November 2013 Welcome to a latest edition of the NESA Newsletter. November has been a busy and very successful month for many of the NESA students at the College. The students are now well into the swing of representing the college in their various sports and, thanks to a much milder November than this time last year, all teams have been getting onto the pitch and court and excelling. In this months edition you can read about all of the latest fixtures across all of the different academy sports, from Rugby to Basketball. We also have information on past students and volunteer events that our students have recently been involved in. We hope you enjoy reading about the students recent successes. The NESA Team

Former NESA Rugby Player Succeeding after TyneMet Former NESA Rugby Player Ryan Yellop has been keeping himself very busy after finishing his A Level courses last year and finds himself continuing to achieve both academically and on the pitch. Ryan completed his studies at TyneMet after 2 years was accepted onto a Law Degree at Northumbria University which he started in September. As well as continuing his studies after TyneMet Ryan has also maintained his skills on the rugby pitch. This month Ryan made his first appearance for Whitley Bay Rockcliff 1 st XV managing to score his first try minutes after coming onto the pitch. Ryan s success after studying at TyneMet comes as no surprise to TyneMet Head Coach Jack Lambert. Ryan was a superb student throughout his time at TyneMet and actually won the NESA Rugby Student Athlete award at the end of his time here. He managed his commitments to the Rugby Programme and to his studies very well and left TyneMet with fantastic grades because of that. Ryan also left the college as the highest scoring player in TyneMet history so it is great that he continues to sneak over the line as he steps up to the senior game. I am sure Ryan will continue to progress as a player and a person and I look forward to hearing about his continued successes! NESA MMA Enrichment Sessions Flying With it being the start of a New Year students at TyneMet could choose various enrichment activities to take part in. This year more than ever before students wanted to participate in Mixed Martial arts, which is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. Mixed Martial Arts comprises various disciplines like Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Kick Boxing to name a few. It has been great to see such an interest from both sexes with a lot of students having previous experience in certain disciplines like boxing and Judo. The enrichment session caters for all abilities, novice through to some students who are competing in semi-professional bouts. The sessions are devised to develop fitness, teach self-defence, build self-esteem and develop confidence. The first session (Monday pm in the dance studio) is ran by our own Strength and Conditioning coach Chris Bunten, who has been a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA for 4 years. This session focuses on the ground work looking at locks and holds whilst bringing in self-defence elements as well as throws. The second session (Wednesday pm in the dance studio) is a Striking session led by World Champion kick boxer James Watling. James is a very technical striker who combines boxing combinations with various elbow strikes, Knees and kicks. As a coach James breaks down combinations, helps to develop speed and power as well as focusing on the fundamentals like defence and footwork. What the students have to say: I really enjoy the ground work we do, it really compliments my judo game and has helped take me to a higher level when competing Leah, Queen Alexandra Sixth Form Student. I come a long because there is a great atmosphere, we learn various self-defence techniques and it is a good way to get to fit! Kirsty Jackson, Uniformed Services TyneMet Student.

TyneMet Titans Advance in National Cup TyneMet vs. Myerscough College TyneMet continued their positive run of form defeating Myerscough College in the BCS National Elite Cup. The second round game took place at the Coast Road Campus, home of the Titans. The game was well contested throughout, however a 13 2 run at the end of the second period allowed the hosts to take a commanding lead into the half time break. Danny Horta Darrington was again a standout performer for TyneMet with an impressive stat line of 25 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocks. It was a great team game today from all of our guys. Two of players played through illness and injury and it spurred the rest of the team on to try and control the effort levels. I thought we executed at the offensive end really well and shared the ball fantastically said Head Coach Marc Steutel. TyneMet 3 rd Team Vs Hartlepool 6 th Form 2 nd TyneMet Football 3 rd team played Hartlepool 6 th Form 2 nd team in a tough encounter but came away with a 2-1 win. A hardworking team performance on a difficult pitch was needed from the TyneMet players and they duly delivered. The TyneMet diamond formation in midfield proved the correct choice as early on the midfield battle seemed to be won and provided the front 2 with superb support. Luke Malloy was a handful once again and rightly got himself on the score sheet. The defence also put in a solid game and having Joel Robson back in the team with the addition of Kris Langley helped with communication and organisation. Goal Scorers: Luke Malloy and Ryan Nelson (Pen). Danny Horta Darrington was also upbeat after the game I am happy with how we all played today. We are a close group of players and we love playing together. Myerscough are a tough team and we are already looking forward to playing them next week. Horta Darrington was ably assisted carrying the scoring load by Eddie Mathew (21 points) & Alan Slasor (14 points). For the visitors T. Samuel led the way with 21 and M. Dennis followed with 12 points. Both teams will have 6 days preparation time till next Wednesday (4 th December) when the fixture will take place in the same venue for the league rematch.

