Nimitz ordered the formation of a flight demonstration team to keep the public interested in Naval Aviation. The Blue Angels performed their first flight demonstration in June 1946 at their then home base, NAS Jacksonville, Florida. During the Korean Conflict, in 1954 the Blues were reassigned to the aircraft carrier USS Princeton as the nucleus of an elite fighter squadron called Satan s Kitten. Following 4 years in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1954 they relocated to our own NAS Pensacola, Florida! We were in heaven! The Blues current aircraft is the sleek McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, the first dual-role fighter/attack aircraft now serving on the nation s front lines of defense. Since 1946, our Blue Angels have flown for more than 260 million spectators! 3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS ALAN McMILLAN Many members have commented on the new view from the Bar/Grill Room and the porch. We have a new beach, and the old 58 year-old ditch is just a memory. We can see the Pensacola Bay Bridge and our kids in their sailing school! On that note, our Summer Sailing Director, Bert Rice Jr. advised that we will put approximately 200 kids through the Summer Sailing Program this year. Great job by Bert and by the Junior Yacht Club, under the leadership of Stuart Smith. We have seen many changes at the Club this year. However, one of the biggest issues is still on the horizon. This is the potential development of the northeast corner of our property. We have focused high visibility on this proposal so that our members can stay informed and give their thoughts and input as we move forward. The RFP (Request for Proposals) has been made public, and developers are to have their proposals in to the Long Range Planning Committee by the end of August. We will be scheduling town hall meetings to share the proposals and get input. As specific times and dates are confirmed we will send all members an informational blast. Feel free to contact members of the Board of Directors or Long Range Planning Committee Chairman, P/C Tim Burr. PYC Bragging Rights! Rachael Gillette of Atlantic Union Wins Women s Trilogy Series L-R: Killian Corbishley, Maggie Mickler, Bridget Helm, Rachaell Gillette, Kelly Ramsey MacLeod, Maile Cornish, Melanie Jacobi, Carla Cooper-Kriegel, and (in back) Isabelle Schneidau We did it! Thank you to the amazing women who crewed on Atlantic Union for the women s trilogy! It s been a long, hot month of racing. Crew work was second to none, each and every race. A long held dream of mine came true today. (Rachael Gillette) PAGE 3 JIB SHEET

VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS The Board approved nine new and renewing members during the month of July. With one new membership application pending, on the board in the lobby, that will make July the third month this year that the number of new members approved have been in the double digits! Please introduce yourself to, and welcome, the following new members for the month of July: Camille Barr; Rick & Robyn Newman; Brian & Julie Robbins; Steve & Catherine Jones; Samuel & Marie Critides; Matthew & Ashley Pate; James & Lindsay Owens; Ben & Anne Riddles; and, George & Kathy Wentworth. This month, with July s new members, we have 108 new or renewing members in the 18-month timeframe since January 31 st of THAT S THE GOOD NEWS! The bad news is that we have had five resignations in the month of July, as well as one deceased member. Dues paying members on December 31 st, 2014 equaled 397. Dues paying members on July 31 st, 2016 equal 453. JIM REEVES This gives us a net gain of 56. This only illustrates that the search for new members is CONSTANT, and the search for methods and ways to improve Pensacola Yacht Club s member value is ONGOING. In this regard, if you have an idea as to how to enhance member value or to improve member services, please share it with Membership Committee Member, Dean Kirschner, or with our Club Manager. As always, we ask our members to report to the Memberhsip Committee, or to the staff, any person who might like to join our Club. Please speak to your family, friends, and business associates about the benefits of joining the South s Finest Yacht Club! A g a I n, C a l l I n g a l l M o t o r c y c l i s t s! Lets get together, PYC, on Wednesday, August 10 th, at 6:00 pm and see if we can get a PYC motorcycle group started! One possibility would be to schedule a monthly ride (get someone to sponsor it), meet and end at the Club (maybe get the Club to extend a Happy Hour or something), and possibly organize a quarterly ride to somewhere (Barbers, Sheaha, Daytona, etc). Show up, and let s make it happen! Let me know if you can make it! Bob Kriegel (bkriegel@panhandle.rr.com) PAGE 4 JIB SHEET This picture of Steve Harp, Scott Harrell, Bob Kriegel, Jim Oyler, and Johnny Smith all PYC members and active sailors was taken after they finished riding their motorcycles in the Ironbutt Saddlesore They left Gulf Breeze at 5:00 am October 19 th, rode nonstop to Lake City, to Tampa, to Everglades City, to Lake Worth, to Orlando and finished in Daytona Beach at 10:00pm for the 2006 Biketoberfest! They topped off the ride with beer and chicken wings that evening. These guys completed the approximately 1050 mile circuit in seventeen hours qualifying for recognition as some of the World s Toughest Riders!

