3 3 1. SCOPE 1.1. This Respiratry Prtectin Prgram applies t all University f Massachusetts Amherst emplyees/students (herein referred as emplyees) wh need t wear a respiratr t perfrm assigned duties n the Amherst campus and ther affiliated lcatins In additin, any UMass-affiliated individual wh vluntarily wears a respiratr including persnally wned respiratrs when ne is nt required (e.g., t minimize expsure t nn-hazardus nuisance drs r nn-hazardus levels f nuisance particulates) is subject t the medical evaluatin, cleaning, maintenance, and strage elements f this Prgram, and will be prvided with necessary training A list f all UMass Amherst persnnel currently enrlled in the entity s Respiratry Prtectin Prgram will be available thrugh the Respiratry Fit Testing Prtacunt Sftware. 2. PURPOSE 2.1. This dcument establishes the UMass Amherst Written Respiratry Prtectin Prgram, and sets frth the practices fr respiratr use, prvides infrmatin and guidance n prper selectin and care f respiratrs, and cntains requirements fr establishing respiratry prtectin prcedures and criteria fr prgram evaluatin It is the gal f UMass Amherst t prvide its emplyees with a safe and healthful wrk envirnment by maintaining airbrne expsure t within acceptable standards and guidelines. The guidelines in this written prgram are designed t minimize emplyee expsure t ccupatinal airbrne cntaminants such as harmful dusts, smke, gases, vaprs, sprays, and hazardus biaersls, as well as xygen deficiency. This is accmplished, as far as feasible, by accepted engineering cntrl measures, such as enclsure r cnfinement f the hazardus peratin, general and lcal exhaust ventilatin, and substitutin with less txic materials. Hwever, when effective engineering cntrls are nt feasible, r while they are being implemented r evaluated, respiratry prtectin may be required t minimize emplyee expsures. In these situatins, respiratry prtectin will be prvided at n cst t the emplyees The fficial Respiratry Prtectin Plicy fr the UMass Amherst may be accessed in the Envirnmental Health and Safety Plicy Manual, at: 3. DEFINITIONS 3.1 Air-purifying respiratr A respiratr with an air-purifying filter, cartridge, r canister that remves specific air cntaminants by passing ambient air thrugh the air-purifying element. This includes dust masks and any filtering facepiece. 3.2 Atmsphere-supplying respiratr A respiratr that supplies the respiratr user with breathing air frm a surce independent f the ambient atmsphere, and includes supplied-air respiratrs (SAR s) and self-cntained breathing apparatus (SCBA) units. 3.3 Canister r cartridge A cntainer with a filter, srbent, r catalyst, r cmbinatin f these items, which remves specific cntaminants frm the air passed thrugh the cntainer. 3.4 Emergency situatin Any ccurrence such as, but nt limited t, equipment failure, rupture f cntainers, r failure f cntrl equipment that may r des result in an uncntrlled significant release f an airbrne cntaminant.

