COMMODORE S COMMENTS ALAN MCMILLAN 2010 was a good year for PYC with Commodore Sam and Anna Foreman leading us successfully through a number of challenges. I thanked them in last month s article and do so again this month. PYC also measures its success in financial terms. As a private club we need to meet and exceed member expectations and we need to do so in a financially sound manner. We ended 2010 with positive cash on hand, no outstanding balance on our line of credit and in the black for total operations. Our two outstanding loans, the Ivan loan will be paid off in early 2013 and the Ballroom expansion loan in Both our Board and Treasurer Dan Smithson has kept an eye on our collective financial stewardship and we will continue to manage in that manner. Our new General Manager Jim Warwick is on board and I hope most of you have met him. If you have, you know that Jim is very outgoing! When we asked him about his management style during the interview process, he described himself as hands on. Boy was that an understatement! Jim is everywhere meeting members, moving tables, carrying food orders, attending Board and Committee meetings. Jim is settling in to life at the South s Finest Yacht Club very quickly. One of our priorities for 2011 is membership. To that end, we will propose several changes to our By-Laws at the PYC General Membership meeting on February 17. We are proposing to reestablish the Non-Resident Membership category. This was a successful membership category many years ago and most GYA and FCYC Club s offer non-residents some type of membership. The Board has deliberated about this issue and unanimously feels that we have a large number of potential prospective members to which this will appeal. Please read the proposed By-Law change on the member section of the website and the bulletin board at the Club. Additionally, we will make a major outreach to Young Adult Membership category. Rear Commodore and Membership Chair Susan McKinnon is passionate about the Club s future. The changes we are proposing will greatly enhance getting and retaining younger members. Our last category of proposed By-Law changes is Honorary Members. The Board believes that a Honorary Member should not vote or hold a Board office since they do not pay dues. We propose grandfathering those already in this category, but any new Honorary Member will not be able to vote. We are proposing that any Regular member who has achieved 50 years of PYC membership will become Honorary and no longer pay dues. All of those in this category have given much to PYC over a lifetime and the Board feels that we should honor them and their lifetime commitment. Lastly, we propose that the surviving spouse of a past Commodore also be so honored. For the record, many if not most in these two categories have already be given a life Honorary membership and only a small number of others would automatically go into the newly proposed honorary categories. We are looking to an exciting Spring and Summer at the Club, so come out and join in the activities. February 11 Page 3

membership report SUSAN MCKINNON The membership program at PYC is gathering steam in Just last month, we have added five new members. Join me in welcoming our newest members Andrew McMillan, Jason Knoll, Margaret Biggs, Jay Jordan, and Anil Raj. Joining as a Legacy Member, Andrew McMillan has a long history at PYC having grown up sailing on the bay and teaching sailing to Junior Sailors. He is the son of Neil and Susan McMillan, as well as the nephew of Commodore and Gloria McMillan. Andrew is married to Meghan and is an active sailor in our PHRF fleet, crewing on Finesse. Also, joining as a Legacy member is Margaret Biggs. Margaret is the daughter of long time members Walter and Molly Biggs. Margaret joins with sons, William and Matthew. She is an artist having donated her beautiful seascapes to our Ladies Dinner Dance. Jason Knoll is seen often around the Club sailing Black Ice with brother John. In fact, this past year they took top honors winning the Wednesday Night Series. Jay and Maggie Jordan have rejoined PYC. Jay and Maggie were members in the late 90 s. They enjoy recreational boating aboard their powerboat, Bentley. Our newest Active Member is Naval Architect Anil Raj. Anil and wife, Sheri can be seen on Friday nights at the Club having already made many friends. Anil and wife, Sheri enjoy sailing aboard their Hunter 44, Shonti. If you have a friend or family member who is interested in joining the South s Finest Yacht Club, invite them to our Prospective/New Member Orientation Night, February 1. We will meet upstairs in the Board Room at 7pm. At this meeting, new and prospective members will learn about the many activities the