3 COMMODORE S COMMENTS SAM FOREMAN Finally we are beginning to get more hints of fall and cooler temperatures this month. It is a great time of the year to enjoy sitting on the deck of the Yacht Club, talking with friends, and watch the sun go down while sipping an adult beverage. However the real reason this is one of my favorite times of the year is because I met Anna at a Halloween Costume Party in October of Speaking of October, don t forget to make your reservations for the Ladies Dinner Dance and Silent Auction on October 9. Anna and her committee have put in many hours to make this event the best ever. They have worked hard to put a lot of fun in this event to raise money for the Club. All proceeds will go to help enhance the Club. Last month there was a whirlwind of activities, mostly on the water. Over the Labor Day Weekend I cheered for our PYC Lipton sailing team during the Sr. Lipton Regatta at the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club. On opening day there was absolutely no wind so the start of the regatta was delayed to Sunday. Our team finished tenth overall out of twenty participating clubs. Our PYC spectator and support boat proudly flew the PYC burgee as we motored around the course with the large spectator fleet. I wish I could share this experience with more of my fellow Members. It was so much fun being with a bunch from PYC Members making noise for our team. It goes a long way in raising the morale of our sailors as they race hard for our Club. Also last month many of our members raised the Jolly Roger and headed to Pirates Cove over the Labor Day Weekend. Unfortunately I couldn t be in two places at once and missed this grrrrrrreat event. I m told we had twenty-two boats at this rousing successful event. The PYC cruising fleet is growing and enjoying good times on the water. More racing took place at PYC, but this time it was a Junior Sailing Regatta. Some of our youngest and most competitive Juniors showed up to sail in the Junior Sailing Chappell/Stitt Regatta. Many of these young sailors hardly made it past my belt buckle but the smiles and enthusiasm of these young sailors were absolutely infectious. They would still be on the water sailing if it were not for someone wanting to give them an award. And then on Sunday the annual Past Commodores Regatta was held on the Bay. The sitting Commodore sails against several Past Commodores in our one design fleet for a little friendly competition on the water. I must say that I m a fisherman not a sailor and needed some instruction before this event to avoid hurting myself or someone else. Fortunately our Sailing Director Stephen Wagner gave me some lessons a week before the regatta. He was able to show me how get to the marks with only three and one half hours of sailing instruction. I will say that it is a testament to Stephen Wagner s skill as an instructor that he was able to teach a 58 year old hard boiled fisherman how to sail. On race day we squeezed our bodies into Xcites, which are designed for someone half our size and sailed three races. As I entertained no thoughts of winning the Commodores Regatta, I felt just finishing the races would be a moral victory. The first two races were predictable as I was very last. The third race I actually beat someone. It was all a lot of fun and I want to thank Past Commodores Chuck Smith, Ron Bray, Ron Richards, Chip MacMillan, and Tim Burr for their participation. The overall winner was Chip MacMillan (once again), second was Ron Bray, and third was Ron Richards. ATTENTION CLUB MEMBERS NOMINATIONS ARE OPEN FOR 200 Board & FLAG OFFICER POSITIONS The PYC Nominating Committee, Past Commodores Moraski, Matthews, and Burr and Club Members Dana Jackson and Darrell Harrison, encourage Club members to consider service on the Board. If you are interested, you may sign up for an appointment in the lobby of the Club. Interviews with the Nominating Committee for the various positions will be held at the Club from 5:30pm thru 7:00pm on each of the following evenings of October 5, 6,12, or 13. October 10 Page 3

