1 Pensacola Yacht Club wins the 54 th Annual Navy Cup Regatta

2 2016 marks 85 Years of Navy Yacht Club HISTORY Established April 12 th, 1931 Navy Yacht Club Pensacola has a long prestigious history: Founded by flight students at NASP in 1931 Navy Cup--Originated in 1962, with the trophy provided by the US Navy. A unique club competition concept that was, by request of the base, part of the th Anniversary Celebration of NASP *The race to Isla Mujeres celebrating over 50 years was only possible because of the collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation Regatta that commemorated the 75th Anniversary of Naval Aviation *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept in female competitive sailing to Pensacola Bay that has been replicated by other local clubs *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots, offering military students the opportunity to compete on the water at a minimal membership cost *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have' given so much for our freedom. The originator of Wounded American Veterans Event, WAVE, is "rolling" around Florida, thanks to adoption by the Florida Commodores Association. This "Day on the Bay" is a labor of love for hosting yacht clubs NYCP supports the Dan Smith Memorial Youth Sailing Scholarship In 2011, Kathy Champagne searched through vintage GOSPORTs, and collaborated with Hill Goodspeed, Naval Aviation Museum Historian, to reveal the following NYCP sailors, who are most likely our founders: *A. Dixon winged in 1931 *William Masland winged in 1931 *H. Starves winged in 1931 *J.H. Smith winged in 1932 We have been entrusted with a rich legacy, for which we should feel honored to protect. JULY 2016 Commodore s Comments JOHN MATTHEWS From the Helm: The 54 th Anniversary of the traditional and historical Navy Cup competition was successfully concluded on June 12. This regatta is our biggest event as Navy Yacht Club Pensacola. Unfortunately only two clubs competed in this outstanding regatta. It appears that Pensacola Beach Yacht Club could not field a team for the competition. It was really terrific that many of our members were in attendance to witness the regatta competition. The competition between Navy YC and PYC was really great. Pensacola Yacht Club came out on top as the winner of the Navy Cup a well deserved win. Congratulations to PYC and their outstanding team. Most of the winning skippers and crews actually attended the trophy presentation at the Crow s Nest. This is a terrific testimony to the significance of the Navy Cup Regatta. The next big regatta is the Bikini Regatta for NYCP featuring all female and mixed crews competing as one of the principal Trilogy regattas which include the Fast Women and the Race of the Roses. This regatta occurs on July 9 with crews and skippers from all over the Gulf Coast racing. George Hero a member of Southern Yacht Club will serve as the PRO for the event. He always enjoys coming to NYCP and helping out with a great regatta. I really think he does it because his wife is going to be a competitor. It would really be great if the NYCP members would come out and support this great event. The facilities committee is still working to find us a temporary home off the base. The Bridge will meet on July 5 at the American Legion Post 33 located on Barrancas Avenue. The building is well suited for our needs and is centrally located. We will be investigating how our needs fit into the requirements of the Legion. We do know that they will allow us to serve and sell our bar libations. Another beneficial item is they have handicap access to the building with plenty of close in parking to the building. It is completely air conditioned and they have a full kitchen which will be available for our use. After our Bridge

3 meeting we will have a report for the general membership on the outcome and a recommendation for its use. Your continued participation in NYCP activities and events is essential to achieving success so I hope to see you around the Crow s Nest. We will begin our process of seeking volunteers to serve in leadership positions for the Navy Yacht Club Bridge for the year We need leadership with dedication and commitment to making Navy Yacht Club Pensacola the best it can be in serving our members and recruiting new members with a strong interest in the mission of Navy Yacht Club Pensacola. If you have an interest in serving please let your desires be known to any current member of the Bridge. Hope you all have a great July 4 th celebration and remember we all need to do all we can to continue to make the United States of America the greatest nation on this planet. 4 NYCP FACILITY COMMITTEE: Chairman Vice Commodore Bob Sutton Members: Barry Pokorney, Don Robinson, Jim Parsons, Ellen Costigan, Liz Richbourg, Marcia Cooper and Beverly Stagg (alternate) If you would like to see what it looks like go to and check it out. After the bridge has seen it and has a chance to talk about it we will decide if it is something to bring to the membership, if so I will present it at the July 7 th Meeting that I hope all of you make. This is a Pot Luck for the 4 th so bring what you would eat on the 4 th and share. Just after that is the Bikini Regatta Saturday the 9 th of July so come out and help it s always a great time. One last thing we need volunteers and we need members, remember it takes all of us to make a great club greater!!! Vice s Verses Bob Sutton Hello All, OK, so I didn t want to come back from Mexico!! Part was selfish because coming home meant that Renee had to go back to Providence and after 30 days with her it was hard to let her go, and part was it was a great time had by all. As I came back and got well we had the Navy Cup on the door step. It was a well