FROM OUR REAR COMMODORE Linda Brent Where has the time gone? We will now be moving forward to identify and to prioritize the order of the other projects that are still to be done. More work to be done The work to get our pool repaired is scheduled for this fall. Those of you who use the pool often have noticed the broken tiles and have asked for them to be replaced. Be assured that, while they are unsightly, they do not have an impact on the pool use. The cost for tile replacement alone was fairly high and the decision was made to get all of the work done at once. So be patient with that process. What s ahead? Other projects under consideration are the repair of the south porch that has some dry rot under the siding. It s been thought that there were only some cosmetic issues to be addressed, but that was not the case. There is asbestos under the siding, and that has to be removed, as well as replacement of the bad wood. The cost for this repair is $17,000-$19,000. While not an emergency at this time, it cannot be ignored long term. We are also looking at new carpet for the ballroom and in the upstairs area, as reported to you previously. We just have to wait for funds to become available. It has also been suggested that an elevator be installed for access to the meeting rooms upstairs. We will be exploring that possibility for the future. We will be reviewing these and other items that need attention later this month. If you have suggestions for improvements to our club please let me hear from you so we can get them on the list. What s been accomplished so far If you have not already observed all of the updates to the Club, take a look around. The member porch was repaired with new decking and steps were added. The ramp was reinforced so it no longer has a bounce. The walkway and steps were updated to create the look of a brick finish. New canvas all around gives the whole clubhouse a fresh appearance. And, all of this looks out onto our newly paved parking lot. Outside the grille, the new decking is beautiful! What a great spot to look out over our beautiful grounds and to observe the continuing updates to our marina. Also, take a look at our Sailing Center, all ready for upcoming events, with new carpet and paint. Dry storage is improved as well as our entrance with a wider drive. And, we are all elated to finally have the ditch filled and our beautiful east beach more accessible to our use. And - let s not forget the new air conditioned upstairs and the new motor for PYC II. From whence does the funding come? Our Capital Improvement Assessment provides much of the funding for these projects, as well as the usual repair budget. As you are aware, the membership voted to take $12,000 of the money slated for the Capital Improvement Fund to help pay for our marina improvements. Due to the increase in our membership this year, we will soon have that paid in full. Congratulations and many thanks go out to our hard working membership committee and to all of our new members for making this possible! Come enjoy! PYC What a great place to be! PAGE 5 JIB SHEET

ENTERTAINMENT Nicole Ferry The Board is really excited that the fence covering the ugly ditch finally is removed! This allowed an unfettered view of the bay and fireworks this Fourth of July! We had a bonfire on our beach and roasted marshmallows. The kids, of course, enjoyed the water slides and popsicles! Looking ahead, mark your calendar for the end-of-summer Family Day, Saturday, August 6th. As always, we are open to suggestions for new events. Enjoy your summer! PYC SEMINAR SERIES Our third Tuesday night monthly seminars are being suspended for the summer months. A notice will be published in the JibSheet as to when they will resume. 