2 2016 marks 85 Years of Navy Yacht Club HISTORY Established April 12 th, 1931 Navy Yacht Club Pensacola has a long prestigious history: Founded by flight students at NASP in 1931 Navy Cup--Originated in 1962, with the trophy provided by the US Navy. A unique club competition concept that was, by request of the base, part of the th Anniversary Celebration of NASP *The race to Isla Mujeres celebrating over 50 years was only possible because of the collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation Regatta that commemorated the 75th Anniversary of Naval Aviation *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept in female competitive sailing to Pensacola Bay that has been replicated by other local clubs *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots, offering military students the opportunity to compete on the water at a minimal membership cost *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have' given so much for our freedom. The originator of Wounded American Veterans Event, WAVE, is "rolling" around Florida, thanks to adoption by the Florida Commodores Association. This "Day on the Bay" is a labor of love for hosting yacht clubs NYCP supports the Dan Smith Memorial Youth Sailing Scholarship In 2011, Kathy Champagne searched through vintage GOSPORTs, and collaborated with Hill Goodspeed, Naval Aviation Museum Historian, to reveal the following NYCP sailors, who are most likely our founders: *A. Dixon winged in 1931 *William Masland winged in 1931 *H. Starves winged in 1931 *J.H. Smith winged in 1932 We have been entrusted with a rich legacy, for which we should feel honored to protect. SEPTEMBER 2016 Commodore s Comments JOHN MATTHEWS From the Helm: I apologize for being late in getting my article out for September. However, I had total hip replacement surgery on August 11 which limited my activities and when, how and where I could sit. Then Nancy had cardiac surgery on September 1 which was a today event. She is out and about now and feeling much better. She still has a strict regime to follow for several weeks but otherwise she is a happy camper. The NYCP Capdevielle Team competed over Labor Day weekend at Buccaneer Yacht Club in the 96 th GYA Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge. While NYCP did not win, I do believe they had a great time competing in the event. Team Captain Sue Stephenson deserves a BIG THANK YOU from the membership for her efforts in putting the team together and in competing in the event. A special THANKS to the team members Don Robinson, Dick Piatt, Buddy Hamilton, Kim Kaminski, Cody Dale, Fred Locke, Rod West, Marcia Cooper, and John Buziak. I just want to underscore the success that can be achieved by a dedicated, all volunteer yacht club such as Buccaneer Yacht Club. This club has no paid staff and operates the club with its dedicated and committed members. The Buccaneer Yacht Club has a total of 150 members and with this group, they were successfully able to host the Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge and the GYA Semiannual Membership Meeting over the Labor Day Weekend. They own their own facility and property and also hosts many other GYA sanctioned events and local races. NYCP can accomplish this kind of operation but it takes the membership s commitment and dedication and resources to getting the job done. The General Membership Meeting for September was held at the American Legion Post 33, located on the corner of Barrancas Avenue and G Street. We had 25 members who made the meeting and enjoyed the pot luck dinner organized by PC Kathy Champagne. Ken Champagne did a great job as Bar Tender. VC Sutton is to be commended for all his efforts in getting the facility set up for our use. Also, PC Lloyd Stagg was

3 the availability of a ramp to the entrance of the building. A really beneficial item is they have plenty of close in parking to the building. It is completely air conditioned and they have a full kitchen which will be available for our use. Our October meeting will be held at the Crow s Nest on October 6. The Nominating Committee is in the final process of identifying members that want to serve in leadership positions for the Navy Yacht Club Bridge for the year We are in need of someone to serve as Treasurer. If you feel that you can undertake the responsibility required of the Treasurer, please make your desires known to PC Kathy Champagne or any member of the Bridge. 