4 VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS The October Jib Sheet must mean that it is fall on the Gulf Coast. However, as I write this month s article, it s still in the mid-90 s. Nevertheless, our schedule of activities is ramping up! We have major racing and cruising activities as well as the Ladies Dinner Dance, Ladies Fashion Show & Luncheon, and some great family friendly events on schedule for this month. An EPA update reveals that we are due to receive their results from the ground water sampling done in mid-august. Once we have those results, we will begin to work with both the EPA and the City of Pensacola to finalize the decision to reroute the storm water runoff ditch to either the east or west on Cypress Street. The City then can start moving towards removing the ditch from our property. As always- --keep your fingers crossed! The Facilities Committee has been asked by the Board to review the House Rules and any thoughts, ideas, and suggestions from the members will be welcomed. Pull out your copy and dust it off, or call the Club and get a copy from the Office. In any case, feel free to contact me with your ideas. Our goal is to complete our review by the end of October and report to the Board for any appropriate action. ALAN MCMILLAN membership report JERE ALLEN Please join me in welcoming the following Old New active members and their families back to PYC Ellen Brown and her husband Donnie, Joe Meeks and his wife Lynda, Michael Johnson and his wife Phyllis, Donald Holland, and new active member Randy Ray. Be sure and give them a warm hello and invite them to get involved in our many activities here at the club. With fall approaching, now is a good time for our membership to reach out to friends and business associates to encourage them to become members of PYC. There is a full schedule of events on the horizon, so bring your friends to the club to participate and enjoy the variety of activities and events PYC offers its members. Remember NEW members joining PYC will receive a $200 credit for food and beverages during the first two months of membership. That is $200 in the first month and $200 in the second month--what A DEAL! This credit will allow new members and their family to dine at least 8-10 times at PYC during the period. Also, PYC s Corporate Membership Plan allows you to reach out to your fellow business associates to encourage them to join the Club. This plan allows the first new member to join for a $1,500 membership fee, the second $1,000, and all others for $500. In order to qualify for this plan, the first three people from the company or firm must join at the same time. This is a great way for your company or firm to recognize individual accomplishments at a low cost in these economic times. Page 4 October 10

5 HOSPITALITY GWEN HERRIN & JEAN FLEEGE Join us at the Club on Wednesday, October 27 to learn style secrets to update your wardrobe from CHICO S at the PYC Ladies Fashion Show Luncheon. Committee Chair, Jean Fleege and her Committee, Ann Pleune and EJ Jackson have worked hard to plan a great event for our Lady members and their guests. Favors will include a discount card toward purchases at Chico s for all who attend this function and a chance to win a great door prize. Shopping will be available during the social hour in the Commodore s Room beginning at 11am and special drink prices will get the party started. The luncheon with Show Stopping Fashions of the Season modeled by PYC members will begin at 12noon. Call our receptionist at the Club today to reserve a table or two and invite your friends to join you for this fashion fun event. The luncheon is $25 per person with all proceeds going to the Renovation of the Kitchen Fund. Oh yes, and there will be some handsome male escorts available to twirl our models and deliver the door prizes to the lucky winners. CONDOLENCES Francois Vallant will be missed by many of us at PYC and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife of 59 years, Susan and his family. He was truly a scholar and a gentleman. After receiving his BA and MA from Columbia University in NYC, he enjoyed the teaching profession in the independent school systems in Connecticut, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Florida as a coach, schoolmaster, and headmaster. Also passionate about sailing and racing, he taught many of us the rules of racing and was an example of gentlemanly conduct on and off the race course. He served as Fleet Captain and Secretary on the PYC Board in the 1980 s. He also served the Gulf Yachting Association in the 1990 s and was the GYA Commodore in Francois Vallant was respected and loved by all who knew him especially those in the sailing community. Commodore Sam Forman commented on the loss of our friend, I m always impressed by great wordsmiths like Winston Churchill who would take the English language beyond the essential communication to great levels of eloquence. Francois Vaillant was that kind of wordsmith and a great storyteller. He could read out loud a computer instruction manual and make high drama out of it. Francois will be greatly missed by all of us. Ladies Dinner Dance & Silent Auction Saturday, October 9 Have you made your reservation for our Ladies Dinner Dance & Silent