7 CRUISER S CORNER Chuck & Peg Minnich (Note: This article was written on-site, during the raft-up. You can almost smell the low-country boil!) What a glorious weekend for a raft up! Eleven boats with parents, grandparents, grandchildren and dogs gathered at Redfish Point for a delicious low country boil prepared by Scott Wally and his able assistant Michele Breidenbaugh. The water was an ideal temperature for swimming, floats, stand-up paddleboards and other water toys being used by all. What a fun evening! After a brief sun shower Sunday morning, we again piled onto the beach for our usual brunch. Joanne Bush and Peg Minnich decided we couldn t waste any leftovers from the low country boil, so Joanne prepared her infamous ApalachIcola Shrimp Salad and Peg made fried potatoes and eggs. Of course, everyone else provided grits, fruit and various other delicious entrees. Plenty of Bloodies and Mimosas were enjoyed by all. The hour was getting later and all the boats were still swinging on anchor, so Scott suggested we scour our pantries for a potluck lunch. It sounds like a plan, so off we go! More food and drink and a great afternoon continues! The sun is dropping lower in the sky and it is time to go home, but five boats have decided it is too beautiful an evening not to stay out another night. We take a vote, and proceed to Ft. McCree for a lovely sunset and evening visiting with great friends. Another great raft up is over, and if you weren t there, we missed you and hope to see you next month. A very special THANK YOU to Scott Wally and Michelle for hosting a great event and, as usual, a special thanks to the Club for the ingredients to make for a great dinner and brunch. 8 Dave and crew member Cali FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT Dave Oerting The 4th of July is always a special time at PYC! We started off the weekend hosting the 2016 Junior Olympic Sailing Festival. Thirty-five sailors exercised their freedom to sail and their independence from land as they took to Pensacola Bay for this national event. Side-by-side, on land and on the water, with the sailors were the brave volunteers of the PYC Regatta Team. Among the bravest was Regatta Chairman, Jim Baus, who led our team of volunteers and staff to another outstanding accomplishment for youth sailing and Pensacola Yacht Club! The level of competition for this regatta was high with sailors from all over taking part. PYC juniors were victorious as seen in their individual results below. The whole Club celebrated with them on the 4 th - and what a great victory party it was! Congratulations to our PYC junior sailors. The Bikini Regatta requires a female to skipper and at least half of the crew to be female. Our PYC teams sailed with all girls crews. Rachael Gillette s Atlantic Union team finished 1 st in Spinnaker Fleet, just ahead of Linda Baker s Wasted Time in 2 nd and Ellen Hunt s Reach Around in 3 rd. In the Non-Spinnaker Fleet, Julie Connerley s White Shell Woman was 1 st, with Belinda Gobeli s Jes-Be-n-Me in 2 nd. Congratulations ladies! The Race for the Roses is the only regatta in the three-race trilogy series for female sailors that requires 100% female crews (no men allowed on the boats). Rachael Gillette s Atlantic Union team, fresh off their victory in the Bikini Regatta, finished 1 st again in Spinnaker Fleet. Ellen Hunt s Reach Around gave AU a run for their roses this time, finishing a close 2 nd, with Kim Kaminski s Helldiver in 3 rd. Baby Charlotte Grace Gifford We wonder what she s dreaming up for the PYC menu! Another Major Accomplishment for Previous PYC Junior Sailor Chase Rees ALL-ACADEMIC SAILING TEAM MEMBER CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (July 26, 2016) The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) has named its All-Academic Sailing Team. 11 JUNIOR SAILING Junior Olympic Chairman Jim Baus & daughter Savannah Stuart Smith Pensacola Yacht Club hosted the 2016 Junior Olympics on July 1-3, On behalf of myself and the PYC Junior Board, our humble thanks to Mr. Jim Baus for chairing this year s Junior Olympics, and to Past Commodore John Matthews for acting as the Junior Olympics POR. We had many volunteers who contributed in so many ways to make this Junior Olympics a success! Although I won t list everyone individually (because I would have to write at least two pages) please know that we truly appreciate everyone s expertise and hard work. Thank you for giving us your weekend and helping to make this event happen and be another PYC Regatta success! Life is like sailing, you can use any wind to go in any direction. The final results for our PYC Juniors were as follows: Opti Red-White-Blue - 2nd Place - Skipper Gil Hackel, 3rd Place - Skipper Addison Jones, 420 w/spinnaker: 1st place - Skipper Savannah Baus, Crew Abby Rice); 2nd Place - Skipper Camille McGriff, Crew unknown; 3rd place - Skipper Jonathan Schrantz and crew Kirby Smith (PCYC/PYC). We also had 7 Optimist Green Fleeters