3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS SUSAN MCKINNON January shaped up to be a very busy month. Thank you to all who attended the Change of Watch. We installed returning Board members, as well as welcoming our new Board members, Randy Ray, Neil Thorsen, and local attorney, Jim Reeves. Randy brings a wealth of knowledge in Human Relations; Neil brings many successful years of experience in Risk Management, and Jim in Financial and Membership recruitment. And speaking of new member recruitment, Vice Commodore Bob Dawkins is launching a membership drive beginning in February, lasting 105 days. This is the perfect time to sign a new member. There is a bonus, not only for the prospective member, but the primary sponsor, as well! To reach our membership goal, it will take all of us to recruit. Please refer to Bob s article in this issue of the Jib Sheet for more information. Early in January, we celebrated by recognizing our sailors and cruisers at the annual Yachting Awards. Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make it a huge success!! We entertained over 200 members and guests who danced the night away at the award s conclusion. John Buziak and Joe Lecesse did a superb job with the junior and senior awards for the event, and George Gamble was our Master of Ceremonies. He was also instrumental in organizing the Crew of the Year Awards for each vessel participating in Pensacola Bay PHRF regattas! In the cruiser division Jim Oyler recognized the volunteers who chaired our 2012 raft ups. Special congratulations go to John McGill who was awarded Yachtsman of the Year. We are delighted to recognize John, as well as all the recipients! See our Club awardees, as their photos will soon be displayed in the Grille Room. All in all, it was event to remember! This could not have been accomplished without the sponsorship of George Gamble; my husband, Ian McKinnon; Rick Zern of Zern Rigging; and Hunter Riddle of Schurr Sails. At the winter meeting of the Gulf Yachting Association, Past Commodore Alan McMillan was installed as the chairman of the Offshore Committee. Past Commodore John Matthews will chair the GYA Trophy Committee. Congratulations, Alan and John! It s time to visit the Club and try our new menu!! Chef Artie and his crew are creating culinary delights that are sure to please. The old favorites are there, as well as new favorites! Ian and I couldn t wait to try the homemade potato chips, and were not disappointed. They were delicious, especially with the bleu cheese dressing! If you have not experienced our new menu, there s no time to waste. Come down to the Club, and bring a new member! On a serious note, your Board at its January meeting approved the 2013 budget. While we have provided for our basic operating costs, a single fact remains. The broader our membership base, the more solid we become as a Club. The more we use our Club, sponsor Ballroom events, and bring in new members, the easier it becomes to provide all the services we enjoy. We have a fantastic staff that continuously strives to exceed your expectations. If there is anything the Club can do to enhance your membership, don t hesitate to contact a Board member or me. We are here to serve! Our deepest sympathy goes to Bill Mayo, on the loss of his dear wife, Diana. Diana was an enthusiastic membership booster; I remember, with fondness, her seeking out and welcoming prospective members on Friday nights. She had a special way of making everyone feel special! Diana s exuberance made her a friend to all, and she will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, Diana! February 13 Page 3

4 This month we welcome two Social Members to the Club. Terri Stine works at NAS as a Human Resource Assistant. She has two children. Her thirteen year old son Avery is a sailor and a member of the PYC Junior Yacht Club. Terri also has a twentyfive year old daughter, Audrey. Victoria Patrinely works for Sacred Heart Hospital as a Cardiac Nurse. She is looking forward to relearning how to sail. Victoria has two sons Randall and Jackson twenty and eighteen. Please introduce yourself to these new members when you see them at the Club. In recognition of Susan McKinnon being elected as the first woman Commodore in our Club s 105 year history, the Board has approved a membership drive lasting for 105 days beginning on February 1 and ending on May 16. Our goal is to increase our membership by 10.5%, which will mean recruiting 52 new members. Any new member joining during the membership drive will receive a dining credit for $105 for each of the first three months of their membership, which is an effective rebate of a portion of the entry fee. The primary PYC sponsor will receive a dining Page 4 February 13 VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS FROM REAR COMMODORE Last month I told you that Commodore McKinnon gave me a couple of projects (pool and parking lot) she wanted me to address as Facilities Chair. Well guess what, the list continues to grow. We also have a Ballroom with a leaking roof and a boat ramp that we are monitoring closely. Currently the pool