1 55 th ANNUAL NAVY CUP REGATTA

2 Events of World War II to be commemorated Over the next four years: 75 th Anniversary of the U.S. Navy Experiences in World War II December 7, th Anniversary of The Attack on Pearl Harbor the Start of WWII Starting with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 2016 through the anniversary of the Japanese surrender onboard USS Missouri on September 2, World War II history has always been of intense interest to both our service and the country at large and for a very good reason said Naval History and Heritage Command Director Sam Cox. It was a worldwide conflict with existential consequences that continue to unfold, and it affected every American. America is a maritime nation whose security is tied to the sea and depends on a capable and credible U.S. Navy 35 th America s Cup May 26 th thru June 27, 2017 Louis Vuitton America s Cup Qualifiers Bermuda In June 2017, the best sailors in the world will convene in Bermuda for the 35th America s Cup, presented by Louis Vuitton. The pinnacle of international sailing, the America s Cup has generated intense excitement and fierce rivalries for more than 160 years. Now, for the first time, this premier event will take place in Bermuda, an island founded on a legacy of sailing. The drama will unfold in Bermuda s Great Sound, a magnificent natural amphitheater set amid a spectacular backdrop of islands and beaches. Now is the time to make the plan, not when a storm is in the Gulf. This is predicted to be a very active year for storms. Say a prayer and be prepared. June is also a big Month for Navy Yacht Club Pensacola. Navy Cup is here and it s time to volunteer. The CO of the base Captain Martin has just responded to my request to have him give the Navy Cup to the winning Club of the 55 Navy Cup Regatta. He will be here and I hope that we have a good turnout of members on Sunday 11 June to support the club when that happens. I want to thank all of the members that put in so much time and effort making this year s Navy Cup Brochure such a success with a goal very close to being made. I want to give a special thanks to Kim Kaminski for taking all the ads that the members added to the ads that the businesses put in to come very close to that goal. This shows that there is a very strong nucleus to this club that wants to see it continue, and care about having a great Commodores Ball, thanks to you and your member ads. We added 10 more pages this year and it should be out by Friday. Great job all!!! The Boy Scout troop 66 was in town this week and it was a lot of fun. The Navy Yacht Club donated the meals for the two day event and it was well perceived. A special thanks to Tina Sulser for chairing the event. It took a few hard working volunteers to make it happen and I thank all of you that helped. It was great to see them out on the water learning how to sail. If you would like to hear more about the two days come to the membership meeting and here all about it. We have another event in June, the Summer Sailstice-the first Marina party of the year on June 24 th at 1500(3pm) and we are still looking for volunteers for that day. We will have live entertainment and Margaritas. Please come out and join us and have some fun. As we enter the half way month of this bridge s year we are still looking for ways to bring in new members, and ways to keep the ones we have. If you have any ideas please bring them to a bridge member or to a bridge meeting so we can hear your ideas.

3 My bridge has been working very hard this year trying to make NYCP the place to be. Thank you to all of my team that work long hours to better this Club and keep it fun. All sailors have something in common the importance of keeping sailing vibrant and strong for future generations Vice s Verses Bill Clark Ahoy Navy Yacht Club and Friends: I hate to be the bearer of bad news however, someone has to do it. As a Navy Yacht Club we are surviving but we can do better. We need for everyone to help and not just a scattered few. If you want our club to succeed we need everyone to do something. Something does not mean everything (although some try to do everything). When you are overworked and active in every aspect you burn out or have to stop. We would like for that not to happen and it shouldn t happen. Some of the tasks you enjoy and others don t, so find what you enjoy the most and help. As most of you know we have been striving to bring in advertising for our Navy Cup Brochure. Actually only a very few members worked extremely hard selling the ads and did a fine job. After that, a few more members spent a small amount of time to bring in a few ads but not as many

4 as we could have had. Most members did very little to help us in our largest money maker of the year. A few members also purchased ads themselves to help build up the club. I certainly hope we will be able to come up with another idea or two so that we can bring our financial totals to a better state than we have right now. If any of you have any ideas I am all ears. Our primary goal of increasing membership has also fallen down and needs to be revived. We are doing better at the front gate now as many have been able to have six month passes issued. There are thousands of active duty and retired military personnel surrounding the base many with boats (even quite a few with sailboats). The price to join is inexpensive, the members are great people, the regattas are well planned, and other activities are aplenty. We need at least half of the club members to be involved in one or the other from above. Some will be in both halves. Either you need to invite and sell prospects on joining the NYCP to keep it active or help us raise money to keep the yacht club active. Obviously, the more members we have the easier it is to operate. If everyone would recruit at least one member and if everyone would bring in at least $ in ads we would be way ahead and able to make some needed changes. What do you say? Isn t it time you decided to get on board? Not everyone will read this. Not all of those that take the time to read our Foghorn will pay attention. Certainly those doing the work would agree. Unfortunately, we have all heard this before and in other organizations we belong to. What is your decision going to be? Are you happy with your participation as it is or can you step it up a little and get with the program? I may be on this theme for a while or unless there is a change. Don t take it to personal - we need to move it up a notch or two. Ken Pyle Fleet Captain kpyle1968@gmail.com (850) Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for this new Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay and not just in your home club regattas. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue in if so, there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 9 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 4 offshore races* only. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order

