2 Events of World War II to be commemorated Over the next four years: 75 th Anniversary of the U.S. Navy Experiences in World War II December 7, th Anniversary of The Attack on Pearl Harbor the Start of WWII Starting with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 2016 through the anniversary of the Japanese surrender onboard USS Missouri on September 2, World War II history has always been of intense interest to both our service and the country at large and for a very good reason said Naval History and Heritage Command Director Sam Cox. It was a worldwide conflict with existential consequences that continue to unfold, and it affected every American. America is a maritime nation whose security is tied to the sea and depends on a capable and credible U.S. Navy Membership Dues are payable on or before January 5, 2017 through March 2, A semi-annual payment plan is available, just ask us. NOTE: a late fee of $30 will be assessed after March 2, Join us for the NYCP Chili Cook-off at General Membership Meeting On Thursday, February 2, 2017 VOTE FORYOUR FAVORITE CHILI FEBRUARY 2017 Commodore s Comments BOB SUTTON From the Helm: Your Bridge had its first meeting in 2017 and they have hit the ground running. All I heard after the meeting was it was a good long meeting. I had to make apologies to the wives that had to sit around waiting for it to get over. We covered a lot of topics which included ongoing work with a new look for the web site, Honorary Member discussion, Treasurers report with some new ideas, upcoming social events, Security update, and upcoming Regatta year. There were a lot of good ideas and you will hear all about them if you come to the February 2 nd Membership meeting. Membership at this point is high on my list and it looks like we are at about the same point we were last year with renewals, please get your renewals in soon. All of the committees and director positions have been filled now with one exception. I still need a Historical Archives Director. This is an important spot because it holds the 10th position on the bridge. It also makes sure we live on for years to come even when we are gone. I talked to you last membership meeting and asked for a volunteer to chair the Navy Cup. I am going to ask this in a different way, I am looking for a volunteer to take the lead and keep us on track with respect to the Navy Cup Brochure; we are going to fall behind fast getting to the companies to donate if we don t get started soon. We would also like to see some new faces on the race committee this year. Please step up and volunteer, it is a great time on the water. We start the Regatta year on March 4 th so we need volunteers soon. I think that Past Commodore Matthews is trying to put together a race committee refresher in February, more info on that to follow. I would like to thank my wife Renee and Sandy Pyle for making sure we have a great meal at the membership meeting on February 2 nd. I would also like to give a special thanks to Renee for volunteering her time running the Ship s Store. We will not be ordering a lot of stock but we will have some items for you to see. If you have any ideas about what to order please send her your suggestions. I hope you will all come out for the meeting on February 2 nd and enjoy good food, good friends, and we will have a lot of great ideas to share. rrsutton01@cox.net (662) Bob Sutton 2017 Commodore

Vice s Verses Bill Clark Hello Navy Yacht Club and Friends: January certainly went through Pensacola in a rush. Can t believe February is already upon us. I want to write to you about the four main monetary sources of our Yacht Club. First of all we have membership dues. The dues that we collect in the first quarter are usually our greatest part of our incoming funds. This year we are collecting from many members two years at $ per person or $60.00 for each of the next two years. That means we need to have new members or we will be digging into our Savings. Members such as myself that are still under three years are paying $ for one year. This should tell you that we need you to assist us in finding new members. Increasing the membership is the easiest solution we have to increasing our funds. All the other solutions are not going to be very popular. The second most important source is the advertising booklet for Our Navy Cup Regatta. We should have several thousand dollars in this opportunity. We should be able to greatly increase that to even $5, or even more if everyone is bringing in five or six new customers or even more. This could be our lifesaver. We should have about a 90% of our customers go into a category we can depend on each year. This is something we have no competition with since we control the Navy Cup. If we work it properly we should be able to bring in an increased number every year until the end of time since we would probably never run out of customers. But this needs to be a club effort. The third way we are funded is through food and beverage sales. The only way we are going to increase these sales are going back to # 1, increase the number of members or possibly increase the participation of noshow s to our functions. This is more difficult to accomplish. And finally the fourth way we are funded is Regatta sales. That will be most difficult until we are able to solve the security problem. Increases in this area are not going

4 to help us nearly as much as new members and new advertisers for the Navy Cup. I hope you all can see that our best future is in number one and number two. Recruiting new members and holding on to our current members plus increasing the advertising in the Navy Cup brochure give us the brightest future. Also these two if properly worked will allow us to lower the costs of our dues. Come Join Us Sailing or Social After a meeting or activity at the Crow s Nest - Please remember to wipe down your tables and return the chairs back to their original set-up (four chairs to each table) Thank you. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue in if so, there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 9 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 4 offshore races* only. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship. There s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc.

