3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS We have started 2015 with good progress on several important fronts. The January financials for the Club were strong, and seven new members joined in January and February. Both are important performance indicators of our Club s health. Every bit as important is the large number of members who have been using the Club during the past two months. Historically, January and February are slower months at PYC, the weather is cold and we are recovering from the holidays. However, this year it s been great to see that our members find the bar and Grille Room a great place for lunch, happy hour and dinner. Our Valentine Day s Dinner and Dance was a sellout! Jim, Scott, Teresa, Andrea, Chef Artie and the entire staff make our Club an inviting place for our members, and it is great to see that we respond by enjoying their hospitality! The February General Membership Meeting was extremely well attended. Over 100 members participated, and both voting issues were well discussed. Voting Issue One: The members overwhelmingly voted to accept two heartfelt gifts from members Tom and Carol Patterson their beautiful Shamrock sailing yacht SATORI, as well as a generous threeyear donation toward her upkeep! The SATORI Foundation, Inc. will be transferred to the PYC, and five newly appointed trustees will now start the work of preparing the Foundation By-Laws and submitting the IRS paperwork in order to obtain 501(c)(3) tax status. The Foundation Trustees are Board Director Denis McKinnon (one-year term), Member George Gamble (two-year term), P/C Tim Burr (three-year term), Member Bruce Partington (four-year term) and myself, Commodore Alan McMillan (five-year term). Starting in 2016, each year, the Board will select a new five-year term trustee. As soon as the IRS status is received, the sailboat, SATORI, will be transferred into the Foundation, and the Patterson s additional three-year annual gift of $25,000, to assist with its maintenance and upkeep, will begin. Voting Issue Two: The repaving of the parking lot also received substantial member feedback. After much debate, it was voted to refer this issue back to the Board for more evaluation. Specifically, the members want the Board to assess the condition and cost of repair to both the docks and the launch ramp. This will be done, and at the May General Membership Meeting, all three of these needed repairs will be resubmitted to the members with recommendations concerning their current structural status; cost to repair; and, recommendations regarding their priority. For me, this was an outstanding membership meeting because, first, so many of you attended, and second, so many of you engaged in the discussion and debate. This level of participation will keep us growing and insure that the members guide our Club. Bernie Knight, Chairman of the PYC Endowment Fund, reported that the fund is approaching $650,000. Five new Endowment Donors pledged $1,000 each at the membership meeting! Again, great generosity by PYC members! Thanks to V/C Jim Reeves; Board Secretary Carlton Proctor; Member John Brannan, MD; Member Joe Williams; and myself. These donors will receive their gold ship s wheel lapel pin at the May meeting. Terrific member generosity! Thanks to each of you! Alan Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. ALAN McMILLAN Explore. Dream. Discover. The Patterson s amazing generosity allows the new SATORI Foundation to begin many fundraising opportunities that will benefit PYC throughout its future. Thank you s do not seem enough to express our gratitude! - Mark Twain PAGE 3 JIB SHEET

4 VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS Thank you, Pensacola Yacht Club Members, for having shared your thoughts and input with me about membership recruitment for the year of 2015! February was the largest membership gain at the Pensacola Yacht Club in the last three years! Granted, while one swallow does not a spring make, this is still a positive sign that people do want to join the Pensacola Yacht Club, and your Membership Committee is working diligently and creatively to offer prospective members flexible financing to make it attractive and easier to become a member, whether active, social, etc. We have had three-straight years of membership decline, and it is your committee s main endeavor to reverse this trend. It is in every present member s best financial interest to increase our membership. In this regard, we need names and numbers of folks you may know as potential new members. We will make a plan with you to pursue these leads in a manner that we hope will bring us an excited, interested, and involved new members. We are setting up a new Member Appreciation Committee, which is to be headed up by a volunteer, to ensure a new member knows that their membership is Jim Reeves appreciated, welcomed and that we are all interested in how we can make their membership at the Pensacola Yacht Club valuable to them personally. What do you know about Mary Soule, Howard Bell, Stephen Simpson, Chris McCullar, Terri Carter, Iva Prosser, and Elaine Carey? Well, they are all new members who have joined since January 1 st, Have you met them? I am offering a $50.00 gift to the first Pensacola Yacht Club member who can assure