Club has to offer. This meeting will take place every other month on the first Tuesday beginning this month. Mark your calendars and plan to attend the General Membership meeting on Thursday, February 17. We will be voting on proposed by-laws changes regarding membership categories including Young Adult, Non-Resident, and Honorary Memberships. The proposed changes are posted on the Club bulletin board and website for your review. Together, let s make 2011 a banner year for Membership! Active Member Boat Photos Approved for Display in the Club Active members of the Club may now submit one 8x10 color photo of a boat (power or sail) currently owned to the PYC Trophy Committee for display in either the Clubhouse or Sailing Center. All matting, frames and captions will be made identical by Jean Russ of Creative House 1200 N. Palafox ( ), the vendor for this project. To participate submit your boat photo with a printed caption stating the boat s name, make, model, and member/owner s name to Creative House. Each framed photo has an estimated cost of $60 and is financial the responsibility of the member/owner. Other guidelines are as follows: 1. Boat size limit: The minimum length over all for sailboats shall be 24 feet and 30 feet for powerboats. Trophy Committee has the option to adjust the limits on a case-by-case basis with no maximum length limitation. Only one boat photo per member will be accepted. 2. The photo should be taken while the boat is underway or at anchor but NOT secured to a dock or in a slip. Also printed information submitted with the photo should include the boat s name, manufacturer, model and owner(s) name. All expenses for the photo including matting and framing are the responsibility of the member/boat owner. Once the Club receives the framed photo it will be considered a gift and become the property of the PYC. It may only be returned to the owner by request and at the Club s discretion. 3. Once the photo is framed it should be submitted to the Club office for review and approval for display. The photo will then be displayed in an area that the Trophy Committee feels best enhances the appearance of either the Clubhouse or Sailing Center. For more information or explanation, contact Johnny Smith at (850) jmsmith380@yahoo.com or Neil McMillan at (850) somcmillan@juno.com. All requirements should be read and understood prior to submitting your photo for framing. Requirements are available in the Member Section of the PYC website. So, get those photos to Jean Russ and get your boat s photo on the wall! Page 4 February 11

HOSPITALITY There is LOVE in the kitchen this month at PYC. Guest Chefs have been preparing fabulous entrees for members to enjoy during lunch and dinner. Recently the Friday Night Special included a Grouper entree and a Beef Tips entree that were both out of this world. Make a reservation today and bring a friend to lunch or dinner at the Club to taste some of the delightful culinary dishes coming out of our kitchen. GWEN HERRIN & JEAN FLEEGE Other changes include only dining from the menu on Thursday Nights and dining from the menu or the soup and salad bar on Friday Nights. But believe me, you won t miss the buffets because the entree specials are so wonderful! Last month the PYC Committees were busy planning some fun activities and events for members and their families to enjoy during the year. In March a Family Movie Night is on the books for Friday, March 11, and the Ladies Fashion Show Luncheon is scheduled for April. However in between there will be yoga classes, game day, raft ups, regattas, and of course, every Friday Night is a party at PYC with everyone gathering to celebrate the end of another work week not to mention a chance to win the Split Ticket drawing or the computer drawn Jackpot. reminders for events and activities will be sent out to the membership, so there is no excuse for missing a single minute of PYC fun. The Jib Sheet continues to be ed monthly to the membership and printed copies are available in the lobby of the Club. Contact Erika, our Receptionist, to update your address, if you have not been receiving our s. You may also contact her to request having a printed copy mailed directly to your home. CLUB MANAGER REPORT I wish to take this opportunity to thank all of the members who have made me feel so welcomed! It is truly overwhelming. I am excited to be your new General Manager at PYC. This is an exciting time in Pensacola with a new mayor, the Maritime Park Project underway, and the celebration of the 100 th anniversary of Naval Aviation. I look forward to getting to know all of you and becoming part of the community. As I am writing this, my wife called to inform me that our 4 th grandchild was just born and that I should get on an airplane to come see her! With that, I will quickly end this article. See you at the Club! JIM WARWICK February 11 Page 5