Auction? It promises to be a grand event with lots of great bargains in the Silent Auction, wonderful food, and a fabulous band. Babysitting will be available at the Sailing Center from 6pm to 10pm for $15.00 per child including dinner and a movie. Some of the items up for bid are a birdhouse replica of PYC, rigging knife with case, ski jacket and ski vest, nautical sweater, a sailcloth ladies handbag, gardening basket including a consultation, Jazz Society basket of goodies, a fishing trip and much, much more. Donations to the Silent Auction will be accepted up to the day of the event. The Wine Basket and Liquor Basket Raffle tickets are now on sale at the Club for $5 a ticket. All proceeds will be used to enhance our Club. The Committee, Anna Foreman, Marguerite Burr, Gloria McMillan, Karen Allen, Ann Smithson, Kathy Beall, Nancy Matthews, Lyn Harrison, Erin Sammis, Lesa Stack, Linda Whitman, and Donna Clark, would like to thank everyone for your gracious donations to the Silent Auction and Wine and Liquor for the Raffle Baskets. 6 fleet captain s report The Sir Thomas Lipton Regatta was held Labor Day weekend at Bay Waveland Yacht Club. Sailing in light to medium air were skippers Eddie Adams, Dodge Rees, Brandon Addison, and Eric Amos. Crewing were Hunter and Derrick Riddle, Drew Werner, and Seth Dobson. With a 5 th, 8 th 12 th, and 16 th, the team finished in tenth place overall. PYC s Capdeville Chairman, Hunter Riddle, served as team captain. Riddle will also be recruiting a team to represent PYC at the GYA Fish Class Championships at Mobile Yacht Club at the end of the month. SUSAN MCKINNON PYC was the place to be on September 19 as past Commodores, and present Commodore Sam Foreman participated in the annual Commodore s Regatta and festivities. It was a wonderful time to salute our former Commodores for their service to the Club. Joining Commodore Foreman and his wife, Anna, were Chuck and Cameron Smith, Ron Bray, Ron and Innes Richards, Charlie and Joanne Brooks, Billy and Joan Daughdrill, Billie Chappell, Mary Stitt, Alan and Elaine Sheppard, Tim and Marguerite Burr, Lynn Lanneau, Laura Lee, Page and Jim Lee, and Chip and Joyce MacMillan. Any time you get a group of Commodores together, there s got to be a regatta, and this day was no exception! Commodores Foreman, Richards, Bray, Smith, Burr, and MacMillan took to the bay in the Xcites for a three race series. Bernie Knight served as PRO, while our Sailing Director, Stephen Wagner operated the mark set boat. Assisting with Race Committee were Vice Commodore Alan McMillan and Betsy Whitehurst. With the fierce competition that would surely ensue, Vice Commodore McMillan served as Chief Judge. Armed with red and green signal flags, McMillan monitored the race course. With his brand of racing rules, unique to this regatta, the Commodores were in for lots of surprises! It was close, but at the end of the day, Commodore Chip MacMillan would win the regatta with five points. In second place was Commodore Ron Bray with seven points, and in third, Commodore Ron Richards with ten points. Fun was had by all, and with our past and present competitive Commodores, I m already looking forward to next year s regatta! In October, PYC will once again host the WFORC. Regatta Chairwoman, Betsy Moraski, has been working diligently organizing this popular three-day racing event. Many PHRF boats from GYA clubs are expected to attend. Also joining the fleet will be the Flying Tiger class. The Flying Tigers have enjoyed past racing experiences at PYC. Many of the competitors travel long distances to get here and will be wintering in our area so they can participate in upcoming regattas. 7 junior sailing report The PYC Summer Sailing Program was a big success again this year as a result we have had great participation during the Wednesday Night Races and our Club Junior Sailing Regattas. We continue to offer FREE coaching and racing opportunities for Junior Sailors during the Wednesday Night Races, on Saturdays and Sunday afternoon clinics from 1-4pm for the Junior Sailors during the school year. On Wednesdays Junior Sailors meet at the Club at 5pm to rig boats and begin racing at 5:30pm. Sunday Sailing Clinics are held by reservation only from 1-4pm due to the traveling schedule of the PYC Junior Sailing Racing Team. For more information on all PYC sailing activities, events, and to become certified to check out a club boat for a regatta or practice contact Stephen Wagner, PYC Sailing Director at (850) ext. #111 or him at sailingdirector@pyc.gccoxmail. com. Also join the PYC Junior Sailing Facebook webpage to keep updated and informed about all the sailing events, coaching opportunities, and