me that they have met, and talked with, all these new members. I hope that this is enough of a challenge. Our Treasurer has only projected 21 new Pensacola Yacht Club members for Let s prove him to be a less than optimistic numbers man! Sixty new members would produce $136, in additional gross income to Pensacola Yacht Club and would create more value for all members. Finally, the Commodore, the General Manager, and I are reviewing applications that our staff has received for our part-time membership coordinator position more to follow. Thank you again for your support, and please help us build member numbers by telling your family members, friends and business associates about all the great benefits to be had by joining the South s Finest Yacht Club! FLORIDA COMMODORES ASSOCIATION By John Fogg, President, PYC Chapter Organized in December 2008, the Florida Commodores Association (FCA) exists to provide education an exchange of ideas and information, leadership training and to preserve the customs and courtesies of yachting. The PYC Chapter hosted FCA s quarterly meeting the weekend of February Thirtyfive members, from Panama City to Ft. Pierce and Tampa, alternately participated in the Sundowners Ceremony Friday evening, Saturday s meeting and that evening s Valentines Dinner Dance, all while enjoying the hospitality of the South s Finest Yacht Club. Following the business meeting, FCA members were treated to an outstanding program provided by the following three PYC members: Bruce Partington, Past President of Pensacola Junior Yacht Club, Inc., shared an insightful look at Creating a Junior Yacht Club. His talk included lessons learned about what works and what doesn t and especially the importance of reviewing by-laws periodically, as well as and maintaining ongoing communications between interrelated adult and junior yacht clubs and members. Innes Richards, District Director, Rotary Leadership Institute and currently incoming Assistant Governor, Rotary District 6940, provided an interactive discussion on skills used by effective leaders, including the ten commandments of communications, strategy planning, and the SMART definition of goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). Ken Ford, Guest Speaker and Founder/CEO, Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC), presented an exciting slide show demonstrating some examples of IHMC s work, which focuses on reversing the vector from fi tting people to machines, to fi tting technology to people. In other words, human centered computing. Some of their recent projects include sensory substitution, assistive technologies, a lunar electric rover, natural language dialogue systems and research on cyber security. Just as PYC is your yacht club, FCA is your club s statewide organization of past commodores. We believe in the tenets of yachting and the camaraderie it affords. We also give back to the sport of sailing through our support of US SAILING Olympians, Zach Railey, Paige Railey, and Brad Kendell. To learn more about FCA, visit our website at fl commodores.org. 5 FROM REAR COMMODORE The following report is a topic-bytopic update of our facilities projects as of the General Membership Meeting on February 24, Maxine: Maxine is looking better and better, thanks to Board Director Denis McKinnon. Our detailer has finished his work, and Maxine is much cleaner! The mold and mildew have been removed, so she will now pass the smell test. Denis removed the stove and built storage for race committee members, and he installed a new counter top and a single sink. There is still more rotted wood to be replaced, and the carpet has to be installed. Expenditures to date are approximately $2,500. The rear seal on the transmission of one engine was leaking, and it was decided to replace them on both engines for a cost of approximately $800. The upper deck on the fly bridge still needs to be replaced, but this will not be done until regatta season is over. That cost should be about $1,500. Barring any additional mechanical problems, Denis reports that these repairs should put Maxine in fairly good shape for approximately 3-5 years. I invite you to take a look at our old girl and see how a little TLC improved her looks and extended her usefulness. Parking Lot: The general membership met and voted to delay moving forward with the paving of the parking lot until comparisons were made for the cost of other needs, such as the ramp and the dock. This information will be put together and sent to the membership as soon as possible. OOOOOPS!!! Linda Brent Grille Room Lighting: The fixtures are all in and will soon be installed. The evening appearance of the Grille Room will be greatly improved with this new lighting. Ladies Rest Room Member Entrance: Once again our Hospitality Committee has agreed to take on a project to improve the Pensacola Yacht Club. This time they are redecorating the ladies rest room at the member entrance. An overhaul was done in 2004, primarily to keep the floor from collapsing. In 2007, it was redecorated when the rest of the interior of PYC was updated. This update was done with very limited funds and volunteer labor. The furniture was either donated or found around the Club. Wear and tear have taken their toll and it is now shabby, but certainly