2 2016 marks 85 Years of Navy Yacht Club HISTORY Established April 12 th, 1931 Navy Yacht Club Pensacola has a long prestigious history: Founded by flight students at NASP in 1931 Navy Cup--Originated in 1962, with the trophy provided by the US Navy. A unique team concept that was, by request of the base, part of the th Anniversary Celebration of NASP *The long running race to Isla Mujeres was only possible because of the collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation Regatta that commemorated the 75th Anniversary of Naval Aviation *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept in competitive sailing to Pensacola Bay that has been replicated by other local clubs *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots, offering military students the opportunity to compete on the water at a minimal membership cost *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have' given so much for our freedom. The originator of Wounded American Veterans Event, WAVE, is "rolling" around Florida, thanks to adoption by the Florida Commodores Association. This "Day on the Bay" is a labor of love for hosting yacht clubs In 2011, a search through vintage GOSPORTs, and collaboration with Hill Goodspeed, Naval Aviation Museum Historian, revealed the following NYCP sailors, who are most likely our founders: *A. Dixon winged in 1931 *William Masland winged in 1931 *H. Starves winged in 1931 *J.H. Smith winged in 1932 We have been entrusted with a rich legacy, for which we should feel honored to protect. APRIL 2016 Commodore s Comments JOHN MATTHEWS From the Helm: Navy Yacht Club Pensacola will be celebrating our 85 th Anniversary of its founding by a very small group of Naval Aviators. We have an established history and legacy as a very active yacht club on Pensacola Bay. NYCP helped create Regata al Sol race to Isla Mujeres by providing one of the two crews that race to Mexico aboard one of two sailboats which were provided by the CO, NASP. The race was successful and as a result has led to a race that has been in existence continuously since NYCP crews actually won a silver tray for racing in Regata al Sol III which NYCP still has in its possession. NYCP was given a large silver plated trophy by the CO, NASP to be awarded to the winning yacht club in the Navy Cup regatta, which NYCP has hosted successfully since its inception. NYCP is the current holder of the trophy. NYCP also hosted a very successful Bikini Regatta which was instituted by Past Commodore Lloyd Stagg and his wife Beverly to encourage more participation in racing by female skippers and crews. In addition, NYCP was instrumental in establishing the Wounded American Veterans Event, aka WAVE, to honor our wounded American veterans with a Day on the Bay. The club has faced several challenges during his history and we are still a very viable yacht club with a membership that enjoys all the activities we host. As a yacht club we have an impressive history and legacy. Our history and legacy can only continue if the membership supports our efforts to insure that NYCP stays active and healthy as an organization and continues to grow for the future. To accomplish this objective the membership must be committed to the financial growth and sustainability that the club needs. Without this commitment, the club will face certain demise as a viable yacht club and a contributing organization in the yachting community especially on Pensacola Bay and in the Gulf Yachting Association. Under the leadership of Vice Commodore Bob Sutton and the facilities committee, we are in the process of identifying a facility and location that will provide NYCP with a workable option to continue our mission as a yacht club and provide the opportunity to add new members and provide existing members with a place that will meet our needs for the immediate future and create a foundation for long term viability as a strong yachting organization. There will be a time in the near future when a formal plan will be presented to the membership for consideration and approval that will provide NYCP a path that enables the

3 club to continue its success as a yacht club and a major player in the yachting and local community. When the plan is presented, I will ask for your serious review and consideration as we consider the pros and cons of the plan. It will rest upon the vote of the general membership to determine whether or not NYCP will grow or slowly fade out of existence. It will be a tough choice for us regardless. Vice s Verses Bob Sutton 2016 NYCP Racing Calendar April 16, 2016 Commodore s Cup #2 /85th Anniversary Regatta (Bay Champ #5) June 11-12, th Annual Navy Cup Regatta July 9, th Annual Bikini Regatta September 24, 2016 Commodore s Cup #3 (Bay Champ #10) October 29, 2016 Commodore s Cup #4 / Veteran Regatta NYCP FACILITY COMMITTEE: Chairman Vice Commodore Bob Sutton Members: Barry Pokorney, Don Robinson, Jim Parsons, Ellen Costigan, Liz Richbourg, Marcia Cooper and Beverly Stagg (alternate) Hello All, I would like to bring you up to date on the move to get a new Yacht club location off the base. As I told you last month the Bridge was going to look at the Grunge Bar - The Bridge had a meeting and a viewing of the property. The Bridge was up to bringing this information to the membership. This was the first real look at moving off the base and into our own home. After the Bridge gave me a thumbs up for investigating, the Commodore asked me to get some cost numbers from the owner. Here are my findings, He communicated that he wanted $1, for rent but that was negotiable. I used $ as my number for figuring purposes. Electric $ to $ in the hot months, I used $ Water $30.00, dumpster $90.00, Cable/phone $40.00 and $ for insurance. This total came to $1, a month or $19, the normal monthly Club expenses you get $24, a year. I went to the income next and with a quarter in the books I broke down a monthly income + the Dues for a year I came up with $15, total income. Now this is only an estimate but it shows a loss of $8, for the year. I took the numbers to the bridge meeting and they agreed that this was too much risk at this time. This will be brought to the membership on the 7 th of April to see what they want to do but it is pretty clear at this time we need more capital to make a move off-base happen. I still 100% back the vision that the Commodore has, moving off the base to increase membership and become self sufficient. I will not stop looking for places to call home but I think it may take some time to get there. I still look forward to all ideas that the membership may have to help in the effort to find a new home. Let s move to some fun things now. It is going to be a very fun filled Month of April. On the 7 th is the General membership meeting. Next I am sponsoring a champagne social for the marina to try to draw in some new members on April 10 th, come out and help in the effort. We continue

