Fall Sailing on Pensacola Bay

2016 marks 85 Years of Navy Yacht Club HISTORY Established April 12 th, 1931 Navy Yacht Club Pensacola has a long prestigious history: Founded by flight students at NASP in 1931 Navy Cup--Originated in 1962, with the trophy provided by the US Navy. A unique club competition concept that was, by request of the base, part of the th Anniversary Celebration of NASP *The race to Isla Mujeres celebrating over 50 years was only possible because of the collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation Regatta that commemorated the 75th Anniversary of Naval Aviation *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept in female competitive sailing to Pensacola Bay that has been replicated by other local clubs *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots, offering military students the opportunity to compete on the water at a minimal membership cost *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have' given so much for our freedom. The originator of Wounded American Veterans Event, WAVE, is "rolling" around Florida, thanks to adoption by the Florida Commodores Association. This "Day on the Bay" is a labor of love for hosting yacht clubs NYCP supports the Dan Smith Memorial Youth Sailing Scholarship In 2011, Kathy Champagne searched through vintage GOSPORTs, and collaborated with Hill Goodspeed, Naval Aviation Museum Historian, to reveal the following NYCP sailors, who are most likely our founders: *A. Dixon winged in 1931 *William Masland winged in 1931 *H. Starves winged in 1931 *J.H. Smith winged in 1932 We have been entrusted with a rich legacy, for which we should feel honored to protect. NOVEMBER 2016 Commodore s Comments JOHN MATTHEWS From the Helm: The November General Membership meeting will be a busy event as it is the last general membership meeting for Our December meeting which is the Commodore s Ball on Friday, December 2, is not a business meeting but a celebration for Navy Yacht Club Pensacola and its membership. I encourage all members to mark their calendar for that event and plan on coming. During our November meeting we will be considering the following actions and voting on them. First, we will receive the report of the Nominating Committee for recommendations on the officers for the coming year There will be an opportunity for receiving nominations from the floor prior to the vote. As a reminder, only those dues paying members have the privilege of voting. PC Kathy Champagne, Nominating Committee Chair, will present the list of Nominees. Second, as indicated at the last general membership meeting, we will be voting on the issue of the proposed move to the American Legion Post 33 facility for our future meetings. Vice Commodore Sutton will present all the information we have on this proposed move. Be sure you plan to attend to vote on this very important issue. Third, we will be considering the nominations for the various awards that NYCP traditionally gives out at the Commodores Ball. A complete list of these awards is found in this issue of the Foghorn. In addition, those members with an address should have already received a list of these awards to review. In addition, I will be asking the membership to consider volunteering to work on the Navy Cup requirements for It is absolutely essential that we get started on the project as soon as we can. The success of the Navy Cup depends on the commitment made by the membership to the various requirements. The Navy Cup Regatta is a long-standing tradition for NYCP and we do not want it to be any less successful than it has in the past.

The dues structure for 2017 will be reviewed and all members who are planning to renew their membership will be encourage to pay their dues prior to the end of 2016 so the new Bridge will be able to begin the year with adequate funds for operation. All members are encouraged and requested to pay their 2017 dues separate from any payment for the Commodore s Ball. This makes the record keeping easier for the Treasurer, the Membership Chair and the Vice Commodore. The Vice Commodore will also give the details on the Commodore s Ball which is scheduled for Saturday, December 2, at Pensacola Yacht Club. The cost of the Ball remains the same as last year but several enhancements can be expected. Invitations to the Ball will be sent out the first week of November. We will have musical entertainment which will permit dancing for all. Please make your plans to attend the Ball. We will be installing our new officers and directors for 2017 so make your reservations to attend. I want to encourage each and every one of you to go to the polls and vote for the candidates of your choice for national, state, and local positions. This is a privilege and a right we all enjoy as American citizens. It is the foundation of our freedom which all of us enjoy and for which many of us have served as members of our Armed Forces in conflicts which helped this country maintain these freedoms. We all know those that made their ultimate sacrifice for this freedom and as such we should not ignore this sacrifice by not voting. 