fleet captain s report If two sailboats are in sight of each other, there is a race going on, attributed to a past Commodore of the Mobile Yacht Club. The urge to race sailboats has probably been instilled in us since man first hoisted a sail. In early naval warfare ships struggled to get to windward (the weather gauge). If they failed to gain the gauge or became too battered to win, they ran before the wind as fast as they could to escape a pursuer. This was probably the first windward/leeward race. Since those heady days when your life depended on your ability to make a boat sail fast, less lethal forms of racing have evolved in to a dizzying array of levels and classes. For the uninitiated, the first great divide is between handicap (PHRF) and One Design racing. As you sit at the bar and gaze out on the marina you are looking at a heterogeneous fleet of sailboats, no two alike. In order to have a competitive race between these boats, a handicap system in the form of time adjustments has to be implemented. This adjustment can be granted at the beginning of the race (Bermuda Start) with the objective of all boats finishing at the same time. Or time may be granted at the end and the corrected time, proportional to the length of the course, determines the order of finishing. You will also notice certain classes of boats in the marina (Tartan 10, J-29) and in the dry storage (Lightning, Flying Scot, Buccaneer, 420, Melges 20), these boats can be raced without handicaps ( at least not obvious ones). These boats all adhere to Class Rules that ensure all the boats perform nearly same, or at least over a narrow range; hence the term One Design. The object here is that the winner is determined purely through expert seamanship, superior knowledge and treachery. Within each of these categories there are multiple levels of racing: Club Sailing, Circuit Sailing and National and International Championships. Over the past decade PYC has been privileged to host numerous National and Regional Events (Circuit Events) and has become a preferred venue by a number of One Design Sailors of Thistles and Flying Tigers. We send sailors on the road to Circuit Events (Capedevielle) and the Juniors Circuit. We host circuit events as well as local regattas like the Schreck, Jubilee, and WFORC. In spite of all this activity there is a gaping hole in the racing opportunities afforded to local sailors: Club Racing. To the extent that Club Racing exists it is limited to the ocean racers and sport boats that populate the PHRF fleet. One Design Club Racing is currently largely the province of the Junior Sailors in Optis, Lasers, 420s, and occasionally Flying Scots (and the past Commodores who bumble around in the Excites once a year). Why should they have all the fun? Not so long ago the norm around the country was that most of the racing took place at Club venues. A healthy fleet would range from a dozen to forty boats of a particular class. This created a range of skill levels from beginners to highly proficient racers. One Design classes ensured the last boat in the fleet was close enough at the end to see the winner cross the line, in most cases. As a crew gained experience you could move up in the fleet. Even if you could not beat the Fleet Champion one could take satisfaction in beating a boat that you had not beaten before. From top to bottom there was the excitement of competition. When JOHN BUZIAK the local Fleet Champion tired of beating up on the locals, they would hit the local circuit. They may even qualify for a national championship. In our current state we have beginners and champions and very few in between. Somewhere over the past several years we have lost our way. Last year we made some progress in filling this hole in our on the water program. In addition to our traditional Capdevielle effort we got some folks out on the Lightnings (13 boats) at Jubilee (and 16 Thistles). Erik Prochaska and Mark Mayger will freely admit THEY HAD FUN! This year we hope to start closing the gap in other ways. The Capedevielle series consists of sixteen events. Each event requires a minimum of five participants. That creates eighty opportunities to participate! Conversely, we cannot expect a handful of people to give up their personal lives to cover eighty slots. The solution is to grow the pool! In my happy place we will have 20 or more people combine to hit all sixteen events. To reach this lofty number, in my happy place, we get the three Flying Scots that belong to the Club out on a regular basis to race against each other. While you may not feel confident