1 Tall Ships Visit Pensacola

2 Events of World War II to be commemorated Over the next four years: 75 th Anniversary of the U.S. Navy Experiences in World War II December 7, th Anniversary of The Attack on Pearl Harbor the Start of WWII Starting with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 2016 through the anniversary of the Japanese surrender onboard USS Missouri on September 2, World War II history has always been of intense interest to both our service and the country at large and for a very good reason said Naval History and Heritage Command Director Sam Cox. It was a worldwide conflict with existential consequences that continue to unfold, and it affected every American. America is a maritime nation whose security is tied to the sea and depends on a capable and credible U.S. Navy. Join us for the NYCP A Bar-B-Que Dinner at the General Membership Meeting On Thursday, May 3, 2018 "Can you name this piece of gear?" Can you? I saw it aboard the Oosterschelde, and had the Captain explain it's use. I knew it was a block of some type but had never seen on quite like this one. Want to know? Ask Richard Smith MAY 2018 Commodore s Comments BILL CLARK From the Helm: By now we all know that the Commodore s Cup #2 was postponed due to inclement weather. The weather turned out to not all that bad due to the front coming in slowed down so that it hit our area later than expected. Having said that, with the weather reports that were available at the time the correct call was made. Even up to the morning of the regatta heavy rains and high winds were predicted. One can t gamble with what was predicted when equipment could be damaged and lives lost or injured. We are looking at the 11 th of August as the makeup date. We are having new members join every month thanks to a number of you. We need to really look at Active Duty and Retired Military due to the new problems with the Base Security. We are not the only ones having problems with gate access. We are working on the problem and hope to come up with a suitable solution. There are plenty of possible members out there with ID cards that don t even know we exist. We bump into them every day and if you mention the NYCP to enough people you will build our membership. It is a numbers game. Our April meeting was a blast. We had plenty of great food and for sure no one went home hungry. If they did it was their own fault. Many thanks to Sandy Pyle for all her work in setting up such a fine meal. I must say I was concerned at first that I was showing up on the wrong night. I usually arrive between 1700 and 1715 (5:00-5:15 pm) and when I arrive there are usually at least six to ten members ahead of me. Well, it was just me and my young bride until after Then the flood gates opened and soon enough there were more than thirty present. What a relief. What we really need right now is to have at least sixty attend. Members seemed to have a great time mingling and fellowshipping one with one another. The 50/50 was won by Gib Ahl, one of our newer members. He made certain everyone looked at their tickets by waiting a while before claiming the prize. Oh, once he received it he donated it back to the club. Thanks Gib. The Navy Cup discussions took up most of the meeting time as it is the most important event we have for the year. Kim reminded us that we need to begin selling ads for the brochure. It is important we do so now as time is passing by. Kim has everything you need to help you out and we need for everyone to at least nail down a few ads. Please call her if you are unsure of what to do. We have names and most of them already have ads to go with them. We just need people to contact our friends and those who have supported us the last several years. I hope some of you were able to get out to sea/see the tall ships that were here in the middle of the month. They are certainly magnificent to see and entertaining to watch reminding

