2 Events of World War II to be commemorated Over the next four years: 75 th Anniversary of the U.S. Navy Experiences in World War II December 7, th Anniversary of The Attack on Pearl Harbor the Start of WWII Starting with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 2016 through the anniversary of the Japanese surrender onboard USS Missouri on September 2, World War II history has always been of intense interest to both our service and the country at large and for a very good reason said Naval History and Heritage Command Director Sam Cox. It was a worldwide conflict with existential consequences that continue to unfold, and it affected every American. America is a maritime nation whose security is tied to the sea and depends on a capable and credible U.S. Navy. Join us for the NYCP Football Tailgate NFL Team Support Dinner at the September General Membership Meeting on the Thursday, September 6, 2018 Grandparent s Day SEPTEMBER 2018 Commodore s Comments BILL CLARK From the Helm: Well, let me get my bragging out of the way early on. I know you all think that Donna is too young and certainly that I am too young to be great Grandparents, but we are now old enough, I know that is a shock to all of you. Aubree Grace Clark came into this world on morning of the 11 th of August. She arrived weighing in at one pound and 15 ounces and was 14 inches long. She has the same angelic look that I have. No, that is going a bit too far, but it sounds good. I did leave just prior to the start of the regatta and managed to return long before the end of the regatta. Sadly, the Lord had other plans and eight days after her birth Aubree Grace went home to be with the Lord. Sadly, many hearts were broken but the Lord certainly knows better than we know. The Commodore s Cup II ran as smoothly as could be considering the wind changes which had to alter the course and one of the boats breaking down which slowed the after party a bit. Many thanks go out to Fleet Captain John Buziak, Rear Commodore Jim Parson s, Vice Commodore Ken Pyle and many others that participated. I believe all were pleased with the great awards that were given to the winners. We really have many great members in the NYCP and another one is Molly who spends most of the time at the front gate so many of our members and participants can have access to the Crow s Nest. The After-Regatta Party was a lot of fun and fairly well attended. More of you could have come in and participated in congratulating the winners, enjoying the awards ceremony, and helped us eat all the chow that was provided. Past Commodore Kathy Champagne cooked all the dogs, Jane Parsons baked all the cookies and Ken Champagne served as a top-notch bartender. We had over 40 members at the General Membership Meeting. Many thanks to Sandy Pyle for organizing the terrific Asian Spread we had for all to enjoy. Pat Jackson was the hotshot bartender for the evening. Everything went smoothly, and a grand time was had by all. We also had several new members present which really made the evening. I went to the regular quarterly meeting of all the military organizations in the panhandle area. The meeting was well attended and the speakers for the USO for Northern Florida and the American Red Cross were very informative. The meeting is always

3 wrapped up by mingling with the crowd and finding out about new important issues. If you are interested let me know. Make certain you read the Foghorn and make yourself aware of the upcoming events. Remember, it is you that makes the Navy Yacht Club to continue to keep on rolling. Thank you. service of our country, but a free day of sailing, barbecue, music and prize raffles isn't a bad place to start. The Wounded American Veteran Event is a boating day when volunteers use their own boats to give cruises to soldiers who have been injured or disabled while serving in the armed forces. W.A.V.E., is a private, all volunteer initiative first organized by Pensacola Bay Area Yacht Clubs, to honor our nation's disabled veterans. Originated by Navy Yacht Club Pensacola, and joined by Pensacola Yacht Club, Pensacola Beach Yacht Club, Ft. Walton Yacht Club, Eglin Yacht Club and Pt. Yacht Club, W.A.V.E was the first of what has become an annual event. In 2013, W.A.V.E. became an affiliated program of the Florida Commodores Association which undertook sponsorship and encouraged the growth of the program throughout Florida. In 2014, Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club, Isles Yacht Club, Platinum Point Yacht Club, the Punta Gorda Sailing Club and the Punta Gorda Boat Club came together to launch the project on the west coast of Florida. W.A.V.E. features a sail on private boats for wounded veterans and an adult guest of their choice. The afternoon's activities include an opening ceremony with color guard, live entertainment, and a complimentary lunch and beverages. Veterans are presented with a commemorative cap. Volunteer Forms are available on the Navy Yacht Club website Please complete the form and send it to: Dana Jackson at 2706 DeSoto Street, Pensacola, FL W.A.V.E. 12 The hope and idea for the Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay and not just in your home club regattas. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue for years to come - there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 9 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 4 offshore races* only. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship. 13 Lipton Challenge, as well as GYA's 100th anniversary in A commemorative coffee table book is being produced- -focusing on the Lipton Challenge, GYA history--and a page devoted to the history of each GYA club. A letter was sent to all GYA commodores in July outlining the project. We have been asked to ascertain how many books our yacht club will commit to purchasing. We would like to inform GYA of the number of books we intend to purchase at $50 each. Please let me, Commodore Clark or GYA Rep Julie Connerley know if you would commit to purchasing one or more of the commemorative books. See the attached letter for payment options. Julie Connerley also shared the following: "It is interesting to note that of all the perpetual trophies Sir Thomas Lipton donated to various sailing organizations in the U.S., to our knowledge, the GYA is the only organization STILL competing for this historic trophy." History is being made and documented. We look forward to hearing from you if you are interested, including the number of books requested by Monday, September 27. Thank you. Ken Pyle Vice Commodore, NYCP Dear Commodore: In the year 2020 the GYA will celebrate its 100 th Anniversary, along with the 100 th sailing for the coveted Capdevielle Sir Thomas Lipton trophy. Earlier this year a committee was appointed to begin planning for these centennial events. At the Board of Directors meeting in May at Mobile Yacht Club, GYA Past Commodore Corky Potts reported on some of the plans for celebrating these centennials. Among those plans is a 9x12, 128-page, hardcover with dust jacket commemorative coffee table book depicting the history of the GYA, its member clubs and the Sir Thomas Lipton Regattas. Our organization, its clubs and the Sir Thomas Lipton Regatta is rich with history and this commemorative book will combine that history into one source. In order to determine how many books are needed, we are asking each GYA club to commit to purchasing a minimum of thirty (30) books, at a cost of $50.00 each, which can then be sold to its members. If your club membership can t support thirty books, then please consider purchasing what you can support. No commitment is too small or too large. The commemorative books will be available for pick-up at the GYA Opening Regatta at St. Andrews Bay in Payment for your commitment can be made at the Lipton Regatta this year, the 2019 Winter Meeting, in increments between now and the 2020 Opening Regatta or when the books are picked up. Payment details to follow. Your club s support of our history and the production of this commemorative book will ensure the preservation of that history for generations to come. Please give this consideration. Because of the time involved with the production of the book, we ask for your commitment by September 1, If you have questions, would like more information or to convey your commitment, please contact GYA Past Commodore Cathy Cromartie at or cathy.cromartie@gmail.com Your consideration and support are greatly appreciated. Chris Luppens GYA Commodore Navy Flying Scot Sailing Greetings! It is time to practice and prepare for the Wadewitz Regatta sailing in our club s Flying Scott. This event is held on the last weekend in September at the Fairhope Yacht Club in Fairhope, Alabama on September 29 th & 30 th. We need to have skippers to compete in this event. Please let me know if you would be interested in sailing. So far, new NYCP members Lee Brothwick and Terry Brotherton have campaigned to sail and want to get out and practice. We will be taking the boat out to practice with anyone who is interested in sailing. Let me know by or phone if you plan to practice or race. Let John, Ken or myself know if you are interested in racing on the Navy Yacht Club Flying Scot team and if you want to be part of our Flying Scot sailing effort. Thanks!! WE NEED YOU!! This is the first year that Navy Yacht Club has not sailed in the Lipton Challenge (since we do not have a Viper 640 boat which is the new Capdevielle club boat to race, nor do we have the crew to compete). In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts The term Naval aviator encompasses those who fly aircraft not only