Please ensure that you fill out all information on your entry cards & place them &the entry money in an envelope with name & details marked clearly on it. It can be very time-consuming to chase up information. Also, please be mindful of what time you contact committee members, just because you are up at 4.30am doesn t mean other people are Please don t forget that we are encouraging all our Adult members to do the on-line Code of conduct & Member Welfare course on the NSW Swimming website, it is very beneficial. Good luck to everyone participating in the State Open Water this weekend. We hope to come away with a few more national times and a few medals. Your Captains, Sarah and Aidan Club Captains The last few weeks have been busy and it is not over yet. In the weeks coming we still have State Open Water, end of school, our club Christmas Party, training at Bulli beach and finally Christmas. All this wraps up another wonderful year. Last weekend was pretty exciting for around 20 club members as we went to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre and participated in the Mud Run. This day was great fun, with many laughs, spills and a lot of mud!! Thank you to everybody who came down and joined in. Some photos of everybody have been included in the newsletter. If you have any photos of the day, can you please send them to Adam Seton? Sophia and Georgina have offered to put together a slideshow for the presentation night. On Sunday, another large group of swimmers went to Penrith lakes for the Metro South West Open Water. We saw some first time 5km swimmers who were nervous, but got in and qualified for state, and are ready to do it all again this weekend. There were also many medal winners on this day, making it another successful year for our club at this meet. On the weekend just gone, the Metropolitan Championships were on again at Homebush. What a wonderful weekend this was with swimmers making nationals times, winning medals, breaking records and doing pb s. Congratulations to everybody who swam, but in particular Liam Salmond who qualified for nationals in the 200m fly, Rachael Robinson who qualified for another swim in the 400m free, Dominic Lopez who qualified for nationals in the year President s Chat December Club Meeting Big thanks to Darryl and Paul Willies for managing the changeover of web providers for Swimming Australia. Darryl has looked after the registration and member portals, while Paul has had to build our website from scratch. The transition is still continuing so please be patient. Thanks also to our race secretary Rebecca it has been an extremely busy time for her but she continues to go out of her way to help everyone. With Macquarie Fields not holding a Carnival, one that we normally fund swimmers to, the meeting agreed to fund the Camden Carnival in February. The club will pay for three swims for every member attending that Carnival. Michelle has been busy organising national team uniforms to be ready for those who will be attending National Open Water in Geelong in February. She showed us the mock-ups and they look great thanks Michelle. We now have 19 swimmers who have qualified to swim at National Open Water, one of our biggest teams ever. This is one of the great benefits of swimming under Justin and his coaching team they are able to provide these representative opportunities to so many of our swimmers. On the back of that is the 29 swimmers who represented CASC at Metros last weekend. What a great effort from a swim club in Sydney s South West! John Saliba Sadly, as you all know by now John Saliba, a life member of the club passed away suddenly on Friday 22nd November. I would like to thank the large number of current and past club members who were able to attend the funeral. It highlighted the esteem and respect John was held in. As a club we have Campbelltown ASC News Letter Page - 4

5 much to thank John for. As president for 8 years the club flourished under his guidance. Much of what we do today we should thank John for. The way we run club nights, how we set our programs, our winter carnivals, the club constitution, rules of competition, information sheets all stem from John. John was a qualified referee and was generous in giving his time to officiating, from club time trials to district, state, National and International levels. In the swimming community John will be best remembered for his contribution to Open Water Swimming. He travelled the world as handler for his son Mark, who was the Australian Open Water Champion for over 6 years. John was the Australian Open Water Team Manager for a period of 12 years. Representing his country was a role he was honoured and proud of. All of current Australian and NSW Open Water Swimming documents come from John. He, with Mark and Alan Thompson helped forge Australia s and our clubs reputation in OWS. Ironically in a conversation at MASCA prior to John s passing, Lorraine Barnes from Picton spoke on John s role in MASCA over the years. In Lorraine s words We (the other clubs) had no idea how to run a Carnival or a club night. John was so patient and giving of his time to all the clubs in the area. We were lucky to have someone of his calibre to call on. I also received this note from Barbara Kingsell, a Camden Club life member and a great support to us in refereeing our time trials and carnivals On behalf of our President Sue, the committee and all our members, I would like to pass on our sincere sympathy to you all at Campbelltown Swimming Club. Having worked with John I can only say he was an exemplary technical official, putting into practice his infinite knowledge of both pool and open water competition. He will be remembered by all who knew him at Camden Club with great affection and respect. In conversation with Barbara she told me she has modelled her whole refereeing approach on the way John conducted himself. Listening to John s two sons Matthew and Mark speak I took away a couple of points that we can all benefit from. He was a devoted and loving father and husband, family was everything to him. He was a proud Australian who gladly gave his time to his community. In all that he did for swimming he never forgot that he was doing it wholly and solely for the swimmers. His passing is a sad loss for the Australian swimming community and a greater loss for his family. Please keep the Saliba family in your prayers over the Christmas period as they readjust their lives. 