1 COMMODORE S CUP RACE #1

2 Events of World War II to be commemorated Over the next four years: 75 th Anniversary of the U.S. Navy Experiences in World War II December 7, th Anniversary of The Attack on Pearl Harbor the Start of WWII Starting with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 2016 through the anniversary of the Japanese surrender onboard USS Missouri on September 2, World War II history has always been of intense interest to both our service and the country at large and for a very good reason said Naval History and Heritage Command Director Sam Cox. It was a worldwide conflict with existential consequences that continue to unfold, and it affected every American. America is a maritime nation whose security is tied to the sea and depends on a capable and credible U.S. Navy Join us for the IRS Blues IRS Soup Supper At the General Membership Meeting On Thursday, April 6, 2017 APRIL 2017 Commodore s Comments From the Helm: BOB SUTTON OK so I think I will just start copying and pasting my Foghorn. I am about to say the same thing I did last month. We need Members!!! We need volunteers!!! First is membership, 53 dues paying members is how it stands at this point. This will not be sustainable in the future. We have to grow! I made a suggestion at the bridge meeting that was approved, we will be taking ½ of the dues that we received this year and put that money away in the savings account for next year. The reason being we took in two years of dues this year so the only dues income next year will be new members and less than three year members. We exist on dues income and the Navy Cup Brochure. That brings me to the second item, Volunteers! It seems to me that the same small group of members is always doing all the work. If we were a Club of 300 then the 10% volunteer rule would be OK, that would be 30 members doing all the work, but we are a Club of 73 including the honorary members. I include the honorary members because a lot of them do a lot of the work. So you see what I am getting at 7.3 members doing it all will make this Club fold! I have heard from members that I put in my time I don t have to do that anymore. We all need to help if the NYCP is going to make it. This means all members should be on the lookout for new members and all members should be helping out selling ads for the Brochure. If you want to keep this Club going it will take all of us to make that happen and everyone can be proud to be part because we all do our part. Sue is looking for flying Scot crew member volunteers for this year s racing, if you are interested please contact Sue. The Boy Scouts will be in town at the Crows Nest on the 30 th and 31 st of May and we will be looking for help if they need it. Tina is heading this up with MWR so any help we can give we will. She will have more info to pass out as it becomes available. Income Day Tax April 18, 2017 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY NAVY YACHT CLUB Celebrating 86 years on April 12, 2017 We had a great turn out for the first Regatta of the year and I want to thank All the Volunteers that help make it happen, on the water and off. Next are the CC#2/Anniversary Regatta April 8 and we still need Volunteers, on the water and off. So come out and help support your NYCP. I hope to see all of you at the Membership Meeting on April 6 th at 1730 for social hour, it is soup night and I don t know what that means but Sandy and Renee have not let me down or left me hungry yet!!! One last thing, I do love NYCP and I do want it to succeed, so if I am being hard with my words it s only because I care about

3 every one of the members of NYCP and want to continue being a part of this Club for many years to come. 4 Vice s Verses important and we have a lock on most of them. Our future is in bringing in NEW MEMBERS and insuring we are not neglecting those who have just not quite fit in yet. Bill Clark Hello Navy Yacht Club and Friends: We did have a grand time at the last meeting on the 2 nd of March. We are having more and more members come back in for the festivities. St. Patrick s theme complete with Irish Chow and all the greenery was great. If you missed it, you missed a fun time. If you are afraid you will not make it through the gate we have our own Molly Werner, Membership chairwoman, at the gate to assist you to gain access to the Navy Base and direct you to the Crow s Nest. She will assist you in securing an ID that will allow you to come aboard more easily. She will also take out of any evil pirates that try to crash through the gate without