3 us of sailing in years past. Quite a way to cross the mighty seas back then compared to the cruise ships we have today. I don t think anyone was disappointed in watching the ships come in to port and again go back out to sea. We are looking toward the positive side of the NYCP. We are increasing in the number of members. We are having a great deal of fun and enjoyment. We probably are eating too much. We are also looking at a very bright future. Beware, you don t want to be left behind! Although we were out of town, the pictures and publicity seemed to confirm that a good time was had by all. Navy Cup is coming June 9-10 with a Skipper s meeting and kick-off party on Friday night, June 8 th. Talk to Kim Kaminski for details elsewhere in the Foghorn or send her an . As many of you may have heard, the situation at NAS Pensacola regarding base access for those without a DoD ID card has gotten more difficult. The temporary passes granted last fall are no longer going to be renewed. This will require us to revert to the previous regime of meeting all who need access at the Main Gate and providing escort to the Crow s Nest. We have sent a letter to the Base Commander asking for relief but any change could be awhile in coming. Please don t let this setback discourage your participation. Molly, Doug, Iva and others are happy to do the extra work of providing the escort. See elsewhere in the Foghorn for the phone number(s) to call if someone is not there when you arrive at the Main Gate. I hope to see you at the GMM on May 3 rd (1730) and Navy Cup in June. 9 Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for the Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay and not just in your home club regattas. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue for years to come - there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 9 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 4 offshore races* only. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship. There s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc Proposed Pensacola Bay Championship Series Feb 10 Valentine Regatta PBYC (Bay Champ #1) rescheduled February 17 Feb 17 Valentine Regatta PBYC (Bay Champ #1) Mar 3 Maxine #1/CC#1 NYCP (Bay Champ #2) Mar 10 Maxine #2 /Rites of Spring PBYC (Bay Champ #3) Mar 17 Maxine #3 PYC (Bay Champ #4) Apr 14 August 11th CC#2 NYCP (Bay Champ #5) rescheduled to April 28 Cancer Society (Fiesta of Five Flags) Regatta PYC (Bay Champ #6) May 12 Sea Buoy PBYC (Bay Champ #7) Jun Gulf port-pensacola GYC/PYC (Bay Champ #8) Jun 30 Patriot s Regatta PYC (Bay Champ #9) August 11 CC#2 NYCP (Bay Champ #5) Sep 15 CC#3 NYCP (Bay Champ #10) Sep 22 September 15th CC #3 NYCP (Bay Champ #10) date changed to Oct 6 Lost Bay PtYC (Bay Champ #11) Oct WFORC PYC (Bay Champ #12) Women s Regattas 2018 July 21 - Bikini Regatta NYCP July 28 Race for the Roses PBYC Aug 4 Fast Women - PtYC Aug GYA Knost Regatta - PCYC Oct 13 - Pink Ribbon SYC / NOYC / LPWSA US Sailing GYA Regional/District/National/World Events Apr 27-May 4 May 9-10 May May Jun 9-10 Jun Jun Jul Jul Aug Aug Sep 1-3 Oct 4-7 Oct 6-7 Oct Oct Oct Nov Regatta del Sol al Sol Regatta al Sol Melges 24 Gulf Coast Championship GYA Individual Flying Scot Champ Navy Cup Area D Quarter Finals GYA Offshore Challenge Cup Optimist Nationals Jr Lipton Championship Knost Championship Galloway GYA Sunfish/Laser Champ Lipton Challenge Rhodes 19 Nationals GYA Finn Championship KONA Windsurfing N. A unique club competition concept that was, by request of the base, part of the th Anniversary Celebration of NASP *The race to Isla Mujeres celebrating over 50 years was only possible because of the collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation Regatta that commemorated the 75th Anniversary of Naval Aviation *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept in female competitive sailing to Pensacola Bay that has been replicated by other local clubs *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots, offering military students the opportunity to compete on the water at a minimal membership cost *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have' given so much for our freedom. The originator of Wounded American Veterans Event, WAVE, is "rolling" around Florida, thanks to adoption by the Florida Commodores Association. This "Day on the Bay" is a labor of love for hosting yacht clubs NYCP supports the Dan Smith Memorial Youth Sailing Scholarship In 2011, Kathy Champagne searched through vintage GOSPORTs, and collaborated with Hill Goodspeed, Naval Aviation Museum Historian, to reveal the following NYCP sailors, who are most likely our founders: *A. Dixon winged in 1931 *William Masland winged in 1931 *H. Starves winged in 1931 *J.H. Smith winged in 1932 We have been entrusted with a rich legacy, for which we should feel honored to protect celebrates: 400 th Anniversary of Francis Bacon becoming the Lord Chancellor of England 250 th Anniversary of publication of 1 st edition Encyclopedia Britannica 200 th Anniversary of the Institution of Civil Engineers founded in London 200 th Anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley 150 th Anniversary of the Meiji Restoration 100 th Anniversary of the