1 Sail into the Holidays. To All Our Military Friend, Sailing Friends and Family We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

2 2016 marks 85 Years of Navy Yacht Club HISTORY Established April 12 th, 1931 Navy Yacht Club Pensacola has a long prestigious history: Founded by flight students at NASP in 1931 Navy Cup--Originated in 1962, with the trophy provided by the US Navy. A unique club competition concept that was, by request of the base, part of the th Anniversary Celebration of NASP *The race to Isla Mujeres celebrating over 50 years was only possible because of the collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation Regatta that commemorated the 75th Anniversary of Naval Aviation *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept in female competitive sailing to Pensacola Bay that has been replicated by other local clubs *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots, offering military students the opportunity to compete on the water at a minimal membership cost *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have' given so much for our freedom. The originator of Wounded American Veterans Event, WAVE, is "rolling" around Florida, thanks to adoption by the Florida Commodores Association. This "Day on the Bay" is a labor of love for hosting yacht clubs NYCP supports the Dan Smith Memorial Youth Sailing Scholarship In 2011, Kathy Champagne searched through vintage GOSPORTs, and collaborated with Hill Goodspeed, Naval Aviation Museum Historian, to reveal the following NYCP sailors, who are most likely our founders: *A. Dixon winged in 1931 *William Masland winged in 1931 *H. Starves winged in 1931 *J.H. Smith winged in 1932 We have been entrusted with a rich legacy, for which we should feel honored to protect. DECEMBER 2016 Commodore s Comments JOHN MATTHEWS From the Helm: By the time you read this article we will have concluded the annual Commodore s Ball and recognition of many of our members who have made a significant contribution to NYCP s success this year. As your outgoing Commodore, I want to say how much I have enjoyed being your Commodore and working with many outstanding members throughout the two years I have served. It has been an honor for me to have been Commodore, Navy Yacht Club Pensacola. I have had the pleasure of working with Bob Sutton over the past several years. I know he will be an Outstanding Commodore for NYCP and work toward making NYCP ever better as a significant contributing yacht club on Pensacola Bay and within the Gulf Yachting Association. The new Bridge Officers and Directors are committed to ensuring NYCP s success this coming year. However, they will not be able to do this without the continued support of all the members of NYCP. I know that each of you will do your best to make NYCP the best in all its endeavors. I intend to continue my service and participation in all NYCP events and activities in the future. Becoming your Immediate Past Commodore does not imply an end to my involvement. It simply underscores my personal commitment to making NYCP better in all its activities. 5 Vice s Verses Bob Sutton Hello All, The vote is in. The overwhelming vote went to stay in the Crow s Nest. The membership has spoken. Now we just have to figure out how to live with the decision. Membership is still the name of the game to keep this club alive. The next step will be to work hard to come up with a way to get members and racers on the base. Also to get the marina tenants engaged. My January Foghorn will have more details, as my first one as Commodore. Commodores Cup #4 finally happened on the 5 th thanks in big part to Flack Logan who offered to use his boat as committee boat. It was a windy day and the anchor didn t hold on the first run, but we did get a race in, and the Regatta dogs were great after the race. Also the sailing chips were outstanding. This is my last month as Vice Commodore so I want to thank all the people that helped me with making this a great year for the membership. There is a lot that goes on to make a great meeting happen, and I want to thank two people that were there for me all year long. Ken Champagne was my head bar tender all year long, and Kathy Champagne as the best setup and planner for meetings that I have ever seen. Thank you both. Next is the Commodores Ball and I have 76 that will be intendance. I will be looking forward to spreading some Christmas cheer with all of you. Don t forget if you paid awhile ago and forgot the date it is Friday 2 December. I hope you have a great time. I will!!! As my new year starts I look forward to a great year but it can only be great if I receive the help and support of each and every member of the bays greatest yacht club NYCP. In closing I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May your new year be blessed with all life has to offer. rrsutton01@cox.net (662) Bob Sutton Vice Commodore NYCP FACILITY COMMITTEE: Chairman Vice Commodore Bob Sutton Members: Barry Pokorney, Don Robinson, Jim Parsons, Ellen Costigan, Liz Richbourg, Marcia Cooper and Beverly Stagg (alternate)

