray December PYC Oyler Since no one has volunteered to host this month, Peg and I will host it. Since we have family coming on Memorial Day weekend, we are moving it up a week. We realize this will be a conflict with Regatta al Sol but not everyone is going to that event. So the raftup for the rest of us will be at Fort McRee on May 21 & 22. As an aside, on Memorial Day weekend our family is planning to be in Johnson Cove, which is just east of Terry Cove, and we welcome anyone who wants to join us. Chuck Minnich PAGE 8 JIB SHEET

9 ENTERTAINMENT Nicole Ferry APRIL April in Pensacola saw lots of rain, but for those brave enough to withstand it, we had the most awesome Crawfish Boil this year. Thanks so much to Broussards Cajun Grill for boiling the largest crawfish I ve seen in ages! You should know that my husband and I had to add more Tony s. We like crawfish spicier than most! It was great to see members learning how to peel them for the first time. The band was really great. If you missed it, check out our post on Facebook to see some of the zydeco music from Zars of Zydeco. This year we moved the event to the larger patio under a tent and thank goodness for that tent! EARLY MAY Our Cinco de Mayo celebration was on the smaller patio off the blue deck. Gulf Breeze school of music had performances by their students and teachers alike. Don t forget to make reservations! Mother s Day Brunch has always been the event to attend, especially for those of you who don t cook! COMING SOON We will have a Memorial Day Kick Off the Summer Party. Check our Facebook page and your for more details as it gets closer! Lastly, the pool is open! PYC is trying to create a way for the pool-goers to order from the kitchen and bar without having to traipse into the grill all wet! It is still a bit cold for me, but that hasn t kept the kids out of it! Bring on summer! ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CRAWFISH BOIL! L-R: LeAnne Pickering and Chad Swan enjoying the crawfish Chuck and Peg Minnich 1 st time any of us have seen Peg without a smile on her face! Her foot hurts! A special thanks goes to PYC member Chuck Minnich for taking Vic out for a sail on our beautiful bay. Mr. Areta had a wonderful time in Pensacola, thanks in large part to genuine hospitality from both PYC and Rotary. To everyone at PYC who helped make a wonderful memory for Vice Commodore Arteta, many thanks! Kudos for our Junior Optimist Sailor - James Simpkins, who participated in the Fairhope Yacht Club 2016 Wet n Cool Regatta (April 2nd and 3rd). James placed 3rd in the Optimist Red Fleet. He is meticulous about his brand new Opti sailboat that his parents got for him back in November He takes twice as much time cleaning and taking care of his boat than most. James is a great young man and proud he is one of our PYC Junior Sailors. Keep up the good work James! Rarely have I seen a situation where doing less than the other guy is a good strategy.