has several large cracks in the bottom and is leaking. We are losing approximately ½ inch per day in addition to the normal evaporation that takes place. The pool is a big draw for the membership during the Spring and Summer months, and also used extensively during the summer sailing camp. The plan we have in place is for Mr. Warrick to discuss this with the Health Dept. and see if we can get through the upcoming season without making the repairs. Ideally we would like to address repairs in our off season. While we are on the topic of the pool, is BOB DAWKINS credit of $105 for one month. The sponsor or sponsors recruiting the most new members during the membership drive will also be recognized at a later date. We will have a Prospective Member Night on Friday, February 15 at 6pm with a special on the menu that night. Please consider bringing friends, neighbors, and coworkers who would enjoy getting to know about becoming a member of PYC. Of course, you can bring a potential member as a guest to the Club at any time to introduce them to the benefits of membership and there is no need to wait for a prospective member program. Please review the membership categories posted on the bulletin board with the entry fee, dues, and assessments (where appropriate) before talking to your friends or colleagues. An application may be picked up at the front desk, or ed to you from the office. After the application is completed with requested signatures, you or the prospective member may submit it to the office with their entry fee plus entry fee tax. This membership drive s success depends on our all efforts. Please consider who you know that might contribute to our PYC community. BEN MYERS there any interest in having a few lane lines painted on the bottom while repairs are being made? My new list includes the Ballroom, which has sprung a number of leaks. Depending on how hard it is raining 12 to 16 places start to drip inside the Ballroom area. Since our Ballroom is a revenue generator it has become our number one priority. We will be getting bids for this project and getting back to you with them. While the parking lot looks to be the least expensive project, it is currently third on our priority list. We are also monitoring the boat ramp closely. John Buziak is heading up this project and looking into contingency plans in case we have a failure with the current ramp. Lastly Dana Jackson, our Landscape Chair, is gearing up for the Spring and making plans for continuing to beautify our grounds. I thank him in advance for his good work.

5 PYC PERMANENT ENDOWMENT FUND BY P/C SAM FOREMAN, CHAIRMAN The Directors of the PYC Permanent Endowment Fund Past Commodore Bill Nobles, Bernie Knight, and I are pleased to report the Endowment Fund grew to a value of $513, the end of The current rules of calculating the net investment income is dividends+interest+realized/unrealized capital gains deposits to issue a check from the Endowment Fund to the Board during the year. PYC then receives 50% of the net investment income. For 2012 the net investment income was $54, The 2013 Board has been presented on PYC s behalf a check for $27, It s a great thing to able to issue that check, but it is feast or famine depending on the performance of the Fund. Commodore McMillan s Board realized a check while Commodore Allen s did not. It plays havoc with the Fund s growth as well. Late last year, my fellow Directors and I presented to the Board a Bylaws change to a more normal definition of income meaning cash dividends and interest. Under our proposal PYC will receive every year a 100% of the cash dividends and interest produced by the Endowment Fund and the Fund will retain all capital gains. PYC will realize income from the Fund every year regardless of market performance. Under this change, the income should grow as the Fund grows in value. The Board approved those changes and it will be presented to the General Membership Meeting on February 21. The Endowment Fund Directors hope you will support this change as well. If you have any questions, don t hesitate to contact one of us. The Membership approved the creation of the Endowment Fund in December 1998 under the Leadership of Commodore Chuck Smith. It was a bold move for our Club to create a Fund that would provide for PYC s future financial needs. The Fund s Directors feel that with the changes we propose, it will do precisely that. 6 FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT BOB SUTTON We have had an amazing start to the New Year with one big event and one big meeting. The event was the Annual Yachting Awards Night. What a great time with over 200 participants in the PYC ballroom having lots of fun and awards for all. Many thanks go out to George Gamble for hosting and sponsoring along with Ian McKinnon, Zern Rigging, and Schurr Sails. I think it was the biggest gathering of Yachtsmen and Yachtswomen to date. My congrats go out to all of the award recipients. I hope this is only the first of many great events on Pensacola Bay this year. The GYA winter meeting was held in Fairhope and was very informative and the