not chic! This committee will now work to add new counter tops, sinks, lighting and new furniture, etc. It will bring this rest room up to the standards of all the other rest rooms in our facility. I can t wait to see how they will make this area beautiful. Thanks to all of you who are working on this project. You will also note that the roof over this area has been replaced by our own capable Greg and Jason. We could not move forward with this improvement until the leaks were fixed. Decorations: If you are cleaning out, downsizing, moving or just tired of decorative items, ask Scott if he could use them at the Club. It is amazing how a few new items can make tired décor really pop again. Still the finest! PYC is the finest, and we are working hard to keep it that way. Come often and invite your friends to become members! LIC #EC INDUSTRIAL COMMERCIAL RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE Iven Streckel was here Sunday with his family, when Sally accidently spilled champagne down his back. Management gave him an umbrella for his next visit. (850) FAX: (850) P.O. BOX 9625 PENSACOLA, FL WEST HERMAN STREET PENSACOLA, FL MICHAEL McLEMORE PRESIDENT PAGE 5 JIB SHEET

6 FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT Dave Oerting We re sailing into March with a couple of regattas behind us now. Congratulations to Atlantic Union and Finesse on their victories in the Superbowl and Mardi Gras regattas! This series is in memory of long-time PYC Member Maxine Sansom, who served our yacht club for many years and in many different ways. I remember her most in her role in helping with sailing regattas - serving the race committee, handling publicity and doing just about anything else that was needed for smooth sailing at PYC. Current PYC Member, Doug Sansom is Maxine s son, and he and his wife, Kay, carry on the enthusiasm for sailing that Maxine brought to PYC. The Maxine Sampson Regatta Series is made up of three regattas: Maxine #1 hosted by Navy Yacht Club, Maxine #2 hosted by Pensacola Beach Yacht Club, and Maxine #3 hosted by PYC! The series began on February 28 th this year and culminates two weeks later on March 14 th at PYC. Be sure and come out to PYC on the 14 th to catch the sailing spirit of the Maxine Series! The very next weekend, on March 21st, PYC is hosting the Intergalactic Keel Boat Regatta. This regatta is a little different from our normal regattas in that it is open only to boats that are of the same design (One-Design). This will be a highly competitive regatta and a fun one for our sailors. We should have a good crowd bringing boats in on trailers from out of town, along with a few that our local sailors bring out for this regatta. Come by the Club for these regattas to see the boats and mix with the sailors. You may even have an opportunity to get on a race boat or spectator boat to go out on the bay and experience the racing up close and in person! A big word of THANKS to PYC Past Commodore John Matthews for coordinating a US Sailing Race Management Course at PYC last month. Thanks to John, we now have a few more US Sailing Certified Race Officers who may be available to serve as Principal Race Officers for our race committee. It was a good time and an educational experience for all of us in attendance. The spirit of sailing lives at PYC it ll catch you! HI HO, DO ADVANCED RACE MANAGEMENT SEMINAR by Julie Connerly As mentioned in F/C Dave Oerting s article, PYC hosted an Advanced Race Management Seminar February 7-8, coordinated by P/C John Matthews. Sponsored by US SAILING, this two-day course offered certification in race management, as well as an in-depth orientation for sailors wanting to sharpen their knowledge of racing rules. Two well-qualified instructors taught the seminar: Jim Tichnor (of Texas), US Olympic Sailing Executive Committee Member, as well as US SAILING Senior Judge and Race Officer,, and George Hero IV, US SAILING Regional Race Officer from Southern Yacht Club, New Orleans. Fifteen local and out-of-town race committee and fleet captains attended the seminar, including George Nagy of Annapolis, Maryland. PYC participating members included John Buziak, Julie Connerley, Murt Guild, Sean Hickey, John Matthews, and Dave Oerting. PAGE 6 JIB SHEET Instructors Jim Tichenor and George Hero

7 JUNIOR SAILING What makes an area produce a specialty? Venue, gene pool or statistical anomaly? It could be argued that Pensacola Bay produces more rockstar sailors per capita than Annapolis, or say, San Diego. Is it our bay, with nearly open-ocean conditions, but still tame enough to teach young sailors? Is it the gene pool we draw from, that reaches deep into the history of Pensacola w hen square-riggers hauled mahogany up from South America? Maybe there are some things you should not question, but just be grateful for such as Olympic Sunfish sailor, Tom Whitehurst, joining our coaching staff! As we ease into spring, the advanced Opti sailors will already have two clinics on the books preparing for the USODA this summer. The green-fleeters will be cranking up on the first weekend of March under the careful guidance of Eric Amos. The advanced Opti kids will be getting the one-two punch of Bert Rice and Tom Whitehurst. Another sign of spring is the arrival of the new 420s. We