participate -- three of the seven were PYC new junior sailors -- Logan Mastaw, Roger Ostrander, Donovan Kane and Kush Wells. Keep up the good work in learning to sail competitively! Opti Red, White, & Blue 420 with Spinnaker 1 st place Abby Rice & Savannah Baus Junior Olympic Sailors from PYC Two of PYC s finest, Mr. Gil Hackel & Mr. Daniel Salvaggio, traveled to faraway Texas to participate in the 2016 Texas Youth Race Week - six days of racing, hosted by three clubs on the upper Galveston Bay. July 16 and 17 racing was held at Lakewood Yacht Club, July 21 and 22 racing was held at Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, and July 21 and July 22 racing was held at Houston Yacht Club. After beating the heat for those days, Mr. Gill Hackel will stay and compete in the 2016 USODA National Championships, also hosted by the Houston Yacht Club (July 24-31). He will be joined by junior sailor James Simpkins. We wish you both the very best, and we know you will both represent PYC honorably! We are wrapping up our Summer Sailing Camps and, as I have said before, Mr. Bert, you once again hosted a very successful summer sailing program -- Pensacola Yacht Club is fortunate to have Mr. Bert -- someone who parents can trust to leave their kids under his supervision and care! Leaving your child in someone s care, especially when they will be on or in the water most of the day, is quite unnerving, but Mr. Bert and his counselors and volunteers make sure each child safely completes their week and has an awesome time doing it! Campers don t forget -- for those who attended sailing camp and would like to participate in the Lil' Salts Regatta (Saturday, August 6th) please let Mr. Bert know so he can reserve a boat for you. Also, for any campers who participated in Summer Sailing, please join us for an End of Summer pool party that same evening after the regatta. We will have food, fun and games for any camper who wants to join in -- even if you don t want to participate in the boat race! Again, parents please RSVP with Mr. Bert Rice, Sailing Director, so we know how much food to prepare. PAGE 11 JIB SHEET

Mildred Kuhlmann Cascone May 21, August 2, 2016 Millie Cascone, beloved member and grande dame of the Pensacola Yacht Club, went to her eternal home on August 2, We will so miss her frequent attendance at The Club, especially on Friday nights when she often volunteered at the ticket table for our weekly Friday Night Drawing. Millie was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, our dear friend and longtime member, Michael Anthony Cascone. Millie and Mike met while dancing at the Scenic Terrace in They will now resume their dance! Always a dedicated worker, Millie retired from Southern Bell/BellSouth with 33 yrs. of service. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, The Telephone Pioneers and, of course, the Pensacola Yacht Club. Following Mike s death, and much to Club members delight, she continued operating the PYC Ship Store, a pet project started by the couple, for a number of years. Never idle, even while at the Club, Millie was operating the PYC Ship Store, avidly reading or completing her crossword puzzle Millie Cascone leaves behind three daughters, Dianne Seymour (David), Sheila Martin and Jan Weber (Rich) and a son, Ken Michael Cascone; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind an entire Yacht Club family. Millie will be laid to rest beside her husband at Barrancas National Cemetary. Bon Voyage, Millie. On some future date, perhaps we can all join you and Mike for a big, heavenly PYC raft up! PAGE 12 JIB SHEET

Full Service Sail Loft! Excellence in Design, Fabrication and Service! Hunter Riddle Phone: Pardon our Error! Our sincerest apologies to the talented (and lovely) Savannah Baus for our having misspelled her name in the July JibSheet! We know you re Savannah - not Stephanie! We re also glad you re such a good sport in so many ways! TRIVIA ANSWER (Question page 6) The word tarpaulin derives from an old name for British sailors, who were known as Jack Tars. Jack Tars wore a covering made from a type of canvas oilskin popular with sailors who worked on open wet decks. Their purpose was to protect the sailors from the elements. To make the canvas waterproof it was covered with a layer of tar. This protective cover later became known as a tarpaulin or tarp.
