8 FLEET CAPTAIN "Racing News" Lee Borthwick Hello All. Our first race of the year was the Maxine #1, (Commodore s Cup#1), (Bay Championship Race #2), held on February 23 rd, We had a total 9 boats registered to sail in the first race of the Maxine three-race series. Due to weather, (fog and very light winds), we were unable to have two different races (one for CC#1/Bay#2 & one for Maxine #1) and instead sailed only one combined race. A special thanks goes out to Frank Bean for providing our race committee boat Sand Shark. If anyone is interested in helping Frank bring his boat to and from the yacht club, (5 hours each way) please contact Frank Bean at (251) Thanks also goes out to Richard Brent who braved the morning fog with his vessel to be our Judge. Our next race is the Anniversary Regatta/CC #2/Bay Championship #5 and Marina Party on April 13 th, Please register now. We can always use additional people assist with putting on the regattas. If you would like to be trained to help out either on Race Committee or other duties, please let me know. We have been contacted by Grand Lagoon Yacht Club to practice with their club members sailing the Flying Scot. And as of March 10 th, we will be sailing our Flying Scot and practice racing fundamentals. We will start on March 10 th at 13:00. I will need help moving and setting up the boat. If you are interested please contact me. Here's wishing everyone smooth sailing in Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for the Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay and not just in your home club regattas. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue for years to come - there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 8 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 3 offshore races* only in Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship and would need to race in only 2 of the 3 to qualify. There s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc Pensacola Bay Championship Series Jan 26 Frostbite Regatta PBYC (Bay Champ #1) or Feb 9 Valentine Regatta PBYC (Bay Champ #1) Feb 23 Maxine #1/CC#1 NYCP (Bay Champ #2) Mar 9 Maxine #2 /Rites of Spring PBYC (Bay Champ #3) Mar 16 Maxine #3 PYC (Bay Champ #4) Apr 13 CC#2/Anniversary Regatta NYCP (Bay Champ #5) April 27 Cancer Society (Fiesta of Five Flags) Regatta PYC (Bay Champ #6) May 11 *Sea Buoy PBYC (Bay Champ #7) Jun *Gulfport-Pensacola GYC/PYC (Bay Champ #8) Sep 14 CC #3 NYCP (Bay Champ #9) Oct 6 Lost Bay PtYC (Bay Champ #10) Oct *WFORC PYC (Ocean Race) (Bay Champ #11) Nov 2 CC#4/Veterans NYCP (Bay Champ #12) Bay Championship Race # 1?? - Valentine Regatta Pensacola Beach Yacht Club - 8 PHRF boats 2/9/2019 Lee Borthwick 2019 Fleet Captain seadoggone@gmail.com (850) P.S. 17 Please be sure to check the Navy Yacht Club website: for all of the yacht club news such as upcoming meetings, sign-up for activities or sailboat crew, information about the club and notice of races as well as other contact info. Also check out the photos from the Navy Yacht Club activities throughout the year. If you have a picture to submit be sure to let us know. Have you taken any digital photos lately? Maybe you have some photos from a recent trip or photos of the kids or grandkids? Saved any important documents lately, like a 1099R, a birth certificate, or the warrantee for that new TV? Whether you download photos or any other files, you need to be sure you save them to your computer so you can print them, or just view them when you have the time. But, remember, computers do crash, and it may happen to you. When they do crash there goes all those important photos or documents. To ensure you don't lose any valuable files, make sure you back them up regularly to the cloud, or to an external hard drive. A one or a two Terra Byte hard drive can be purchased for fewer than one hundred dollars and set up to automatically back up your files on a regular basis. It is money well spent, especially if it saves those pictures and documents that are so important to you. Navy Yacht Club Pensacola has a long prestigious history: Founded by flight students at NASP in 1931 Navy Cup--Originated in 1962, with the trophy provided by the US Navy. A unique club competition concept that was, by request of the base, part of the th Anniversary Celebration of NASP *The race to Isla Mujeres celebrating over 50 years was only possible because of the collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation Regatta that commemorated the 75th Anniversary of Naval Aviation *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept in female competitive sailing to Pensacola