just need some high schoolers to fill them! Pensacola isn t the only club adding to their 420 fleets. Between Fairhope and Ft. Walton Yacht Clubs, there are another three new boats. With PYC s existing racing boat, that brings us to the magic number of six, for team racing! Get out your FUTURE COMMODORES? John Buziak rulebooks! Team racing continues to gain momentum on the Gulf Coast. On the fundraising front, the Juniors made some new friends at the West Marine Grand Opening. We have not heard the tally for the night, but we know we have $75 in the bank thanks to Lanier Sailing Center and our own Robin Lucy. Robin won the bid on sailing lessons for four, and she selected the Pensacola Junior Yacht Club as the beneficiary. We also ran into Tom McGiver and made tentative plans to participate in the Spring Marine Flea Market. Be sure to look for that event in April! Junior sailor, Savannah Baus, (flanked by admirers) wins 3rd Place in the February 15th Mardi Gras Regatta. Fleet Captain Dave Oerting watches proudly. 8 CRUISER S CORNER It was a beautiful weekend in the neighborhood! Once everyone got out of their slips and braved the high surf in the Bay, Ft. McRee became a nice respite. Apparently, high winds aren t as inviting to power boaters as they are to sailors, because all weekend the only boats in the anchorage were sailboats (ten in all), and they were all from PYC. Once we became sheltered in the lee of the fort, it became a wonderful two days. Nearly everyone brought firewood, and the fire burned all day. The temperature on Saturday was a bit cool, so the theme of Blankets and Bailey s was well chosen. The Brunswick stew provided by the Club was a hit, and everyone agreed it should become a menu item in the restaurant. The party would have gone on into the night, but --- right at dusk, a small rainstorm appeared out of nowhere, and there was a mass exodus of dinghies scurrying back to their mother ships. Sunday was absolutely beautiful with winds of 5-to-10 knots and a temperature in the low 70 s. It was too hot for a fire, so the leftover firewood was squirreled away for the next time. A park ranger appeared, and several dogs who were playing in the water suddenly vanished. It turned out the ranger was doing research on turtles and beach mice. We assured her the beach mouse stew we had was wonderful. I personally felt it would have been better had the roux included a little manatee fat! The southwest wind provided a great, relaxing sail back. Because everyone seemed to leave at the same time, we made a beautiful sight passing through the land cut and across Pensacola Bay. Of course it became a race, but Chuck & Peg Minnich no one will admit it. Every time my fat Morgan got near another sailboat, a head would lean out from under the dodger and sails would be trimmed. All in all, if the weather forecast kept you from going out, you missed one of the best raft ups. Thanks to award winning Julie and Ron for a great event. And thanks to the Club and all the participants for providing the food, beverages and camaraderie! This aerial photo wasn t taken by a drone. 12 America s Cup Scholar and Gentleman Mr. Edward Marlowe The Pensacola Yacht Club has lost a gentleman and a scholar. On January 30, 2015, Mr. Edward Marlowe, age 94, resident of Twin Oaks, lost his life in a car accident. He died instantly. Immediately thereafter, he took the helm of a mighty sailing vessel in Heaven s America s Cup. To understand Mr. Marlowe best, please peruse the PYC Grille Room wall that is next to the fireplace. This display of 34th America s Cup memorabilia was Ed Marlowe s inspiration, and the photomontage was all from his collection. His story was also featured in the November 2014, JibSheet, entitled The Passion of Edward Marlowe. As a southern female, my interview with Ed Marlowe felt as if I were being immersed in old style chivalry, a charming experience, to say the least! Over and over again, he expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the attention being given to him and to his interest and expertise in the America s Cup, and in the 34 th America s Cup, in particular. Mr. Ed Marlowe was truly, and equally, a gentleman and a scholar. Although Mr. Marlowe had no children of his own, he will be fondly remembered and honored by his remaining relatives and friends. By Marcia Roberts and Scott Segers, Clubhouse Manager, (850) ! In November 2014, when asked, If you were granted a second life, would you like to participate in the America s Cup? 14 Happy 90 th, Tom Pace! On Friday, February 27 th, the Pace family gathered to celebrate a landmark birthday for our own Mr. Tom Pace. Generations gathered for a festive fete in the PYC Ballroom. It is special to see that when a Pace brother has a birthday, generations gather. This a special and close-knit family that shows well-earned reverence and affection to their beloved patriarchs. Nautical Trivia Answer: The term stateroom is often used to describe passenger accommodations on board a cruise liner. The term derives from the days of the paddle-wheel steamboats that plied their trade up and down the rivers of the United States. The better rooms on these steamers were named after states such as Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey hence stateroom!