proper credentials and force them to walk the plank with or without their parrot. Our next meeting is April the 6 th. Our theme will be an IRS Supper. I certainly hope most of us are done with the IRS at least for this year. We need help from every member of the Navy Yacht Club for the next several weeks to gather support for the Navy Cup Brochure. This is by far our largest income project by far for the entire year. If you want to keep the cost of dues down we all need to figure out who we can contact to support the brochure. When I say we I do not mean just those on the NYCP Bridge. After all how, much how much does it cost you to ask those you buy from or who are friends with to give them the paperwork (which you can find on our Navy Yacht Club website) so they can receive more business through the purchase of an ad. It is a win, win situation and we certainly do not want to resort to increasing the club dues to help cover our costs. Most everything can be looked at in at least two ways. Don t look at it the wrong way just so you do not have to participate. In addition, we will have opportunities for you to purchase your own personal ad a way that you can help support the Navy Cup. Look for more information about purchasing an ad during our next meeting. Have you ever noticed the Flag decals on car windows with one or two blue or gold stars? Have you ever noticed that some women wear a Flag lapel pin with the same type of stars? The Service Flag was designed and patented in WWI. Blue stars were worn to show the mothers that had a child or children serving in the war depending on the number of stars. In 1918 President Wilson approved a request to cover the blue star with a gold star if the child was killed in the war. This became much more widespread in WWII. The Blue Star is for service during a war and the Gold Star is for one that has lost his or her life while serving our nation. If you happen to see these stars being worn, thank them for service or sacrifice. As I said last month our future is not in having better races. Our future is not in having better food. Our future is not in having our Club Store sell more merchandise. These things are Bill Clark Vice Commodore (850) NYCP Social Committee The Social Committee helps with: Membership Meetings, Regattas and Special Events Here is a list of some of our events in 2017: Membership Meetings: Renee Sutton & Sandy Pyle sandypyle12@gmail.com April Meeting IRS Soup Supper May Meeting Cinco de Mayo Walking Taco Marina Party: Kathy Champagne kathychampagne@bellsouth.net Summer Sailstice (Its 5 oclock Somewhere) June 24, 2017 Tribute to Trader Jon Date to be determined Pensacola thru the Art Date to be determined Tree Trimming Party December 4, 2017 We are always looking for volunteers to help with our social activities if you would like to help cook, bartend, and clean-up or help provide assistance this is the committee for you. Ken Pyle Fleet Captain kpyle1968@gmail.com (850) Maxine Sansom Championship Series FLEET CAPTAIN "Racing News" Ken Pyle Hello All, Our first race of the year the Commodore s Cup #1 (also known as Maxine Sansom #1 and Bay Championship #2) was held on Saturday, March 4, Our Race Committee boat Sand Shark was provided by NYCP members Frank and Penny Bean. We had gorgeous weather but little wind and had to postpone the race start until 2:00PM. The plan was to hold 2 races a windward / leeward race and a triangle race, but due to the wind delay only one race was held. 10 boats were registered to sail and were broken into two Spinnaker classes (we did not have any Non-Spinnaker entries). Competition was close in the A class were 33 seconds separated 2 nd & 3 rd Place, and 36 seconds separated 3 rd & 4 th place. Our next race the Commodore s Cup Race #2 aka Anniversary Regatta and Bay Championship Race #5 will be held on Saturday, April 8 th and then on the following day the Florida Commodore s Association Pensacola Yacht Club Chapter will host the Annual Blessing of the Fleet were skippers and crews of all boats of all kind are encourage to decorate their boats and come for a blessing to safeguard ships and crews 27 th Annual Maxine Sansom Memorial Championship NOTE: The first Maxine Sansom Race was held in 1989 and the first Spinnaker Class winner was our own Past Commodore Lloyd Stagg. In the Genoa (Non-Spinnaker) Class the winner was our new NYCP member Kim Connerley. Doug Sansom (Maxine s son) wonders who the 2017 winner will be for the 27 th Annual Maxine Sansom Series. (the only year the series was not held was 2005 due to Hurricane Ivan.)