put together event (thank you to all the volunteers) the outcome was not what I wanted but next year we will bring the cup back home. The following weekend was its 5 O clock somewhere summer sailstice and the margaritas were flowing. We had a lot of local visitors but not a very good member turn out. I thought this Club was full of a bunch of outgoing partiers. Was I mistaken? If NYCP is going to survive we need you to come out and have some fun and make us want to keep the doors open. 85 years is a long tradition to just say so long to. I will not be the one to do that. We Need You!!! I have had some time to look around and see what is out there for us to call home and not doing so well. Then a little birdie came to me and said what about the Post AL33? (The birdie of course was Commodore Matthews). So I went and checked it out. I made some phone calls and it sounded very good. The Commodore and I went to check it out and talk to the Post Commander. It looks and sounds like something to pursue. The bridge will have their monthly board meeting there to see it and decide if it s something to bring to the membership. Remember what I said this is a membership decision not a bridge decision. I can let you in on some of what it has to offer. The price is right, $ a month for bridge and Membership meetings. If we want to have Regatta parties after Regattas it s $75.00 a Saturday. We can put a refrigerator in the kitchen with a lock for are beer and wine. The store room as a place for locks boxes to keep the party and meal stuff locked in. The kitchen has an ice maker. The room is big enough to hold 300 people. No Stairs, wheel chair friendly. Plenty of parking around the Post. rrsutton01@cox.net (662) Bob Sutton Vice Commodore Social Committee Notes By Kathy Champagne The Social Committee helps with Membership meetings, Regattas and Special Events. 6 NAVY YACHT CLUB PENSACOLA BIKINI REGATTA HISTORY In 1981, Lloyd T. Stagg, OMC, USN, was the Commodore of Navy Yacht Club Pensacola. He and his wife Beverly had previously been stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, and active in the Navy Yacht Club JAX. They were also members of North Florida Cruising Club which sponsored an annual Bikini Regatta to encourage women in sailing and racing. Lloyd thought a Bikini Regatta would have the same positive effect to draw more women into the sailing/racing community in Pensacola. Ron McAffee was the Fleet Captain of NYCP that year and he scheduled the Inaugural Bikini Regatta in the summer of The rules were simple a female had to be on the helm of the sailboat throughout the entire race, from 1 st warning until finish. There was no restriction on the numbers and gender of the remainder of the crew. The race was a success and it was decided to continue and improve the event the next year. The first winner was Ann McBride from the Pensacola Yacht Club aboard Super Fly. In 1982, the rules were changed to require that a female should be on the helm throughout the race and that 50% or greater of the crew must be female (babes in arms did not count.) Subsequently throughout the years the rules were modified. Although the first regatta was for non-spinnaker class only, later (and at the request of the female skippers) a spinnaker class was added. By the fourth year of this regatta, 41 boats participated and they were broken into classes A through F. There was also special recognition for all-female crews. They were awarded a bouquet of red roses, and this inspired the Pensacola Beach Yacht Club to originate The Race for the Roses a regatta for all female crews which was established in 1988 by Ellen Hunt & Karen Kriegel. The Bikini Regatta has not been conducted without controversy. In 1996, the title of the then-politically-incorrect name Bikini Cup Regatta was changed for three years to The Bev Stagg Regatta. After that time, the event s name was restored to the Bikini Regatta. The Point Yacht Club in Josephine, Alabama was inspired to follow in the footsteps of the Bikini Regatta and created in 1992 their own version of a women s race called The Fast Women Regatta. The Point Yacht Club also created in 1999 a Virgin Skipper award to recognize the accomplishments of a first time skipper and the Best All Female award to recognize an all female racing team. First winners were: Savannah Phillips Easy Lady Virgin Skipper & Kathy Holler Conjure II All Female. In 2001, due to the success of the ladies races in the area, Rick Zern from the Pensacola Beach Yacht Club suggested and submitted to the Gulf Yachting Association to create an officially sanctioned event - PHRF GYA Women s Championship Regatta and to tie in the new race championship following the three ladies races in the Pensacola Bay area. To aid in this endeavor and encourage more women participants in the newly created GYA event, representatives from the three area yacht clubs: Kathy Coates from The Point Yacht Club, Maryanne Hayes from The Navy Yacht Club and Rick Zern from the Pensacola Beach Yacht Club helped to support the creation of the Ladies Trilogy Series Trophy given to the top finishing participant who raced in all three of the established ladies races. The first winner of the Trilogy trophy was Pam Rowell on Cuda been Paris and the first winner of the GYA Women s PHRF Championship was Susan Kerzweg. In 2009, the NYCP chapter of the International Order of the Blue Gavel honored Lloyd and Beverly Stagg by donating a perpetual trophy entitled The Commodore Lloyd Stagg and Beverly Stagg Bikini Regatta Trophy which is given to the first place spinnaker fleet and first place non-spinnaker fleet winners each year. The first recipients were: Kriss Ridgeway on Black Ice, Spinnaker Fleet and Linda Curenton on Caddy Wampus, Non-Spinnaker Fleet.

