COMMODORE S COMMENTS I have just returned to the Club from the starting line of the Inaugural Pensacola a la Habana Regata. For our Club to be the fi rst to set sail there with large racing and cruising yachts is a proud occasion. The Satori Foundation, with great sponsors like the Andrews Institute and members, Dick and Tom Pace, supplied the majority of funds that allowed this race to occur. Many PYC members are skippers and crew on the 23 racing boats. Another 30 members are fl ying to Havana as part of the shore support team. I am sure we will have many great stories to tell! At the Oct 29 th General Membership Meeting, the Nominating Committee presented the slate of FLAG Officers and Board Directors for There was a nomination from the fl oor of Josh Hackel, MD to oppose the slated nominee Jim Veal for a three-year director position. With no other nominations being offered from the fl oor, the remaining slate was elected. All FLAG Officers and four members of our Board of Directors are returning, giving PYC a very stable leadership team for Our newest Board Director, Talbot Wilson, has been an active member and volunteer at the Club for many years. His contributions as a new director are welcomed. On Wednesday, December 9, 2015, Josh Hackel, MD and Jim Veal will stand for a membership ballot election for the fi nal position of 3-Year Board Director. The entire elected Board thanks the members and the Nominating Committee for the confi dence shown in them. There are challenges remaining from 2015, and we know from experience that the coming year will present additional challenges. Continue to give us your feedback and support. It was reported at the General Membership Meeting that we have been having a good year. We are operating with positive net revenue that is building membership and providing member value. We used the operating Line of Credit only once and repaid that after four days; we redeemed member Bonds per our schedule; we borrowed ALAN McMILLAN no new money; and, we paid our bills and made all long-term debt payments. That is all good news! However, as I communicated with all members on October 28 th and 29 th, the remnants of Hurricane Patricia dealt our club a severe hit, and our marina was badly damaged. Thankfully, the fl eet of boats came through mostly unscratched, but the east seawall was destroyed and the west docks severely compromised. The only positive coming from this storm was the fact that the Long Range Planning Committee had already been formulating a plan to bring our aging marina back to standards for future use. We can look at this setback with all negative reactions, or we can choose to approach it as an opportunity to move forward, accept what will be a big challenge, and determine to move PYC forward. We have faced bigger setbacks in our 100-plus-year history and come out better and stronger. Two committees are already at work. One, chaired by P/C Larry Bowyer, is working with contractors, using the emergency powers in our By-laws to expend funds to protect the assets of the Club. The other, chaired by Director Denis McKinnon, is preparing a fi nancing plan to present to the Board at their November meeting. The membership voted unanimously at the October 29 th meeting to support this plan of action. We will start the rebuild, repairs and restoration of the marina immediately, and we will bring a completed plan, with fi nancing options, to be voted on at a special called membership meeting in December. As always, please give the Board, as well as these chairs and committees, your best input and support the Club with your participation. We are all apprentices in a craft where noone ever becomes a master. Ernest Hemingway PAGE 3 JIB SHEET

VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS September was a fantastic month for membership recruitment at PYC! At our meeting on October 23 rd, the Board approved eight new and/or renewing members. We believe that to be a record-setting number of approvals if not in the entire history of the Club, then at least in recent history! Perhaps, the best news is that, even though we did have resignations this month, we had no resignations due to the death of a member. May this remain the case in the coming months. With the eight approvals, it brought our total new members to 46 for the year through September. That is right on the target set by the Membership Committee! Among these new members is our Jim Reeves second Corporate Member, Summit Bank! Please extend a warm welcome to all of our new members! They are as follows: Robert Madden, Tony Harris, Stephen Hopkins, George Cancro, Josephine Hessert, John Baars Connell, Trice Dukes (Summit Bank), and Matthew Schmidt (Summit Bank). Thank you Committee Members, Board Members, and PYC Members for all that you have done toward achieving our goal of 60 new or renewing members for the year! As always, we ask you, the current members, to report to the Membership Committee, or to the staff, any person who might like to join our Club. Please speak to your family, friends, and business associates about the values and benefi ts of the South s Finest Yacht Club. 5 FROM REAR COMMODORE Exciting times at PYC Facilities challenges. As most of you are aware, the