Marcia Cooper MISS MOONSHINE (850) Well, WAVE 2016 is in the history books, and I know that the commitment of NYCP made a difference in the lives of many individuals: Our Veterans, who felt love and caring in a unique way; Our young active duty, who experienced the voice of a grateful nation, while serving through music, posting the Colors, and many other tasks, those brave men and women who have led the way; Our skippers, who gave freely of their time, sharing with all aboard the pleasure of "A Day on the Bay"; Captain Christopher Martin and his lovely wife Catherine, who witnessed our commitment to honoring both Veterans and the men and women under his command. ALL of our many volunteers, who constantly asked, "what can I do", to which I frequently responded, "pray for sun." Those prayers must have worked! As for our decision to move forward...the right choice! Kathy Champagne kathychampagne@bellsouth.net Moonshine Get Well Messages Please send out your prayers for our Fleet Captain Barry Pokorney who is in Baptist Hospital struggling with his illnesses. Get Well wishes are being sent to you Barry. And send out your prayers for our Past Commodore Whit Johnson who is going in for surgery in December. Get Well SOON! New members: Patsy Stolty Patrick Sargent (works for the VA friend of Iva Prosser) Peter Clark Guest: Karen Randolph (new rookie crew member on Helldiver she served in the Marines and is currently working on base) We had a large crowd at our November meeting where we voted on new officers for 2017 and voted about meeting at the American Legion Post #33 (the decision was made to stay at the Crow s Nest). Jim Parsons Hello All, We held the last Commodore s Cup Race #4 / Veterans Regatta on Saturday, November 5 th (a rescheduled date because our race committee boat Maxine was broke down without her engines). Thanks to PYC member Flack Logan and his boat Blue Ghost II we had a committee boat to do the rescheduled race. 4 spinnaker boats registered to sail. The winds were strong so strong that we had to postpone the start of the race to re-anchor the committee boat because the anchor did not stick. If you are interested in being trained to help out with regattas for let me know we would love to have you help out with the races or with any of our upcoming on the water activities. 9 Commodore s Cup Race #4 To all prospective participants in the NYCP Regattas Please be advised that access to NAS Pensacola is being highly enforced. Since we (NYC) do not know in advance, we are unable to give the main gate a list of possible attendees. If you do not possess a DoD ID card, you may not be permitted access without sponsorship. You will be held at the gate until a sponsor can come to allow your entry. All persons in the car must have some form of ID, even if the driver has a DoD ID. Registration will be open at the Crow's Nest on Saturdays at Computer access to the Regatta Network will be available for your use for registration. The NOR is available on the Regatta Network website and on NYCP's web site ( under Racing. For future regattas, it is advised that you register a week in advance via Regatta Network so that we may generate a list for the Security Department, which will facilitate entrance to the base. If you anticipate entering the base and do not have the proper credentials, please furnish a list of crew members ten days in advance. We look forward to providing a great regatta with lots of participation. REGISTER TODAY! Pass this information on to other folks I may have missed. Thanks, Jim Parsons Rear Commodore FLEET CAPTAIN "Racing News" Barry Pokorney Pearl Harbor Day 75 th Anniversary December 7th Hello All, We had to postpone the Veterans Regatta - Commodore s Cup Race #4 which was to be held on Saturday, October 29 th, due to Race Management Equipment Failure (Maxine the committee boat lost both engines and we did not have a replacement vessel to run the race, but managed to reschedule the race for Saturday, November 5 th.) A big thank you goes out to Flack Logan and his boat Blue Ghost II who offered the use of his boat as a committee boat for our rescheduled date (as Maxine was still out of commission.) Flack is a