7 Sailing & the Marina Party June 18, 2016 It was a beautiful day to welcome the beginning of summer and enjoy the Summer Sailstice Celebration being held not only at our Navy Yacht Club facility, but being celebrated around the world. The breezes were steady from the southeast blowing 8 to 10 knots as sailors took to their boats. The group from Helldiver took new sailor Marcia Cooper out for her first sail aboard the 33 foot sailboat as other members and friends did the same on their perspective vessels. After a great sail out on Pensacola Bay, the sailors returned to the marina to continue the celebration ashore as the Navy Yacht Club s Summer Sailstice Marina Party Its 5:00 Somewhere! Hostess Kathy Champagne had appetizers from around the world as well as a Margaritaville blender full of the frozen concoctions. There were plenty of visitors, guests and yacht club friends in attendance as Kim Kaminski made the Margaritas, Jim Andrews played the saxophone and warm food, big smiles and music filled the air. Art and Joan Shuck paid a visit to the club, and Art took the time to chat with the young military visitors who came to the party. There was a raffle drawing for special tumblers from Margaritaville and the winners received the tumbler along with a freshly made margarita! Welcome Summer!!!

8 Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for this new Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay in 2016, not just in your home club regattas. There will be 12 regattas in the series and only 9 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 4 offshore races* only. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship. There s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc Pensacola Bay Championship Series * Sep 3 Pcola Bch Pier and Back PBYC (Bay Champ #9/Offshore) Sep 24 CC#2 / CC #3 NYCP (Bay Champ #5 & #10) Oct 1 Lost Bay PtYC (Bay Champ #11) *Oct WFORC PYC (Bay Champ#12/Offshore)

There were 6 Spinnaker Boats and 8 Non-Spinnaker boats and we had 4 sunfish, 2 lasers and 2 Hunter 18 s racing during the weekend with approximately 75 sailors out on the water. Everyone enjoyed the cold drinks, regatta dogs and swabby joes following the racing. Our race committee was well prepared for Saturday s bay racing (see the picture below) and on Sunday our own Commodore took to the water and ran the small boat races with the assistance of Buddy Hamilton and staff from the Bayou Grande Marina. After the first day of racing the competition was close between the two clubs and the final outcome would be decided on the final day of racing between the small boat sailors. The Navy Yacht Club gave a gallant effort but the Pensacola Yacht Club rose to the top and earned the Perpetual Navy Cup Trophy for the 38 th time in the 54 year history of the Navy Cup. Our next race event is the 36 th Annual Bikini Regatta to be held on July 9 th. This Race is a ladies race that allows 50% of the crew to be female and a female sailor on the helm. Come sail, support and be a part of this special race event. If you are interested in being trained to help out with our regattas for let me know we would love to have you help out with any of our upcoming activities. This year was certainly right up there with the best. As this unique regatta strives to bring forth, there was great competition and thoughtful team strategy present throughout the weekend. One of the admirable pieces to this regatta are the dedicated volunteers of the Navy Yacht Club, starting with the annual Navy Cup brochure which is very well done and no small task. The race committee work was fair to all, even including the protest hearing. The Swabby Joes and Regatta Dogs and the welcoming faces of all the members present at NYCP make this regatta very special. PYC is proud to have participated in every Navy Cup Regatta to date and most proud to have been able to come away from this year s tightly contested competition with the 2016 Navy Cup Championship. Thanks and congratulations to the Navy Yacht Club Pensacola on an all around outstanding regatta experience. DO Jim Parson s Granddaughter Sara Fe White NYC s Sunfish Sailor

