Established 1908 JIB SHEET OCTOBER 2011 AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM COMMODORE ALAN C. MCMILLAN The PYC Board of Directors has called a Special General Membership meeting on Thursday, October 6 at 6pm. The purpose of this meeting is to present the Board recommendation for funding the $200, needed to execute the clubhouse structural repairs including the long overdue remodeling of our kitchen and to establish a Capital Reserve Fund. At the August General Membership Meeting, Jere Allen, Vice Commodore and Chair of the Facilities Committee, described the extent of the mandatory clubhouse repairs. He explained that since substantial repairs must be made under the kitchen floor, this would be an ideal time to perform a cost-effective remodeling of the kitchen. Jere also reported those details in the September Jib Sheet. Briefly, in the early months of 2011, it was discovered that several major structures supporting the 103- year-old clubhouse had rotted and were beginning to collapse. The subsequent investigation revealed that extensive structural repairs were necessary. Those repairs would require that our kitchen be shut down for a minimum of four weeks. The Board chose the option of doing temporary repairs in the spring, leaving our kitchen open for regular member dining, club activities and our ballrooms available for all scheduled summer and fall special events. This plan also allowed the Facilities Committee the time to do the necessary planning and due diligence. Planning, designing, engineering, and coordinating with City authorities were completed and discussed in detail at the August General Membership meeting. The meeting concluded with the commitment to finalize the bid process including contractor selection and putting forward a recommendation for funding this project to the membership at a Special General Membership Meeting in October. This $200, project and our current asset to debt ratio are modest. However, it raises the important issue of capital reserves. Our history shows that we annually spend or depreciate $80, for capital improvements. In most years these items include HVAC, roof repairs, dock maintenance or equipment replacement. However in some years we have issues such as hurricanes or major planned building enhancements, such as the addition of Ballroom A, or as proposed a few years ago, a completely new kitchen. But the reality is that we have never put in place a capital reserve fund to handle all but the most extreme matters. We expect normal operations to cover all PYC funding requirements from club operations, debt reduction, and capital expenditures. Consequently, the Board faces unnecessary funding emergencies on an all too frequent basis. Therefore, the Board plans to present a modest Capital Reserve Fund plan for your consideration at the upcoming General Membership Meeting. Lastly, I would like to stress the importance of your participation at this meeting. You have an outstanding elected board and they represent your interests with diligence and integrity. That is not a substitute for your voice at a General Membership Meeting. There is no substitute for a committed membership giving their individual and collective thoughts about important club matters. Regardless of whether you support the Board recommendation, want to modify the recommendation, or propose a completely new approach to solving the problem, I urge you to come and participate in this important meeting on Thursday, October 6 at 6pm.

GLORIA MCMILLAN TRIBUTE TO NAVAL AVIATION LADIES DINNER DANCE RAISES OVER $11,000 FOR PYC The 2011 Ladies Dinner Dance was definitely a success. Over 150 members and guests attended PYC s Tribute to Naval Aviation on Saturday, September 10 th. The evening started off with a presentation in front of our magnificent American flag led by Major Chad Swan, USMC and 4 USMC Lieutenants. Semper Fi!!! It was followed by great food, a lively auction, fabulous music, and dancing. I want to warmly thank the committee members Ann Smithson, Anna Foreman, Betsy Whitehurst, Donna Clark, Jean Fleege, Karen Allen, Kathy Beall, Linda Whitman, Meghan McMillan, Nancy Matthews, Peg Minnich, Rachael Gillette, and Sheila Martin for their time and effort in putting together such a large event. It does indeed take a village. Special thanks to Linda Whitman for her incredibly creative decorating skills, to Jean Fleege for putting together one of the best menus I have ever seen at PYC, and to Karen Allen for organizing and carrying out the Wine and Liquor Raffle. Our signature drink The Aviation was great