18 Bay that has been replicated by other local clubs *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots, offering military students the opportunity to compete on the water at a minimal membership cost *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have' given so much for our freedom. The originator of Wounded American Veterans Event, WAVE, is "rolling" around Florida, thanks to adoption by the Florida Commodores Association. This "Day on the Bay" is a labor of love for hosting yacht clubs NYCP supports the Dan Smith Memorial Youth Sailing Scholarship In 2011, Kathy Champagne searched through vintage GOSPORTs, and collaborated with Hill Goodspeed, Naval Aviation Museum Historian, to reveal the following NYCP sailors, who are most likely our founders: *A. Dixon winged in 1931 *William Masland winged in 1931 *H. Starves winged in 1931 *J.H. Smith winged in 1932 We have been entrusted with a rich legacy, for which we should feel honored to protect. 95 th Anniversary of the Inaugural Winter Olympic Games 90 th Anniversary of the Academy Awards 90 th Anniversary of the birth of Wyatt Earp 90 th Anniversary of Popeye, the Sailor man 85 th Anniversary of the death of Marie Curie 85 th Anniversary of dedication of George Washington on Mt. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts Ensign William Tepuni and his crew could not believe their good fortune on March 1, 1942, as they flew over the frigid North Atlantic off Newfoundland. Running on the surface was a German U-boat, which prompted Tepuni to quickly maneuver for an attack, dropping two depth charges from an altitude of just 50 feet as the submarine executed a crash dive in an attempt to escape. It was too late, an oil slick spreading on the surface signaling the sinking of U- 656, the first German U-boat sunk by American forces during World War II. The end of World War II brought the beginning of the Cold War, one of Naval aviation s main weapons being the Midway-class carriers, the largest U.S. Navy flattops afloat at that time. On March 1, 1946, the lead ship of that class set sail from Norfolk, Va., and set a course northward to the Arctic Circle to test her cold weather capabilities and

19 that of her embarked aircraft, the exercise appropriately codenamed Operation Frostbite. Viva Florida Promoting Florida s History and Culture All those who fly hope they never have to use one. Those who have are recognized by membership in the Caterpillar Club, the sole criteria being that one has had his life saved by a parachute. Recognizing the importance of this life-saving equipment, on March 21, 1924, the Navy s Bureau of Aeronautics directed that service parachutes were to be used by all personnel on all flights. They were Ivy Leaguers who had left behind the idyllic college life to prepare for war, forming the First Yale Unit and initiating a flight training program. On March 24, 1917, the 29-unit members enlisted in the Navy, forming the foundation of what would become the Naval Reserve Flying Corps, which provided most of the naval aviators who fought the Great War. Among those enlisting that day were a future Assistant Secretary of War, two who served as Assistant Secretaries of the Navy, and one who eventually held the post of Secretary of Defense. Pensacola Fun Fact! Though the helicopter advanced and achieved widespread operation in Naval aviation after World War II, it is interesting to note that the first Naval helicopters actually flew during that global conflict. Among them was a unique tandem-rotor design, its elongated curved fuselage that turned upward, giving it an appearance that prompted the nickname the Flying Banana. Designated the HRP, the helicopter first flew on March 7, 1945, and was eventually operated by the Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps, the latter using it to develop the tactic of vertical envelopment, the heliborne delivery of Marines that continues to this day. When USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) deployed to the waters off Japan in response to the recent earthquake and tsunami, she continued a tradition of aircraft carriers, some of the most powerful weapons ever created, being used for humanitarian purposes. The first such occasion occurred on March 31, 1931, when USS Lexington (CV 2) steamed from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to the waters off Nicaragua, launching planes to deliver medical personnel and supplies into the earthquake-stricken city of Managua. More Fun Facts! World War I brought tremendous growth for Naval aviation, the 54 aircraft on hand when the U.S. entered the war growing to more than 2,000 flying machines by the time the Armistice was signed. Such was the demand for aircraft that the Navy actually opened its own aircraft plant, appropriately called the Naval Aircraft Factory, in Philadelphia. On March 27, 1918, the first aircraft built by the factory made its maiden flight, the H-16 flying boat then being assigned service overseas. The Naval Aircraft Factory continued building aircraft until The squadron s establishment was reflective of the wideranging battle fronts of World War II. On March 9, 1942, the first transport squadron (VR) in Naval aviation history, appropriately designated VR-1, became operational. It was the first of 13 squadrons of its type to operate as part of the Naval Air Transport Service (NATS) during the war, the men and machines providing the logistical lifeline to forces overseas whether carrying cargo or passengers or evacuating wounded personnel.
