3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Membership continues to grow. The Board approved eight new members at the April Board Meeting. Finances of PYC are in good shape, both with new member additions, the leasing of a small, unused vacant land parcel, and the expansion of our dry storage area for additional rentals. By the time you receive this JibSheet, the Pensacola-to-Havana Race should be well under way. Thanks to Dr. John & Theresa Brannan for hosting the Satori donors and PYC dignitaries from the Pensacola Yacht Club to the Pensacola Pass to officially start the Race to Havana! We were very happy to have Commodore José M. Díaz Escrich on board to see the start of the race in Pensacola and to host all our racers, PYC members and guests to Havana and to the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba. We are grateful to President Trump for not taking any anti-cuban action before our race to Havana! Didn t our Cajun Queen Nicole Ferry throw a great Crawfish Boil? She has a lot more great social plans up her sleeve for our members, which include the Cinco de Mayo Party, the Kentucky Derby/Croquet on the Lawn Party, and many other activities. Additional Steps Forward JIM REEVES The Board has taken action to fill our mud hole given to us by DEP on the east side of our property. Additionally, we are filling the pond under the big oak tree by our back flow connector. Our staff has acted to reclaim the additional space for dry boat storage with the installation of a new electrical box, installation of clay fill, and Bahama rocks to support additional boats and trailers. The Board is still working to obtain a visa for Cesar Travado to join PYC as our full-time Sailing Director. Our appreciation to F/C Ron Bruce and Scott Segers for obtaining proposals to provide PYC with a state of the art security system for the interior of our building, our grounds, and the marina. Our insurance Committee, led by C/E Alan McMillan and R/C Denis McKinnon, is moving forward to structure our insurance purchases, value services, and staff support. Our Board continues to investigate possible replacement of Maxine, as her age and condition continue to rack up high maintenance costs. The Board, your Commodore, and the staff continue to serve you, the members, with transparency, member value, and member services. As always, we seek your input to continue to make PYC the best Club around Pensacola, Florida, and the Southeast! Our Most Active Member Your Commodore! Easter with my lovely wife, Susan. 5 FROM OUR REAR COMMODORE & SATORI FOUNDATION PRESIDENT Denis McKinnon What a difference 105 loads of dirt make for our beautiful campus! Commodore Reeves, Dockmaster Greg, and I were able to negotiate the purchase of the dirt from a contractor who was digging a retention pond on Pace Boulevard. The beauty of this transaction is that we purchased this dirt for about half the price of normal dirt, which included the delivery. Dockmaster Greg was able to get the dirt moved and spread for free again saving a great deal of money. This is the first phase of the Commodore Reeves Pitching and Putting/Putt Putt Golf Course. Just kidding! If you will notice Greg has started to improve and provide additional dry storage space with the movement of the fence and preparation of the ground in our dry storage area. When completed, along with other approved modifications to the overall dry storage area, prices for dry storage will be increased slightly, as per your agreement at a previous membership meeting. By the time you read this article, Jenny Streckel and her team will have made major improvements to the Heritage Room. Please take a look at these improvements and give a shout out to Jenny for her great work. On May 1, our brave sailors took off from the Pensacola Yacht Club on their voyage to Cuba. Many thanks to Neil Davies for his leadership and putting this great event together. Also, thanks to John and Theresa Brannan for providing their yacht the Private Island to host Satori Foundation donors, and potential donors, to view the start of the race. We are very thankful for our major donors, the Pace Family, Tom and Carol Patterson, Dr. Jim Andrews, and golfer Jerry Pate for their very generous contributions that made this event possible. Kudos to Sean Hickey and Talbot Wilson for putting together and managing a great Safety at Sea seminar. This seminar showcased our great Club, our great facilities, and our great staff. 