3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Sam Foreman A new year is upon us giving us a chance to not only reflect on the past year, but also look forward, renew, and rededicate ourselves for the coming year. I can t say it too many times, thanks to Commodore Tim and Marguerite Burr, PYC is in great shape for Every year the Club has its special challenges. We had to navigate through a tough economic landscape in 2009 and we will be faced with the same circumstances in It caused us to postpone building a new kitchen. It is still a need that won t go away and becomes more necessary everyday. We still have a set of plans ready to go if we can figure out the funding. SPECIAL EVENTS SCHEDULED IN 2010 PYC s schedule is busy every year with regattas, parties, raftups, member programs, and meetings. Each year has something that makes it unique. This year on January 8 through 10, we will be the host club for the quarterly meeting of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC). Thirty-six clubs, including PYC, make up the membership of FCYC. Then on February 27, our Club will host its first US Sailing Safety at Sea Seminar, which we hope will be an annual event. On May 12 and 13 will be the starting dates for the Regatta al Sol race to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. These events are only a few of the happenings that will make the year 2010 different. PYC IS A GREAT CLUB WITH GREAT MEMBERS Our Club is blessed with great members, staff, Board of Directors and facilities. It is no wonder we attract the attention of racers nationwide wanting to locate their regatta here. We have a group of dedicated members on our Race Committee and they are always happy to share their enthusiasm with those who would like to volunteer. We have a very dedicated group in our Hospitality Committee that make both members and visitors feel at home. We have many dedicated members serving on many important committees who help ensure the success of our Club. With all we have going for us, why not share our enthusiasm for PYC with a friend, family member, or co-worker and invite them to become a member. A vibrant and growing membership will go a long way in steering PYC through the storms, whether they are natural or man made. I am honored to be Commodore of the South s Finest Yacht Club for Anna and I are looking forward to sharing a great year with each of you. Commodore Sam Foreman January 10 Page

4 VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS Alan McMillan 2009 was a challenging economic year, but under the steady leadership of Commodore Burr and the Board, PYC had a very successful year will be no less so! I look forward to being part of the new Board and working with Commodore Foreman and our Flag Officers. VOLUNTEERS WELCOME TO JOIN COMMITTEES Sam leaves the Vice Commodore s role in great shape. I inherit an excellent Facilities Committee of Tim Burr, Jack Grey, Ed Helms, Susan McKinnon, Stephen Solice, Linda Whitman and our General Manager, Stephen Suchy. PYC also has an equally excellent EPA Committee consisting of Tim Burr, John Buziak, Vickie Fletcher, Eleanor Godwin, Charles Harp, Chuck Smith, Richard Snyder, Stephen Solice and again, our General Manager, Stephen Suchy. We ended the year with a flurry of City, State and Federal EPA meetings and will continue to press forward on reclaiming the full use of our property and satisfactorily resolving the EPA/PYC Ditch. Watching progress, over the years, has been like watching the hour hand on a clock. But no matter how frustrating, our club representatives have made progress and we may now see some cautious optimism in the outlook ahead. I do not want to get ahead of myself or put a jinx on the process, but keep your fingers crossed that some consensus among the parties appears possible. In addition to requesting all of these contributing members continue to serve, I am asking for any other members with an interest and background in these committees to contact me. I would be more than happy to include you in either of these committees, if you are interested in serving our club in these important areas. We thank Susan McKinnon for her service as Chair of the Landscape Committee and improving our club grounds. Anna Foreman will lead our Landscape Committee this year. She also would be delighted to hear from interested volunteers to serve on this important committee. Contact her if you are interested in digging in the dirt at PYC. membership report Jere Allen One of the benefits of Membership in PYC that immediately comes to mind is reciprocity with other yacht clubs. Through reciprocity you are able to utilize the facilities of other yacht clubs throughout the United States. PYC belongs to three different yacht club organizations, which offer our members reciprocity. The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC) is comprised of 36 clubs in Florida. They range in location from close to home like Fort Walton Yacht Club and St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club in Panama City to Marathon Yacht Club in the Keys to the Florida Yacht Club in Jacksonville. The PYC office has a guide to the FCYC clubs that will provide assistance to PYC members in visiting other clubs either by land or by sea. When planning a visit to a FCYC club, please make sure that you make reservations ahead of time. By making arrangements in advance you enable the host club to make proper preparations for your visit and avoid any scheduling conflicts. If your plans change, please also make sure that you notify the club accordingly. Two benefits to note are that you may charge on your PYC card and be billed through your PYC statement. If traveling by sea, the first night s dockage is free if slips are available. The Gulf Yachting Association (GYA) is comprised of 33 clubs along the Gulf Coast from Panama City to Houston. Nearby clubs include: Fairhope, Mobile, and Gulfport to name a few. Southern Yacht Club is a great place to stop by for drinks before dining out in New Orleans. The