13 Navy Flying Scot Sailing Greetings! The current Flying Scot schedule this year for our Navy Yacht Club team is: Meigs Regatta (9-10 July) Ft Walton, Summer Regatta (16-17 July) Mobile, Weatherly Regatta (30-31 July) Gulfport and the Lipton Regatta(3-5 Sept) Mobile. Since, I was out of the country for the two regattas in May and one regatta in June. Dick Piatt took the helm for the Flying Scot Team. Let either Dick or myself know if you are interested in racing on the Navy Yacht Club Flying Scot team and if you want to be part of our Flying Scot sailing effort. Thanks!! Where in the W rld is the NYCP Burgee? This is a variation of the Where s Waldo drawings that were popular several years ago. Basically members of the club can submit pictures - to the Social Committee - which have the Burgee or our license plate somewhere in the photograph. Pictures can be submitted at any time electronically or dropping them off at one of the club events to any member of the social committee. Each month the social committee will review the picture(s) submitted and selection of one along with a runner-up which is unique and would be of the most interest to the entire club to submit to the Foghorn. Club members or their guests are eligible to participate. ssteph7@juno.com (850) Sue Stephenson Flying Scot Fleet Captain Navy Yacht Club-Dan Smith Memorial Youth Sailing Scholarship Flying Scot Racing News By Dick Piatt The scot team did not get to travel to Panama City to compete in the Candler Regatta on June 4 th & 5 th since we did not have enough people to race. Several of you have experienced this very same feeling and know it is very tough. Dad really is doing pretty well and we are thankful for that. The reason for my is that he Is turning 85 June 20, He LOVES to get mail and so I thought if any of you wanted to send him a birthday card that would be so great. His address is as follows: (Either one is fine) Fred Russell PO Box 2303 Cumming, GA Or 815 Atlanta Highway, Unit 5B Cumming, GA We will be having a big celebration for him and we hope it will help ease his pain. Please forward to anyone I don't have in Mom's address book. Thanks for your love of both of our parents. We know Mom is smiling down from heaven, Love, Cindy fredbarbararussell@gmail.com (Editor s note: If you missed these two special celebration dates please consider sending a belated birthday wish.) Our sympathies go out to the family of Jacob Gallawa, one of the few remaining Pearl Harbor Survivors who passed away on June 13, 2016 at age 96. He was assigned as a radioman to the USS Pelias in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 during the Japanese attack. While delivering a message to the ship s captain on the bridge, he said, I witnessed the bomb striking the Arizona, resulting in the massive explosion which sank her. Later during WWII, he was in London during the Blitz, he was part of TORCH, a high-speed communications network in the north Atlantic. His team set up communication networks between New York & Russia. He was also stationed in Paris during the war and at the Yalta Conference in Crimea, USSR.