4 3.5 Emplyee expsure Expsure t a cncentratin f an airbrne cntaminant that wuld ccur if the emplyee were nt using respiratry prtectin. 3.6 Expsure / hazard assessment An evaluatin f the nature and magnitude f ptential emplyee expsures t respiratry hazards in the wrkplace that wuld ccur if the emplyee were nt using respiratry prtectin, t prvide a basis fr selecting respiratry prtectin equipment. Emplyers must make a "reasnable estimate" f the emplyee expsures anticipated t ccur as a result f thse hazards, including thse likely t be encuntered in reasnably freseeable emergency situatins, and must als identify the physical state and chemical frm f such cntaminant(s). 3.7 End-f-service-life indicatr (ESLI) A system that warns the respiratr user f the apprach f the end f adequate respiratry prtectin (e.g., the srbent in a cartridge-type respiratr is appraching saturatin r is n lnger effective). 3.8 Escape-nly respiratr A respiratr intended t be used nly fr emergency exit. 3.9 Filter A cmpnent used in respiratrs t remve slid r liquid aersls frm the inspired air Fit test/fit testing The use f a prtcl t evaluate hw well a respiratr fits an individual. OSHAapprved fit testing prtcls are prvided in Appendix A f the OSHA Respiratry Prtectin Standard, 29 CFR High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters A filter that is at least 99.97% efficient in remving particles f 0.3 micrmeters in diameter. The equivalent NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 particulate filters are the N100, R100, and P100 filters Immediately dangerus t life r health (IDLH) An atmsphere that pses an immediate threat t life, wuld cause irreversible adverse health effects, r wuld impair an individual s ability t escape frm a dangerus atmsphere Negative pressure respiratr (tight fitting) A respiratr in which the air pressure inside the face piece is negative during inhalatin with respect t the ambient air pressure utside the respiratr Oxygen-deficient atmsphere An atmsphere with xygen cntent belw 19.5% by vlume Physician r ther licensed health care prfessinal (PLHCP) An individual whse legally permitted scpe f practice (i.e. license, registratin, r certificatin) allws him r her t independently prvide, r be delegated the respnsibility t prvide, sme r all f the health care services required by the respiratry standard Prtacunt A Quantitative Fit Test (QNFT) apparatus manufactured by TSI Inc. This apparatus uses the particulates fund in ambient air as the challenge medium. Quantificatin is by ptical density measurement using cndensatin nucleus cunting technlgy. The instrument specificatins include detectin f particles as small as 0.2μm in a range f 0.1 t 5 x 10 5 particles/cm Pwered air-purifying respiratr (PAPR) An air-purifying respiratry that uses a blwer t frce ambient air thrugh air-purifying elements t the inlet cvering Pressure demand respiratr A psitive pressure atmsphere-supplying respiratr that admits breathing air t the facepiece when the psitive pressure is reduced inside the facepiece by inhalatin Qualitative fit test (QLFT) means a pass/fail fit test t assess the adequacy f respiratr fit that relies n the individual's respnse t the test agent. 4

5 Quantitative fit test (QNFT) A test in which a challenge agent is administered utside the face piece and the presence f the agent is detected and enumerated by analytical instrumentatin Respiratry prtectin prgram administratr (RPPA) An individual having the knwledge, respnsibility and authrity sufficient t implement and supervise a prper respiratr prgram The (material) safety data sheet (SDS) a technical dcument which prvides cmprehensive infrmatin fr use in wrkplace chemical management. Emplyers and wrkers use the SDS as surces f infrmatin abut hazards and t btain advice n safety precautins 3.23 Seal check An actin cnducted by the respiratr user t determine if the respiratr is prperly seated t the face Self-cntained breathing apparatus (SCBA) An atmsphere-supplying respiratr fr which the breathing air surce is designed t be carried by the user Supplied-air respiratr (SAR) r airline respiratr An atmsphere-supplying respiratr fr which the surce f breathing air is nt designed t be carried by the user. 4. RESPONSIBILITIES NOTE: Wrds in bld italics thrughut this Written Respiratry Prtectin Prgram indicate terms that are defined in Sectin 3.0 Definitins. 4.1 UMass Amherst (Emplyer) UMass Amherst is respnsible fr prviding respiratrs t emplyees when they are necessary fr health prtectin. UMass Amherst will prvide respiratrs that are apprpriate fr the intended purpse at n charge t affected emplyees. Any expense assciated with respiratr training, medical evaluatins, and respiratry prtectin equipment will be brne by the UMass Amherst. 4.2 Respiratry Prtectin Prgram Administratr (RPPA) The RPPA fr the UMass Amherst is Dawn Tn, EH&S Department. The RPPA is respnsible fr administering the Respiratry Prtectin Prgram. Duties f the prgram administratr include: Establish and maintain the UMass Amherst written respiratry prtectin prgram, and cnduct required evaluatins f its effectiveness Cnduct and/r versee initial and peridic wrkplace expsure/hazard assessments Cnduct and/r versee initial and annual respiratr training n the prper use and care f respiratrs Cnduct and/r versee initial and annual respiratr fit testing fr all respiratr users Select respiratrs fr use in the wrkplace based n findings frm wrkplace expsure/hazard assessments.

