3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS SUSAN MCKINNON June was a busy month! It s hard to believe the year is halfway over. Sailing was the order of the day for the month filled with on the water activities. Our Summer Sailing Program is in full swing, and the Club continues to be alive with eager youth learning the finer points of sailing and boat handling skills. To showcase these skills, our Junior Sailors and Summer Sailing students will be taking family members for a ride on a small boat of their choice. This family sailing night will occur on the last Thursday of the month. Or, for adults interested in learning to sail, our Summer Instructors are available to teach you. Please contact PYC Sailing Director, Dr. Tina Baker for more information. Congratulations to skippers Neil McMillan (007), Hunter Riddle (Rodent), Paul Gillette (Atlantic Union), and Wes Leytham (Zoom) and their crews for representing PYC in the GYA Challenge Cup in Gulfport in mid June. Nine teams competed on Mississippi Sound over three long days on the water. The culmination was a very respectable fourth place finish for our team. Well done, Challenge Cup Team for proudly representing your Club! Also I would like to thank Fleet Captain, Bob Sutton for running the support boat during the three-day event. Another Sailing Team event is the Junior Lipton Regatta. Our youth will be representing us later in July. A.G. Stitt has been busy organizing our youth in preparation for this prestigious Junior Sailing event. Thank you, A.G, for your leadership role. Your Club supports you and the whole Junior Lipton Team!! Young Adult member, Meghan McMillan, will be offering a new yoga class on Friday mornings. This class will meet weekly from 8:30-9:30 am in the Watson Sailing Center. This is in addition to the Wednesday evening class led by PYC member Carol Payne. For more details, please contact Meghan. The Club is the place to be in July. Please join us in celebrating the birth of our great nation on July Fourth. The kitchen staff will be preparing our favorite barbecue, while outside for the children, we will have the Bounce House. Jeff and Andre Byrd will be playing for our musical entertainment. It promises to be a fun Fourth! Invite your family and friends!! Also, plan to attend the Family Fun Day in August. Like the fun and games on July Fourth, we will gather outside for an enjoyable day of end of summer activities. There s no better place to be! See you around the Club! June 13 Page 3

4 VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS We welcome two new members to the Club this month. John Salvaggio joined as a Social member. A physician at the Medical Center Clinic, he and his wife, Patti have two children Anna age 12, and Daniel age 8. Stephen Jernigan joined as a Regular Active member. He is the CEO and founder of Gulf Medical Services, Inc. Make our new members feel welcome when you see them around the Club by introducing yourself and spending a few minutes getting to know them. There is sometimes confusion about our categories so I want to review them briefly. We have four membership categories including the non-resident membership, open to those living over 100 miles from Pensacola. The minimum age of all membership categories is twenty-one. The basic membership is the Regular Active Membership. This category has full privileges of membership, which includes renting a boat slip in the marina or dry storage, use of club boats, reciprocity with other clubs, and voting. Of course, only voting members may serve on the Board of Directors. Up to 80% of the entry fee may be paid in installments over two years. The Transitional Active Membership is the main feeder membership into Regular Active membership and is open to those under 40 years of age. This category has full privileges other than voting or serving on the Board. The entry fee, based upon age of joining the club, is held in deposit until it matures when the member reaches 40 and transitions automatically to Regular Active membership. Up to 80% of the entry fee, but not less than $500, may be paid in installments over two years. The Social Membership category is attractive to those primarily interested in the social aspects of the club such as dining and bar privileges, the pool and tennis courts, and the parties. The entry fee for Social membership is 20% the entry of Regular Active membership and if a Social member later transfers to the Regular Active membership the difference may be paid in installments. This nonvoting category does not include renting marina or dry storage slips or usage of the club boats. Of course, transient use of the marina and use of the launch ramp are open to Social members as are raft-ups and racing. With this entry fee structure, the out of pocket entry for Regular Active membership and Social membership are the same. A Social member may remain at that level or may make the commitment of Regular Active membership at a later date. The break even cost in the choice between Social membership or Transitional Active membership occurs around 38 years of age. I am always available to discuss the options with any prospective member. See you at the club. Page 4 -XQH BOB DAWKINS

5 HOSPITALITY Bring the entire family to PYC on the 4 th of July for a full day of fun, food, and fireworks in celebration of our nation s freedom! A traditional 4 th of July menu is planned for members and their guests. As a special treat for children a water slide will be set up on the front lawn. When the sun goes down grab a beer or glass of wine and a front row seat on the PYC lawn for the best fireworks display on Pensacola Bay. PYC family fun at it s best! GWEN HERRIN & JEAN FLEEGE Our congratulations to the PYC management and staff for the recent recognition PYC received as the 2013 BEST OF THE BAY for a meeting facility by the PNJ! We all know PYC is the BEST place to be on any given day, but it is nice to know someone else recognizes it too. In addition to business meetings PYC is a great place to plan a wedding, showers, receptions, private parties, banquets, and holiday parties. It is not too early to begin confirming dates for your special event. Contact Scott Segers at events@pyc.gccoxmail.com to set a date today. AN ORDINARY EVENT IS ALWAYS EXTRAORDINARY AT PYC! Coming up in August is the Annual PYC Family Fun Day! Mark your calendars and plan to bring your family to the Club for another great day of fun in the sun and great food. As always there will be water toys on the lawn, games for all to enjoy or just simply stay cool and relaxed at the pool with your family and friends. The annual Commodore s Regatta is scheduled on that day too. It will be fun to watch from the shore as our Past Commodores race in the little boats. There is always a little drama on the water. CHANNEL MARKERS Dave Hoffman traded sailing in the Mediterranean this year for bicycling in the south of France. Most days we are riding through vineyards and lunching in scenic villages, but one day involved riding up mountain switchbacks to the medieval village of Les Baux. However, the rewards of surviving was a week in Paris followed by a week in Amsterdam and sampling some very fine bubbly in the champagne area of France. It has taken Larry and Ann-Marie Bowyer 5 years to get three quarters of the way around the Caribbean in their S/V Loafer s Glory II. They are still enjoying their adventures, even though Ann-Marie committed to only 2 years. Stay tuned for an update. June 13 Page 5