in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps but also the U.S. Coast Guard, the first officers from this service reporting to Pensacola Naval Air Station for flight training on March 30, They were 2nd Lt. Charles E. Sugden and 3rd Lt. Elmer F. Stone, the latter officer eventually becoming the Coast Guard s first aviator and the pilot of the NC-4, which in May 1919 became the first aircraft to fly the Atlantic. Viva Florida Promoting Florida s History and Culture The operation of unmanned aerial vehicles is one of the latest advancements in modern weaponry, these platforms flown by personnel located thousands of miles away from them able to scout for the enemy and deliver ordnance. In Naval aviation, experiments in unmanned flight occurred a short time after World War I. One such instance was Sept. 15, 1924, when a radio-controlled N-9 seaplane flew for 40 minutes, the fact that the flight ended with the plane sinking after an errant water landing not diminishing the progress made on that day. Pensacola Fun Fact! For any fighter pilot, the mark of excellence is shooting down five enemy aircraft in air-to-air combat to earn the title of ace. In Naval aviation, the first to achieve this feat was Lt. j.g. David S. Ingalls, who on Sept. 24, 1918, shot down his fifth aircraft in six weeks of combat while flying Sopwith Camels as an exchange pilot with the Royal Air Force. More Fun Facts! The end of an era came to Naval aviation on Jan. 31, 1981, with the retirement of Master Chief Air Controlman Robert K. Jones, the last Naval aviation pilot. The first enlisted men received flight instruction before World War I, but not until 1920 did the Navy designate the first enlisted men as Naval aviation pilots (NAP). During their service, NAPs received the nation s highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, flew in locations around the globe in both war and peace, and participated in Antarctic expeditions. The program ended in 1947, with the number of active NAPs diminishing until Jones was the final one to go over the side. During the early years of the Cold War, Naval aviation s mission requirements included long-range delivery of nuclear weapons. Some of the first aircraft assigned to carry out these flights, patrol planes were never meant to fly from a ship. On Feb. 7, 1950, one of these aircraft, a P2V-3C Neptune, launched from the carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB 42) steaming off the Florida coast. The airplane completed a 25-hour, 59-minute flight of 5,060 miles before landing in California the following day, the longest flight ever made from the deck of an aircraft carrier. Sitting in the cockpit, Capt. Frederick M. Trapnell probably couldn t help but wonder where the propeller was on the XP-59A Airacomet. Yet, there wasn t one, the aircraft in which he sat unlike any flown by a Naval aviator. On that day, April 21, 1943, Trapnell took off from the dry lake bed at Muroc, Calif., and in so doing became the first Naval aviator to ever fly a jet aircraft. 24 Iva Prosser and Barbara Chapman enjoy a shot of watermelon rum out on the Bay Predesign Public Survey for Pensacola Bay Living Shoreline Project Your input is needed: visit Escambia County has received funding from the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council as a result of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill for the design and permitting of a large-scale living shoreline project in Pensacola Bay. Public involvement is a key component of this project and the county is seeking public input about the project design. Public comments received as a result of this survey will be used by the design team to guide development of the overall conceptual design. The project will include three separate areas around NAS Pensacola (NASP): one adjacent to White Island in northwestern Pensacola Bay (north of the Bayou Grande entrance channel) and the other two on the eastern (Lake Frederic area) and southern shores (south of the Bayou Grande entrance channel) of NASP. The goal is to create 24,800 linear feet of rock and oyster reef breakwater to protect the shorelines from further erosion by reducing storm surge impacts. The project will also crate 205 acres of marsh and submerged aquatic vegetation habitat at these three sites. Living shorelines address erosion by providing long term protection, reducing wave energy and restoring vegetated shoreline habitats through strategic placement of pants, rock and oyster reefs. Living shorelines also stabilize sediment, improve water quality and enhance habitats for oysters, fish, shrimp, crabs, birds, sea turtles and other species. To take the survey, go to the Escambia County website at Looking to Crew on a boat Or Boat Owners - do you need Crew to sail.check out the Navy Yacht Club website at and sign up on the New Links posted.