18 Viva Florida Fun Fact As the Nation s First settlement attempt, the Pensacola Bay Area plays a significant role in over 500 years of history that helped to create the State of Florida. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts On July 7, 1915, a new officer reported for flight training at NAS Pensacola, receiving his wings the following year as Naval Aviator Number 23. William Merrill Corry, Jr., was the first native Floridian designated a naval aviator. He tragically lost his life as a result of an aircraft accident in 1920, sustaining fatal injuries while attempting to rescue a fellow officer from a burning aircraft. For his actions, he received the Medal of Honor celebrates: 400 th Anniversary of William Shakespeare s Death 400 th Anniversary of the work of Copernicus 200 th Anniversary of the birth of Frankenstein 150 th Anniversary of Commissioning First Admiral in Navy 130 th Anniversary of Ground Hog s Day 100 th Anniversary of the National Park Service 100 th Anniversary of Einstein s theory of relativity 100 th Anniversary of US declared War on Germany 100 th Anniversary of 1 st Ship to Shore Voice Communication 100 th Anniversary of AB3 Flying Boat Launch 100 th Anniversary of Greer s 100 th Running of the Indy th Anniversary of Spanish Civil War 80 th Anniversary of the Hindenburg Airship first flight 80 th Anniversary of the first flight of a Spitfire 80 th Anniversary of the Pensacola Little Theatre 75 th Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor 75 th Anniversary of the 1 st Liberty Ship 75 th Anniversary of the Commissioning of the US Hornet 75 th Anniversary of the Lend-Lease Act 75 th Anniversary of Captain America 75 th Anniversary of M & M s (candy) 70 th Anniversary of the Blue Angels 70 th Anniversary of the Pensacola Council- US Navy League 60 th Anniversary of Disneyland 50 th Anniversary of the Super Bowl 50 th Anniversary of Boat US 50 th Anniversary of the River Patrol Force (PBRs) 50 th Anniversary of Gemini th Anniversary of the movie Top Gun 30 th Anniversary of the Challenger Disaster 20 th Anniversary of Ice Hockey in Pensacola 25 th Anniversary of Desert Storm 25 th Anniversary of Wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery 15 th Anniversary of Ellen McArthur (youngest women to sail around the world alone) 15 th Anniversary of Operation Enduring Freedom Viva Florida Promoting Florida s History and Culture July 18, 1943, marked one of the most unique gun battles ever waged at sea when the K-74, a blimp on a night patrol mission off the coast of Florida, spotted a German U-Boat (U-134) on the surface. Rather than crash dive, the crew of the enemy submarine manned the deck gun, scoring a hit that shot down K-74. It was the only airship lost to enemy fire during World War II. As for U-134, she was damaged to such an extent that she had to set a course for home. She never reached her base. An aircraft sent her to the bottom in the Bay of Biscay. Pensacola Fun Fact! Rear Adm. William A. Moffett once commented to a fellow officer that those who flew were either crazy or foolish. Thus, it was ironic that when Congress created the Bureau of Aeronautics to oversee the administration of naval aviation on July 21, 1921, Moffett was the man chosen to serve as the organization s first chief. By that time his opinions about aviation had changed and he is known to history as the Father of Naval Aviation. More Fun Facts! Take a look at the patch on a Naval aviator s flight suit and one is sure to see a squadron designation like HS or VT. It makes sense that H identifies a helicopter squadron, but what does V mean? To find the answer, one needs to look back to July 17, 1920, when the secretary of the Navy issued a standard nomenclature that assigned the latter V as the identifier of heavier-thanair aircraft (now it identifies fixed-wing aircraft. Research indicates that this was derived from the French world volplane, which used as a noun means a device sustained in the air by a lifting device, like wings. Sigler is a former navy carrier pilot who sailed an inflatable rubber boat from San Francisco to Hawaii testing survival equipment, techniques, and human endurance. Lieutenant Commander Sigler had developed the survival kit and was able to convince the U.S. Navy to perform the medical research which would be invaluable in that he and his sailing partner, Charlie Gore, would be the only castaways whose medical conditions were well

21 Fred Kendall another Paralympic athlete that the Navy Yacht Club supports (and has supported for the last 4 years) won 1 st Place in the Worlds Competition in the Sonar sailboat. The Sonar is a 7 m (23 ft) one-design keelboat for three to five people. It is bermuda-rigged, with a large mainsail and a 100% jib. The class is recognized by the International Sailing Federation. The Sonar showcased disabled sailing at the 1996 Paralympic Games where the sport was a demonstration event with just the Sonar. The Sonar has been the three person keelboat at every subsequent Paralympics. When being sailed by disabled it is crewed by 3, and sailed without a spinnaker. When running downwind a whisker pole is used to hold the jib out to windward for maximum exposed sail area. The Sonar is well suited for disabled sailing because of its large open cockpit making adaptations easy. The Sonar was designed in 1979 by Bruce Kirby, designer of the popular Laser dinghy. Since then, over 800 boats have been built. Most of the fleet is in the USA, with smaller fleets in Britain and Canada. Since its adoption as a Paralympic class the Sonar has spread to many other countries as well. The Sonar was inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame in Damian- All of us, at Navy Yacht Club wish you the best in competition. We'll be cheering for you all the way. Thank you, for the recent update on your website. Tina Sulser, NYCP Secretary We'd like to share his story with the rest of our members- Damian & Lori Orslene joined NYCP in Damian is a 28 year veteran of the US Air Force, and a Wounded Warrior. They are getting ready for the Olympic Trials next month in Rio. He is fund raising to cover his expenses for being there. Please help make his Olympic Dream come true!
