2 ONE MAN S OPINION We have a less than adequate food service offering for our members and we are working on an improvement in that area. As most of you know, we have had a contract with El Niguel for them to provide food service to us in the Tee House. When I first bought the club in 1984, this food service was a BIG benefit to LNRC members. However, in the last 20 years, it has been less and less a benefit to our members, due to the cost at the Tee House, and the lack of service while paying an 18% service charge. The service charge, plus the sales tax made the cost VERY high for a family or an individual, thus usage of the Tee House has fallen off drastically. We are in negotiations with the El Niguel Board to assume the management of the Tee house, even if that means we have to BUY the property and the business from them. We have to work out several details with the city and the fire department before we can make an offer to buy the Tee House but we are working with them AS I TYPE. If we do take it over we will still operate food service for the golfers, and we will staff one window for the golfers making the turn. We will open the window on the Tennis club side of the Tee House and provide snacks, drinks, sandwiches, soups, salads, plus an assortment of healthy juices for all LNRC members. We will enclose the unused patio which is on the tennis club side of the Tee House and convert this area into a full service Bar. We will make the inside of the existing Tee House into a Sports Bar, with TV's throughout, and a Sports Bar menu for a table service during lunch, plus a specialty dinner a few nights a week. I feel this will increase the value of being a member of LNRC, as we will be able to control the quality and the price of the food we will offer to our members. I will be able to give everyone much more information in the near future, as we get decisions from the City Planners and the Fire Department and the Board at El Niguel. If anyone has any thoughts on this, please them to me at ces@spearmanclubs.com. I hope I can count on all members supporting the new food service arrangement if we are able to work things out. Cecil E. Spearman, CEO It s been a rainy month of February and I hope many of you, who couldn t get out on the courts, tried out some of the Group Exercise classes. Jennifer, our Fitness Coordinator has worked hard to put together a great variety of classes that cover everyone s interest. Hopefully, March will bring us more sunny days so that you will all be able to get a lot of time out on the courts. As always, we have great events and activities in store for you. Make sure to check out the Calendar of Events that was sent to you earlier this year, or check it out online. Have a great month and see you on the courts.. I hope you got to see a little of the Pro Womens event that was just played at LNRC The week was filled with all we could handle, that was for sure. The courts were wet every morning, and the club was busy as always. So when we did get on to play tennis, it was just amazing to watch. Our winner was from France and the finalist was from Luxemborg, so it was an international affair. I want to thank all the members for allowing us to give back to the USTA and have this event here. What I hoped to happen is that all members came away with some appreciation of the work and dedication it takes to be at the level of these young women. WE have some fun events coming up in March and the first one is the Adult / Child tourney on the 6 th. It is a round robin fun day of tennis and pizza afterwards. I hope each adult or parent will get involved with this fun tennis adventure. Indian Wells is coming up and the buzz is already starting about the week of tennis that is out in the desert! Whether you re going to see Justine or Rafa, or Maria and Roger, the tennis is awesome and the weather and atmosphere is perfect. Lastly, we have the first mixed doubles night, as the weather gets better so will the turnout for this event. Anne and the pros will be putting on these events of tennis and dinner that will have a theme to each one. Come meet new friends and play social tennis. Let s get this rain behind us and see you on the courts a Yoga represents the union of Ha, "sun," and tha, "moon." 3 Love Tennis for Fitness A fuzzy yellow ball can have remarkable power: Tennis can whittle your middle; improve strength and flexibility; improve balance, agility, and overall coordination; and get you into great shape. Plus, it s inexpensive, widely accessible year-round, and the whole family can play. Little wonder it s the fastest-growing traditional sport in America, based on statistics tracked by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association. Molly Ferris, 45, of Omaha, Nebraska, is one of those newly enchanted by an ancient sport created by European monks several thousand years ago. She started hitting the ball around two years ago after her kids took lessons and now plays in a women s league. She s met new friends and even takes a one-hour cardio tennis class once a week in which she does drills to music. Tennis really works your core, and after years of running, it s nice to do something different, she says. A 135-pound woman playing an hour of tennis can burn 420 calories during a singles match, according to the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center. An average-sized man playing a similar match burns about 600 calories, making tennis t one of the most calorie-scorching activities out there. See You on the Courts! 4 LNRC Collegiate Report Smith Making Impact As Freshman For UC Irvine UC Irvine freshman Kristina Smith (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) grappled with opponents from three nationally ranked programs and fared well, claiming Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week (Feb. 1-7) accolades. Smith, playing at No. 6 singles, defeated Lyndsay Kinstler of No. 9 USC by a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 score. She also thumped Emma Cioffi of No. 42 San Diego State 6-3, 6-1, helping the Anteaters to a 5-2 team win. Smith's only setback was to UCLA's Maya Johansson. However, Smith partnered with Brooke Bartlett to win No. 3 doubles matches against USC and San Diego State. The # 51 ranked Anteaters are 3-3 overall with a conference record of 1-1. #11 Bulldogs Men s Tennis Wins Trio of Matches The No. 11 University of Redlands men s tennis team captured a trio of victories during a busy slate of competition. The bulldogs took care of Cal Tech, Biola and Cal Poly Pomona (a Div II opponent). Playing # 1 singles and doubles junior Cameron Spearman has led the team to a 5-0 overall record and 2-0 in their conference. Bucs Dominate Singles Matches in 5-2 Win Over SCSU The Buccaneers improved to 2-0 on the season with victories over Campbell University and South Carolina State. Junior Brooke Pletcher had a good win vs. SCSU at # 4 singles and has been playing #2 doubles for the Bucs. Charleston Southern University has upcoming matches vs. UNC Asheville, Liberty, Gardner-Webb, UNC Greensboro, Jackson St, U Mass, and UNC Wilmington. Orange Off To a Strong Start The Syracuse women s tennis team has begun the season with a 6-2 record. They are 2-0 in Big East play and their only losses have come against ranked foes # 16 Michigan and # 61 Princeton. Christina Tan has opened up with a 5-1 record in doubles play with wins at #1 position over Eastern Michigan, Michigan, & Columbia, Wittier College Poets Kady Oliker and Lauren Gelgur picked up their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at No. 1 doubles but it wasn't enough as Occidental ran the table in singles en route to the 8-1 win. Oliker and Gelgur won a thrilling match at the top doubles spot, 9-8 (7-4). Lauren picked up a great win vs. Biola University s #2 player in 3 sets. The Poets are 2-5 on the season. Saddleback s Women s Tennis Dominates in Ventura Saddleback was impressive at the two-day tournament in Ventura, defeating Cerritos College 9-0, Rio Hondo College 9-0 and host Ventura College, 8-1. The Gauchos were never challenged during the first two matches on Friday, winning all 30 sets and losing just 11 games total in the second match against Rio Hondo. Saddleback then ran past host Ventura College on Saturday, losing the opening match before ripping off eight straight wins in dominating the Pirates. Karley Pletcher and Avriel Tomaiko are at #1 doubles and playing #3 & #4 singles respectively. They both have a perfect 6-0 record in singles and doubles! Saddleback improved to 6-0 on the season with the trio of wins and will open up Orange Empire Conference play when they travel to Fullerton College to take on the Hornets. Freshman Avriel Tomaiko & Karley Pletcher will be staring for the Saddleback Gauchos. They look to take on Santa Monica, Palomar, Grossmont, Fullerton, Irvine Valley & Cypress in February.