enough in your skills to represent the Club you grow in your self-esteem as you get out their and some fun flying a spinnaker. If you are interested in joining the pack contact either Doug Sansom, or Adam Sammis. Beyond Capdevielle, there will be a wide range of opportunities to sail one-design sailboats over the course of the coming year. A number of our local sailors have been hitching rides on local boats (Melges 20s, Lightnings) and visiting boats (Flying Tigers, Thistles). This year we will host the Flying Tiger East Coast Championships and North Americans, and potentially the 420 Gulf Coast Championship. At the GYA Opening Regatta there will be Flying Scots, Lightnings, and Lidos, some looking for crew. We expect another good crop of boats for the Jubilee. If you have an interest let me know (buziakj@cpmechanics.com) and I will do my best to connect you with a boat. Coming up fast on the horizon is the North U Racing Tactics Seminar at Fairhope YC. North Sails has put a series of presentations together to help all levels of racers move up in the fleet. If you have not been to the new Fairhope Yacht Club this is a great opportunity to enjoy this facility and meet some of our sailing neighbors. In order to participate in Junior Sailing events, regattas, and the summer sailing program, Junior Sailors need to renew their membership the PYC Junior Yacht Club this month. JUNIOR SAILORS NEWS One of our Junior Sailors A.G. Stitt has been sailing the Sunfish, which is a one-design single-handed boat that was once very popular at PYC until Hurricane Ivan took the fleet. We are starting to bring it back. A. G. has 2 Sunfish boats and a friend who is donating 3 Sunfish boats to the PYC Jr. Yacht club in honor of the Stitt family. So if you know of any Sunfish around town for a good price this is an excellent boat to begin or move out of the Optimist when it s time. PYC s Dodge Rees was again among the 56 talented athletes named to the US Sailing Development Team for These up-and-coming sailors are aged 13 years or older as of January 1, 2011, who have shown a strong work ethic, willingness to work within a team, and promising results at international events and high-level domestic events. George Gamble is again the winner of the annual Junior Sailing Reserved Parking Space Silent Auction. We thank him for his generous donation to the PYC Jr. Sailing Program. There are many upcoming events for the Junior Sailing fleet in our area. For more information go to and click on schedule and look on the right side for youth events. Also PYC wants to sail in as many Capdevielle events (GYA inner club racing on Flying Scots) as possible this year. Doug Samson and Adam Sammis Co-Chair the Capdevielle Committee. Please contact me if you are interested in racing for PYC in these events, adult sailing, or information on summer sailing programs at sailingdirector@pyc. gccoxmail.com or call (850) ext February 11 Page 7

CRUISER S CORNER JIM & LINDA OYLER The 2011 Raft-up season got off to a great start with the New Year s Day raft-up brunch in the Sailing Center. The weather was windy, rainy, foggy, and chilly but it did not dampen the spirits of the fifty or so hardcore fun seekers gathered to usher in a New Year filled with a plethora of exciting yachting events. As always the food was delicious and the mimosas and bloody Marys were free flowing. As the 2011 Cruising Chairmen, we are looking forward to scheduling some fun raft-ups this year. Pirate s Cove on February 12 looks like a good place to start. We plan to continue the favorite annual raft-ups, including The Wharf, a couple of Blue Angel Shows, Halloween, and the Christmas Marina Party. Other events in the planning stages are a Summer Sailstice on the weekend before the solstice, a long weekend to Biloxi, Panama City, or Port St. Joe, and a Christmas boat parade around Pensacola Bay. We are also considering predicted log runs or some type of poker run for power boats with trophies to be presented at the Yachting Awards in December. Please feel free to offer suggestions. We welcome all new ideas that encourage people to enjoy their boats and the beautiful boating venue that surrounds us. See you on the water! LYN HARRISON Come get your Captain Ron on!!!!! Cruisers, boaters, sailors, and dreamers... join us for a night filled with frolic and family fun as we ring in the 2011 Boating Season and celebrate as only Captain Ron and crew can! On March 11, bring the entire family out for the regular Friday night socializing at the bar and dinner. Enjoy one of the Captain Ron Cocktails created specially for this event and don t forget to buy lots of split tickets, and mingle in the Grille Room to show off your Captain Ron attire. Yes there