annual scheduling went off without a hitch. If you would like to see this year s schedule for the Bay, you will find it in this addition of the Jib Sheet, or go to the PYC web site in the future. If you would like to view the GYA calendar for all racing you can see it on the GYA web site. The next big meeting will be the Coastal Cruising and Raft-up Planning on January 22. They will be getting together to work on a schedule. You will hear more about this in next month s article. The next day is the First Wednesday program, kicking off PYC on the water activities for the year. You will also hear more about that next month. I hope I have a lot to say about this one. The line of communication is still open for any and all suggestions to the upcoming year on the water. I am still looking for Fishing and Kayaking volunteers to come forward. By the time you read this, the Beach will have run their first race of the year and the Super Bowl Regatta will be complete for PYC. For the Month of February we have the Mardi Gras on the 9 th and PBYC has the Valentines on the 16 th for Regattas. Please don t forget the easiest way to get involved is to become a volunteer with race committee. We can always use the help. We will have an Instructor and Counselor training in March for anyone who is interested, so pass the word. I will be passing the word starting today. I want to see every boat owner at the Blessing of the fleet this year. I want to make this the biggest thing on the Bay. I hope to see you on the water, in the water, or around the water. 10 CRUISER S CORNER The 2013 boating season got off to a great start on New Year s Day. Over 40 survivors gathered at the sailing center for the annual New Year s cruising brunch. As always the food was plentiful and delicious. Thank you to those who helped take down the Christmas decorations. Many hands make little work. Within 30 minutes the Sailing Center s decorations were down and packed away waiting for next Christmas. The Raft Up planning meeting was very well attended. Many thanks to all of you who have volunteered to help with or host a raft-up this year. We are looking forward to another exciting raft-up season in Plans are already in the works for weekends at Fort McRae, Robert s Bayou, and Little Sabine, as well as, two Blue Angel weekends. A cruise to Biloxi is being planned for Memorial Day weekend so stay tuned for updates. Johnny and Ruth Smith are hosting the February raft up and are planning a weekend at The Wharf on February 23. This destination is accessible by boat, as well as, auto with condos are available for an overnight stay. Watch your for more information on this weekend as it becomes available. If you are not receiving the raft-up s and would like to be included send us a note to jnlagain@gmail.com See you on the water. FCYC REPORT BOB & VICKI RIGGS The FCYC held its General Meeting at the Smyrna Yacht Club on January Thirty-five of the thirty-seven member Clubs were represented at the meeting. PYC was represented by FCYC Director Bob and Vicki Riggs. A number of items of interest to our cruising community were discussed at the General Meeting: 1. The new sixteenth edition of the FCYC Cruising Guide is now available. We anticipate having this document for sale in our Ship Store shortly. In addition the 2013 FCYC Cruising Log is available on line. For 2012 PYC cruisers Henry and Pauline Pearson and Julie Denton and Ron Bray have submitted Logs, and we are hopeful that they will be among the FCYC cruisers recognized at the March General meeting. 2. Several clubs announced improvements in their transient berthing facilities. Carlouel Yacht Club has completely rebuilt their pier for visiting cruisers with floating docks and new power pedestals. The club can now accommodate up to four yachts with LOA s of 40 feet. 3. Venice Yacht Club has recently opened a new twenty-eight slip addition to their marina. The addition includes a new face dock that will be used to accommodate FCYC visiting vessels. For those of you who have backed your yacht down the long narrow channel previously used to access transient berths, the new arrangement will be welcome news. 4. Marathon Yacht Club has reopened their marina after a complete rework. Although the facility has the same footprint as the previous structure, the new edition has much improved walkways, pilings, and power pedestals. 5. Now the bad news! Sarasota Yacht Club announced that it will begin restricting FCYC transients to only three slips. Since this is one of the most popular FCYC stops on Florida s west coast, reservations are certainly going to be required. The most pertinent business conducted during the Board of Directors meeting was the ratification of the 2013 budget. Due to cost saving initiatives and high sales volume of the Cruising Guides, our PYC dues to FCYC will be reduced by over 10 percent this year. In addition the Board of Directors approved the slate of officers for this Commodore-elect Ray Starsman will be installed at the March general meeting at Ray s home Club the Isles. 