6 Maintain recrds f wrkplace expsure/hazard assessments, fit testing, and training Ntify apprpriate department supervisrs and respiratr users when they are due fr renewal medical evaluatins, respiratr fit testing and/r refresher training Prvide a cpy f the UMass written respiratry prtectin prgram and a cpy f the OSHA respiratry prtectin standard t PLHCP Ensure that each emplyee prir t their medical evaluatin cmplete University f Massachusetts Request fr Medical Evaluatin Frm (Attachment 1) and OSHA Respiratr Medical Evaluatin Questinnaire (Attachment 2) Determine apprpriate respiratr cartridge and canister change-ut schedules (when n ESLI exists) based n bjective infrmatin r data that will ensure that canisters and cartridges are changed befre the end f their service life. RPPA will als include mentin f the infrmatin and data relied upn and the basis fr the canister and cartridge change schedule and the basis fr reliance n the data in this written prgram Authrize vluntary use f respiratry prtective equipment n a case-by-case basis, depending n specific wrkplace cnditins and the results f medical evaluatins (see als Sectin 6.7, Vluntary Respiratr Use) Authrize exemptins frm wearing respiratry prtective equipment n a case-by-case basis, depending n specific wrkplace cnditins and the results f medical evaluatins. An exempted emplyee will nt be permitted t wrk in an area requiring respiratr use Cnduct an annual review f the UMass Amherst respiratry prtectin prgram (see als Sectin 7.0, Annual Review f the Respiratry Prtectin Prgram) and making prgram r prcedural changes as necessary. 4.3 Supervisrs f Respiratr Users Supervisrs are respnsible fr ensuring that the respiratry prtectin prgram is implemented in their particular areas. In additin t being knwledgeable abut the prgram requirements fr their wn prtectin, supervisrs must als ensure that the prgram is understd and fllwed by the emplyees under their charge. Duties f supervisrs include: Ensure that affected emplyees receive required medical evaluatins.

7 Ensure that affected emplyees receive respiratr training and fit testing prir t wrking with the respiratr, and annually thereafter Prvide new respiratr users with n-the-jb training abut ptential respirable hazards, respiratr requirements, and this prgram Supply apprpriate respiratrs t affected emplyees free f charge Ensure that affected emplyees wear assigned/apprpriate respiratrs Ensure that the respiratrs are cleaned, maintained and stred Ntify the RPPA: 4.4 Respiratr Users If there is evidence t suggest that an emplyee needs t be medically reevaluated fr respiratr use, including but nt limited t changes t a user s facial cntur, weight gain r lss, facial surgery r whenever the user experiences medical signs r symptms related t their ability t wear a respiratr Whenever there are significant changes in the wrkplace cnditins fr respiratr users (e.g., physical wrk effrt, prtective clthing, and temperature) Prir t requiring emplyees t use a prduct, chemical, r substance fr which the prduct label r Safety Data Sheet (SDS) recmmends the prtectin f a respiratr at any cncentratin Whenever they believe there is a need fr emplyees t use respiratrs t perfrm wrk. Each respiratr user is respnsible fr wearing his r her respiratr when and where required, and in the manner in which they are trained. Respiratr users must als: Use the respiratry prtectin prvided in accrdance with instructins and training prvided by the RPPA Clean, disinfect, and prperly stre respiratrs Guard against damage t respiratrs during use, cleaning, and strage Attend training and btain medical surveillance Cmply with respiratr fit test requirements Reprt any truble with r malfunctin f the respiratr t the apprpriate supervisr and/r t the RPPA Ntify the apprpriate supervisr r the RPPA: Whenever medical signs r symptms f illness appear that may be related t respiratr usage r expsure t hazardus atmspheres.

8 Whenever a change ccurs in the wrkplace cnditins that culd increase the physilgical burden n the respiratr users while wearing the respiratr (e.g., increase in physical wrk effrt required, significant increase r decrease in wrkplace temperature, the use f prtective clthing, etc.) Prir t using a prduct, chemical, r substance fr which the prduct label r Safety Data Sheet (SDS) recmmends the prtectin f a respiratr at any cncentratin Whenever respiratr use is thught t be necessary If facial cnturs significantly change, such as by weight gain r lss, facial surgery, etc Physician r Other Licensed Health Care Prfessinal (PLHCP) Using a respiratr may place a physilgical burden n emplyees that varies with the type f respiratr wrn, the jb and wrkplace cnditins in which the respiratr is used, and the medical status f the emplyee. Accrdingly, UMass Amherst will prvide a medical evaluatin t determine each affected emplyee's ability t use a respiratr, befre that emplyee is fit tested r required t use the respiratr in the wrkplace. An emplyee s medical evaluatin will cease when the emplyee is n lnger required t use a respiratr. The duties and respnsibilities f the UMass Amherst PLHCP (University Health Services) are as fllws: Perfrm medical evaluatins fr respiratr users (see Sectin 5.1, Medical Evaluatin) Prvide UMass RPPA with a written recmmendatin fr each ptential respiratr user regarding the individual s ability t use the intended respiratr Determine the frequency f additinal fllw-up medical evaluatins, if needed Apprve emplyees fr respiratr use and specify any limitatins Answer emplyee questins regarding any health effects f respiratry use Maintain cnfidential recrds f Respiratry Prtectin Prgram-related medical evaluatins as required by law. 5. QUALIFICATIONS FOR RESPIRATOR USERS 5.1. Medical Evaluatin Emplyees wh are either required t wear respiratrs, r wh chse t wear an elastmeric face piece respiratr vluntarily, must be medically evaluated by a PLHCP. Emplyees are nt permitted t wear respiratrs until a PLHCP has determined that they are medically able t d s. Any emplyee refusing the medical evaluatin will nt be permitted t wrk in an area requiring respiratr use An initial medical evaluatin will be cmpleted by a PLHCP frm the UMass Amherst University Health Services befre an individual is fit tested r required t use a respiratr in the wrkplace. (als see sectin 5.4)