same guidelines apply as with FCYC when visiting. Be aware that some of the GYA clubs are smaller and may only be open on selected days. The PYC office has a GYA directory for your reference. The third organization is one that our membership may not be familiar since we have only been members for a couple of years. This group is the Yachting Club of America and is made up of some 400 yacht clubs across the United States. When PYC joined this organization, we felt that they provided an outstanding benefit to our members who wish to visit other yacht clubs outside the FCYC and GYA. The list of clubs include some names I know you will be familiar - San Diego Yacht Club, St Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, Chicago Yacht Club and Annapolis Yacht Club. A Yachting Club of America Directory is available in the PYC office and available for sale in the Ship s Store. When visiting these clubs, you definitely need to call ahead to see if the club can accommodate your plans. You will need to get a letter of introduction from the PYC office that can be faxed to the club or you may take with you. Also, you will not be able to charge on your PYC card. We hope you will take advantage of this great club benefit in your travels. I can tell you that there are a lot of our fellow yachters who visit PYC under these organizations. I have found them to be warm and interesting folks as I listen to their stories of where they have been and where they are going. I am sure they will return the PYC hospitality when you visit their clubs. Page January 10

5 HOSPITALITY Gwen Herrin & Jean Fleege Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful holiday enjoying the Club with your friends at the many parties and events on and off the water in December. At the annual Egg Nog Party Don Rock on the piano and the PYC Children s Chorus were a big hit leading us all in a good old fashion sing along. Thanks for putting us all in the spirit of the season! The Christmas Boat parade was a magical sight of powerboats and sailboats lighting up the night. A picture of the floating parade taken by Kim Kimenski even made the Channel 3 news! Of course our annual seasonal celebrations the Commodore s Ball, Children s Christmas Party, and New Year s Eve Party were rocking. If you missed it, you missed a P-A-R-T-Y! We look forward to the new year of fun on and off the Bay. The Ladies Fashion Show luncheons have been scheduled in April for our Spring Show and October for our Fall Show. As always there will be lots of door prizes, shopping, and wonderful fashions. Game day is still on this year s calendar on the last Tuesday of the month. Get a table together and spend the day playing cards or your favorite board game with friends. MEMBER NEWS: Congratulations to PYC members Bob and Patricia Bowman who celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on December 28, The Bowman s enjoyed a Champagne Brunch at PYC with family to commemorate the occasion. Bob and Patricia shared their memories of Patricia s High School Prom held at the PYC in The magical evening began when they arrived in a chauffeur driven limousine owned by Bob s uncle. Past Commodore John Matthews recently celebrated his 70th birthday in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. He and Nancy enjoyed a fun week with family on this lovely island off Cancun. In May many Sailboat racers from the Gulf Coast will participate in the Regatta Al Sol off shore race that starts on Pensacola Bay and finishes on this very same island. In December Past Commodore Roger Moraski and his wife, Betsy joined the cruising Past Commodore Larry Bowyer and his wife Ann-Marie in the BVI to celebrate their mutual wedding anniversaries. PYC HOSTS FCYC GENERAL MEETING JAN 8-10 By Tony Cole, Chair PYC Steering Committee The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC) includes 36 clubs all over Florida, and supports safe boating, access to Florida waterways, monitors and influences Federal and State legislation, works closely with the US Coast Guard and is a valuable resource to all boating interests in Florida. It offers full reciprocity to member clubs. Pensacola Yacht Club has been a member of the Council since FCYC will hold a General Meeting at PYC during the weekend of January 8-10, This will be PYC s second time for hosting an FCYC General Meeting; the first was in January, 2005, in the wake of Ivan. This time we are expecting up to 150 guests from out of town. The weekend will kick off Friday night with a Carnival Dinner at 6 PM with a steel drum band. Dress will be our normal Friday evening casual. The cost for this event will be $21 per person. This should really liven-up our Friday night get-together. PYC members are welcome and encouraged to take part. Please make reservations for the Carnival Dinner. Saturday morning we will take our visitors to the Museum of Naval Aviation at NASP for a special tour. In the afternoon, the delegates will hold a series of business meetings which are open to all members of FCYC clubs. The festivities really get rolling Saturday evening with our formal banquet featuring a Seafood Market theme. After a very short meeting, there will be lots of dancing and mingling. Dress code for this event is Yacht Club Formal/Service Dress for gentlemen, which includes blue blazer, white shirt, club tie, white shoes, white belt, etc. The cost will be $40 per person. If you would like to assist in greeting the visitors as they arrive Friday afternoon, January 8, please call Peg Watson at January 10 Page