fun, appetizers and dinner were absolutely delicious (thank you Chef Arte and staff!), but I think the hit of the evening was the live auction emceed by none other than Commodore Alan McMillan. Even though this was his first time as an auctioneer, Alan managed to separate lots of $$$ from members and guests for a variety of boating trips and a reserved parking space. Thank you, Alan. By the way, as this goes to print, all of the events of the evening generated in excess of $11, As always, these funds will be used to enhance our beautiful clubhouse and facilities. A HUGE thank you also goes to Jim Warwick and the entire PYC staff. Couldn t have done it without you! October 11 Page 3

membership report SUSAN MCKINNON If you are not coming down to the Club on Friday nights, you re missing a wonderful opportunity to see old friends and make new ones! Earlier last month, we celebrated our newest members with a Friday evening reception. Three year olds Mason and Riley Newbill charmed everyone they met, as they worked the Grill Room making new friends!! Winning the new member drawing for a bottle of wine was the lucky Bill Robertson. Our next Prospective Member s meeting will take place in the Board Room on October 4 at 7pm. If you have a friend or neighbor interested in membership, I encourage you to join us for a casual evening with complimentary drinks and hors d eourves. Fifteen PYC members have signed up to participate in the Coast Guard Auxiliary s Basic Sailing Course beginning the first Tuesday in October. The class is quickly reaching its capacity of twenty students, so if you are interested in signing up, please contact Randal Ray. The course will be taught in the Watson Center with on the water practice sessions. We are looking for members who would be willing to donate their time by taking students out for a day on the water. If you are willing to volunteer for this valuable service, please contact me. Did you know that we now have two Schwinn bicycles for member and transient guest use? These bicycles are intended to make transportation possible for visiting boaters. The bicycles may be checked out through our dock master at no charge. Please see Greg Spitzer regarding availability. Please join me in welcoming our newest active member, Linda Williams. Linda and her husband, John, are former members of PYC. They enjoy the many social events, and look forward to meeting old friends, and making new ones at the Club. Deborah Manning also joins us as an active member. In the past, Debbie actively raced on J-24 s, and is looking forward to fun times at the Club. Welcome Aboard! ATTENTION CLUB MEMBERS NOMINATIONS ARE OPEN FOR 2012 BOARD AND FLAG OFFICER POSITIONS The PYC Nominating Committee, Past Commodores John Matthews, Roger Moraski and Sam Foreman and Club Members Mary Stitt and Dana Jackson encourage members to consider servicing on the PYC Board of Directors. There will be a signup sheet in the lobby for those interested in interviewing with the Nominating Committee for the various Board positions. The interviews will be held at the Club from 5:30pm through 7pm on each of the following evenings in October 4, 5, 11 and 12. Page 4 October 11

HOSPITALITY Do you have your table reserved for the PYC Ladies Fall Fashion Show on Wednesday, October 19? Linda Merting and her staff at Ladies Quarter in Gulf Breeze have a fabulous line up of the latest fall trends, accessories, and styles to show you. Cutting Loose Hair Salon will be teaming up with Ladies Quarter to style the models hair. And of course, some of our handsome PYC men will escort the models again this year. As always you will be able to shop before and after the show in the Commodore s Room. Oh yes, and there will be lots of great door prizes. So call your girlfriends and reserve a table today for this fun event. Cocktails start at 11am with Luncheon and Fashion Show beginning at 12noon. GWEN HERRIN & JEAN FLEEGE MEMBER NEWS In August Flack and Kathleen Logan hosted the dinner they donated to the 2010 Ladies Dinner Dance Silent Auction. The lucky winners Ron and Pam Mitchell invited Ray and Gail Yarborough and Jay and Maggie Jordan to dine with them. As a special bonus, P/C Sam and Anna Foreman added panache to the evening by donned black trousers, white shirts and bow ties to serve the hors d oeuvres, salads, entree and dessert. Welcome to the world baby girl! Vice Commodore Jere and Karen Allen are delighted to announce the birth of their first granddaughter, Bryn Cameryn Allen. Born on September 1, she is the daughter of their son and daughter-in-law Brent and