6 ENTERTAINMENT Nicole Ferry If you didn t make it to our Crawfish Boil or our Easter Celebration, you missed a great time! We had more than 120 members and guests for our crawfish boil and 425 for our Easter celebration. The Deluna Brass Band was hands down one of the best bands we have had at PYC. I mean really, how many bands have we seen with a tuba?! We had a very festive Easter Bunny (DK) this year, a magician and a balloon artist at our Easter Celebration! With no rain in sight, PYC s egg hunt boasted a mere 3000 stuffed eggs. Kids were everywhere! This year we had sack races and egg/spoon races. Just fun! Drs. Barbara Ward & David Norfleet OUR FAMOUS CRAWFISH BOIL! Sticky fingers! The line is building! Coming soon: Cinco de Mayo is on a Friday this year! Entertainment will be provided by Gulf Breeze School of Music. The very next day, our fi rst, and hopefully annual, event will be Croquet on the Lawn, derby style. We are having a high brow croquet tournament. Wear your Derby hats (or make one!) and dress in all white, if possible. 10 SHIP S LOG The Championship of Champions (PYC) The photo below contains much more PYC history than just three sailors collecting their trophies. The occasion was the Championship of Champions held at PYC in The regatta was a new event sanctioned by USYRU (now US Sailing), and to be invited the skipper had to be the reigning National or North American Champion in a prominent one design class, such as Flying Scot, Snipe, Lightning, J24, etc. The winner of the Championship of Champions can rightfully be considered the best of the best. The C of C continues to be held annually, and the list of past winners reads like a Who s Who of Sailing in the US. Paul Schreck is one of our most decorated PYC racers Dave Hoffman after winning three North American Championships in the Flying Scot class (1970, 1972, and 1975) and countless other top flight regattas. By winning the NA s in 1975, Paul was selected to compete in the 1976 Championship of Champions, and Pensacola Yacht Club was selected to host the regatta! In this iconic photo we see Paul receiving the trophy for Second Place in this very competitive event. The regatta was sailed in Flying Scots and Rick Zern and Hunter Riddle crewed for Paul. Of course, crewing for Paul was a great honor and experience that Rick and Hunter, used to further their outstanding racing experiences. Presenting the trophy is 1976 PYC Commodore Brad Southerland. (L-R): Rick Zern, Hunter Riddle, P/C Brad Southerland, & Paul Schreck APRIL TRIVIA RESULTS Last month s trivia sailor was Rick Zern! (See photo to the left) As indicated in the above C of C article, Rick has been racing sailboats all his life. His victories in National or North American championships over the years include the Capri 25 (twice), G-Cat, F-28, and F-31 classes. Rick also holds the elapsed time record in both the Dauphin Island Race and the Round the Island Race. The list of other wins is too long for this summary, but his racing record was recognized in1995 when Rick was named PYC Yachtsman of the Year. NOTE: Last month s winner was Murt Guild! MAY TRIVIA Can you name this well-traveled & very popular captain? The fi rst member to identify him should the answer to Dave.antares@gmail.com. The fi rst to identify him correctly, wins a bottle of wine. PAGE 10 JIB SHEET

12 CRUISER S CORNER Jim & Linda Oyler The April raft-up was canceled due to the weather. The prediction was for wild winds and a lot of rain. Unfortunately, this raft-up could not be rescheduled because the month of April was so busy with Easter, Blessing of the Fleet and many other activities. The Blessing of the Fleet was well attended, but that did not stop others from getting out on the water and doing their own thing. Many boats from PYC shared Easter at Fort McRee. Congratulations to the best-decorated winners. I understand there was even an impromptu Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday Morning! (See pages 9 & 14.) Steve & Julie Orr will host the next raft-up at Pirate s Cove on the weekend of May Pirate s Cove is always a fun place to go and serves as the beginning of many stories. I m sure this time will be no different. We are anxious to see what Steve and Julie have planned. Several PYC boats and many PYC members will be on their way to Cuba when this goes to print. I m sure the stories will be many and interesting when they return. Hopefully, some of those stories will appear in the next Jib Sheet. 13 JUNIOR SAILING Stuart Smith PYC SUMMER SAILING REGISTRATION Summer Sailing will be starting soon, so please take advantage of early registration. The summer course takes beginning sailors from turning over and righting boats all the way to the White Island Day Sail. It is always satisfying to see our youth learn the ropes. The program not only helps the beginners, but we are training instructors while supporting Bert Rice, the Summer Sailing Director. Registration forms are available online and at the Club. This summer we are planning to provide a more advanced level of training for our youth. To participate in the Junior Program, the sailor must be a direct relative of a PYC member or join the PYC Junior Yacht Club. For a nominal yearly fee, non-pyc members can enroll in the Junior Program and have