19 Turkey Trot - PBYC Great Oaks Regatta SYC 22 NYCP Bridge Meeting Ferguson Airport USODA Opti Midwinters SYC NYCP = Navy Yacht Club PBYC = Pensacola Beach Yacht Club PYC = Pensacola Yacht Club FYC = Fairhope Yacht Club PCYC = Pass Christian Yacht Club SYC = Southern Yacht Club The Navy Yacht Club will now be using the US Sailing Regatta Network, powered by Regatta Network.com For all race registrations visit to obtain registration the link. 5 We are looking for next year s NYCP board officers if you are interested in holding a position on the Navy Yacht Club Board please notify one of the current officers regarding your interest. I look forward to seeing all of you there. This is a way to thank the Commodore for the great year we have had. Navy Yacht Club Election Day November 3 rd rrsutton01@cox.net (662) Bob Sutton Vice Commodore Presidential Election Day November 8th NYCP FACILITY COMMITTEE: Chairman Vice Commodore Bob Sutton Members: Barry Pokorney, Don Robinson, Jim Parsons, Ellen Costigan, Liz Richbourg, Marcia Cooper and Beverly Stagg (alternate) Vice s Verses Bob Sutton Hello All, I want to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving and hope you all have a great day with family and friends. The year is slowly coming to an end so it s time to look back and see what we have accomplished this year as a Club. We started the year off a little slow with a loss of about 1/3 to 1/2 of the membership due to, for the most part, dues increase. As the year has moved on we have gained some of that back in new members. This is a positive thing for the future of the Club. I only hope the new members are ready to step up and volunteer for committees in the New Year. At the request of the Commodore I was tasked with trying to find a place to call home off-base. I spent a lot of time this year looking for just that, five different properties were looked into with only two making it to the bridge for discussion. I have come to the conclusion that there is a lot more work to do and a lot more money to be put away before any move off-base should take place, if we are going to call it home. Now if what we are looking for is a place to increase off-base members then Post 33 is a great idea. I do however think that a move off-base will take away a large part of our mission which is to have relations with the commands. We all have a decision to make on November 3 rd so please come to the meeting and vote. The last Regatta of the year is rescheduled for Saturday the 5 th of November so come out and support the Navy Yacht Club Pensacola and have some fun. The NYCP Commodores Ball is scheduled for Friday 2 December at the Pensacola Yacht Club. The invitations are in the mail please make sure you return them to me with payment by November 20 th. We will have a live band and good food so come join the party. Social Committee Notes By Kathy Champagne The Social Committee helps with Membership meetings, Regattas and Special Events. 17 Where in the W rld is the NYCP Burgee? This is a variation of the Where s Waldo drawings that were popular several years ago. Basically members of the club can submit pictures - to the Social Committee - which have the Burgee or our license plate somewhere in the photograph. Pictures can be submitted at any time electronically or dropping them off at one of the club events to any member of the social committee. Each month the social committee will review the picture(s) submitted and selection of one along with a runner-up which is unique and would be of the most interest to the entire club to submit to the Foghorn. Club members or their guests are eligible to participate. Word is we will be here another day to let the fellow from Royal Flush repair the head. And perhaps wait on John to rejoin for an additional day. We are watching Matthew as any prudent sailor would. Most of our journey should be away from a projected path. But who knows the mind of a Hurricane. We plan on crossing Florida via Lake Okeechobee then heading to India Shores near St Pete and a few days at a time share we own. Then up to Tarpon Springs where Rainer will depart and off to our final leg of the journey and Home Port...Perdido Bay and Pensacola. Keep praying...we are not home yet. Fair winds and following seas. PS We made a friend. The first picture is of Gunter. He has a Trawler and is coming south. We have had a few social gatherings including him making us Apple Pancakes on his boat and we in turn made Jambalaya for him when he came to ours. He says he may come and visit us in Pensacola when he ventures that far west some day. Check out the continuation of Frank Bean s Journey on his boat Sandshark Frank Bean and the Journey of the Sand Shark -Part 2 And the Adventure continues. Frank Bean in St. Augustine Been remiss the last few days. We left Charleston SC and headed out into the Atlantic fighting a rising tide. Beating into waves is not the most enjoyable