3 Another month has come and gone, but it has been a fun month at the GYC. Once again Mother Nature did not want to cooperate with us. Our Annual GYC Flag Raising Ceremony was forced indoors, but the GYC Entertainment Committee and Staff rose to the challenge and pulled off a great Ceremony and Party. May has proven to be another great month at the club, beginning with the Cinco de Mayo kick off party followed by our Opening Day Ceremony & Flag Raising, Mother s Day Brunch, Ship Island Rendezvous and ending with the Galveston to Gulfport Regatta. This time of the year is when your Powerboat Committee gets going with their activities. As this issue is being published the Chandeleur Rendezvous where Marvin Koury, of the Rufnek II fishing team, will try to defend his Trout King title and the crew of the Madame II (banana boat) will do anything in their power to dethrone the King. Rumors have it that Dr. Pierce, a member of that other boat, has already caught and froze the winning fish. On a serious note, we have had a problem recently with non members using our launch ramp and fish station. Please lock the gates when you are finished and do not give the gate code out. This is one of our many privileges of being a member of the GYC. Also many clubs along the coast have seen an increase in theft at their marinas so please have locks on your motors and keep valuables out of site. We look forward to a very exciting and eventful summer at the club. Try your best to attend as many social activities as you can.it s not too early to mark your calendar for our 4 th of July Celebration and viewing of the wonderful firework display provided by the City of Gulfport. Look for details that will be provided by the club through signage, e-blast and The Log. Laurence Hage GYC Commodore Bring your own Booze (?) Gulfport Yacht Club Rules, revised 2011 Summer is upon us, and we are going to have some fun the open deck, the pool, the Tiki Bar, etc. Oh boy! Fun, fun and more fun! On the coast, fun is usually defined as including alcohol and good food. Just think, we can bring our own booze, grill our own food and really have some fun. Right? Nope, fun needs to be redefined. Club Rules, Section XII, Subsection 5, provides this redefinition. It states that: No food or beverages may be brought to the club without the permission of the General Manager or his or her designee. In other words, plan your fun without food or beverage or at least coordinate your outing with the general manager. This sounds rather harsh. After all, during the nineties didn t a group of sailors (i.e. real boaters) sponsor, during the summer months, what they termed as the Thursday night beer-can races? Not only did they ace, but they also brought their own food and drink and cooked, drank, and ate downstairs, all with the knowledge and permission of the club which provided the salad for each outing; and now, we have almost monthly a Steak Night. Spawned during the post-katrina trailer days, club members bring their own steaks and cook them outside using yacht club grills. Veggies, etc. are mostly provided pot luck by the participants. Those were and are fun events, and they may or may not have been conducted with the specific consent of the General Manager; but he at least condones them. After all, the Steak Nights are quarterbacked by no one less than the Commodore, and numerous members participate. These events do not need to be defended. They are really Club functions. It is felt that Subsection 5 was not meant to prevent outings like the Steak Night nor the Beer Can Races. So, as a caveat to members: If you have a private party or a party of any nature, for adults and/or children, that you want to have at GYC, confer first with the General Manager. If you alone or with some buddies want a few drinks and food, don t bring your drinks and/or food acquired elsewhere to the club until you ve talked with the General Manager. To further support this caveat, Club Rules, Section III, Subsection 5m provides that... bringing food and/or beverages on Club property without permission of the General Manager is grounds for suspension of Club membership. But does this apply to persons bringing booze and/or food to their boats? Answer: Always confer with the General Manager. Rules and Bylaws Committee GYC BINGO Next Bingo is July 7 at 6:30pm!

This is a party you will not want to miss.