access to our fleet, coaching and events. The events range from weekly sailing and clinics to regattas. JUNIOR OLYMPICS PYC hosts a Junior Olympic Regatta every year. This year it will take place over the July 4 th holiday weekend. I would like to reach out to the membership to solicit help in providing an event about which PYC can be proud. We are expecting teams from all over the GYA to participate. WEEKLY SAILING Our dingy sailors are still on the water Wednesdays and Sundays. They are practicing starts, mark rounding, tacking drills and tactics. Racing may not be for everyone, but it does provide a venue to increase sailing ability quickly. The racers get out on the course in conditions from really light air to heavy air. They don t wait until the conditions are perfect. If you are interested in getting more young members on the water (or, if you know of anyone else who may be), please contact me by at SSmith@sdace.com or Bert Rice by cell at You can also contact us on Facebook. Attitude is the difference between ordeal and adventure PYC SEMINAR SERIES Neil Thorsen Our May 16 th Seminar will feature well-known local attorney, Mr. Tommy Ratchford. Adorned in full uniform, Tommy will present a program about Captain James Waddell and the CSS Shenandoah. His presentation, which will include pictures of the Civil War period, will provide a reenactment of the ship s final lowering of her flag in Liverpool in This should prove to be a very entertaining program. The speaker for our June 20 th Seminar will be Ms. Rebekah Bydlak. She graduated from Pensacola Junior College (when it was still PJC, not PSC!) and earned her bachelor s and master s degrees from the University of West Florida. She is the executive director of the Coalition to Reduce Spending, the only national organization focused solely on reducing spending and debt. She manages organizational development and strategy, serves as spokesperson for the Coalition, oversees programs, and manages daily written communications. The Coalition recently launched SpendingTracker.org, the first-ever tool to track every vote for federal spending in real time. She will also talk about the potential for new technology (like this tool) to better connect people with their elected officials and to disrupt old policy issues. Both meetings will begin at 6:00 PM and will last about one hour. We will have hors d oeuvres to go with your favorite beverage before and during the program. PAGE 13 JIB SHEET

14 FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT April s yachting activities got off to a fast start with events all around the bay. Dave Oerting Dave and crew member Cali April 8th: The Navy Yacht Club hosted their Commodore s Cup Regatta #2 with PYC and NYCP member Tony Nichols, racing his Kelly 24 Phoenix across the fi nish line in 1st Place ahead of 8 other competitors. Congratulations to Tony and his crew on another victory at sea. April 9th: PAC s chapter of the Florida Commodores Association hosted the 2017 Pensacola Bay Blessing of the Fleet. More than 20 yachts turned out on this beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon to be blessed by PYC Fleet Chaplain, Father Nick, with the traditional sprinkling of holy water upon their decks. The blessing was especially timely for those participants preparing to sail to Havana, Cuba in the Pensacola a la Habana Regatta. On a lighter note, we know that anytime there are two or more boats on the water at the same time then there s just gonna have to be a contest of some sort, right?! The Blessing of the Fleet was no different as it included a contest for the best decorated yachts, and most all of them were decked out for the occasion. The Best Decorated Yachts in the 2017 Blessing of the Fleet were as follows: Powerboats 1st Place 2nd Place 3rd Place Sailboats Bruce Cobia s Safari 1 st Place Johnny Smith s Alafair Ron Bruce s Lady Chardonnay 2 nd Place Jim Oyler s Parlay Steve Hancy s Day Dreamer 3 rd Place Kim Kaminski s Helldiver (See page 9, for pictures.) The on-the-water activities will continue to crest throughout the next few months as the sun turns up the heat on the action on Pensacola Bay. As a member of the Gulf Yachting Association (GYA), PYC has a wide variety of interclub yachting opportunities available to our members. One such opportunity is the ability to compete in small boat one-design and big boat performance handicap rating formula (PHRF) regattas at the GYA yacht clubs along the coast from St Petersburg and Sarasota, FL to New Orleans, LA, westward into TX and northward to AR, Jackson, MS, Birmingham, AL and beyond. PYC member, accomplished sailor and sailmaker Hunter Riddle, has been an outstanding representative for our Club at these events over the years. We are fortunate to have him among us, and we are even more fortunate that he has volunteered again this year to help PYC fi eld a