9 The initial medical evaluatin will either use the Medical Evaluatin Questinnaire, Sectins 1 and 2, Part A f Appendix C t OSHA s Respiratry Prtectin Standard r an initial medical examinatin will be cnducted by a PLHCP that btains the same infrmatin as the OSHA medical questinnaire The initial medical evaluatin and any fllw-up examinatin/evaluatin will be administered cnfidentially during the emplyee s nrmal wrking hurs. A fllw-up medical examinatin/evaluatin will be prvided fr an emplyee wh whse initial medical examinatin demnstrates the need fr a fllw-up medical examinatin. The fllw-up medical examinatin will include any medical tests, cnsultatins, r diagnstic prcedures that the PLHCP deems necessary t make a final determinatin abut the ability f an emplyee t wear a respiratr The medical questinnaire, if used, will be administered in a manner that ensures that the emplyee understands its cntent; (i.e., if language barriers exist, translatrs will be utilized). When this is nt pssible, an emplyee will be sent directly t the PHLCP fr medical evaluatin The RPPA in cnjunctin with the emplyee s supervisr will prvide the PLHCP the list f hazardus substances by wrk area, and the fllwing infrmatin (thrugh the cmpletin f OSHA Respiratr Medical Evaluatin Questinnaire (Attachment 2) abut each emplyee requiring evaluatin: Name and date f birth Emplyee s wrk area and/r jb title Prpsed respiratr type and weight Length f time required t wear respiratr Expected physical wrk lad (light, mderate, r heavy) Ptential temperature and humidity extremes Any additinal prtective clthing required After determining the emplyee s ability t use a respiratr, the PLHCP will prvide the RPPA with a cpy f written recmmendatin with fllwing: Any limitatins n respiratr use related t the medical cnditin f the emplyee Any limitatins n respiratr use related t the wrkplace cnditins in which the respiratr will be used Whether the emplyee is medically able t use a respiratr The need fr any fllw-up medical evaluatins.

10 A statement that the PLHCP has prvided the emplyee with a cpy f the PLHCP s written recmmendatin Pwered air purifying respiratrs (PAPRs) r ther apprpriate psitive pressure respiratrs will be prvided t emplyees as required by medical necessity Additinal Medical Evaluatins Additinal medical evaluatins fr respiratr users will be cnducted whenever: 10 User reprts medical signs r symptms that are related t the ability t use a respiratr, such as shrtness f breath, dizziness, chest pains, r wheezing. A PLHCP r supervisr infrms the UMass RPPA that an emplyee needs t be reevaluated. Infrmatin frm the respiratry prtectin prgram, including bservatins made during fit testing and prgram evaluatin, indicates a need fr emplyee reevaluatin. A change ccurs in wrkplace cnditin (e.g., physical wrk effrt, prtective clthing, and temperature) that may result in an increased physilgical burden placed n the emplyee All examinatins and questinnaires will remain cnfidential between the emplyee and the evaluating physician. The RPPA will nly retain the physician s written recmmendatins regarding each emplyee s ability t wear a respiratr Training The RPPA will cnduct and/r versee training fr respiratr users and their supervisrs n the cntents f the UMass Amherst Written Respiratry Prtectin Prgram and their respnsibilities under it. All affected emplyees and their supervisrs will be trained prir t using a respiratr in the wrkplace Emplyees using respiratrs will successfully cmplete training specific t the type f respiratr used. Each emplyee shall demnstrate knwledge in the fllwing: Why the respiratr is necessary and hw imprper fit, usage, r maintenance can cmprmise its prtective effect The limitatins and capabilities f their particular respiratr Respiratr use in emergency situatins (e.g., respiratr malfunctins) Hw t inspect, dn and dff, use, and seal check their respiratr Maintenance and strage prcedures