This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue in if so, there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 9 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed

12 within the series and awards for these 4 offshore races* only. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship. Col.James H. Doolittle launching from the pitching and rolling flight deck of the aircraft carrier Hornet (CV 8) to strike Japan. The April 18, 1942, flight was a tremendous boost to American morale, the road to that momentous day beginning at Eglin Field, where Lt. j.g. Henry L. Miller, a Pensacola-based flight instructor, taught the Doolittle Raiders how to make shorttakeoffs that they would experience aboard ship. Viva Florida Promoting Florida s History and Culture During the Great Depression, the number of flight students training at Pensacola Naval Air Station was small, the lean economic times limiting resources available for the Navy. Yet, with war clouds on the horizon, on April 15, 1935, Congress passed the Aviation Cadet Act, which created opportunities for college graduates to receive flight training and serve three years of active duty, at the conclusion of which they would receive a bonus. The program brought thousands into the ranks of Naval aviators, with aviation cadets forming the backbone of Naval aviation during World War II. For the pilots and crewmen assembled in the ready rooms of the aircraft carriers of Task Force 58, the target for the day s strikes represented vindication. On Dec. 7, 1941, it had been Imperial Japanese Navy planes flying from the decks of aircraft carriers that had struck Pearl Harbor, drawing the United States and Japan into war. Now, on Feb. 16, 1945, U.S. Naval carrier aircraft were set to roar off flight decks and for the first time attack the Japanese Home Islands, the only previous carrier raid on Japan having been that of the Doolittle Raiders in April Pensacola Fun Fact! The name is a familiar one, Whiting Field a portal to the fleet for many a Naval aviator. The namesake for the base is Capt. Kenneth Whiting, who on May 30, 1915, received his designation as Naval Aviator No. 16. During his colorful Naval career, Whiting led the first U.S. forces to land in France during World War I and served as the first executive officer of Langley (CV 1), the Navy s first aircraft carrier, making the first catapult launch from the ship. He later commanded the

16 Navy s third carrier, USS Saratoga (CV 3). Whiting died on April 24, 1943, having been recalled to active duty during World War II. On April 25, 1940, a new carrier joined the fleet, Wasp (CV 7) carrying the name of famous vessels of war that dated back to the American Revolution. In the ensuing months she steamed into harm s way in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters, her end coming when torpedoes from a Japanese submarine slammed into her hull as she operated off Guadalcanal. The last man to leave the ship was her skipper, Capt. Forrest P. Sherman, who later became Chief of Naval Operations and is the namesake of the airfield on board Pensacola Naval Air Station. More Fun Facts! On April 2, 1931, the Navy issued a contract to Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation for production of the prototype for a new fighter, the XFF-1. Nicknamed Fifi when production models entered service, the aircraft was revolutionary in the fact that it incorporated retractable landing gear, the first Navy aircraft to do so. It also marked the first successful fighter design by Grumman, with the World War II era F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat and the venerable F-14 Tomcat among the aircraft the company eventually produced. The squadron s establishment on April 1, 1943, marked an evolution in Naval aviation. When the commanding officer of Night Fighting Squadron VF(N)-75, Lt. Cmdr. William Widhelm, read his orders that day, his new command became the Navy s first fighter squadron tasked with operating under the stars. Flying F4U Corsairs, VF(N)-75 entered combat in the Solomon Islands later that year, shooting down seven Japanese aircraft. On April 1, 1943, the Navy commissioned an air station that had been constructed on a section of real estate in rural Maryland that was far removed from population centers. It took its name from a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay that bordered it, the Patuxent River. Those who served there would forever come to know the air station as Pax River, home of the Navy s flight testing and test pilot school and for many a Naval astronaut, the gateway to outer space. Sitting in the cockpit, Capt. Frederick M. Trapnell probably couldn t help but wonder where the propeller was on the XP- 59A Airacomet. Yet, there wasn t one, the aircraft in which he sat unlike any flown by a Naval aviator. On that day, April 21, 1943, Trapnell took off from the dry lake bed at Muroc, Calif., and in so doing became the first Naval aviator to ever fly a jet aircraft. Over the past several days we have received numerous communications from our members and other sailors concerned about potential legislation in Maryland and Florida that would impact sailing and boating in those states. Thank you for sharing your concerns and perspective on these developments. In Maryland, bills have been introduced in the state senate and house that would prohibit operation of a vessel while a person aboard is riding on, or suspended from, the bow, gunwale or transom of the vessel. HB 1609 and SB 1147 were introduced by Republican Delegate Mary Ann Carozza (R-38C- Ocean City) in the Maryland House of Delegates on February 23, 2017, and by Democratic Senator James Mathias (D-38) in the Maryland Senate on February 24, These bills were cross-filed, with Delegate Carozza filing first, followed by Senator Mathias. This legislation would have a negative impact on sailing and US Sailing is strongly opposed to any legislation that would limit sailors' abilities to operate boats in a manner consistent with normal operational methods and practices for any type of sailboats, from sailboards and kites to dinghies, keelboats and multihulls, inshore and offshore. In Florida, bills have also been introduced in the state house and senate to limit the rights of minors to operate small powerboats (10 hp or greater) and sailboats (10 or longer) in salt water without direct supervision of an adult over the age of 21. Florida SB 1262 and Florida HB 1227 Boating in Salt Water were proposed by Senator Gary Farmer (D-34 Broward County shoreline Fort Lauderdale area) on Monday, February 27, 2017, and Representative Kristin Jacobs (D-96 Broward County Coconut Creek) on Friday, May 3, These bills were cross-filed with Senator Farmer filing first, followed by Representative Jacobs. In the state of Florida, there already exists an education and certification requirement for youth boaters and boaters in training. This proposed legislation could have damaging effects on youth sailing in one of the most impactful states to the sport of sailing in the US. We all understand and accept, like many youth sports and activities, that safety is an important consideration, and the well-being of our young sailors is of utmost concern for US Sailing and all involved in youth sailing programs. That is why as a community and official Olympic sport we are all committed to and provide the highest standards in training and safety. However, US Sailing is strongly opposed to any legislation that would restrict the rights of sailors of any age from participation in the sport by mandating over reaching supervision, when in reality US Sailing provides effective safety and education to all of our sailing youth. We understand and respect the goals of our government leaders to encourage and promote boating safety. With this, we believe both of these proposed pieces of legislation in both of their states respective houses have been drafted by well-intended state elected officials without complete information on their implications, as well as the true factors that provide for a safer boating environment: education, practice, mentoring and experience. These ideas are what truly develop competency and safe boating practices. Sailing has the strongest safety track record in the boating community, and we take pride that our sailors take this into account.

19 With this, the US Coast Guard has relied on the sailing community and has designated US Sailing to lead the development of on-water boating education standards because of its first class education, safety standards and protocols, all of which which have been practiced for 50 plus years. US Sailing s Government Relations Committee, whose members have extensive experience and contacts at the federal and state levels, has been in contact with leaders in both Maryland and Florida to express our objections to the pending bills as is, and offer assistance to accomplish the goals of the state leaders through alternative approaches. We are also in contact with fellow boating organizations that have a presence in Maryland and Florida to coordinate messages and pressure on state officials to amend these pieces of legislation to exclude sailing. We will continue to work through our channels to amend these bills and protect the rights of our members, sailors and boaters across the country. For our members in Maryland and Florida, we encourage you to contact the state representatives and senators proposing these bills to voice your concern on the detrimental impact these bills will have on the sailing and boating communities and industry in these states. Maryland: Delegate Mary Ann Carozza (R-District 38 Ocean City) 203 House Office Building 6 Bladen Street Annapolis, MD marybeth.carozza@house.state.md.us Senator James Mathias (D-District 38 Somerset, Worcester, Wicomico Counties) 216 James Senate Office Building 11 Bladen Street Annapolis, MD james.mathias@senate.state.md.us Florida: Representative Kristin Jacobs (D-District 96 - Broward County Coconut Creek) 200 House Office Building 402 South Monroe Street Tallahassee, FL Kristin.Jacobs@myfloridahouse.gov Senator Gary Farmer (D-District 34 Fort Lauderdale) 216 Senate Office Building 404 South Monroe Street Tallahassee, FL farmer.gary.web@flsenate.gov We will keep you updated on developments in both Maryland and Florida. Our goals remain to ensure that these bills do not pass in their current forms, and the safety concerns and objectives presented are addressed through other, non-regulatory means. Thank you again for your communications, concerns and encouragement. An all-new offering for 2017, this may very well be our most valuable course of the year. Even if you don't use Expedition Software but want better instrument data, this course is for you! Expedition 101 May 15 & 18, 2017 Popular since first introduced in 2013, the Expedition 101 course has been fully updated to the latest refinements of Expedition. Focusing on fundamentals, it provides a broad overview plus specific details on effective use of Expedition's features. This two session course is designed for both sailors who want to get started with Expedition and those who have used Expedition but need a "refresher". Expedition's Nick White and world class navigation and electronics expert, Artie Means, will be online in the chat room to assist during the webinar for those who have questions.