5 with the Regatta on the 16 th and than on Sunday the 17 th is the PYC sponsored, Blessing of the Fleet. How does the first half of April look? As always I want to put a plea out for member participation in all events. This is the only way that this club has a chance of making it for another 85 years. After a meeting or activity at the Crow s Nest - Please remember to wipe down your tables and return the chairs back to their original set-up (four chairs to each table) Thank you. rrsutton01@cox.net (662) Bob Sutton Vice Commodore We are looking for volunteers to help with our social activities if you would like to help cook, bartend, cleanup or help provide assistance please contact Kathy Champagne Don t Forget! We are also looking for a flyer designer to replace Susan (who did a fantastic job last year). If you are interested in helping with any of these events in 2016 please contact me - Kathy Champagne. Kathy Champagne kathychampagne@bellsouth.net Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for this new Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay in 2016, not just in your home club regattas. There would be 12 or so regattas in the series and maybe only 8 or 9 would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 3 or 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. There s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc. (Possibly even inshore and offshore divisions). All the details are to be worked out in time for the New Year so be sure to note the Pensacola Bay Championship Series on your sailing calendar in 2016! 2016 Pensacola Bay Championship Series Apr 16 CC#2 /85 th Anniversary NYCP (Bay Champ #5) May 7 Sea Buoy PBYC (Bay Champ #6) May 21 Cancer Society Regatta PYC (Bay Champ #7) Jun Gulf port-pensacola GYC/PYC (Bay Champ #8) Sep 3 Pcola Bch Pier and Back PBYC (Bay Champ #9) Sep 24 CC #3 NYCP (Bay Champ #10) Oct 1 Lost Bay PtYC (Bay Champ #11) Oct WFORC PYC (Bay Champ #12)

10 Where in the world is the NYCP Burgee? This is a variation of the Where s Waldo drawings that were popular several years ago. Basically members of the club for the next year submit pictures to the Social Committee - which have the Burgee or our license plate somewhere in the photograph. Pictures can be submitted at any time electronically or dropping them off at one of the club events to any member of the social committee. Each month the social committee will review the picture(s) submitted and selection of one along with a runner-up which is unique and would be of the most interest to the entire club to submit to the Foghorn. Monthly winners will be reviewed and voted on by the social committee and the club membership prior to the 85 th Anniversary Social. Based on the number of applicants a 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd place winner will be announced at the Anniversary event. Club members or their guests are eligible to participate. When the plane returned to Earth, it marked the establishment of a new time-to-climb world record. Including previous recordsetting flights, the Phantom II on that day owned eight time-to-climb marks. Pensacola Fun Fact! On April 2, 1931, the Navy issued a contract to Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation for production of the prototype for a new fighter, the XFF-1. Nicknamed Fifi when production models entered service, the aircraft was revolutionary in the fact that it incorporated retractable landing gear, the first Navy aircraft to do so. It also marked the first successful fighter design by Grumman, with the World War II era F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat and the venerable F-14 Tomcat among the aircraft the company eventually produced. More Fun Facts! On April 1, 1943, the Navy commissioned an air station that had been constructed on a section of real estate in rural Maryland that was far removed from population centers. It took its name from a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay that bordered it, the Patuxent River. Those who served there would forever come to know the air station as Pax River, home of the Navy s flight testing and test pilot school and for many a Naval astronaut, the gateway to outer space. Florida Humanities Council invites you: For more information: Enjoy our events around the state! Viva Florida Fun Fact As the Nation s First settlement attempt, the Pensacola Bay Area plays a significant role in over 500 years of history that helped to create the State of Florida. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts The Space Shuttle program has through triumph and tragedy been the staple of U.S. space exploration for three decades, its momentous beginning occurring on April 12, 1981, when Columbia blasted off from Cape Kennedy.