thing a boat can do. Well we sailed with a NE wind all day and all night. The weather turned bad and it rained with lots of lightning most of the night. We took turns sailing, motoring and motor sailing. The first light of dawn was the most wonderful sight that I can recall of recent. We sloshed our way into Amelia Island, fighting current all the way...typical. Spent a wonderful day ashore. Replenished some food and beer stocks, showered, washed clothes and had a snack at a local pub via Rainer and his kindness. Then back to the boat where I whipped up some Tortellini with Chicken and Alfredo Sauce. No complaints. Then we left there and headed for St Augustine and Rivers Edge Marina where we are tied up presently. Had a nice meal at Hurricane Patty's and talked way too late and fell in our bunks came early and the 50 yard dash to the outhouse. Mike made coffee and we are checking around to find someone to rebuild the head so it will flush. Not fun when it won't. John Novick went ashore in Charleston and is scheduled to rejoin us here in St Augustine today. But no word from him since he left us Sunday. Another water hose came loose (loosened hose clamp), while we were motoring yesterday and we pumped our water tank into the bilge. Not the first time. Filled it up again at the Marina. Shake down cruise is all I can add. Frank Bean Still in St. Augustine Well we are waiting on parts to arrive for the head so it will finally flush. I guess in the words of Randy Quaid in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation...I should have checked the Shi er earlier. This will enable us to anchor out more. Rivers Edge Marina had bicycles for free loan out. They had been rode hard previously. My seat was loose and kept riding up causing my butt to slide off. But I managed. Mike made it a block and his

wheel loosened and he came to halt when the chain came off. He retired to the boat while Rainer and I moved on to downtown St Augustine. Now we have done very little sightseeing on this voyage, our intent to move the boat in a timely and efficient manner. But with the Head issue an opportunity arose. So it was off to see the oldest city in America. A tour of the Fort...Its construction, history and importance were explained by a Park Ranger. Then we were off on a bike tour of old downtown. Damn seat. I had begun to remember how to manipulate a bicycle on a crowded street with pedestrians in close proximity. (Without striking any) Had a few close calls, No arrests though. Had a cool libation, listened to a guitar player was asked for spare change from an inebriated fellow and finally settled on a piece of pizza. Then it was off to the boat again. We arrived in Vero Beach with no good anchoring alternative so we took a mooring at the City's Marina. $16.50 plus we all had showers. We motored and sailed all day without incident. (No breakdowns). We even had the sails up. It was a good day. Tomorrow or the next, John Baron will join us again for the trip across the Okeechobee waterway to Ft Myers. Frank Bean Left Vero Beach Left Vero Beach this AM heading for Port St Lucie and Lake Okeechobee and the cut across Florida. Picking up John Baron for the Lake route. Watching Matthew with anxious anticipation. Keep praying. Hurricane Matthew and Sandshark We are in Palm Habor, Florida awaiting a surveyor and possible repairs to Sand Shark. That said we can tell the tale. We left the Okeechobee waterway at Ft Myers and dropped off John Baron again. (We picked him up in Stuart, Fl and he made the trip. He also brought food and drinks with him. What a guy). Before we did we topped off water and fuel and emptied all the important other tanks. We headed out into the Gulf and the wind slowly moved from East to Northeast and on to our nose. We began beating and pounding, the wind on our nose all the way to just off Bradenton Florida. Rainer noticed around 4 am our port ama was lower in the water, I went below to my berth and there was water above the floor boards. I pulled other boards and sure enough the bilge was full and getting fuller. My first thought was we breached the hull. Second was a hose broke in the engine compartment and we were letting water in through a thru hull. Nope that wasn't it. I checked. Well John Novick pulled the hatch open on the port ama and she was full of water. He jumped into the Ama and began to aggressively to bail with a 5 gallon bucket. The bilge pump overwhelmed we used the hand pump emptying 5 gallon bucket after 5 gallon bucket. I was at the helm fighting wind waves and throwing the water overboard in five gallon buckets only later to discover that some of it went into Rainer's berth open port lights. Where is all this water coming from? I tasted it and it was salty so I knew that it was not a water tank leak. We stopped pumping the bilge and the water was still rising. I went to the front of the boat. I pulled the shower door open and looked past the bulkhead and there is water between the bridge deck and our boat. It can only be from the