Amy Allen of Charleston, SC. Dave Hoffman spent a week cruising in Maine and raced the Retired Skippers Race with former PYC member Ken Hollowell. The race began as a bar bet 60 years ago between local lobstermen and has become one of the premier events raced out of Castine Yacht Club. The classic yachts competing were as beautiful as the scenery surrounding the race course. However, the race courses in Maine require dodging lobster pots and searching for marks in the fog. Dave also did some hiking and kayaking while there and met up with Dave and Cindra Anderson who were anchored in Northwest Harbor for a few days. Still enjoying their Mediterranean cruising adventure, Ron and Joanne Bruce are currently anchored off Taormina, Sicily. Taormina is located directly west across the Stretto di Messina from the toe of the Italian boot on the northern end of the east coast of Sicily. The anchorage at Taormina is in a beautiful setting with the new and old city situated on a steep mountain overlooking the sea. No marinas, no town quays, just Mother Nature. They plan to make their way south along the Sicilian coast to Marina Rigusa before returning to Pensacola this month to spend the holidays with family and friends. Several PYC babes LeAnne Pickering, Karen Allen, Betsy Whitehurst, and Tonya Newbill were featured in the most recent issue of BELLA Magazine all decked out in their finest at the Tribute to Naval Aviation Ladies Dinner Dance. 6 fleet captain s report JOHN BUZIAK In Anne Applebaum s essay, Liberty in the Post- Communist World, she called on de Tocqueville to describe the damage Communism did to East European society in the idiom of Tocqueville, they were deprived of associations which Americans of all ages, all conditions, and all dispositions constantly form. Tocqueville believed that this helped Americans ward off dictatorship. Now, if you have been reading this column since the start of the year you will have noticed I bang the corners pretty hard sometimes before I come back to the mark. How do the functions of the Pensacola Yacht Club ward off dictatorship?! Recently a minor conflict came up when the Junior Sailors were preparing to head for the Galloway Regatta in Gulfport. We had the Opti tribe competing for the same assets as the Laser tribe. How would we provide coach boats for the two disparate groups. Now you might think in Solomon like fashion the Fleet Captain would wade in and divide up the resources. Not so. After a brief flurry of s Ben Addison, Kirby Smith and Joe Leccese had arranged who was towing what and which boats would go on each trailer. As Springer found in the late 1800s, the best solutions are the ones the participants arrange for themselves. How did this all work out? Pensacola Junior Sailors populated the upper half of every Laser fleet with Dodge Rees and Brandon Addison finishing 3rd and 4 th in Full Rig Laser with Michael Rice 6 th and Caroline Johnson 8 th in Laser Radial. About the same time Adam Sammis was trying to put together a team for the Lipton Cup. This was a long tortuous process that was finally concluded when Hunter Riddle stepped up and pulled the usual suspects onto the team. But not so fast! Tropical Storm Lee blew up out of the Gulf flooding Ponchatrain Yacht Club and forcing a reschedule of the Liptons to September 17 &18. Demonstrating the deeply ingrained American trait of self organization Adam and Hunter pulled together a new team: Bert and Michael Rice (father and son), Caroline and Dominic Johnson (brother and sister), Dodge Rees (Mom Claire got him to the prom on time that night), Derek and Hunter Riddle (father and son), Drew Werner and Adam Sammis. Wedged in between Tropical Storm Lee and the Liptons we held the annual Stitt-Chappell Regatta. The Race Committee was largely populated by parents, too numerous to name here. Patrolling the course were more parents who were coaching and encouraging the kids, many racing for the first time. If you have not noticed, sailing is a family business. Watch for the re-entry of Bobby Kahn s old boat Sirocco to be on the race course again. Rumor has it the Partingtons and the Rices are working together to get her back on the water. Another sage philosopher from our own club, Past Commodore Dr. Roger Moraski, put it more simply. Referring to the recent effort on the Thistles Regatta he said, When the members do these things themselves, it s more fun. More satisfying too! The year is winding down, but we are far from done. As you read this WFORC is in the very near future, followed by the Schreck and the Jubilee Regattas! There is