10 PYC member who also happened to be the last Commander of the USS Lexington (also known as The Blue Ghost ). I would also like to personally thank Jim Parsons for stepping in as Acting Fleet Captain during my illness. Many thanks go out to all of the Navy Yacht Club members and other yacht club members who have shown up to support our races throughout the year! Your hospitality spirit and enthusiastic volunteerism helps to keep our club going. Congratulations to all of our sailors who have been traveling to regattas representing the Navy Yacht Club and who have sailed throughout the year. Thank you for your efforts; you have helped us maintain our status in the GYA. If you have a boat (power or sail) and would like to assist us in upcoming races, or would like to learn about race committee work, please contact me. We are always looking to add new crew to the Race Committee. The Crew of Helldiver hit bottom and ran a-ground during the race rounding the leeward mark of the race course due to extreme low tides Barry Pokorney Fleet Captain barry.pokorney@gmail.com (850) Commodore s Cup Race #4 / Veterans Regatta 5 miles Spinnaker Class A 1 Wasted Time Dean Holcomb (PYC) 50:03 2 Phoenix Tony Nichols (NYCP) 52:12 3 Seabreeze Dan Owczarczak (PYC/NYCP) 55:46 4 Helldiver-Kim Kaminski (NYCP) 1:00:57 Seabreeze 3rd But they were all smiles at the end of the day because the race was held thanks to the substitute race committee boat Blue Ghost II. Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for this new Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay in 2016, not just in your home club regattas. There will be 12 regattas in the series and only 9 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 4 offshore races* only. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship. There s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc. Watch for the overall winners to be announced at the Sailor s Banquet in January GYA Winter Meeting January 6 th through 8 th, 2017 Phoenix 2nd Pensacola Yacht Club

He was going to remove the trailer and park his boat after a day of sailing with family when the accident occurred. The backstay touched a high voltage power line while his hand was on the trailer. He was airlifted Sunday night to Brandon, MS and underwent surgery to remove both his legs. The medical staff has been working hard to save his right arm, which was badly burned. Monday, September 19th John Harrison was stable enough to be transferred to a burn center in Augusta, Georgia. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to offset the unforeseen medical, travel and housing expenses for the family and so they can be there to support John Harrison through his recovery and rehabilitation. Basically members of the club can submit pictures - to the Social Committee - which have the Burgee or our license plate somewhere in the photograph. Pictures can be submitted at any time electronically or dropping them off at one of the club events to any member of the social committee. Each month the social committee will review the picture(s) submitted and selection of one along with a runner-up which is unique and would be of the most interest to the entire club to submit to the Foghorn. Club members or their guests are eligible to participate. Check out the next leg of Frank Bean s Journey on his boat Sandshark Frank Bean and the Journey of the Sand Shark -Part 3 And the Adventure continues. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts When the engineers designing the ship that became the aircraft carrier Lexington (CV 2) outfitted her with turboelectric drive power plants, they did so for performance at sea. Little did they envision that the ship s engines would be called into action to power Tacoma, Wash., when that city s hydroelectric power system failed due to drought conditions. Between Dec. 17, 1929, and Jan. 16, 1930, the flattop provided more than 4.2 million kilowatt hours to the city. Viva Florida Promoting Florida s History and Culture For the pilots and crewmen assembled in the ready rooms of the aircraft carriers of Task Force 58, the target for the day s strikes represented vindication. On Dec. 7, 1941, it had been Imperial Japanese Navy planes flying from the decks of aircraft carriers that had struck Pearl Harbor, drawing the United States and Japan into war. Now, on Feb. 16, 1945, U.S. Naval

17 carrier aircraft were set to roar off flight decks and for the first time attack the Japanese Home Islands, the only previous carrier raid on Japan having been that of the Doolittle Raiders in April Pensacola Fun Fact! On Dec. 1, 1947, the Marine Corps established its first helicopter squadron, HMX-1, which was tasked with developing the tactics for the use of rotary-wing aircraft to support an amphibious assault. Ten years later, HMX-1 assumed an additional mission it retains to this day, the squadron s helicopters serving as Marine One when transporting the president of the United States. More Fun Facts! In the first years of operations at Pensacola Naval Air Station, pioneer Naval aviators were constantly pressing against the boundaries of flight, notable among them Lt. Richard C. Saufley. In December 1915 he set an American altitude record by reaching 11,975 feet, pushing that record to 16,072 feet by April of the following year. On June 9, 1916, he attempted an endurance record, spending eight hours and 51 minutes airborne before a fatal crash ended his life More History and Cultural Facts! On Dec. 31, 1942, the U.S. Navy commissioned the lead ship of one of the most successful classes of aircraft carriers ever constructed when Essex (CV 9) joined the fleet. Twenty-three more ships followed, their service encompassing three wars, the transition to jet aircraft and service to the space program by supporting the recovery of space capsules, including that of the first men to walk on the moon. The last of the Essex-class carriers, Lexington, remained operational until Florida Department of State - Division of Historical Resources Listen: These streets have stories to tell Who built these towns - this state - we live in? They were adventurers, war refugees, homestead families, citrus growers, ranchers and cowboys, industrialists, quirky individualists, you name it.
