1 1 st Race Challenge And the Start of the Navy Yacht Club April, 12 th, 1931

2 2016 marks 85 Years of Navy Yacht Club HISTORY Established April 12 th, 1931 Navy Yacht Club Pensacola has a long prestigious history: Founded by flight students at NASP in 1931 Navy Cup--Originated in 1962, with the trophy provided by the US Navy. A unique team concept that was, by request of the base, part of the th Anniversary Celebration of NASP *The long running race to Isla Mujeres was only possible because of the collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation Regatta that commemorated the 75th Anniversary of Naval Aviation *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept in competitive sailing to Pensacola Bay that has been replicated by other local clubs *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots, offering military students the opportunity to compete on the water at a minimal membership cost *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have' given so much for our freedom. The originator of Wounded American Veterans Event, WAVE, is "rolling" around Florida, thanks to adoption by the Florida Commodores Association. This "Day on the Bay" is a labor of love for hosting yacht clubs In 2011, a search through vintage GOSPORTs, and collaboration with Hill Goodspeed, Naval Aviation Museum Historian, revealed the following NYCP sailors, who are most likely our founders: *A. Dixon winged in 1931 *William Masland winged in 1931 *H. Starves winged in 1931 *J.H. Smith winged in 1932 We have been entrusted with a rich legacy, for which we should feel honored to protect. Commodore s Comments From the Helm: FEBRUARY 2016 JOHN MATTHEWS Our first meeting of 2016 was well attended. We started a training presentation which was a discussion of the relationship between Navy Yacht Club Pensacola and the International Federation of Sailing (ISAF). It was well received and most members present were not totally aware of this relationship and how it works. It is my plan to continue to present topics that provide information of interest to the membership. If you would like to have a topic presented please let me know. Kim Kaminski is working on developing a special celebration of the 85 th Anniversary. In order for the celebration to come together and be successful, Kim will need several volunteers to assist her. If you are interested in helping with this project please let me know or get in touch with Kim. We have had 37 members pay their dues for It is anticipated that there are several more who will be renewing their membership. The deadline is March 1, I would like to thank all those who have renewed their membership. It shows their commitment to NYCP and growing the club and continuing its legacy on Pensacola Bay. NYCP is going to need several volunteers to serve on race committee this year. You do not have to know anything about race committee you just need to be willing to serve. We will train you and make sure that you enjoy serving. If you have an interest in learning more about race committee, regattas, and racing please let Barry Pokorney, Jim Parsons, Bob Sutton or me know and we will make it happen. I am looking forward to another great year for Navy Yacht Club Pensacola. There are a lot of members that are working hard to ensure that it is a great year. Please get involved so it will be. All sailors have something in common the importance of keeping sailing vibrant and strong for future generations. Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for this new Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay in 2016, not just in your home club regattas. There would be 12 or so regattas in the series and maybe only 8 or 9 would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 3 or 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. There s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc. (Possibly even inshore and offshore divisions). All the details are to be worked out in time for the New Year so be sure to note the Pensacola Bay Championship Series on your sailing calendar in 2016! (See schedule on the left.0

4 Vice s Verses Bob Sutton Hello All, First I would like to welcome back the returning members. It is good to see so many want this club to continue. I hope we get more to re-sign up before the March 1 st deadline to save money, and remain members. It is never an easy thing to increase Dues but I think the Commodore is doing what needs to be done to make NYCP strong and self-sustaining. I would also like to ask for your help to become volunteers for the different committees that the club has, WE NEED YOUR HELP!! Moving to another subject, I talked with the base security Boss and we couldn t come to any agreement on how to get non ID card members on the Base. The policy has also changed for visitors to the base. Visitors must now go to the West gate for access. We can still have a sponsor at the main gate or when this big security inspection is over at the end of February - we may be able to work a Vetted list to get members on base. So I continue to work with my committee to find a home for NYCP off-base. I have been looking into the closed KFC on the corner of Navy and Gulf Beach and after some phone calls found out it is for sale. I will be looking inside the building to see if it is something we can work with, prime location to put a nice Italian restaurant in. It has been a very busy month for me so I didn t get a chance to get my committee together but will get back on track this month. I am still working on the Marcello s effort also. One last pitch for Molly, Membership is all of the member s responsibility. To grow we need the help of all the members. So go out and find new members and bring them home!! Most of the discussion revolved around issues regarding the implementation of the Viper 640 as the Capdevielle competition boat beginning in For 2016 and 2017 the flying scot will still be the boat we'll sail for the series, although they're planning a GYA sanctioned Viper class at a limited number of regattas to allow clubs to get used to sailing it. Whether we ever get one or not is something that will have to be dealt with in the future. The cost is anywhere from $35K for a new one to somewhere in the $20K range for used ones. The beginning of the GYA Capdevielle schedule is a little different this year. Our first race will be the Spring Regatta at Buccaneer YC on May, with the Opening Regatta at Fairhope not until May. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any info about GYA. Any questions ask Dick! The Gulf Yachting Association s Annual Winter Meeting was held on January 8 th thru the 10 th at the Fairhope Yacht Club. The GYA finalized the regatta schedule for 2016 and the new updates to the schedule have been added to the calendar. One of the new items that have been added is the GYA Sportboat Championship and Interclub Series. This series has been created to help transition the use of the Viper 640 into the interclub racing schedule by Our Capdevielle racing in the Flying Scot will still be going strong and we will need your help and participation. The Gulf Yachting Association Sportboat Championship and Interclub Series will be sailed in the years 2016 and 2017 in parallel with the 2016 and 2017 Capdevielle Series, as outlined herein, for the purpose of introducing and transitioning the Viper 640 as the GYA Interclub Boat effective in GYA Sportboat Championship & Interclub Series Regatta Dates GYA Opening Fairhope Yacht Club Meigs Regatta Ft Walton Yacht Club Weatherly Regatta Gulfport Yacht Club Sugar Bowl Regatta - Southern Yacht Club 2017 Regatta Dates Mardi Gras Regatta - New Orleans Yacht Club GYA Opening Gulfport Yacht Club Candler Regatta St Andrews Bay Yacht Club Meigs Regatta Ft Walton Yacht Club Summer Regatta Mobile Yacht Club Weatherly Regatta Gulfport Yacht Club Wadewitz Regatta Fairhope Yacht Club Sugar Bowl Race of Champions New Orleans Yacht Club Please be sure to check the Navy Yacht Club website: for all of the yacht club news such as upcoming meetings, sign-up for activities or sailboat crew, information about the club and notice of races as well as other contact information. 7 Where in the world is the NYCP Burgee? This is a variation of the Where s Waldo drawings that were popular several years ago. Basically members of the club for the next year submit pictures to the Social Committee - which have the Burgee or our license plate somewhere in the photograph. Pictures can be submitted at any time electronically or dropping them off at one of the club events to any member of the social committee. Each month the social committee will review the picture(s) submitted and selection of one along with a runner-up which is unique and would be of the most interest to the entire club to submit to the Foghorn. Monthly winners will be reviewed and voted on by the social committee and the club membership prior to the 85 th Anniversary Social. Based on the number of applicants a 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd place winner will be announced at the Anniversary event. Club members or their guests are eligible to participate.