lots of time for families to get their boats together and get out on the race course and there are lots of spots available on the Race Committee too. 7 full recovery. junior sailing As the Commodore recently informed the membership, PYC s Sailing Director, Stephen Wagner, has unfortunately had to resign because of his medical condition. All Junior Sailors and their families extend our best wishes to him for a On the weekend of August 27 and 28, a group of PYC Juniors traveled to the Birmingham Sailing Club for its annual Rock Paper Scissors Regatta (so named because of the (in)famous Rock- Paper-Scissors Tournament on Saturday evening). Sailing in the Opti Green Fleet were Evan Smith and Avery Stine who placed 8th and 9th, respectively in a fleet of 20. Sailing in the Red, White and Blue Fleets were Dominic Leccese (Blue), Kathryn Messer (White), Kirby Smith, V, (White), and Gorham Partington (White), in an overall fleet of 21 boats. Dominic Leccese was 6th in a very competitive Blue Fleet, and 9th overall. Gorham Partington and Kirby Smith placed 1st and 2nd, respectively in White Fleet (4th and 5th overall), with Kathryn Messer 5th in White Fleet and 18th overall. Special thanks go to Gretchen Messer for obtaining a house on the lake where the entire PYC team stayed. Also, the PYC sailors wore their blue pennies from the Junior Olympic Regatta for team identity and red PYC shirts for the awards. Working together as a team throughout the regatta built some good camaraderie among our sailors. The Stitt-Chappell Junior Club Championship Regatta was held on September 10 in light air, but with 10 sailors competing overall on the same course. We were fortunate to have Mary Stitt present for the regatta and other members of the Stitt Family, including A.G. Stitt, who competed. Seven Optis, one Laser Radial, and two Sunfish competed on the Chappell side of the regatta (Green Fleet/ Summer Sailing). Evan Smith won first place, and Reese Brewer sailing in her first regatta ever finished second. Reese improved markedly over the course of the day, so has certainly earned an atta-girl. In the senior division of the Lee Stitt Regatta (which employed the Portsmouth Rating system), Michael Rice sailing a Laser Radial was first followed by A.G. Stitt in a Sunfish and Matthew Messer in third (in his first time ever sailing a Sunfish). In the Junior division, (Combined Optimist Red, White and Blue Fleets) Gorham Partington finished first followed by Kirby Smith in second place and Dominic Leccese in third. Kirby and Dominic were tied on points, so the tiebreaker under the RRS was employed. Also racing were Kathryn Messer and Avery Stine. This was Avery s first time racing in the Red, White, and Blue Fleets. Finally, at our last Junior Board Meeting, Chris Buechler reported that his daughter, Mallory Buechler, a freshman at the College of Charleston, made the sailing team. She recently sailed in her first collegiate regatta and the College of Charleston team won! Congratulations to Mallory. Please forward any Junior Sailing news to me to include in future columns bruce.partington@gmail.com. BRUCE PARTINGTON October 11 Page 7

CRUISER S CORNER JIM & LINDA OYLER The August raft-up at The Wharf was a huge success! At last count we had 38 boats and over 100 people for the weekend, including several people who chose to arrive by land yacht. The weather was perfect for spending the day in the water park which most of us did. We had no tropical system threatening to spoil our fun or chasing us home as in years past. Muchas gracias to everyone who worked so hard to organize this weekend raft up. Lee Hargrove and Jere Allen did a marvelous job organizing the weekend and Karen Allen with her band of merry fruit slicers treated us to a great breakfast on Saturday morning. The seminars were both interesting and informative. Dr. Roger Moraski presented a much appreciated program on first aid at sea and Robert from West Marine told us all about some nifty electronic gadgets that we all immediately put on our wish list. We began the raft up festivities with a great Saturday evening cocktail party in the Foreman/Whitman condo. Thank you Sam, Anna, and Linda the party was fabulous! Last but not least kudos go to Beverly Morgan and her staff at The Wharf Marina for all their assistance during the weekend. Rumor has it that next year s Wharf raft-up is already in the planning stages. On September 24, we are headed back to Robert s Bayou to celebrate the autumnal equinox. It is actually at 4:04am on September 23, but I don t think anyone will mind if we celebrate