3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS September signals the beginning of fall, football, and the Ladies Dinner Dance! If you have not made your reservations, it s not too late!! The evening promises to be lively with the sounds of Clark and Company, great food, great gaming tables, great silent and live auction items, and best of all; great friends!! September is also a time of lovely weather, barring tropical disturbances. Though the weather may be perfect for a day at the pool, keep in mind that the lifeguards are no longer on duty. Past Commodore Alan McMillan is expecting a large crowd for the United States Optimist Dinghy Association s Southeastern Championships to be held September As a qualifier for the National Championships, this prestigious regatta will bring participants from around the country. Parents and spectators may view the regatta from the fifty-two foot catamaran, Wild Hearts or a 50ft double Decker Pontoon Party Barge. As an added bonus, the young sailors will have the opportunity to attend a session at the National Flight Academy aboard NAS Pensacola. Be on the lookout at the Club for the beautiful program that accompanies the event. You ll be delighted at the outpouring of community support and sponsorships! Thank you to P/C Alan McMillan, PRO/Past Commodore John Matthews, and publicists Talbot and Virginia Wilson and the committee chairs and volunteers who have worked many months to make this regatta a success. Thank you, as well, to the members of PYC who have supported this fine event! Mark your calendars and come down to the Club to see these fine young sailors in action! Let s show our guests what real Southern hospitality is all about. And speaking of Southern hospitality, The Wharf Raftup was the place to be in August! Thank you to Trish and Rusty Bond for Chairing this fabulous raft up. Also, to Ivan and Jenny Streckel, P/C Alan and Gloria McMillan, Marco Stolfi, P/C Sam and Anna Foreman, and Linda Whitman for hosting the fun parties. A great time was had by all! At the August General Membership meeting, Dr. Andy and Bonnie Candela, along with their children Alicia and Andres, presented the Club with a custom gaming table. Specially ordered, this beautiful table is emblazoned with the PYC logo, and is located in the Grille Room. According to Andy and Bonnie, the double nines are the game to play. Want to learn? Come on down to the Club and let s learn together. Thank you, Candela family, for this gift that will bring many hours of enjoyment to Club members! Recently, the Club was faced with challenges as we underwent necessary budget cuts to aggressively begin paying down debt. With a declining membership base, and rising costs, it was necessary to aggressively posture ourselves to reduce our debt load. I am extremely proud to report that we have eliminated the balance on our line of credit. This could not have been done without the support of all. My gratitude is endless to the Board, management, staff, and membership. Working together towards this common goal has made it possible; and I thank you from the bottom of my heart! Please be assured that reducing debt while delivering an enriching Club experience remains a top priority. SUSAN MCKINNON September 13 Page 3
4 This month we welcome four new members to PYC. We are delighted to welcome back to the Club Dr. Joseph O Daniel and his wife, Eleanor. Joe, a retired ER physician, is restoring a Morgan 30 sailboat. Now that he has more leisure time to enjoy a PYC membership, he decided it was time to rejoin the club as a Regular Active member. Elizabeth Marshall Denny-Abernathy joined as a Regular Active member this month. Her father, Seymour Marshall, is a Regular Active member but is no longer able to utilize his club membership, so Bess has assume his membership. Bess is the President of Studer Properties and Investments. Jackie Johnston and Malcolm joined as Social members. Jackie is a cosmetologist at Crane and Company Hair Salon. Joshua and Brittany Steigner have joined our Club as Transitional Active members. Josh is in flight training at NAS and plans to sail his Hobie 16 from the Club beach. Please welcome these new members when you see them around the Club. While we are thinking of welcoming new members, I want to reiterate some of what we discussed at the August General Membership meeting. The secret to welcoming and retaining new members is to get them engaged in the Club. The first year or two of membership is the most critical in keeping them as members. That being said our membership has a broad range of interests as you might expect from a large group of people. It is our Club membership that helps us find friends to do things with us. Some of the activities are visible like raftups, fishing, bridge, and yoga immediately come to mind. Others are not so visible such as the Ham Radio Club, scuba diving, canoeing and biking. The Membership Committee is working on a directory of these activities with a description to include in membership information. However, it s important that new members find the way to become involved in some of these activities and groups. And this where the groups function on our new website becomes important for all Club members. Each group on the PYC website will identify a contact person making the initial contact with the group easy so one