remnants of Hurricane Patricia dealt our marina a heavy blow. You will be hearing continuous updates from our Commodore Alan McMillan, the Board of Directors and the Special Committees that have been appointed to try to take care of this problem. If you attended the General Membership Meeting on October 29 th you were able to see some of what the Long-Range Planning Committee has been working on with regard to the marina. As stated in Commodore McMillan s article, it is fortunate that planning for a new marina was already underway, and a lot of ideas have already been put forth for updating our marina. Past Commodore Larry Linda Brent Bowyer is heading up the Marina Planning Committee. Member input is encouraged to bring forth ideas on how the marina should be replaced and ideas on funding for the project. Our parking lot remains in dismal condition and it is important that we also look for a solution to get this job done, as this project would benefit each and every member of PYC. Even though we have challenges, I am confident that working together we will succeed in overcoming all of them and continue as the South s Finest Yacht Club. Holiday decorating We are closing in on the holiday season when things really get busy around the Club. Decorating PYC for the Christmas season has always been on the Monday after Thanksgiving, and this year is no different. On November 30 th all who want to participate will gather at the Club to put up the decorations that make our house so festive. Everyone will start to gather at the Club, between 5 and 5:30 PM, with tools, ladders and determination to get the job done. With all of the great help and talent available the whole clubhouse is transformed within a very short time! Immediately thereafter, it is time to relax and enjoy potluck. Everyone brings a dish to share and nobody goes away hungry. Since the Club is closed on Mondays, this is also a BYOB affair. For those of you who have participated, we look forward to seeing you again this year and --- if you have never joined in this event, we hope you will join the eager crew that makes our place so beautiful. If you think you won t know what to do, be assured that you ll have plenty of help getting in the spirit of it all. There is something really special planned this year to add to our Christmas décor, and I know you will want to be in on the decorating so you will see it fi rst. Our Commodorable Gloria McMillan is heading up this event and you will get more notice through our blast as time grows nearer. Let s get together so that the South s Finest Yacht Club will also be the South s Best Dressed Yacht Club! PAGE 5 JIB SHEET

Dave and crew member Cali FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT Hook In & Hold On There s a whole lot to hold onto at PYC! What makes the Yacht Club come alive for you? Is it a Tuesday night seminar? Or Wednesday night Yoga? Friday night s raffles? A boot scootin band on the dance floor? A Saturday night crawfish boil on the front lawn and some Cajun music? Or just a lazy day at the swimming pool? There s so much to do and to get into. For me, the yacht club comes alive on a mid-october weekend, just as it was for the WFORC Regatta, with boats and crews all around the Club during the day and then a wedding party on the lawn that evening, plus a prom night dinner in the dining room - and all this mixed right in perfectly with the WFORC trophy presentations and the sailors and their bar talk about that day s racing on the bay. There was a little something for everyone and the club was alive! It s often like that, so come on out and enjoy the South s Finest Yacht Club. Your fellow members and friends are there, and the professional and friendly staff will make you wanna come back for more! PYC team goes to GYA Fish Championship. Thanks to Hunter Riddle, Dean Holcombe, Andrew and Stewart McMillan, Mandy Patti Johnson, and a few others I m no doubt leaving out, your Yacht Club was one of only 6, out of all the yacht clubs in the Gulf Coast Yachting Association, to compete in this GYA Championship! The West Florida Ocean Racing Circuit Regatta (WFORC) was exciting! Many of our PYC boats and crews came out at the top of this highly competitive regatta. All of the results can be found on PYC s racing page on the PYC Web Page. Habana Daydreamin We re there The sea that divides us from Cuba is the same sea that has joined us. Check out all the news from the Havana sailors, online, at the PYC web page or at www. cubarace2015. For tracking their progress, go to Coming to PYC in November: Dave Oerting November 7-8: The Jubilee Regatta returns to PYC. One of our favorite fall regattas features the smaller one-design sailboats for some close competition. Come out to see all the different types of boats in this regatta, including the Viper 640s that were just voted in as the future GYA inter-club competition boat. You may just catch the Blue Angels Show from the PYC deck while you re checking out the regatta! November 7-8 cont d. --- And speaking of the Blue Angels this same weekend also marks the Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show over NAS, and with it, the annual PYC Fort McRee Cruisers Raft-Up. Get on a boat and get to the party! November 