6 The Cancer Regatta started off last month with hard racing on the Bay. The results of the race are recorded at the bottom of my article. I want to congratulate the Crew of Finesse and Skipper Alan McMillan who were first in fleet and the winner of the Amanda Werner Cancer Trophy. Thank you all for participating in this event. We helped the cure for Cancer by raising around $ The PYC Summer Sailing camp is off to a great start this year. Everyone from the young sailors in the program to the staff loves our new Sailing Director Tina Baker. Then came the big bragging rights racing event of the year the Challenge Cup. I saw for myself how hard the crews work that represent PYC during this event. This year s event was exceptionally hard with the heat and long days. The first day started for some morning practice at 0900 on the water and didn t end until 1930 off the water with 3 races in to complete the day. All worked hard and it showed. The second day didn t get any easier with better winds but just as hot. By the end of the second race we were throwing water to all the Crews. This day ended a little earlier but still got 3 races in. Putting two hot days together there was not much partying going on. Then came day three, and all were out and ready to race at around 1030, but we sat with no wind until about Only one race to go and the wind took it s time to come up. It was a long three days of racing. We got off the water around 1500 and the awards were at 1700, long days. Then two of our crews climbed back into the boats and started for home. Not in my wildest dreams could I have done that, and I was only on the water for support, not racing. The outcome was not the best we all hoped for, but everyone worked hard and had a great time. In the end Southern won overall, but Hunter Riddle and crew on Rodent took a first overall in C Division, and Paul Gillette and crew on Atlantic Union took a fourth overall in B Division. I want to thank all of the crews for the hard work put in to represent PYC in this year s Challenge Cup, including those already mentioned and Neil McMillan and crew on the Flying Tiger, and Wes Leytham and crew on Zoom. A special thanks to Paul Gillette for taking the time to captain our Challenge Cup Team again this year. I talked about the W.A.V.E. and its importance last month, but now is the time to go to the Wave website and register your boat to take part on August 10 th. We will also be looking for shore volunteers to help out. Page 6 June 13 FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT Cancer Society Results Non-Spin 1. Kanaloa Mike Beard 2. As You Wish Rick Samuels 3. 10 CRUISER S CORNER The June raft up proved to be both fun and exciting for the 18 boats from PYC anchored in Fort McRee. Saturday was absolutely delightful with lots of sun and a comfortable southeasterly breeze. That evening more than 50 people dinghied to the beach for the taco bar provided by the Club. By the time everyone arrived with their dinner contribution, we had an amazing Mexican buffet. No one went away hungry. The first thunderstorm arrived about midnight and they continued to march through for the next 2 days. Several anchor checks were necessary throughout the night, making sleep a difficult goal to achieve. Our boats were anchored in groups of 3 or 4 and every raft had their own adventure. Our raft of four boats had an anchor down from each of the two interior boats. As the day dawned we noted that we had swung 360 degrees and wrapped the two anchors. They were holding very well and the decision was made that after brunch the two outer boats would leave and the inner boats would simply motor 360 and unwrap the fouled anchors. The wind was blowing knots and it was raining so hard that no one ventured away from their own raft for brunch. Everyone in our raft was enjoying a leisurely brunch aboard Miss Jody when the wind abruptly shifted 180 degrees. Suddenly our raft of four became a raft of five and we were lying abeam to the wind, which was now blowing knots. We had sailed over our anchors and the chain was wrapped around our bulb keel. The amazing thing was that the anchors were holding in those conditions. After about three hours of plotting, planning, diving, and a few more glitches we were anchor up and headed for PYC. We received rousing cheers from every boat we passed as we were leaving Fort McRee. Obviously we had been the morning s entertainment. We enjoyed a wet but uneventful motor back to the Club where we found the friendliest bar in town. The next raft up is scheduled for July 13 in Little Sabine. The Blue Angels will not be flying but there is an air show scheduled for that day. We will plan to party with PBYC on Saturday evening with dinner on your own. Our usual Sunday brunch will be on the deck of PBYC. This raft up is accessible by auto or land yacht so come join us by land or water. 11 PYC Seminar Series NEIL THORSEN & RANDY RAY The subject for July s seminar will be Marine Hurricane Preparation. Topics to be addressed include: Surge, wind, waves & rainfall Securing boats at a dock, in a canal, river, creek, or on a trailer Securing davits & lifts Usage of chafing gear, cleats, dock lines & fenders Reducing windage Preventing water damage & theft The seminar will be conducted on the 16 at 6pm in the Ballroom. The guest speaker is Tom Vandiver, who has delivered this presentation at West Marine and other venues such as the U.S. Power Squadrons for the past ten years. While we all hope that we don t need to take actions due to an approaching hurricane, knowing in advance what to do and having a plan in place is prudent. See you there! Questions and suggestions for topics can be directed to either Neil Thorsen at nthorsen@cox.net or Randy Ray at randalray@me.com.