02-December-2013 The following is a copy of a speech given by local member Russell Matheson in the Federal Parliament Mr Deputy Speaker; it is with great sadness that I rise today to pay tribute to an inspirational man from my electorate, who impacted the lives of so many young people and their families across Macarthur. Last week I attended the funeral of John Saliba who passed away suddenly on Friday November 22nd, aged 62. He was a Life Member of Campbelltown Amateur Swim Club where he served as president for 8 years. He dedicated his life to supporting local swimmers in Campbelltown, NSW and eventually, across the world. John, together with his son Mark and former Australian coach Alan Thompson were pioneers and champions of Open Water Swimming in Australia. John travelled the world as Mark s manager, forging our country s reputation in the sport. His contribution, influence and legacy to the swimming community was inspirational. He was a highly-regarded and well-respected official at a club, state, national and international levels and was instrumental in producing most of the documentation and policy on Open Water Swimming in NSW. John was also was the Australian Open Water Team Manager for many years. Former Swimming Australia, Open Water Head Coach, Greg Towle said John s drive and passion for the sport of open water swimming set him apart. John s death has not only shocked and saddened former members of the Australian swim team, but swimmers from around the world who spent time with him during international competitions. He was dedicated to helping all swimmers be the best they could be. At his funeral last week at St Gregory s College in Campbelltown, it was obvious that John had a tremendous impact on the lives of many young athletes in my electorate and their families. His son s Matthew and Mark spoke about their dad and the love he had for his family and the sport of swimming. He was a loving husband to Carol, dad to Mark and Campbelltown ASC News Letter Page - 5

6 Matthew, father-in-law to Kristy and Genevieve and had four beautiful young granddaughters whom he loved with all of his heart. Since his death I have heard from former swimmers and parents of the Campbelltown Swimming Club who told me John s kindness and support was second to none. He was always fair, encouraging and gave each swimmer his time and advice to help them progress to higher levels in the sport. John s contribution to open water swimming in Australia and around the world is immeasurable. On a local level John set a great example for the parents of young athletes across Macarthur and to executive members of our local sporting clubs. He was a kind and generous man who had a great passion for swimming and supporting all who took part in the sport. Mr Deputy Speaker, John s death is a great loss for the swimming community in Macarthur and across the globe. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him and remembered for his selfless dedication to helping others. My thoughts and prayers go to his family at this sad time and to all who knew this great man. Rest in Peace John. You were loved and adored by your family, friends and community. Macarthur is a better place because of you. It is a fun and social morning. All club members are welcome, so if you are able, come down and join us, it is a good way to kick off Christmas. Metro South West Open Water and Sydney Metro Championships Congratulations to all those who swam at these two meets our results were strong at both. Not an easy thing to do mixing Open Water and pool swimming over consecutive weekends (and then State Open Water this weekend). I know the results will be mentioned elsewhere in the newsletter. Well done to those who qualified for Nationals at Open Water. Metro was excellent we finished 15 th overall. Of the 29 swimmers we had swimming there 15 finished in the top 10 (many with multiple top ten finishes). Dominic won Gold in the 100 fly, Patrick won two silvers, Gary also won silver and Rachel Robinson won two bronze medals. Good luck to all at State Open Water this weekend Last Club Night for the Year Friday 20th December Just a reminder our final club night for the year and our Christmas party will be on December 20 th and we will be starting early at 6:00pm. Not sure if we will have the pool monster (as council are still working out what guidelines they need to follow when using a pool monster). Santa will make an appearance with a little something for the kids. We will have some novelty races and of course the coin chase in the pool (sadly Bob won t here to run it this time), should be a relaxing, fun evening. BBQ will run as normal but we will only ask for a gold coin donation. Christmas and New Year I will take this opportunity to thank our committee for their tireless work over the past 12 months. The work you do is greatly appreciated. To all have a blessed and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Travel safely and enjoy the holidays. I look forward the seeing you all back on pool deck next year!! BULLI BEACH I love traditions, particularly at this time of year. One of our club traditions is the Bulli Beach training session & breakfast on Christmas Eve. We meet down there at 7:00am. The kids (and anyone else who feels inclined) will go off on a run and swim with Justin. A free breaky of bacon and egg sandwiches (no runny eggs Chris!) is provided for all swimmers and parents. (The café is open for those who need a caffeine fix, or something more substantial.) The older squad kids do their Secret Santa, Justin and the coaches say a few words (Bob will be there), and we are finished by 9:00am. 7 Sudden passing of John Saliba Life Member Campbelltown Amateur Swim Club Inc It is with great sadness that we inform you of the sudden passing of John Saliba on Friday morning 22nd November John was a Life Member and a 9 year former President of Campbelltown Amateur Swim Club. He together with son Mark and former Club and Australian coach Alan Thompson were pioneers and champions of Open Water Swimming in Australia. John travelled the world as son's Mark handler, forging Australia's reputation in the sport. His contributions, influence and legacy to the swimming community were across the board. It ranged from a Club and local level right through to District, State, National and Internationally. He served as a Technical Official at all of those levels. Much of the documentation and policy on Open Water Swimming at a State Level was produced by John. He also was the Australian Open Water Team Manager for many years and as recent as For those lucky enough to know John personally, the love and pride John had for his family was always evident. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go to his wife Carol, sons Matthew and Mark and their respective families. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