6 fleet captain s report The PYC 2009 Sailors Awards held in December was an outstanding success! A record-breaking crowd of over two hundred sailors and guests attended the event to pick up trophies and support the racers. During this past year, winners of Club sponsored regattas were only awarded brag flags for placing in club races. At this event, the competitors received their engraved trophies. In addition to the trophies, awards were presented to very deserving Junior and Senior PYC sailors. The Sailor s Awards photos are in the Jib Sheet. Congratulations to all the winners! As we look to 2010, it promises to be a year filled with exciting racing opportunities. In addition to our regularly scheduled bay regattas, we look forward to hosting the East Coast Flying Tiger Championships, Opti s Gulf Coast Championships, well as Jr. Olympic Festival, US Sailing s Single Handed Championships, Regatta Al Sol, GYA Challenge Cup, and WFORC. You will find a tentative Regatta Schedule published in this month s Jib Sheet that will be confirmed following the January GYA meeting. Your Cruising Chairpersons for 2010 are Steve and Lesa Stack and Bob and Carla Kriegel. They have the cruising dates set and are planning lots of exciting events in the year ahead. Mark your calendars and plan to attend the US Sailing Safety at Sea Seminar, February 27, This certified safety program is recommended for anyone who ventures offshore. This course is designed by experts and will provide information and skills required for sailing offshore, boat preparation, handling heavy weather, recommended safety equipment, and emergencies. 7 junior sailing report Stephen Wagner Wow! What a great year of sailing we had under the watch of Commodore Burr, Flag Officers, Board, and staff at the Pensacola Yacht Club during It was a record-breaking year in yacht racing and one design regattas. Thanks to all who put in so much time serving on the PYC Race Committee and volunteers who supported the many Club sponsored events. Sailors who raced in PYC regattas from all over the world look forward to campaigning and racing in future regattas to be held at PYC. The PYC Junior Race Team took our yacht club to the pinnacle in the Junior Lipton s Regatta. This competition is the most challenging of inner club racing in the GYA. The Junior Lipton Team not only won, but they also in two of the three races won with over a three-minute lead from the next Flying Scot boats to cross the finish line. PYC s Junior Laser Team is ranked in the top three positions in the Laser radial fleet. PYC Commodores escorting Santa to the Club. JUNIOR SAILING CLINICS Sailing clinics are scheduled on Sunday afternoons from 1PM-4PM for all one-design boats. Just or call me to reserve a boat. The clinics are for our Junior Sailors, but adults are welcome to come out and sail a Flying Scot on the Bay while the coaches are on the water. RACE COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Santa handing out gifts. We are in need and recruiting a PYC Race Committee for our 2010 PYC hosted regattas. 10 CRUISER S CORNER Jim & Linda Oyler The November raft-up attendance at Fort McRae was a record breaker. We had two dozen PYC boats in the anchorage and over 60 people on the beach for dinner. It was great to see several new members, as well as some long time members enjoying their first raftup. We think four-week old McKenna Harrell broke the record for the youngest raftee ever. Everyone enjoyed the perfect weather that we ve been missing all year. The sun was shining brightly without a cloud in the sky. The temperature was in the mid-70s, making it a perfect day for an air show. All the flight teams were amazing and the Blue Angels were awe inspiring. The evening temperature cooled just enough to make a big bon fire on the beach feel really good. Our fire was perfect for roasting hot dogs on genuine birch skewers imported from the north woods of Maine to the deep South especially for PYC. Some boaters learned for the first time that nothing tastes as good as a weenie roasted over an open fire. After we ate our fill of hot dogs and other yummy fare the Girl Scouts amongst us demonstrated the fine art of making S mores. The night air show and fire works capped off a delightful evening of great fun and good food. There were well over 100 boats anchored at Fort McRae for the night. The array of anchor lights after dark made a breath taking display that captured the attention of everyone and the imagination of the romantics. On Sunday morning the weather was even more beautiful with a cloudless sky and temperature reaching 80 degrees by mid-morning. We all enjoyed our usual delicious brunch in short sleeves on the beach. This is our last Jib Sheet article as Cruising Chairman. We want to thank all of you who have helped transporting food, ice chests, tables, etc to cruising destinations and those who worked to make The Wharf raft-up one to remember. Also we thank everyone who participated in PYC raft ups throughout 2009 even though the weather, at times, was questionable. You all made PYC raft-ups one of the really great PYC activities. Steve and Lesa Stack and Bob and Carla Kriegel have agreed to Co-Chair the Cruising Committee for They have some really great ideas and we know they can count on everyone for their help and support. See you at the next raft-up. LANDSCAPING Anna Foreman It s the start of a new year and a new PYC Landscape Committee. We have a few new additions joining our seasoned veterans on the committee. Everyone is ready for another fun time out on the PYC lawn. This year I will have big shoes to fill, because Susan McKinnon did such an excellent job steering last year s Landscape Committee. I will do my best even though I have such small feet, but how can I go wrong with such great people by my side. Our 2010 Landscape Committee includes Lesa Stack, Dave Keleher, Dana Jackson, Libba Dennis, Randy Hobgood, Dave Hoffman, and of course, Mr. Suchy and the PYC staff. If you have an interest in working on the Landscape Committee, let me know. The Committee will use January to plan for the coming year, so we will be ready to break out their tools in February. A PYC work day will be scheduled after Valentine s Day to prune the roses, crape myrtles, and pull weeds (if any), have some fun, and shoot the breeze with the Landscaping Committee group, because as we all know, gardeners know the best dirt. Watch for the work date in February s Jib sheet. Look forward to seeing you at the Club. Page 10 January 10