ama but it was pumped almost empty. Outside I went forward and the two sections in the port Ama are not continuous. Opening the hatch it was full. The back section was empty. I began bailing with a 5 gallon bucket. That lowered the water and finally stopped flowing into the boat. We knew from then, we would not sink. Clearing the water from everywhere we turned towards land and collective we said ICW. We went due East and right into and thru the Longboat Key Bridge. Headed north on the ICW to Marker One Marina and into the gracious arms of the Blombergs. Joni has been so gracious and hospitable to us way faring Orphans, feeding us and taking us places, it is almost better than being home. Saturday we moved the boat to a perspective repair facility in Tarpon Springs. Marpro. There is a fellow there that was around when Sand Shark's keel was originally laid. He knows the Cornithian design class and understands where the damage is and as he discussed how to make her safe and seaworthy again. Today (Sunday) we go back to the Shark and take down her Jib, since we rubbed some stitching off on the spreader and need it repaired. Get the last of our grub and cooler and special items and head to Pensacola. We will have to wait for a few weeks until our number is called and the visit from the Marine Adjusters from Boat US finishes their protocol. All the remaining crew insists on finishing the trip so we will have more to share and in the mean time I will send more pictures to share of our journey. Your prayers worked. But don't stop yet. We are not at home port. Thank you all for caring and concern. You know the Navy Yacht club wants to greet us on our arrival. Won't that be just grand. My heart will be with you but my body is still moving the boat. I am unsure if I will be there for the meeting. Most likely not. I am still proudly flying our clubs burgee. I hope all things

are fine with you, your family and my yacht club family. Can t wait to see you at a meeting. Best regards, Frank, The Capt and Crew Aboard the SV Sand Shark moving towards home. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts It was a combat unique in Naval aviation history up until that time, the roar of radial engines filling the air as two aircraft twisted and turned in aerial combat replaced by a different sound. On Nov. 9, 1950, a Navy jet aircraft for the first time engaged an enemy jet in air-to-air combat. Flying an F9F Panther, Lt. Cmdr. William T. Amen shot down a MiG-15 in the skies over Korea. 20 The dedication of a new airfield at Pensacola Naval Air Station on Nov. 2, 1951, signaled a technological shift in the training of Naval aviators in the Cradle of Naval Aviation. Named after Adm. Forrest P. Sherman, who died suddenly the previous July while serving as Chief of Naval Operations, the field would welcome the first jet training aircraft, the buzzing of propeller planes familiar to Pensacolians, now complemented by thundering roars. Pensacola Fun Fact! It represented a marriage between a weapon and an aircraft, the F-14 Tomcat fighter capable of long-range interception of Soviet aircraft approaching a U.S. carrier battle group, its reach extended by AIM-54 Phoenix missiles carried on board. On Nov. 21, 1973, this amazing weapons system aircraft and missile reached a milestone when, during a test over the Pacific Ocean, an F-14 for the first time launched a full arsenal of six Phoenix missiles, with four striking home, exploding target drones at ranges of 50 miles. More Fun Facts! The space capsule drifted toward the water beneath an expansive parachute until it splashed into the Atlantic Ocean some 600 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral, where it has blasted into orbit four days earlier. Within minutes, SH-3A Sea King helicopters from the carrier Wasp (CVS 18) hoisted two astronauts aboard, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. and Naval aviator James A. Lovell Jr., their flight, which concluded on Nov. 15, 1966, the last of Project Gemini. Next came Apollo and the moon. The great amphibious invasions in North Africa and Europe were not as dependent upon Naval aviation as those in the Pacific Theater during World War II. However, on Nov. 8, 1942, when Allied forces went ashore in North Africa as part of Operation Torch, among the aircraft in the air supporting them were planes from three escort carriers, with another baby flattop used to transport and then launch 78 Army Air Forces fighter planes to an airfield on shore. The Navy s first flying boat designs were born on the shores of Lake Keuka in Hammondsport, N.Y., the hometown of pioneer aircraft manufacturer Glenn H. Curtiss. These type aircraft remained a part of Naval aviation through two world wars and in Cold War battlegrounds, the last Navy flying boat, an SP-5B Marline now on display in the National Naval Aviation Museum, making the last operational flight of a Navy seaplane on Nov. 6, citrus growers, ranchers and cowboys, industrialists, quirky individualists, you name it.