11 Prper use f their respiratr in rutine and reasnably freseeable emergency situatins Cleaning, disinfecting, string, inspecting, repairing, discarding and therwise maintaining respiratrs Hw t ensure adequate air quality, quantity, and flw f breathing air fr atmspheresupplying respiratrs Emplyees will be trained in the respiratry hazards t which they are ptentially expsed at UMass Amherst during bth rutine and emergency situatins Emplyees will be trained in the prper use f respiratrs, dnning, seal check, dffing, limitatins n their use, and their maintenance Training will be cnducted in a manner that is understandable t the emplyee (e.g., if language barriers exist, translatrs will be utilized) Training will take place prir t using a respiratr in the wrkplace and at least annually thereafter Annual retraining will be cnducted t reestablish emplyee prficiency and intrduce new r revised cntrl methds and prcedures, as necessary. Additinally, retraining will be administered if/when the fllwing situatins ccur: Changes in the wrkplace r the type f respiratr render previus training bslete Inadequacies in the emplyee s knwledge r use f the respiratr indicate that the emplyee has nt retained the requisite understanding r skill Any ther situatin arises in which retraining appears necessary t ensure safe respiratr use, at the RPPA s discretin The RPPA will dcument respiratry training by signing the Fit Test Reprt, and the dcumentatin will include the type, mdel, and size f respiratr fr which each emplyee has been trained and fit tested Fit Testing The UMass RPPA will cnduct and/r versee initial and annual respiratr fit testing fr all respiratr users in accrdance with Appendix A f the OSHA Respiratry Prtectin Standard, 29 CFR Any individual required t use a respiratr (with the exceptin f lse fitting PAPR) will successfully cmplete at least a quantitative fit test (QNFT) specific t the make, mdel, style, and size f respiratr used, befre its initial use and at least annually thereafter Mre frequent fit testing will be perfrmed if required by OSHA regulatins fr specific substances (e.g., asbests, lead, etc.) Fit testing fr tight-fitting PAPR s and atmsphere-supplying respiratrs (including SCBAs) will be accmplished by perfrming a quantitative fit test in the negative pressure mde, regardless f the mde f peratin during use. 11

12 If after passing the quantitative fit test, an individual subsequently believes that their respiratr fit is unacceptable, the individual will be given a reasnable pprtunity t select a different respiratr and t be re-tested Additinal fit testing will be cnducted whenever the user reprts, r the PLHCP, supervisr, r RPPA bserve changes in a respiratr user s physical cnditin that culd affect the respiratr fit, including but nt limited t: Facial scarring Dental changes Csmetic surgery A significant change in bdy weight Individuals are nt permitted t wear respiratrs if they have: Facial hair that cmes between the sealing surface f the face piece and the face Facial hair that interferes with valve functins A cnditin that interferes with face-t-face piece seal r valve functin If a respiratr user requires crrective eye glasses, the RPPA will make arrangements fr prviding prescriptin eyeglasses designed nt t interfere with face-t-face piece seal, at n cst t the user The RPPA will issue UMass Amherst Respiratr Card t the individuals wh successfully cmplete their fit testing Transfer f Qualificatins An individual may submit dcumentatin f an apprpriate respiratr medical evaluatin, fit test n a specific respiratr r training within the previus year fr transfer cnsideratin The acceptability f transfer dcumentatin will be at the discretin f the RPPA.