competitive team in these interclub regattas. Hunter and PYC are always looking for PYC members to join our regatta teams. All are welcome. If you re a fi rst timer who would like to try sailing in these competitions, or an old salt who longs to get back on the water, or if you re somewhere in between, we want you and need you on our team. Hunter can show you all the ropes! Please contact Hunter at (850) or Hunter@SchurrSails.com to find out when and where you can start practicing and racing with our team. HIHO, DO A Special Invitation To the Respectable American Boating Community, On behalf of the Board of Directors of Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba (HIYC of Cuba) and on myself we greet you very carefully and we are pleased to invite you formally to participate in the activities in celebration of the coming XXV Anniversary of this Cuban nautical institution that was founded on May 21st, We are pleased to announce that in greetings to this important event, we have planned a program of 19 nautical events, which began this January with the Conch Republic Cup Regatta, and the celebration of activities that will be extended to the next month of June. Standing out among these activities, is the Regatta XXV Anniversary of HIYC of Cuba, on May 19th, in which we expect the participation of about 100 boats that will sail along Havana s Malecon, and parallel to it, always in front of the Cuban capital, we will have Optimist, Hobby Cat, and Snipe regattas and jet skis competitions. On May 20th, always in front of Havana, with the participation of schooners, speedboats, mega- yachts, fi shing yachts and promenades, we will have the XXV Anniversary Nautical Parade. On May 21st, the day of the founding of HIYC of Cuba in 1992, we will hold a large party that will involve about 1,000 members of the nautical community of more than 70 countries. We hope to have the honor that you will be one of these distinguished people. The participation of you, or a representative of your nautical institution, in these celebrations will be an important support and recognition to this Cuban nautical institution, which will contribute to broaden and strengthen its prestige before the Cuban society and the international nautical community. Many of the organizations that are attending the event have shown interest in honoring us with a plaque or diploma as part of the recognition of our work in all these years, we are letting you know in advance, that it would be our pleasure to receive such recognition from your institution as well. I m glad to communicate to you that despite the obstacles and diffi culties encountered in its development and love crossing to reach its fi rst quarter of a century, HIYC of Cuba has become a bastion in the defense and rescue of the history and nautical traditions and in a sanctuary of the love of the sea and the friendship and fraternity between the members of the international nautical community and the lovers of the sea and the nautical recreation. I take this opportunity to reiterate my greetings and express to you that we will be very happy to share with you the celebration for the 25th Anniversary of HIYC of Cuba. With my best regards, Jose Miguel Díaz Escrich, Commodore PAGE 15 JIB SHEET

16 Do you ride? Bob Kriegel PYC Sons of Boaters Motorcycling News We had a great ride April 15th. The weather was perfect, the route was scenic, with light traffic and great roads; life was good, but few showed up to play. Steve Harp, the leader of the pack, and Bob Kriegel were the only riders. We rode to Brewton, Al, through the backcountry roads, around Pace and Jay. Burgers and beer at the almost famous Oaks Restaurant (est. 1929) in Brewton kept our energy high for the return trip via wonderful county roads to Flomaton and then Highway 29 back to Pensacola. We ended at Ollie s on 9 Mile Road - of necessity, to quench a thirst that developed from all the great roads and weather (and, we were successful)! Our next meeting will bejune 13th, 6:00, at PYC. We need to establish a plan for the second half of the year (scheduled rides, or just ad hoc; conscript ride leaders, etc.), talk about the upcoming rides to Little River Canyon (Desoto State Park) in Alabama, June 30th - July 2nd; and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (biggest/baddest/best) in South Dakota in early August. Put the meeting on your calendar! Have fun! L-R: Dave Norfleet, Johnny Smith, Barbara Wade, Darryl Harrison, Gary Folse, Bob Kriegel, Dan Smithson Upcoming rides include June 30th-July 1st: A weekend ride to Little River Canyon, Desoto State Park in Northeast Alabama. Great scenic destination, up in the mountains, with fantastic riding. We have three two-bedroom cabins reserved, so if you are interested, let Bob Kriegel know, and get your cabin - or room - confirmed. Early August: PAGE 16 JIB SHEET Sturgis Bike Week!