can join the activity. The Membership Committee encourages you to establish a group on our website for any activity you think a new member would find interesting. This will also serve the current membership who may be interested in these activities. Page 4 September 13 VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS FROM REAR COMMODORE BEN MYERS The PYC Marina is falling apart and needs some serious attention. The Board has authorized expenditures to repair the wave attenuator. This will be the first phase in our phase-by-phase repair of the Marina. To begin with we will remove any pilings and finger piers that are not usable which will be followed by the demolition and replacement of the eastern walkway on the dock. Once we have access, we can begin to replace the dock, finger piers, and mooring pilings. Commodore McKinnon, Treasurer Dan Smithson, and our General Manager Jim Warwick have done a great job getting the expenses of the Club under control, but that doesn t mean we are flush with cash. Our game plan going forward is to enlist the men and women power of the membership to put forth a little sweat equity in this project. We will be looking for volunteers to form work parties under our Dockmaster Greg Spitzer s direction. We all have unique talents that the club can benefit from to complete this project. Also donations can be made to the Club earmarked for this project. I look forward to hearing from you and working beside you. BOB DAWKINS

6 Where has the summer gone? There never seems enough time for fun in the sun during the summer. First of all I want to thank all the volunteers for their participation in the W.A.V.E. event last month. There are too many of you to name, but know this, without your help it wouldn t have gone as smoothly as it did. You made PYC look great and all the Veterans had a great time. Thanks again. I was hoping to able to announce the winners of the annual PYC Commodores Regatta, however the weather got the best of us and prevented the regatta from going on as scheduled. We plan to reschedule both this Regatta and the Family Fund Day for sometime in the near future. So Commodores, keep practicing, you will still have to race in those little boats! Our PYC Lipton Team has been practicing for the Sr. Lipton Regatta, which is scheduled for Labor Day weekend at the. This year s captain of the team is Hunter Riddle. It s a fun weekend with good racing and lots of great parties. Cheerleader s are welcome to come over and support our Team s effort in this inter Club event. This will be a very busy month for Regattas on our Bay starting with Cruising Couples and Chappell/ Stitt Regattas followed by the USODA Southeastern Championship competition on the weekend of We are anticipating 100 to 150 Junior Sailors to participate from all over this region in this event at our Club. With everyone s help we can do a great job this year, and will be considered as a venue for an even bigger event in two years. Rounding out the month will be the PYC#1 Regatta. So as you can see we have a very busy racing schedule this month and are in need of as many volunteers as we can get. John Matthews has offered to volunteer his time to teach a class for new Race Committee volunteers on September 10, at 6pm in the Watson Sailing Center. If you would like to learn more about becoming a part of this great team of volunteers, plan to join us for this informative workshop. We are now in the heart of Hurricane Season so make sure your plan is in place for your boat whether it is at the marina or in dry storage. I hope we have no need for it, but please be prepared. As always, I look forward to seeing you on the water, in the water, or around the water It s the only way to live. Page 6 September 13 FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT BOB SUTTON WANTED Volunteers to Serve on RACE COMMITTEE PYC is looking for members interested in learning about the duties and participation requirements for working on the PYC Race Committee. 10 CRUISER S CORNER Two dozen boats and over 80 people converged on The Wharf for the August raft up in spite of dire weather predictions. It was great to see some new faces along with old friends. Most of the boaters who cruised over on Friday did see quite a bit of rain on the way over but it stopped midafternoon. After early morning showers the next two days, the sky remained threatening but the rain stayed away. We decided to forego the Oasis Water Park and Lazy River due to the cool, cloudy weather. That simply made more time for shopping and partying aboard the boats. Friday and Saturday evening were both kicked off with cocktail parties hosted by members who were renting condos. We had lots of fun and great food at both parties. Each evening was capped off with a laser light show, lighted palm trees, and dancing in the street presented by the Merchants Association of The Wharf. The evening show was a new addition this year and was well received. After the show we adjourned to the boats to continue the party. Sunday brunch was back in the condo. A big thank you to all of our condo hosts this year. The sun began to peak out from behind the clouds during brunch and we all enjoyed a beautiful trip home. The next raft up is scheduled for September 21. Our destination is still to be determined so stay tuned. See you on the water.
