2 Events of World War II to be commemorated Over the next four years: 75 th Anniversary of the U.S. Navy Experiences in World War II December 7, th Anniversary of The Attack on Pearl Harbor the Start of WWII Starting with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 2016 through the anniversary of the Japanese surrender onboard USS Missouri on September 2, World War II history has always been of intense interest to both our service and the country at large and for a very good reason said Naval History and Heritage Command Director Sam Cox. It was a worldwide conflict with existential consequences that continue to unfold, and it affected every American. America is a maritime nation whose security is tied to the sea and depends on a capable and credible U.S. Navy General Membership Meeting for August- City Dogs Great Cities, Great Dogs REMINDER: Our August General Membership Meeting has been changed to the second Thursday August 10 th to accommodate those NYCP members who will be attending and presenting the annual PMOA meeting giving out their scholarships. Please pass the word!!! From the Helm: AUGUST 2017 Commodore s Comments BOB SUTTON I would like to start off by saying what an amazing party at the Crow s Nest after the Bikini Regatta!!! I have been part of NYCP for some time and have never seen 65 to 75 people in that space at one time. That was the count and all having a great time. I do need to thank some volunteers for their hard work and time they put into the party. I know that I will not have space or memory to remember all that helped but there were some that stood out. First the regatta chair Kim Kaminski worked very hard to make this an outstanding event. (Thank you Kim) Also without the gate team we would have had no boat crews and skippers to party with. That team consisted of Molly Werner, PC Doug Werber, and Jim Parsons. (Thank you team) Next is the Food and as I have grown to expect Sandy Pyle and her team did an outstanding job. Now we get to the bar, when I got to the party the drinks were flowing but I didn t know the bartender. I did find out that Michele Nash brought a friend and he was tending bar, what a great job. The Dark and Stormy was the idea of the vice Bill Clark and it was a big hit. (Thank you bar team). We received over $ in donations from the bar. This is the kind of Regatta party we need to have all the time. We did however have a problem with our pin set boat during the race on Saturday. It stopped running. We have taken Stryper to the doctor and the estimate is about $ to put it back in working order. The bridge voted to have the work done so it should be working for the September Regatta. This is the first work done on the boat since we bought it. It was about due to have some work done on it. We have had two big meetings this week, one with the Security team and the other with someone that may be able to help with Crow s Nest access. Come to the Monthly membership meeting on August 10 th and hear all about it. This is a slow month for us and a chance to not have to volunteer for any events but next month we have the second to the last Regatta of the year and we have the W.A.V.E. event so please get out and volunteer

3 I am going to end with an apology for not having the Foghorn for July out on the website. The Website Director was out of town for the month and the system he had set up for remote access didn t work. I have fixed this problem and it should not happen again. rrsutton01@cox.net (662) Bob Sutton 2017 Commodore 2017 NYCP Racing Calendar September 23, 2017 Commodore s Cup #3 (Bay Champ #10) November 4, 2017 Commodore s Cup #4 / Veteran Regatta All sailors have something in common the importance of keeping sailing vibrant and strong for future generations Upcoming Local Regattas Meetings- Gatherings AUGUST 2 NYCP Board Meeting held at PYC - NYCP 5 Little Salts and Old Salts PYC 5 Fiesta of Five Flags Cancer Society- (rescheduled) PYC 5 Round the Rig MYC 5-6 GYA J22 PCYC 5-6 Summer in the Pass PCYC 10 NYCP Membership Meeting NYCP Knost Championship PCYC Knost PHRF Championship PCYC 19 Big Mouth PBYC 19 The PYC to Paradise Predicted Log Race - PYC Galloway GYA Sunfish/Laser Championship GYC 26 Katrina Memorial OSYC 26 Preemie Cup PBYC 26 Pam Sintes - NOYC Back to School Regatta Dinghy Challenge PontYC Rock, Paper, Scissors BSC NYCP = Navy Yacht Club PBYC = Pensacola Beach Yacht Club PYC = Pensacola Yacht Club BSC = Birmingham Sailing Club GYC = Gulfport Yacht Club MYC = Mobile Yacht Club NOYC = New Orleans Yacht Club OSYC = Ocean Springs Yacht Club PCYC = Pass Christian Yacht Club PontYC = Pontchartrain Yacht Club The Navy Yacht Club will now be using the US Sailing Regatta Network, powered by Regatta Network.com For all race registrations visit to obtain registration the link. Vice s Verses Bill Clark Ahoy Navy Yacht Club and Friends: The Bikini Regatta was quite a success again this year thanks to too many members to thank and some that were not even members. I will just name a few but there were many more: Kim Kaminski, Bob Sutton, John Matthews, Ken Pyle, Jim Parsons, Molly Werner, and Sandy Pyle just to name a few. The Crow s Nest was as full as I have seen it in a while. For most of the afternoon with sailors, visitors, and members coming and going we had at least fifty to seventy people present most of the time. Jim Andrews provided the easy listening music for us on his clarinet. There was a battle between Dark and Stormys, Margaritas, and Yuenglings with lots of bottles of water left over. There was not a drop of the Margaritas and Dark and Stormys left by the time we were closing down. No arguments, no fights, nobody drank too much, I don t know, maybe no one had fun after all. For a day that had rain in its forecast there certainly were quite a few with mucho sol. I am certain that if you did not have the opportunity to attend the Bikini Regatta you will be able to pick up a souvenir or two in the way of shirts, caps, and Bikini Regatta Cups. You certainly will not be able to make up for missing all the camaraderie, fun, and fellowship. You really need to make this rodeo, excuse me, regatta next year. We need new members. How many of you have no friends at all? How many of you just don t have any active duty of retired friends? You poor souls! All right now, how many of you have plenty of friends and especially retired

