Beach Volleyball in Israel - History and Development Dear Beach Volleyball fans, dear athletes, I would like to warmly welcome all of you to the 2011 CEV U20 Beach Volleyball European Championship that is taking place this year in Tel Aviv. We are very glad that the Israeli Volleyball Association submitted its bid for the organization of this competition and we were hence able to opt for a completely new location European Beach Volleyball players may not be that familiar with, as this is really the right way to go in order to enlarge the scenario of our events across the Old Continent. On behalf of the European Volleyball Confederation I would therefore sincerely thank the local Organizing Committee and promoters for all their devotion in the preparation of this event which is mainly conceived as an exhibition of the most promising European talents whose likes will certainly fire up the Beach Volleyball arena in the years to come. I am convinced that being played in such an amazing natural and historical scenario this year s edition of the U20 European Championship will be crowned with enormous success and many people there will be frenzied to join that very special atmosphere Beach Volleyball is regularly able to set up on site. Beach Volleyball competitions are indeed enjoying an incessantly increasing popularity throughout Europe, attracting more and more fans, athletes, media and sponsors. So I expect Tel Aviv will be also touched by this positive fever and possibly turn into a major location of additional Beach Volleyball events in the near future. ENTRY FEE For the participation of each team in the Championships, the respective National Federation shall pay an entry fee of 100,- EUR and a contribution of 50,- EUR per delegation member per day (five days in total). When a National Federation/team withdraws from the Championships later than ten (10) days before the start, the entry fee is due except for health reasons of a player. No licenses are issued for this competition. COMPETITION FORMAT The Main Draw is played in six Preliminary Pools of four teams. BEacH VoLLEYBaLL IN ael History and Development Beach volleyball is an Olympic discipline, since Atlanta 1996, played outdoors, barefoot on sand court with a ball, by teams of two people separated by net. Beach volleyball was born in the Southern California beaches in the late twenties and enjoys rapid international expansion thanks to FIVB programs, committed partners, Organizers, Officials and professional athletes, for the enjoyment of millions of participating players throughout the world. With is low cost to set up its easy to start to play in any place and any time. History and Development: You can see the origins of Beach Volleyball during The game of Volleyball which gave also the root of Beach Volleyball was invented in 1895 by an American named William G. Morgan who was the physical director. Morgan s blended the elements of basketball, baseball, tennis and handball to create the game for his classes of businessmen that desired a new game with less physical contact than basketball. Beach Volleyball is a new sport in Israel. The first nets were seen on Israel beaches at the beginning of the 80 s in the last decade. Some Israeli players came from the USA and brought with them this new sport. The first Beach Volleyball championship was organized in 1990 in the city of Haifa. In 1995, for the first time, a Beach Volleyball National Championship for schools took place. 90 teams (3 players a team) joined the one day tournament. In time, this event grew larger and today it is one of the country s biggest events. In 1996 within the framework of the Israel Association Volleyball annual program, 50 Beach Volleyball areas were planned. That is, 2 courts in every area. 20 Beach Volleyball centers across the beach were also planned, to be completed by Sadly, this vision was hardly realized. In 1900 Canada became the first country outside the USA to take up Volleyball, followed Cuba in 1906, Japan in 1908, china in 1911, France in 1915 and Italy, Russia and India in The rest of Europe started to play according the American expeditionary forces during the world war. During Beach Volleyball appeared in France, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Latvia. The sport is associated with the beach, the sun and modern music, the sport turns into a real show. In Brazil, the first tournament sponsored by a newspaper publishing company takes place. The can be considered the period of the international growth. During those years Beach Volleyball reaches international level with USA and Brazil leading the way. The sport becomes professional and international , the Olympic period, Beach volleyball gained Olympic status at Atlanta 1996 and continued its success at Sydney Olympic games 2000 and Athens Olympic games 2004, as well as Beijing 2008 Olympics. In 1998, the Volleyball Association set up a committee that considered management issues and development, in the industry, and in the same year, the first Beach Volleyball competition for academic institutes was held. The sport development and its potential for achievements in the international arena led to a mutual program by the Volleyball Association and the Israeli Olympic Committee to move forward both male and female pairs who would train and compete abroad. All this was for the purpose of training them for the 2004 Olympic Games. In this program, plenty of resource were put in but it failed and terminated several months later. In 2003, annual activities were split in two: Indoor Volleyball season between September and April and Beach Volleyball between June and August. The Beach Volleyball leagues of clubs were set up. In 2005, Israel hosted the European Beach Volleyball Championship under 20. It was the first international event that was hosted in Israel for decade. The event, which was very well organized, received plenty of praise from the 20 participating countries and from the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV). The Federation tried to use the good momentum form the European Championship and decided to make some actions to develop the sport. Some professional Beach Volleyball coaches were brought to Israel to give perfecting to Israel s coaches. Corresponding, the preparing of some pairs for the European and World Championships started