14 NYCP - Historical Archives 2017 marks 86 Years of Navy Yacht Club HISTORY and the 55 th Annual Navy Cup Hello All, If you have any old photos of the Navy Yacht Club or any of the club s past activities, please be sure to contact any member of the yacht club board or send them to the Foghorn for archiving. If you take any new photos please send us a copy - We are planning a special presentation for the end of the year and your photos will help make the celebration significant. Thanks for your help in keeping our history alive. In 2011, Kathy Champagne searched through vintage GOSPORTs, and collaborated with Hill Goodspeed, Naval Aviation Museum Historian, to reveal the following NYCP sailors, who are most likely our founders: *A. Dixon winged in 1931 *William Masland winged in 1931 *H. Starves winged in 1931 *J.H. Smith winged in 1932 We have been entrusted with a rich legacy, for which we should feel honored to protect. Historical Archives Who else in our Navy Yacht Club family has an interesting moment in history here on the Pensacola Naval Air Station? Navy Yacht Club Pensacola has a long prestigious history: Founded by flight students at NASP in 1931 Navy Cup--Originated in 1962, with the trophy provided by the US Navy. A unique club competition concept that was, by request of the base, part of the th Anniversary Celebration of NASP *The race to Isla Mujeres celebrating over 50 years was only possible because of the collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation Regatta that commemorated the 75th Anniversary of Naval Aviation *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept in female competitive sailing to Pensacola Bay that has been replicated by other local clubs *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots, offering military students the opportunity to compete on the water at a minimal membership cost *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have' given so much for our freedom. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola and our Navy heritage! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts It is ironic that a battle of such far-reaching implications took its name from a small atoll, but such was the nature of the Pacific Theater in World War II. On June 3-6, 1942, a force of three U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and escorting ships along with airplanes based at Midway Atoll successfully blunted a Japanese offensive. Though the U.S. Navy lost the carrier Yorktown (CV 5), carrier-based SBD Dauntless dive-bombers sank four Japanese carriers, all of them veterans of the Pearl Harbor raid. Viva Florida Promoting Florida s History and Culture The two F8U Crusaders streaked over the carrier Saratoga (CVA 60) steaming off the East Coast of Florida and soon trapped on her flight deck, three hours and 28 minutes after they had launched from the deck of another flattop, Bon Homme Richard (CVA 31), which was operating off the coast of California. The transcontinental carrier-to-carrier flight drew the attention of one distinguished observer on board Saratoga that day, June 6, 1957 President Dwight D. Eisenhower was commemorating the 13th anniversary of the D-Day landing he commanded by welcoming the pilots. Pensacola Fun Fact! His name was one of the most unique in Naval aviation history, one that bespoke mythic qualities. On June 4, 1930, Lt. Apollo Soucek climbed into a Wright Apache aircraft and completed a flight that was superhuman in scope, taking the open-cockpit aircraft to an altitude of 43,166 feet in establishing a world altitude record. More Fun Facts! On June 2, 1941, the Navy commissioned a new class of aircraft carrier when USS Long Island (ACV/CVE 1) joined the fleet. Converted from a cargo ship into a carrier, her early operations involved testing the feasibility of operating aircraft from smaller flight decks. It was a concept that worked with Long Island, followed by 85 more of what were eventually called escort carriers. To many sailors, however, they were baby flattops. On June 26, 1948, Gen. Lucius Clay initiated Operation Vittles, known in history as the Berlin Airlift, a massive resupply effort in response to a Soviet blockade of the German city. Among the units called to participate in the operation was a pair of Navy transport squadrons (VR-6 and VR-8) called to Germany from their bases in the Pacific. For eight months they formed a vital link in the supply chain, a crowning achievement coming in March 1949 when they helped U.S. aircraft deliver 154,475 tons of supplies. On the night of June 19, 1968, Lt. j.g. Clyde E. Lassen and his crew flew their UH-2 Seasprite helicopter over enemy territory on a mission to rescue two crewmen who had bailed out of their F-4 Phantom II fighter over North Vietnam. Arriving at the location of the downed men, Lassen braved enemy fire and skillfully kept his helicopter airborne after it inadvertently struck a tree in the darkness, at one point illuminating his landing lights to guide the F-4 Phantom II crew to the helicopter. Returning to a ship off the coast of Vietnam with fuel for only five minutes of flight, Lassen later received the Medal of Honor for his actions. Young Naval officer John Towers was far from his Georgia roots when he arrived at Hammondsport, N.Y., on June 27, 1911, the weeks ahead separating him further from most Americans as he learned to fly an airplane, eventually receiving the designation as Naval Aviator No. 3. In the dangerous business that was early flight, he was the senior most naval aviator to survive, his long career that culminated with his retirement as an admiral in 1947, including service as an aircraft carrier commander, Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics, and Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Wrote his widow in describing his legacy, It was a curious chance of fate that he happened to be young, fearless and stubborn when flying was a daily discovery. 