will be a prize for Best Captain Ron Look-alike, Best Sarong, and best kids Captain Ron costumes. A special menu for the event will include a Captain Ron Burger (one of PYC s yummy burgers with a twist ) or dine from the Club s regular menu, new soup and salad buffet, bar menu, or kids menu. At 8pm head for Ballroom B and lay out your beach blanket or set up your beach chair for a showing of Captain Ron on the big screen! The entire family will enjoy this fun PG-13 rated movie. However for those with children not quite old enough to see the movie, babysitting will be available in the Watson Sailing Center from 6 to 10pm at a cost of $10.00 per child which includes supper with a choice of chicken fingers or hot dogs with fries. RESERVATIONS FOR BABYSITTING MUST BE MADE BY MARCH 8 AT NOON. If there is not enough participation (at least 6 children), we will not be able to provide this service. This is just the beginning of some Family Friendly events at PYC that are in the works for members and their families to enjoy this year. All the events will be a wonderful opportunity for members to bring their friends to the Club and show them what PYC is all about!!! Page 10 February 11 CENTERBOARDS & SWABBIES

FCYC REPORT FCYC held its General Meeting at the Lauderdale Yacht Club (LYC) in January. West Coast Fleet Captain Tony and Kaye Cole and FCYC Director Bob and Vicki Riggs represented PYC at this meeting. Thirty-three of the thirty-six FCYC Clubs attended this meeting. BOB RIGGS The LYC is strategically located for PYC cruisers. The facility is contiguous to the ICW and provides ready access to the Port Everglades inlet. Yachtsmen can head out under the 17the Street Causeway, transit the inlet, cross the Gulf stream and arrive at Bimini s Big Game Club in time for a lunch of cracked conch, peas and rice, and of course, a cold Kalik. With recently updated and renovated marina facilities, LYC provides over 200 feet of transient dockage. For reservations telephone Dock Master Christine Steward at Attendees enjoyed an array of exciting and elegant social activities during the weekend. Friday evening was highlighted with a sunset pavilion party featuring live steel drum music, hors d oeuvres, and a Bahamian cookout. Saturday morning found Directors spouses touring the historic Bonnet House and Bartlett Estate followed by a Ladies Luncheon and shopping. An evening dinner and dance cumulated the day! On Saturday Commodore Stanley called the meeting of the FCYC Directors to order at 1300 hours. A number of informational items were discussed: 1. Government Affairs Chairman Perlet reported that the EPA has approved the use of 15% ethanol for automobiles built later than The national Boating Federation and the Marine Manufacturers Association are questioning this decision. The latter agency has filed a law suit seeking a stay of EPA s decision pending further study of the impact of higher percentage ethanol on marine engines and systems. 2. Chairman Peret is working to secure the appointment of a 19 th member to the Governor s boating Advisory Committee. The new position would represent the interests of not for profit Yacht Clubs. 3. Boat US on line boating safety course has been approved for Florida Wildlife Commission certification. 4. Coast Guard Liaison Jack Burwell indicated that the coast Guard has identified problems with VHF radios using the Digital Selective Calling System (DSC). The devices are improperly routing traffic to channel 16. As a consequence of this issue, the Coast Guard has ordered a hold on the sale of DSC capable radios until March 25, 2011 to allow manufactures to correct the problem. 5. Membership Chairmen Riss and Griffin announced that the Pelican Isles Yacht Club in North Naples and the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club Corinthian, located between Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale, were exploring membership with the FCYC. 6. Fleet Captain Tony Cole reminded cruisers that FCYC Cruising Logs for the annual Yachtsman Awards for most Clubs visited and most miles traveled were due not later than the end of January. Winners for the East and West coasts will be announced at the FCYC March meeting. 7. Fleet Captain Cole also encouraged cruisers to sign up soon for the April FCYC Cruise to Marina Jack in Sarasota. Twenty slips are reserved for the event. More details concerning the cruise will be published soon. Kudos to the members and staff of LYC for their good work in hosting this excellent FCYC General meeting! The next General Meeting is scheduled for March at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club. If you are interested in attending, please contact Bob Riggs for more information. February 11 Page 11