Fun Facts Because flight students with limited experience are frequently at the controls, the Navy has for many years painted its training aircraft with high-visibility color schemes. On Feb. 9, 1935, the Navy ordered the XN3N-1, the prototype for a trainer that would serve for nearly three decades, its last years indoctrinating Naval Academy midshipmen in Annapolis, Md. Painted in the training aircraft scheme of the era, it earned an enduring nickname familiar to thousands of Naval aviators the Yellow Peril. Roosevelt (CVB 42) steaming off the Florida coast. The airplane completed a 25 hour, 59 minute flight of 5,060 miles before landing in California the following day, the longest flight ever made from the deck of an aircraft carrier. Feb. 22, 1974, marked a special day in the lives of a group of officers completing flight training, their dress-blue uniforms soon to be adorned with the distinctive wings of gold identifying each one of them as a Naval aviator. Yet, when one particular name was called, it represented not only a personal achievement, but also a milestone for the Navy as Lt. j.g. Barbara Ann Allen became the first female Naval aviator. It is the aircraft that symbolized American involvement in the Vietnam War, whether extracting troops from a hot landing zone or taking off from the rooftop of the American Embassy in Saigon during the evacuation of South Vietnam. Naval aviation s first UH-1 Iroquois helicopters known popularly as the Huey, based on its earlier HU- 1 designation entered service with the Marine Corps on Feb. 21, Advanced versions of the aircraft still are operational today. Listen: These streets have stories to tell Who built these towns - this state - we live in? They were adventurers, war refugees, homestead families, citrus growers, ranchers and cowboys, industrialists, quirky individualists, you name it. Meet them in Bartow, DeLand, Lake Wales, and Pensacola via our free walking tours - launching soon. Just download our walking-tour app to your phone or mobile device and walk through Florida history. Florida Humanities Council invites you: For more information: Enjoy our events around the state! Viva Florida Promoting Florida s History and Culture On the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, during which their ship had been at sea, the crew of the carrier Enterprise stood in stunned silence as it entered port and saw firsthand the damage wrought by the enemy. On Feb. 1, 1942, the crew struck back as Enterprise joined the carrier Yorktown in launching air strikes against the Marshall and Gilbert Islands, Naval aviation s first offensive action against the Japanese during World War II. Pensacola Fun Fact! On Feb. 20, 1942, Lt. Edward H. Butch O Hare found himself alone, engine trouble having forced his wingman to return to the carrier Lexington (CV 2). Thus, it was left to him to defend against a group of enemy bombers approaching from Rabaul. He proved up to the task, receiving credit for downing five enemy planes and damaging a sixth. For his actions, he became the first Naval aviator of World War II to receive the Medal of Honor. More Fun Facts! During the early years of the Cold War, Naval aviation s mission requirements included long-range delivery of nuclear weapons. Some of the first aircraft assigned to carry out these flights, patrol planes were never meant to fly from a ship. On Feb. 7, 1950, one of these aircraft, a P2V-3C Neptune, launched from the carrier Franklin D.

16 NYCP May 2017 Boy Scouts Tina Sulser, Chairperson We have a local Gulf Coast Boy Scout troop from Monroe, LA headed to Gulf Breeze the last week in May 2017 to stay at a church camp on the bay. There will be scouts who will be working on earning their sailing badge. They will be sailing in boats 20 or less and will be requesting instruction assistance. This is an activity that you the Navy Yacht Club member & our Bayou Grande Marina staff can help support. NYCP volunteers will be needed to offer their assistance. IT also supports one of our Navy Yacht Club Objectives (Letter E).