21 Dear US Sailing Members, Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Upcoming events at Pirates Cove for the 60 th Anniversary: Illuminating Autism FunRaiser for High Hopes 4 Autism organization June 2, 3, &4 30 th Annual Lost Bay Regatta & Cove Dog Olympics October 7 Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival November Maryland and Florida have proposed legislation that could adversely impact our sport. This is an update sharing the good news regarding Maryland Senate Bill State Boat Act and Florida Senate Bill Salt Water Boat Act. Earlier this year, US Sailing received numerous communications from our members and other sailors who were concerned about potential legislation in Maryland and Florida that would negatively impact sailing and boating in those states. Due to the support and outreach from our members, experts on our government relations committee, other national boating organizations and the broader community of sailing and boating activists, these bills have been nullified and prevented from passing in their current forms. Thank you for sharing your concerns and perspective on these developments. Regarding Maryland Senate Bill 1147-State Boat Act, James Muldoon, US Sailing s Vice President of Government Relations testified on behalf of US Sailing in opposition of this proposed bill. The bill would prohibit operation of a vessel while a person aboard is riding on, or suspended from, the bow, gunwale or transom of the vessel. This legislation would have a negative impact on sailing and US Sailing is strongly opposed to any legislation that would limit sailors' abilities to operate boats in a manner consistent with normal operational methods and practices for any type of sailboats, from sailboards and kites to dinghies, keelboats and multihulls, inshore and offshore. Testimony from Jim Muldoon, the chair of US Sailing s Government Relations Committee, coupled with outreach from our members, sailors, and other boating organizations all helped stall the bill in the Maryland Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee. When the Maryland General Assembly session ended on April 10, the legislation was nullified. The Florida Senate Bill Salt Water Boat Act would have limited the rights of minors to operate small powerboats (10 hp or greater) and sailboats (10 or longer) in salt water without direct supervision of an adult over the age of 21. This proposed legislation could have damaging effects on youth sailing in one of the most impactful states to the sport of sailing in the US. Due to extensive feedback from boating experts, combined with strong public support in opposition of this legislation, the bill was indefinitely postponed and withdrawn from consideration on Friday, May 5. Indications are that Maryland Senator James Mathias and Florida Senator Gary Farmer s offices will both be pursuing alternatives to their respective bills for the 2018 legislative session. The US Sailing Government Relations Committee will continue to actively engage with both Senator s offices and plan to offer legislative input this summer that protects and serves the interest of the US Sailing membership. Everyone understands and accepts that safety is the most important consideration in our sport and the well-being of our young sailors is a paramount concern for US Sailing. We understand and support the goals of our government leaders to encourage and promote boating safety. With this, we believe both of these proposed pieces of legislation have been drafted

22 by well-intended state elected officials without complete understanding of our sport and the subsequent impacts on it. It is very important that all of us help the legislators understand the true factors that provide for a safer boating environment: education, practice, mentoring and experience. These attributes are what develop competency and safe boating practices. Sailing has the strongest safety record in the boating community, and all of us take pride that our sport places safety first. With this, the US Coast Guard has relied on the sailing community and has designated US Sailing as a leader in facilitating national consensus development of on-water boating education standards, utilizing our education, safety standards and protocols, all of which have been practiced for 50 plus years. We will keep you updated on our progress in these states, as well as, any new developments on boating legislation that might impact sailors nationwide. Thank you again for your concerns and encouragement. Views from the Committee Boat Havana Cuba Race Start photos by Molly Werner Sincerely, Bruce J.