sailing clinics scheduled at the Club for Junior Sailors. In September PYC held its very competitive Junior Sailing Regatta events the John Chappell Commodore s Cup and Lee Stitt Memorial Regatta for all our Club Junior Sailors and summer sailors. The Principal Race Officer or PRO, Bert Rice, Sr. ran an outstanding regatta. Junior Sailors competed in Laser Full Rigs for the John Chappell Commodore s Cup and Optimists for the Lee Stitt Memorial Regatta. The wind settled in around 2pm and the fleet sailed a windward leeward course. Savannah Baus, who joined the PYC Junior Sailing Program two years ago and now lives in Puerto Rico, flew in to compete in the Lee Stitt Memorial Regatta. This 9 year old Junior Sailor pulled two bullets (1 st place) and a third place to win the Stitt Regatta. Coming in second place by inches to the finish line was Gorham Partington and Dominic Lecesse took third place. In the John Chappell Commodore s Cup Laser Fleet Dodge Rees placed 1 st, Brandon Addison 2 nd and Joe Hart 3 rd. Mrs. John Chappell and Mrs. Dan Stitt were on hand to present the perpetual trophies to the winning Junior Sailors. Adult sailing lessons are available for PYC members FREE OF CHARGE. Lessons will be scheduled by appointment with the PYC Sailing Director, Stephen Wagner. Pick a day to take your family sailing and I will teach your family how to sail aboard one of PYC s Flying Scot day sailing boats. With fall approaching it is a perfect time to get on the water with your family and learn to sail. Once you know how to sail, you will be able to check out a PYC club boat to enjoy the sport of sailing with friends or your family. STEPHEN WAGNER JUNIOR SAILING NEWS PYC was recognized at the Sr. Lipton Regatta as the only Club fielding an all Junior Sailing Team at this traditionally interclub adult sailing event. The PYC Junior Sailing Program bought a new Club 420 with customized trailer for PYC Junior Sailors to use in upcoming Junior Sailing Regattas. The Club 420 is a double-handed sailboat that is used in team racing at the College level and is nationally recognized as the Junior Sailing double-handed competition boat by US Sailing Association. We are happy to announce that Guest Coaches, Sarah Lihan, Allie Blecher, and Nicole Buechler, will be available during weekends in October, November and the first weekend in December for Junior Sailors wishing to sign up for a clinic in Optimist, 420, or Laser. The cost is $300 per PYC Junior Sailor, $150 for second sibling, and $350 for each Sponsored Junior Sailing guest to participate in all weekend clinics or $100 per weekend for each participating Junior Sailor. Bring your own boat or reserve a boat through the PYC Sailing Director for the clinic. Registration information and forms are available on the PYC website. Contact Suzanne Buechler for more information about these clinics. October 10 Page 7

10 CRUISER S CORNER BOB & CARLA KRIEGEL, STEVE & LESA STACK What an awesome September Raft up! PYC s Pirate fleet came out in force for our first Pirate Fest Raft Up. Twenty-four sail and motor yachts met up on Robert s Bayou in Josephine, AL for an absolutely beautiful weekend. Festivities began Saturday afternoon with pirate games and races. Swabbies Pearson Stack and Mathew McCurdy showed their swash buckling skills as the winning duo in Paddleboard sword fighting. Mike Beard proved to be our fastest Pirate winning the kayak and paddleboard race. Marguerite Burr led her team of Junior Pirates, Claire Harrison, Bianca and Pearson Stack, to victory in an exciting and dangerous game of kayak/paddle board volleyball! Marguerite also took home the MVP prize! Our contest moved from the water to land with our Pirate Punch Contest. Our panel of Judges tasted and deliberated and tasted some more!! BUT finally declared Jim and Linda Oyler s punch the overall winner with a special prize for presentation going to John Bozeman and his lovely pirate mate, Linda. Pirate punch flowed and awards were given for everything from Best Pirate Attire (Jody Horner and Claire Harrison) to Best Pirate Impersonations (Rusty Bond and Tim Burr). We all enjoyed the pulled pork provided by PYC and the delicious side dishes provided by all of our members. Our evening was topped off with an unexpected fireworks display launched right in the middle of the bayou by a group of revelers calling themselves the Blackwater Pirates. It was awesome!! Some of our more party hearty Pirates ventured to Pirate s Cove to listen to the live band. Sunday morning came early and dingies began to jockey for space at the dock and the parking lot started to fill up with cars as members of PYC and The Point Yacht Club