13 13 6. PROCEDURES 6.1. Expsure/Hazard Assessments The RPPA r EHS specialist will cnduct a wrkplace expsure/hazard assessment fr each peratin, prcess, r wrk area where airbrne cntaminants may be present in rutine peratins r during an emergency The wrkplace expsure/hazard assessment will include: Identificatin and develpment f a list f hazardus substances used in the wrkplace by department r wrk prcess Review f wrk prcesses t determine where ptential expsure t hazardus substances may ccur. This review will be cnducted by surveying the wrkplace, reviewing the prcess recrds, and talking with emplyees and supervisrs Expsure mnitring t quantify ptential hazardus expsures, as warranted The RPPA will select respiratrs t be used n site, based n findings frm wrkplace expsure/hazard assessments, in cnjunctin with guidance frm the OSHA Respiratry Prtectin Standard 29 CFR , and ther authritative surces as apprpriate (e.g., NIOSH guidance, manufacturers instructins, etc.) Updating the Expsure/Hazard Assessments The RPPA will revise and update the expsure/hazard assessment as needed (i.e., any time wrk prcess changes may ptentially affect expsure). If an emplyee feels that respiratry prtectin is needed during a particular activity, he/she shuld cntact his/her supervisr r the RPPA. The RPPA r EHS specialist will evaluate the ptential hazard, and cnduct and/r versee an apprpriate wrk area expsure / hazard assessment. If it is determined that respiratry prtectin is necessary, all ther elements f the Respiratry Prtectin Prgram will be in effect fr thse tasks, and the prgram will be updated accrdingly Respiratr Selectin Respiratrs may be used when engineering cntrls are nt feasible, while engineering cntrls are being implemented, and during emergency situatins Only NIOSH tested and certified respiratrs will be prvided t emplyees The RPPA will ensure the evaluatin f hazards in the wrkplace, and, identificatin f a relevant wrkplace and user factrs, and will base respiratr selectin n these factrs in accrdance with the respiratry prtectin prcedures Air-purifying respiratrs used fr the prtectin against gases and vaprs will be equipped with an end-f-service-life indicatr (ESLI) certified by NIOSH fr the cntaminant [r] if there is n ESLI fr the cntaminant r the wrkplace cnditin, a change schedule fr gas/vapr canisters and cartridges based n bjective infrmatin r data will be develped and implemented that will ensure the canisters are changed befre the end f their service life.

14 If the develpment f a gas/vapr canister r cartridge change schedule based n bjective infrmatin r data is nt feasible, a supplied air respiratr system will be used Fr prtectin frm particulates, an air-purifying respiratr equipped with NIOSH-certified high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters r an air-purifying respiratr equipped with a filter certified fr particulates by NIOSH under 42 CFR Part 84 r an atmsphere-supplying respiratr will be used Fr situatins where vaprs r gases are mixed with particulates, cmbinatin cartridges may be used prvided that all prgram requirements are met Pressure demand SCBA r cmbinatin pressure demand SAR with auxiliary SCBA will be the nly type f respiratrs used in IDLH atmspheres All xygen-deficient atmspheres will be cnsidered IDLH. If the atmsphere is uncharacterized, it must be assumed t be IDLH and a pressure demand SCBA r cmbinatin pressure demand SAR with auxiliary SCBA must be wrn Breathing-air may be supplied t respiratrs frm cylinders r breathing-air cmpressrs 6.4. 16 Fit Testing The RPPA will cnduct respiratry fit testings using the Prtacunt machine and in accrdance with the OSHA accepted fit testing prcedures as fllws: The test subject will be allwed t pick the mst acceptable respiratr frm a sufficient number f respiratr mdels and sizes s that the respiratr is acceptable t, and crrectly fits, the user Prir t the selectin prcess, the test subject will be shwn hw t put n a respiratr, hw it shuld be psitined n the face, hw t set strap tensin and hw t determine an acceptable fit. A mirrr will be available t assist the subject in evaluating the fit and psitining f the respiratr The test subject will be infrmed that he/she is being asked t select the respiratr that prvides the mst acceptable fit. Each respiratr represents a different size and shape, and if fitted and used prperly, will perfrm as designed The test subject will be instructed t hld each chsen face piece up t the face and eliminate thse that bviusly d nt give an acceptable fit The mre acceptable face pieces will be nted in case the ne selected prves unacceptable; the mst cmfrtable mask is dnned and wrn at least five minutes t assess cmfrt. 17 Psitive pressure check: test subject will be asked t clse ff the exhalatin valve and exhale gently int the face piece. The face fit will be cnsidered satisfactry if a slight psitive pressure can be built up inside the face piece withut any evidence f utward leakage f air at the seal. Negative pressure check: test subject will be asked t clse ff the inlet pening f the canister r cartridge(s) by cvering with the palm f the hand(s) r by replacing the filter seal(s); inhale gently s that the face piece cllapses slightly; and hld the breath fr ten secnds. If the face piece remains in its slightly cllapsed cnditin and n inward leakage f air is detected, the tightness f the respiratr will be cnsidered satisfactry. Befre cnducting the negative and psitive pressure checks, the subject will be tld t seat the mask n the face by mving the head frm side-t-side and up and dwn slwly while taking in a few slw deep breaths. Anther face piece will be selected and retested if the test subject fails the user seal check tests Fit test will nt be cnducted if there is any hair grwth between the skin and the face piece sealing surface, such as stubble beard grwth, beard, mustache r sideburns which crss the respiratr sealing surface. Any type f apparel which interferes with a satisfactry fit shall be altered r remved If a test subject exhibits difficulty in breathing during the tests, she r he will be referred t a PHLCP, as apprpriate, t determine whether the test subject can wear a respiratr while perfrming his r her duties If the emplyee finds the fit f the respiratr unacceptable, the test subject will be given the pprtunity t select a different respiratr and t be retested Prir t the cmmencement f the fit test, the test subject will be given a descriptin f the fit test and the test subject's respnsibilities during the test prcedure. The descriptin f the prcess will include a descriptin f the test exercises that the subject will be perfrming. The respiratr t be tested will be wrn fr at least 5 minutes befre the start f the fit test The fit test will be perfrmed while the test subject is wearing any applicable safety equipment that may be wrn during actual respiratr use which culd interfere with respiratr fit Test Exercises. Each test exercise will be perfrmed fr a minimum f ne minute except fr the grimace exercise which will be perfrmed fr 15 secnds. The test subject will be questined by the test cnductr regarding the cmfrt f the respiratr upn cmpletin f the prtcl. If it has becme unacceptable, anther mdel f respiratr will be tried. The respiratr will nt be adjusted nce the fit test exercises begin. Any adjustment vids the test, and the fit test will be repeated Nrmal breathing: In a nrmal standing psitin, withut talking, the test subject will be asked t breathe nrmally Deep breathing: In a nrmal standing psitin, the test subject will be asked t breathe slwly and deeply, taking cautin s as nt t hyperventilate Turning head side t side: Standing in place, the test subject will be asked t slwly turn his/her head frm side t side between the extreme psitins n each side. The test subject will be asked t hld the head at each extreme mmentarily t inhale at each side. 17