4 Vice s Verses Bob Sutton Hello All, So the volunteers did an outstanding job for the Ship- Wreck Jaws 2 party. The partying this year has been great!!! As we move into the fall I hope we start seeing more members at the Meetings (only three more this year). We have a lot to talk about and decisions to be made. This has been a great year for the Marina parties but I think we can do better. We need to try sending flyers to the squadrons so we can get some possible new members out to see us. We need to let everyone on the base know who we are. September 17 th is the WAVE and it should be an all hands on deck evolution. We need help from everyone that cares about veterans!!! Please sign up and help. Next after that is the Commodores Cup #2and #3 on September 24 th please come out and help at the regatta and watch the racing. That brings us to the meeting at Post 33. I have fulfilled my promise to try to find a place to have meetings off base. With a lot of hard work by all who helped set up the Post we had a good meeting members showed up and got to have a chance to see what it would be like to move. What I need is the feedback from all that were at the meeting on what their real feelings are about Post 33. I would also like any input from any member to help with the decision on what we do from here. If you have input and just want to send it to me, send me an , and I will compile a list of all thoughts without names (rrsutton01@cox.net). At the last membership meeting I asked for input on paper to bring to the bridge and I got one response. I am starting to get worried that no one has input or no one cares about what we do with the Club. I know in my heart that that can t be the case in either case. Please give input!!! Without your input it makes decisions almost impossible. We will still be looking for a new home but at this time this is the best I have to offer. I next membership meeting will be at the Crow s Nest in October. rrsutton01@cox.net (662) Bob Sutton Vice Commodore We are looking for next year s NYCP board officers if you are interested in holding a position on the Navy Yacht Club Board please notify one of the current officers regarding your interest. For questions or more information, contact the Public Works Depart (PWD) Construction Manager Bryan Moeller at , ext NYCP Nominating Committee Chair P/C Kathy Champagne The nominating committee requests the names of candidates for the 2017 Bridge team. With this request they urge each member to view serving on the Bridge as your personal contribution to the success of the club. Time table: Candidates that have come forth will be presented at the October 6th General Membership meeting. Nominations from the floor will be accepted at that time. Elections for 2017 will take place at the November 3rd General Membership meeting and again nominations will be open briefly from the floor at the meeting. 12 Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for this new Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay in 2016, not just in your home club regattas. There will be 12 regattas in the series and only 9 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 4 offshore races* only. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship. 17 Florida Department of State - Division of Historical Resources Florida Humanities Council invites you: For more information: Enjoy our events around the state! Viva Florida Fun Fact As the Nation s First settlement attempt, the Pensacola Bay Area plays a significant role in over 500 years of history that helped to create the State of Florida. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts The great amphibious invasions in North Africa and Europe were not as dependent upon Naval aviation as those in the Pacific Theater during World War II. However, on Nov. 8, 1942, when Allied forces went ashore in North Africa as part of Operation Torch, among the aircraft in the air supporting them were planes from three escort carriers, with another baby flattop used to transport and then launch 78 Army Air Forces fighter planes to an airfield on shore. Viva Florida Promoting Florida s History and Culture The operation of unmanned aerial vehicles is one of the latest advancements in modern weaponry, these platforms flown by personnel located thousands of miles away from them able to scout for the enemy and deliver ordnance. In Naval aviation, experiments in unmanned flight occurred a short time after World War I. One such instance was Sept. 15, 1924, when a radio-controlled N-9 seaplane flew for 40 minutes, the fact that the flight ended with the plane sinking after an errant water landing not diminishing the progress made on that day. Pensacola Fun Fact! For any fighter pilot, the mark of excellence is shooting down five enemy aircraft in air-to-air combat to earn the title of ace. In Naval aviation, the first to achieve this feat was Lt. j.g. David S. Ingalls, who on Sept. 24, 1918, shot down his fifth aircraft in six weeks of combat while flying Sopwith Camels as an exchange pilot with the Royal Air Force. More Fun Facts! The ship entered service on May 12, 1938, the war that would define her service having not yet begun. She became known as the Big E, and from 1941 to 1945, she was a symbol of Naval aviation in the Pacific war from her service as the flagship for the legendary Adm. William F. Bull Halsey to her participation in four of the five carrier vs. carrier battles of World War II. Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrestal called USS Enterprise, the one vessel that most nearly symbolizes the history of the Navy in this war. In the midst of the unpopular war, Jessie Beck of Reno, Nevada, provided unwavering support to a squadron of pilots tasked with flying dangerous combat missions over North Vietnam.