14: PYC Club Championship #5. This is the final regatta in the championship series. Which boat and crew will be crowned the 2015 PYC Sailing Champions? November 19th 6 p.m. in the Sailing Center: Collective Planning ( A first!) Come out tonight and share your ideas with PYC, PBYC and NYCP leaders as to what kind of activities you d like to see us bring to Pensacola Bay in 2016 and beyond. Notice: Please sign up for the Race Committee. Our outstanding Race Committee Chairman, Sean Hickey was our leader for an amazing year of sailboat racing of all kinds at PYC. Sean has taken a leave-of-absence from Race Committee but is still involved behind the scenes. Thank you Sean, and congratulations on a very successful year at PYC! As we move forward to complete the year, we have a few more regattas, and we need race committee crews for these remaining events. Our P/C John Matthews has agreed to step in as PRO for the Jubilee Regatta and the PYC Championship #5. Please contact John and let him know if you can help out on the Race Committee for these regattas. You ll enjoy the time on Maxine with our expert PYC Race Committee Crew. HIHO.DO PAGE 6 JIB SHEET

CRUISER S CORNER Saturday, October 3rd, dawned crisp and clear beneath partly cloudy skies. Thirty-two sailboats headed to the 28th annual Lost Bay Regatta, accompanied by the committee boat, race support boats and several spectator boats. It was a spectacular sight. The winds were perfect at and strengthened during the race, resulting in an exciting race with many boats finishing neck-andneck. Chuck & Peg Minnich PYC Raft-Up - Lost Bay Regatta 180 people attended the after party, hosted by Point Yacht Club with a superb fish fry catered by Chad Stapleton. Much dancing and frivolity followed with excellent entertainment provided by the Al & Kathy Duo. Many delicious dishes were prepared and shared the next morning at Sunday Brunch. The Mimosas and Bloody Mary s flowed freely, as PYC hosted the brunch. A great time was had by all, and, I think the weekend can be proclaimed as another resounding success. 10 PYC Chapter of the Florida Commodore s Association Irrigation Project Update P/C Susan McKinnon To date, we continue to anticipate the permit to place a well on the north side of the property. This will facilitate the irrigation needed to reforest. In the event we are unsuccessful with the permitting process, we will continue to explore alternate options. What was originally planned as a six-month campaign ended in one month due to the generosity of PYC members!! The drawing for the fundraiser prize drawing was held at the October General Membership meeting. Congratulations all!! First place winner: (I Pad Mini):... Mr. Con Lancaster Second place winner (PYC dinner):... Mr. Dick Pace True to form Mr. Pace donated his winnings to the Junior Yacht Club for incorporation into their next fundraising raffle. Third place winner (premium bottle of liquor):... Mrs. Nicole Ferry Many thanks to all PYC members for their kindness, generosity, and support of the PYC Irrigation Project. Together, we make PYC the South s Finest Yacht Club!! Reminder PLANNING AHEAD FOR THE HOLIDAYS! Linda Oyler Claus Christmas boating activities! The Progressive Marina Party is scheduled for Saturday, December 12. Host boats will be serving appetizers and will be open for visits starting at 5:00 P.M. Each boat will be assigned a 30-minute visit period, so you do not have to stay on your own boat throughout the party. If your boat is not in the PYC marina, you can still participate. Bring your own boat to the T-dock or check with the dock master for an open slip. After progressing from boat-to-boat, we will progress to the Sailing Center for more dining and dancing. Attendees who do not have a host boat are asked to bring a dish to share in the Sailing Center. Sunday morning we will have our usual raft-up bloodies and mimosas in the Sailing Center. Everyone should bring a brunch dish to share. Remember - boat shoes (white soles) only, if you plan to board the boats. The following Saturday, December 19, is the Lighted Boat Parade. Decorate your boat and follow Maxine around the bay, beginning at 4:30 P.M. We will return to the Sailing Center for hors d oeurves and awards. This parade is open to all area boaters. Encourage your friends from other clubs, or those with no club affiliation, to join the parade in their boats. The more boats, the brighter the parade! A bar and bartender will be available in the Sailing Center for both functions. See you there! PAGE 10 JIB SHEET

DEPARTURE TO CUBA Making history involved a passage of 511 nautical miles between Pensacola Yacht Club and the finish line in Habana, Cuba. The trip was both thrilling and fraught with challenges! But Isn t that what makes the best sailing stories! There are many such stories to tell. In the meantime, check out Scuttlebutt Sailing News ( and read the exciting moment-by-moment account by Talbot Wilson. Congratulations to Belafonte, a Corsair 31R trimaran, and the first overall to cross the finish line at 2:00 AM Wednesday morning. Belafonte was skippered by a very wet owner and crew (Mike Patterson, PeeWee Chason; David Johnson; and, Andrew McMillan, respectively.) FELICITACIONES A TODOS!