5 We had a great May at the Club and I m looking forward to an exciting June. Despite the bad weather for some of the events the parties went on and the members in attendance had a great time. I have had numerous compliments about our Mother s Brunch and would like to thank our Staff for a job well done!! Mark your calendars in June for the following upcoming events: Sunday Jazz Brunch, June 10 with music by Jesse Hill, Slip Island Party, Saturday, June 16, Father s Day Brunch, Sunday, June 17, Sunset Sunday, June 24 and Beer Tasting Dinner June 28 featuring Lazy Magnolia, Mississippi Brewery. We encourage all members to utilize our facilities and services. However, when planning an outdoor deck or pool party you must contact the office to make arrangements with details. There are some Club Rules that need to be discussed before the event. I have posted in this Log a copy of the deck party agreement for your review. When having any deck activity or pool party this agreement must be signed and approved by management. This will simply keep us organized from double bookings. Summer is an extremely busy time at the club with a number of children using our facilities, having fun at the beach, sailing and enjoying the pool with family and friends. I need to mention a few things to keep in mind from a safety point of view. Parents please remind your children running in the Clubhouse, Tiki Bar Area, Parking Lot and Pool is not permitted. We have Wait Staff serving hot food on trays that could become a disaster if a child accidently runs in front of the server. Also, the child could slip and fall on a wet or greasy area from food production and hurt themselves. The parking lot is always a concern of mine because drivers can not always see children especially if they are running. The rocks on the beach around the water have very sharp shells that could cut your foot or the loose rocks could become a hazard. Please try to stay away from these areas. Children are not allowed to sit at the Tiki Bar or Main Bar where alcohol beverages are sold. Lastly, the Clubhouse is not a playground. We have several events and production going on all the time and your children exploring or playing hide in seek in these areas is not permitted. The safety of your children, members, guests and staff is a high priority for Management and the Board. Let s be Safe and have a Fun summer at GYC!!! As promised each month I will ask a Trivia question in my letter. The first member who brings me the correct answer in when dining at the club on a Friday will receive a $20.00 gift certificate. May s answer 1988 was provided by Mr. Michael Schrantz, Congratulations! Trivia Question for June: In what year was the City of Gulfport, MS incorporated? Good Luck! See you at GYC, Steve Chatelain General Manager Our annual mother/daughter luncheon was well attended by over 80 mothers/daughters/granddaughters! Our guest of honor was Gene Hopkins Golden Parkerson, daughter of the founder of our club, Dr. Arvah St. Clair Hopkins. In honoring Gene, we were told the story of the Skipperettes, the forerunner of the present Ladies Auxiliary. Linda Goesling presented an historical accounting of the original Skipperettes in an article by Dorothy Broussard in 1937: Men have always been vain creatures, and according to their own belief (and they really believe it that s the strange part) they know everything. Men in Gulfport are no exception and the smug expression worn by all yachtsmen when they have sailed a victorious race, and the satisfaction that the yacht club was complete within itself proved too much for the feminine element not that the men had not been exceptionally generous in letting the women claim club membership, but they were careful to let them know that they were no integral part of it, and allowed women to sail only when it did not interfere with other plans. Therefore, it fell to the lot of the women to show that the Yacht Club was founded on brawn alone, that Skipperettes could show prowess at the tiller and could prove themselves indispensable to the club as a whole. Thus, the Skipperettes organization (Ladies Auxiliary) was born. The yachtsmen were a little dubious about the organization of the women (Dr. Hopkins being our sole champion). When the idea of making money for the club was mentioned, the men became solicitous. It was very fortunate that it was decided to let the ladies sail as the very first trophy that was brought to the yacht club was not by a big strong man of the sea, but by a member of the less husky sex, a Skipperette. This first glory was won by the Yacht Club in competition with other members of the Gulf Yachting Association. The winning Skipperette was Miss Attwood Harding. She won the cup in the fish class races that opened the 1937 summer racing season in Biloxi. When the Skipperettes finished their sailing years, they formed the Gulfport Yacht Club Ladies Auxiliary. Today our Auxiliary encourages women sailors and we just presented our sailing director, Sam V. with a check for $ toward a traveling female coach who will instruct at the girl s sailing clinic this summer. Bridge winners for May were Helen McDonald and Willidora Kremer. Thanks to Linda Diorio who is teaching a beginning bridge class to auxiliary members. They are looking forward to joining in the monthly Ladies Auxiliary bridge group. The Ladies Auxiliary is happy to be supporting the Leukemia Cup Regatta Fund Raiser. Pass Christian will sponsor the Regatta which will be held in July. We say a special thanks to all members of the GYC who donated to the Leukemia Society by buying the sailboats which are displayed in the Chart Room. Water Aerobics began on Wednesday after Memorial Day and will continue every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8:00 a.m. This low impact exercise is good for all aspects of the body so come out and get your day started right! Cost will be $5.00 per class Our June luncheon will feature a presentation by WINGS from the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center. Hostesses will be DianeKiser, Charlotte Orr and Becky White. Dottie T. Long, Auxiliary President
