2 Events of World War II to be commemorated Over the next four years: 75 th Anniversary of the U.S. Navy Experiences in World War II December 7, th Anniversary of The Attack on Pearl Harbor the Start of WWII Starting with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 2016 through the anniversary of the Japanese surrender onboard USS Missouri on September 2, World War II history has always been of intense interest to both our service and the country at large and for a very good reason said Naval History and Heritage Command Director Sam Cox. It was a worldwide conflict with existential consequences that continue to unfold, and it affected every American. America is a maritime nation whose security is tied to the sea and depends on a capable and credible U.S. Navy. Our Current Past Commodore Bob Sutton and wife Renee And Our new Commodore Bill Clark and wife Donna JANUARY 2017 Commodore s Comments BILL CLARK From the Helm: What a wonderful and productive year we had in I want to personally thank Past Commodore Bob Sutton and his beautiful wife Renee for all the direction, hard work, and long hours they spent in making the NYCP a more successful organization. I know that whenever I needed something he was right there to help me or give me good advice. Needless to say, don t worry, they aren t going anywhere. I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and that your Santa Claus was able to fit down your chimney. I hope that due to the shrinking of clothing due to the colder weather that you did not eat too much and compound the shrinking matter. I know many of you travelled and so I trust you had good trips and found family and friends in good health. As for me, it was the usual lump of coal. Oh well, maybe next year I will get this behaving thing down but I doubt it. By now the year has ended and we are into January as I am writing in December. The Commodore s Ball was fantastic as we had over eighty in attendance. The Ladies went all out and looked absolutely fabulous. The men were certainly more handsome than they were all year. There was a little silver hair in attendance but no one would have known it with all the dancing and partying going on. Everyone again enjoyed the Platinum Premier Band. Wasn t it great to see so many Past Commodores in attendance? If you missed this festive occasion you need to go ahead right now and RSVP for next year. Also, if you attended this event, and you most certainly had a grand time, you also might as well as plan on attending next year. We had our first Bridge meeting in late December and we are looking forward to facing new challenges as well as old ones. Our greatest challenge is up to you for the most part and that is in bringing in new members. I guess if we bring in enough new members we could become quite wealthy as a club. By then, however, we would have to move out of the Crow s Nest. We also need more participation with the members we do have. Not just in the monthly dinner meetings but also in supporting the Regattas and showing up for the award ceremonies and the after parties. We are looking forward to many exciting regattas and especially winning back the Navy Cup, and eating regatta dogs and sailing chips. We are going to be staying at the Crow s Nest and have no intention in moving to another location. I, along with our Vice Commodore Ken Pyle, intend to work with the NAS Commanding Officer in conjunction with the office of Matt Gaetz. We have the ball moving there but it is a very slow process and their recommendation is to work with the Base. Hopefully, sooner than later, we will meet somewhere in the middle. You will see the dates soon in the Foghorn. For the most part they will be as usual on the first Thursday of the month at 1730 (5:30 pm) at the Crow s Nest.

3 The Gulf Yachting Association Winter Meeting is scheduled to be held on January 13 th -14 th at the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans. There will be several members of the Navy Yacht Club Pensacola attending and we are looking forward to a very informative meeting and a good time in fellowship with other members. Happiness, Joy, and Best Wishes to all of you in the New Year. PS. I made it through the first Bridge meeting last night and nobody was mean to me like Past Commodore Kathy told me they would be. I was kinda disappointed. Oh well, there will be plenty of chances. We will have people at the Main Gate to assist with base access should you not have appropriate identification. We need your help recruiting new members, as well as encouraging current or former members to come to a meeting to see what all the shouting is about. Please consider joining us to see if we can help you find a way to serve. But most of all, we would love to have you be a part of the Fun at NYCP. Our first race will be Maxine #1 (Commodore s Cup #1) on March 3, The remaining NYCP racing schedule (proposed) will appear elsewhere in this issue of the Foghorn. The Fleet Captains from NYCP, PYC and PBYC met in late November to coordinate the 2017 Pensacola Bay racing schedule. Individually, we submitted our schedules to GYA in December. The GYA winter meetings will be held at Southern Yacht Club January 13-14, 2018 where, among other things, the final racing schedule will be reviewed and approved. We do not anticipate any conflicts so look for the final schedule of races to be published in the February Foghorn. We can always use additional people to assist with putting on the regattas. If you would like to be trained to help out either on Race Committee or other duties, please let me know. 10 The hope and idea for the Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay and not just in your home club regattas. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue for years to come - there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 9 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 4 offshore races* only. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship. There s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc Proposed Pensacola Bay Championship Series Feb 17 Valentine Regatta PBYC (Bay Champ #1) Mar 3 Maxine #1/CC#1 NYCP (Bay Champ #2) Mar 10 Maxine #2 /Rites of Spring PBYC (Bay Champ #3) Mar 24 Maxine #3 PYC (Bay Champ #4) Apr 14 CC#2 NYCP (Bay Champ #5) Apr 28 Sea Buoy PBYC (Bay Champ #6) May 5 Cancer Society Regatta PYC (Bay Champ #7) Jun Gulf port-pensacola GYC/PYC (Bay Champ #8) Sep 8 Pcola Bch Pier and Back PBYC (Bay Champ #9) Sep 22 CC #3 NYCP (Bay Champ #10) Oct 6 Lost Bay PtYC (Bay Champ #11) Oct WFORC PYC (Bay Champ #12) US Sailing GYA Regional/District/National/World Events Jan Feb 3-4 Feb Feb 26-Mar 2 Mar Mar Apr Apr 27-May 4 Jun Jun 9-10 Jun Jul Aug Aug Sep 1-3 Oct Oct Women s Regattas 2018 GYA Winter Meeting USODA Valentine J70 Midwinter Championship Thistle Midwinter s Alfonso Sutter D-14 Laser Champs Winter Lightning Championship Wetafest Regatta del Sol al Sol Area D Quarter Finals Navy Cup GYA Offshore Challenge Cup Jr Lipton Championship Knost Championship Galloway GYA Sunfish/Laser Champ Lipton Challenge Viper North American GYA Fish Championship Mar - Fleur de Lis SYC / NOYC / LPWSA July 21 - Bikini Regatta NYCP July 29 Fast Women PtYC (suggested date) Aug GYA Knost Regatta - PCYC Oct - Pink Ribbon SYC / NOYC / LPWSA GYA (Gulf Yachting Association) Activities Julie Connerley Hello All, January hosts the GYA Winter Meeting where the 2018 racing schedules, new rules and GYA activity information is compiled for the New Year. 16 More Fun Facts! The weapons hanging beneath the fuselages of the AD Skyraiders flying from the deck of the aircraft carrier Princeton (CV 37) had been built to sink ships, but on May 1, 1951, their target was not a seagoing vessel. Instead, the pilots had orders to drop their torpedoes against the gates of the Hwachon Dam, their success of this mission on that day causing the waters of the Pukhan River in South Korea to rise and impede the movement of enemy forces. One of the squadrons involved was VA-195, which adopted a new nickname that it still carries today as VFA-195 the Dambusters. Viva Florida Fun Fact As the Nation s First settlement attempt, the Pensacola Bay Area plays a significant role in over 500 years of history that helped to create the State of Florida. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts For the crew of the light carrier Saipan (CVL 48), the 16 aircraft hoisted aboard on May 1, 1948, were like none that they had ever seen, with no propeller visible on them anywhere. In the coming days, the sailors would hear a different roar as well, the familiar sounds of radial engines replaced by the thunder of jets. By May 5, the FH-1 Phantoms and pilots of Fighter Squadron (VF) 17A had completed their work on board the ship, becoming the first carrier qualified jet squadron in the history of U.S. Naval aviation. Viva Florida Promoting Florida s History and Culture The flight in some respects was not unlike those he had made at Pensacola, Lt. j.g. Patrick N.L. Bellinger climbing into a flying boat constructed of wood and fabric at a location along the Gulf of Mexico. Yet, there was something distinctly different in the fact that to take off he taxied through Mexican waters and when he became airborne, his mission was not training, but aerial reconnaissance looking for mines that could threaten U.S. ships. The date was April 25, 1914, during the Veracruz Insurrection, and Bellinger s flight was the first time in U.S. history that an airplane flew under combat conditions. Florida Humanities Council invites you: For more information: Enjoy our events around the state! Pensacola Fun Fact! The Space Shuttle program has through triumph and tragedy been the staple of U.S. space exploration for three decades, its momentous beginning occurring on April 12, 1981, when Columbia blasted off from Cape Kennedy. On board, continuing Naval aviation s proud legacy of contributions to the space program, were astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen, both wearers of the wings of gold.