Armistice to End World War I 100 th Anniversary of Woodrow Wilson s Fourteen Points Speech 100 th Anniversary of the Spanish Influenza Outbreak 75 th Anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad 75 th Anniversary of the Warshaw Ghetto Uprising 75 th Anniversary of the Broadway musical Oklahoma 60 th Anniversary of the Greatest Game Ever Played Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants in 1 st NFL League Championship game to go into sudden death overtime 50 th Anniversary of the Assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts One of three flying boats that launched from Naval Air Station Rockaway Beach in Long Island, N.Y., in May 1919 attempting to fly the Atlantic Ocean, the NC-4 experienced engine trouble almost immediately, the press nicknaming her the Lame Duck as the other planes forged ahead on the multileg trip. Ironically, on the longest and most hazardous part of the trip, a lengthy flight between Newfoundland and the Azores Islands, the Lame Duck was the only airplane to make it, the other two forced down at sea in the North Atlantic. On May 27, 1919, the NC-4 landed in the waters of Lisbon Harbor, becoming the first airplane to successfully cross the pond. The ship entered service on May 12, 1938, the war that would define her service having not yet begun. She became known as the Big E, and from 1941 to 1945, she

15 was a symbol of Naval aviation in the Pacific war from her service as the flagship for the legendary Adm. William F. Bull Halsey to her participation in four of the five carrier vs. carrier battles of World War II. Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrestal called USS Enterprise, the one vessel that most nearly symbolizes the history of the Navy in this war. Viva Florida Promoting Florida s History and Culture For the crews of the Navy s Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers, the first months after Pearl Harbor were marked by hit-andrun raids against Japanese shipping and land bases. That changed on May 7-8, 1942, when during the Battle of the Coral Sea, the U.S. Navy and Imperial Japanese Navy engaged in history s first carrier vs. carrier sea battle, the ships of the opposing forces never coming within sight of each other, the blows instead inflicted by aircraft. Though the carrier Lexington (CV 2) was lost, the battle blunted a planned Japanese offensive against Port Moresby in New Guinea. The sights and sounds of jet aircraft flying over the Korean peninsula were not uncommon in 1951, yet when a pair of F9F-2B Panthers of Fighter Squadron (VF) 191 launched from the carrier Princeton (CV 37) on April 2, 1951, they were unusual in the bombs that hung beneath the aircraft. Arriving over their target, a railroad bridge in North Korea, the pilots of the two planes dropped their ordnance, marking the first Navy uses of jet fighters in the bombing role. Clarence King Bronson reported for aviation training at Pensacola Naval Air Station on May 25, 1914, the flying career of the Bushnell, Ill., native and 1910 Naval Academy graduate destined to be short-lived. In the very dangerous business of early aviation, Bronson died while testing the airplane s offensive capability a bomb dropped from his aircraft during a test flight at the Naval Proving Ground at Indian Head, Md., prematurely exploding. Naval Auxiliary Air Station Bronson Field was later named in his honor. Pensacola Fun Fact! The first months of 1942 were not rosy for the Allied powers confronting the Axis on numerous fronts. While the bulk of the U.S. Navy s carrier aviation efforts were in the Pacific, the aircraft carrier Wasp (CV 7) provided direct support to Great Britain in the Mediterranean Sea, on two occasions transporting British fighter planes to the vicinity of Malta and launching them to reinforce the embattled island. The second of these operations occurred on May 9, 1942, prompting British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to send a message to the ship s crew that read, Who said a Wasp couldn t sting twice? More Fun Facts! The airplane s unconventional gull wing design made it instantly recognizable and prompted the nickname U- Bird. On May 29, 1940, the XF4U-1 Corsair, prototype for one of the famous fighters in history, made its maiden flight, later that year becoming the fastest Navy fighter in the air at the time by achieving a top speed of 404 mph. The last Corsair rolled off the assembly line in 1952 in the midst of the Korean War, during which the airplane was on the front lines of Naval aviation just as it was during World War II.
