4 THE JESMOND HISTORY The Jesmond Picture House opened in May 1921 and was the most lavish of a handful of cinemas in Newcastle in the 1920s. The building was influential in Jesmond s culture for more than 70 years until its doors closed for the last time in 1993 falling into ruin, beyond repair, and finally demolition. The entirely new development, The Jesmond, is a fitting and magnificent tribute on the site of the original building, and reflects in a contemporary way the ground-breaking Jesmond Cinema.