4 military friends. You are the ones I need help from. All you need to do is invite them to a free dinner at the Crow s nest at the next meeting. And the next meeting and the next meeting! If you are tired of hearing about new members bring in enough so we are packed as we were at the Bikini Regatta after party and I promise I won t mention it for a while. We need to get to work. By the way, I want to thank all of you that helped clean up the Crow s Nest after the party. Since we had so many attend we had a major mess. Even Commodore Bob pitched in and helped. I did hear him gripe though how the PYC Commodore never has to clean up anything. Seriously, he is always only too glad to help. It seems like all the older people help and I am usually the only youngster there. We need more youngsters to help. I did meet the Deputy of Military Affairs for Matt Gaetz. I plan on speaking with him next week about our accessibility problem at the Crow s Nest. Hopefully I will be able to do that next week. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue in if so, there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 9 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 4 offshore races* only. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola and our Navy heritage! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts Viva Florida Promoting Florida s History and Culture It was a distinction that no Naval aviator wanted, but Lt. Jack L. Fruin had reason to be thankful when he floated down to Earth beneath his parachute on Aug. 9, Just minutes before, he had been traveling at a speed of more than 575 mph in his F2H Banshee when he experienced an in-flight emergency. When he pulled the handle and shot out of the cockpit, he became the first pilot in the United States to use an ejection seat for an emergency escape. Pensacola Fun Fact! Aug. 12, 1957, was a typical summer day on the Panhandle, the sunbathers on the beach little aware of tests underway in the Gulf of Mexico off Pensacola. On board the aircraft carrier Antietam (CVS 36), an F3D Skyknight made the first of 50 landings on the flight deck, uncommon in the fact that they were the first shipboard tests of the Automatic Carrier Landing System, which was designed to bring an aircraft aboard in any weather without assistance from the pilot. More Fun Facts! On Aug. 5, 1964, Navy aircraft off the carriers Constellation (CVA 64) and Ticonderoga (CVA 14) executed the first air attack by United States forces against North Vietnam, which signaled an escalation of the war in Southeast Asia. Lt. j.g. Richard Sather was shot down and killed in action on that day, while another pilot, Lt.

16 j.g. Everett Alvarez Jr., managed to eject from his crippled aircraft. He became the first Naval aviator held as a prisoner by the North Vietnamese. His repatriation did not come until It was one of the great dramas of interwar aviation as three PN-9 flying boats made ready to launch from San Francisco on a planned flight to Hawaii on Aug. 31, Mechanical difficulties prevented one plane from taking off and forced another to turn back, leaving the airplane commanded by Commander John Rodgers, Naval Aviator No. 2, to press on alone. Lack of fuel necessitated a landing short of the goal, Rodgers and his crew lost at sea for nine days as they used the fabric on their aircraft s wings to rig sails and guide their flying boat toward land. Eventually found by a submarine, the crew received a hero s welcome in Hawaii, the distance their plane traveled before being forced down (1, miles) was recognized as a world record for seaplanes.