12 Where the Burgee Flies Chesapeake Bay.a sailor s delight Joanne, Megan (the reluctant sailing cat), and I have spent three summer/fall seasons exploring and enjoying the Chesapeake Bay. Each year we have left Heather, our 1973 Tartan 34C at Deltaville Boatyard, roughly 75 miles east of Richmond, VA. The Chesapeake Bay is an area familiar to folks who have cruised the east coast waterways. For those of you who have not enjoyed this unique body of water, let yourself be persuaded to head that way when you have the chance. First a few impressive facts; the Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States stretching 195 miles from Norfolk, VA at the southerly end to Harve de Grace, MD in the north. The average depth is 21 feet but there are numerous deeper Doesn t get any better than this troughs, thought to be remnants of the ancient Susquehanna River. An enormous ecosystem, there are 11,684 miles of shoreline when you include the tidal tributaries. Nearly half the water volume comes from the Atlantic Ocean and the rest (fresh water) comes from the enormous 64,000 square mile watershed, covering parts of six states. More than 17 million people live within the boundaries of this watershed. Anchorages abound. If you had 7 10 days you could easily cruise the 140 miles from Norfolk to Annapolis, visit several great places in between and get a good flavor of what the Chesapeake offers. Depending on the route, there are only 1 or possibly 2 days when you would have to cover greater than 40 miles to reach your destination. Deadrise Workboat Deltaville, VA Taking advantage of the tidal current will help the sailors on the longer days. The southern part of the Bay is a wide-open roadstead, with the ships, tugs and traffic you would expect in a busy commercial and naval port that is the Hampton Roads area. A day sail north from Norfolk is the Mobjack Bay area, which encompasses four rivers and some fine gunkholing. Our preference is the East River, anchoring at the mouth of Put-In Creek and a short dinghy ride to the town of Matthews, VA. Departing Mobjack Bay you sail out and around New Point Comfort Light, north toward Wolf Trap Light and up to the entrance of the Piankatank River, leading into Jackson Creek and the village of Deltaville..which Knapps Narrows Bridge Tilgman Island is home to more boats than people and all manner of boating services, Heather s winter home of late. Entering Jackson Creek for the first time will get your attention, a narrow channel and a 90 degree left turn but inside awaits a lovely anchorage in two outstretched arms of the creek, one hosting Fishing Bay Yacht Club and the other Deltaville Boatyard. There are many options for the next day trip; up the Rappahannock River to the colonial tobacco plantation hubs of Irvington or Urbanna, VA, north past Fleets Bay with nice anchorages in creeks to the west and on to Reedville, site of the Menhaden fishery. The most unique trip may be to head north and east to Tangier Island and step back in time. Dock at Parks Log Canoe Racing on Eastern Shore Marina and have Mr. Parks introduce you to Tangier Island history and lifestyle. Where the Burgee Flies (continued on next page) Page 12 February 13 BY JIM & JOANNE MATTHEWS

13 Where the Burgee Flies (continued on previous page) The next major tributary leading north is the Potomac River. If you have additional time, travel up river 90 miles to our nation s capital. The Capital Yacht Club is both convenient, friendly and just a short walk to metro service and the many sites on the Mall. Continuing north on the Bay we pass Patuxent River Naval Air Station and sail into the Patuxent River to the town of Solomon s, a bustling seafront town of marinas, all services, and good anchorages. Don t miss the Mariner s Museum and the opportunity to enjoy some blue crabs. In this part of the Bay, avoiding crab floats is part of the daily navigation plan. The Bay begins to narrow some and this is a good time to cross over to the Choptank River on the Eastern Shore. This will be a longer day, but head to Oxford, MD on the Tred Avon River. After enjoying the small colonial town, head over to San Domingo Creek and sneak into St. Michaels, a short walk from the dinghy landing. This bustling village has yet another informative Maritime Museum as its centerpiece. We will finish our cruise in Annapolis, the capital of Maryland and a city full of colonial history. If your draft is greater than 5 feet, head around the southern tip of Tilghman Island, if less, cut through Knapps Narrows. Pick out Thomas Point Light to the NW, give it room and head into Annapolis Harbor via the Severn River. Relax and enjoy all that it has to offer; moorings, anchorages and marinas abound..it s one of the great sailing and boating cities in the U.S. WHERE THE BURGEE FLIES MAP We want to know where PYC Cruisers are hanging out. Locations will be displayed on a map at PYC. Contact Kim Ray at Kimham1@aol.com or Point No Point Lighthouse St. Mary s Church in Annapolis Waterman tending crab pots PYC BOAT PHOTO HALL OF FAME The protocol for having your boat (power or sail) photo framed and added to the collection is on PYC s website.