began to join us for brunch. Mimosas and Bloody Marys flowed and as always our members provided an incredible brunch buffet. My last count was 87 members, guest and swabbies at brunch! Way to go PYC!!! Thanks for coming out in force and making our first Pirate fest great! A BIG Thanks to everyone who helped pitch in and dingyed over and back, tables, coolers and storage boxes--a great raft up is definitely a group effort! Plan your costume now for our next raft up Halloween Weekend in Little Sabine Bay. As we have done the last few years we will join PBYC for their annual Halloween party and Haunted house. This is ALWAYS a FUN party!!! PBYC is looking for volunteers to help with their haunted house so please contact them if this is your cup of tea! Plan to bring an appetizer and party food to share at Saturday s party and a brunch item for Sunday morning. Hope to see you there! CENTERBOARDS & SWABBIES LYN HARRISON Can you believe it is already October? The calendar at the Club is just packed with fun things for families and adults to do this month! In addition to the Ladies Dinner Dance & Silent Auction, which is sure to be a lovely evening (babysitting is available!), a family friendly MOVIE ON THE LAWN is planned for Saturday evening, October 23. Come to the Club early to take advantage of the 50% off kid s menu prices for children ages 12 and under. The regular menu and bar menu will be available at normal prices for older children and adults. Sunset is at 6:09 pm so by 6:30 it should be dark enough for the movie. We will be showing Summer Rental starring John Candy. There are a couple of profane words in the movie, but I will be standing by to turn down the volume at the right moment! The movie is family friendly, and you can look it up on the internet for details. Then make sure to mark your calendar for our 2nd annual TRUNK N TREAT on Thursday, October 28 starting at 5:30 p.m. Bring your car, SUV, or motorcycle to the PYC Guest Entrance parking lot, decorate the trunk, and hand out candy to all the PYC ghouls and goblins. There will be a Best Costume awarded to one boy and one girl, so don t hold back on dressing up in your best Halloween costume for this fun event! And don t forget, kids under 10 eat from the buffet FREE on this night! Call the Club for your dining reservations, which are required. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Club this month! 12 LANDSCAPING ANNA FOREMAN Fall makes you think of goblins, pumpkins, rich autumn colors, and of course, fall clean up in the garden. Your Landscape Committee had two workdays in September. We trimmed hedges, pulled those dreaded weeds, pulled vines, trimmed around the front entrance including the Holly tree, and generally had a great time. I would like to thank all the Worker Bees: Elaine Clifford, Bonnie Huggins, Dave Keleher, Joe Moore, Dana Jackson, Kathy Beall, and staff members Greg & Jason. Also I would like to especially thank Dana Jackson who trimmed the Date Palm near the boat launch. We discovered it was in bloom! Stroll down to the launch and take a look. If you would like to join the PYC Landscape Committee, our next workday will be Saturday, October 2 beginning at 9am. There has been great progress made on updating our Club outdoor electrical outlets. Electrical plugs have been installed at the Guest entrance and more electrical outlets are in the works behind the four Holly Trees. We thank Michael McLemore for donating his time and supplies for this project and our staff for all their hard work. When this project is completed we will be able to LIGHT UP the Club for Christmas and other events!! Won t that be Fantastic!!!! Speaking of twinkling lights, if anyone has outside lights or Christmas displays that you will not be using this year, please consider letting the Club use them to light up the grounds this year. We will be happy to return them to you after the holidays. However if you have lights or displays you would like to donate to the Club we will gratefully accept them. We have been working on the Club s public address system and have made some terrific progress. Currently we only have some minor technical glitches to overcome and our player piano needs a few more adjustments to make the system work correctly. Once this is all completed we will be able to pipe piano music or CD generated music throughout the Club or in designated areas. Last but not least we want to say thank you to Don and Beverly Rock for their generous donation of a Giant Clam Shell for the Club s garden. They purchased it in Cebu, Republic of the Philippines in It will be installed soon, so take a stroll on the grounds and enjoy the view. Happy Gardening!