The subject will be asked t read frm a prepared text such as the Rainbw Passage, cunt backward frm 100, r recite a memrized pem r sng. The recrd will cntain the test subject's name; verall fit factr; make, mdel, style and size f respiratr used; and date tested Respiratr Use General Requirements / Prcedures The user will perfrm a seal check in accrdance with this prgram each time they dn the respiratr. Any hair grwth r apparel (e.g., jewelry, headphnes, etc.) that interferes with the face-t-face piece seal r valve functin will be remved r altered s as t eliminate interference and allw a satisfactry respiratr fit If crrective spectacles r gggles are required, they will be wrn s as nt t affect the fit f the face piece If a respiratr user requires crrective eyeglasses, the RPPA will make arrangements fr prviding prescriptin eyeglasses designed nt t interfere with face-t-facepiece seal, at n cst t the user Persnal prtective equipment must be wrn in a manner that des nt interfere with face-t-facepiece seal r valve functin Wrk area cnditins will be mnitred by the RPPA r the supervisrs fr changes in wrk cnditins, degree f emplyee expsure r stress that may affect respiratr perfrmance and reevaluate the cntinued effectiveness f the respiratrs used.

19 If a respiratr user detects vapr r gas breakthrugh, changes in breathing resistance r leakage f the face piece, they will immediately leave the airbrne cntaminatin area and determine the cause as fllws: Cartridge breakthrugh and cartridge breathing resistance indicate a need fr cartridge replacement Leakage in the facepiece requires a respiratr inspectin. If the respiratr is damaged in any way, ntify the supervisr, and request a replacement fr the damaged unit If the respiratr is nt damaged, perfrm a user respiratr seal check in accrdance with Respiratry Prtectin Prcedures. If the facepiece still leaks, stp wrk and call the RPPA The RPPA will ensure that respiratrs selected fr prtectin against gases and vaprs are equipped with an ESLI certified by NIOSH fr the cntaminant. If there is n ESLI apprpriate fr cnditins in a particular wrk area, the RPPA will implement a change-ut schedule fr canisters and cartridges that is based n bjective infrmatin r data that will ensure that canisters and cartridges are changed befre the end f their service life.