a little later. This is one of two times every year when you can easily check the accuracy of your compass. The sun will set at exactly 270 degrees on the fall equinox. The other accuracy check comes on the spring equinox in March. On that day the sun rises at exactly 90 degrees. Boat people check their compasses during the equinox while landlubbers amuse themselves balancing eggs. Pirate s Cove is always a fun place to hang out in the afternoon and the sandy beach and calm water is a great playground for the little ones. We are planning to burn some burgers and chicken breasts in the park at the north end of the bayou Saturday evening. This is another raft-up that is easily accessible by land yacht so bring your own libations and a dish to share and join us for dinner. Brunch Sunday morning will be in the same park. As always, Bloody Marys and Mimosas will be plentiful. Bring a brunch dish and enjoy the morning with some fun people. Page 10 October 11

FCYC REPORT BOB RIGGS The September General Meeting of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs was held at the Coral Reef Yacht Club, Miami. The PYC FCYC Director Bob Riggs and his wife Vicki were among the 31 member Club representatives who attended this meeting. Coral Reef Yacht Club is located on the western shore of Biscayne Bay and in the heart of the exciting Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami. Access to the Club s marina is via the Dinner Key Channel. Depending on seasonal traffic, the facility can accommodate three to six FCYC transient vessels with loa s up to eighty feet. Obviously with the Club s fabulous location transit slip availability is tight, so be sure to telephone Dock Master Tony Walker at (786) well in advance for reservations. John and Mary McGill aboard their trawler Mary-D joined Vicki and I, embarked on Si Como No, for a tremendous week at the Club in April. If your cruising plans draw you to south Florida, Coral Reef Yacht Club is a must stop! Friday evening s activities got underway with cocktails in the Yardarm Bar. A Havana Night dinner buffet followed with an authentic Jamaican steel drum band music rounding out the evening. On Saturday morning spouses and other guests were treated to a cruise from Coral Reef to Fisher Island aboard two luxury motor yachts. Upon arrival participants were provided with a brief history of the Island and the Vanderbilt Mansion. A gourmet luncheon was served in the Mansion s ballroom. While spouses played, FCYC Directors spent Saturday afternoon in formal business sessions. These meetings included reports from FCYC s Flag Officers and standing committees. In addition, VIP Travel gave a presentation concerning FCYC Commodore s Alaskan Cruise planned for August Specific information about this Cruise is available on FCYC s web site. Later in the agenda Henry Chau, Co-Chairman of the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta, gave an account on the organizational and logistical planning needed to host the largest youth regatta in the county. Seven hundred sailors from thirty states and twenty-eight countries are expected to participate! The Volvo Ocean Race will make its only North American stop in Miami in May Wendy Kamilar, Chairman of the Miami Waterfront Advisory Board, spoke about the City s preparation to host this international event. The schedule of events will include the opening of an International Race Village for the public, arts and concerts, exhibitions, entertainment. Visit for up to date information about this world class event. Culminating the day s activities was a delightful dinner with music and dancing in the Club s ballroom. Coral Reef Yacht Club s officers, members and staff received hearty thanks from all attendees for hosting an excellent General Meeting. Bradenton Yacht Club will host FCYC s November General Meeting. Remember all PYC members are invited to attend. For more information, please contact Bob Riggs at (251) October 11 Page 11

Can you guess who? CLUE #2 He s a top-notch sailor as we all know, But at the Blue Angels Raft-up, he made QUITE a show. A favorite Member stepped off the back of his boat, And soon found out that he definitely didn t float. Since he is tall, he sank straight down, But came up quickly and looked all around. He thought NO ONE saw what he had done, So he dried himself off and basked in the sun. More clues are coming, don t miss #3, It s in the this Jib Sheet, written just for you and me. CLUE #3 He sails on a happy boat, He fishes for big game, He used to be a captain, Heads up if you hear his name. October 11 Page 13