TyneMet Academy Girls Benefit from Guest Coaching Session On Monday 18 th November TyneMet Women s Basketball Academy benefited from Northumbria Head Coach Josh Merrington s expertise in a guest coaching session. Merrington has just been announced as the England Under 16 s Girls National Team Assistant Coach, alongside his duties at the Division 1 powerhouse Northumbria University. Merrington was keen to come in and work with the talented TyneMet youngsters hoping they would progress onto Northumbria following completion of their course at TyneMet. The players in attendance were second years Abby & Becky Shields, Sophie Heslop, Kendal Barclay alongside first year Levi Williams. The session consisted of some fundamental skills and drills alongside having an insight what it takes to make it on the elite level. The girls were full of praise for the session. We had a great time today and it was good to do some of the same drills that the division one team will do said Kendal Barclay. TyneMet Basketball Staff Recognised on National Level Basketball Head Coach Marc Steutel and Academy Strength & Conditioning Coach Chris Bunten have both earned England Basketball National Team coaching positions. Steutel was named as Under 18 s Men Lead Assistant Coach for the team who will compete in Turkey next summer at the Division A European Championships competing against powerhouse nations such as Spain, Germany & France. This position follows on from a summer of working with the Great Britain Under 20 s as a second assistant role. Steutel is heavily involved with basketball across the region and more importantly Heads up our very own Basketball Development Centre. Steutel was understandably pleased I am thrilled to have been appointed with this position and look forward to representing my country again. It s a testament to the players I work with on a daily basis at TyneMet and in the region and how they develop. I can t wait to bring these experiences back with me to TyneMet to continue and help players develop within our own set up. Bunten has been appointed to work with several teams due to his unique skill set. He has been appointed 2 nd assistant to the Under 16 s girl s team due to the successful work he has delivered as part of the regional under 15 s girls programme. He will also be overseeing Strength & Conditioning programmes for all members of the England Under 15 s Girls & Boy s programme which is an outstanding achievement. Chris was also extremely upbeat about his appointments I am thankful for this opportunity to work with my national teams. I feel have been able to achieve this by the positive strength and conditioning and coaching work I have done with TyneMet and the North East Region. I am also looking forward to bringing back new ideas back to our academy students across all sports. NESA are wishing these coaches all the best and will be following their progress! Abby Shields was equally as positive I am still deciding on which university I want to attend so today was a good chance to experience the coaching I would receive at Northumbria. I really enjoyed it. Coach Merrington also enjoyed the session I am really grateful to TyneMet for allowing me to come in and work with these talented youngsters. I am working hard to grow our university programme and to have the girl s progress on from here to Northumbria would be great. They have experienced life as student athlete at TyneMet so will be greatly prepared if they choose the elite programme at Northumbria. The girls will be continuing their development with games against Blackpool on the 3 rd December and Holy Cross College on the 4 th.

TyneMet vs Bishop Burton TyneMet followed up their win in the cup last week with an excellent 3-1 away win over Bishop Burton College from Hull. The game kicked off on the superb playing surface at Bishop Burton College and it was the visitors who threatened first when Dillon Blake went close after 6 minutes on the clock. This opening salvo was a warning that wasn t heeded by the home team and the visitors made it 1-0 on 14 minutes after some good work by Mikel Thompson down the right hand side saw him cross for Shane Jones who cleverly worked the ball between his feet to fire past the helpless keeper. This seemed to unsettle the home side who tried hard to threaten but were kept firmly at bay by some stubborn defending by the TyneMet rear guard. TyneMet made it 2-0 following a long forward ball that wasn t dealt with by the home defence and Thompson was the most lively to latch onto it and he shot early past the home keeper low into the bottom corner. Michael Baxter scored the final goal in TyneMet s cup win TyneMet Players Volunteering for Falcons TyneMet Players Lee Gallon and Gareth Henderson have been out in the community helping to make rugby happen this month after volunteering for the Newcastle Falcons Community Foundation. On 30 th November the Falcons hosted Harlequins at Kingston Park and before the game U13 and U12 sides from as far away as Scunthorpe were competing in a tournament. Lee and Gareth helped ensure the competition ran as smoothly as possible on the day. After the event the players received tickets to the Falcons clash with Harlequins along with a drink and some food, as Gareth said, A warm hog roast wrap and a rugby game, what more could you want on a sunday? Both players are TyneMet stalwarts, with Lee in his 2 nd year and Gareth in his 3 rd, and throughout their time at TyneMet they have taken full advantage of the voluntary opportunities on offer to NESA Rugby Players meaning both have fantastic work experience ready for life after college. Lee said I am looking to go work at Camp America in the summer so to have experience working alongside a professional club like the Newcastle Falcons Community Foundation is great. I have learned alot and really enjoyed helping the young players get on the pitch. The home side did however get back into the game on 44 minutes when a cross was hit against the TyneMet defenders arm from close range and the referee harshly awarded a penalty kick, which was dispatched past keeper Callum Straker despite him going the correct way. TyneMet had further chances to put the game beyond any doubt as Jones went close on 55 minutes following a good break involving Michael Baxter and Dillon Blake. Marcus McCreedy also went close following some neat passing play and the same player was on hand at the other end to head the ball clear from close to the goal line following a series of dangerous set plays from the home team. Following a lengthy delay of over 30 minutes following an injury to a home player who needed hospital treatment following an accidental clash the game restarted with the final 15 minutes to play. During this last period it was TyneMet who finished the game stronger and finally put the result beyond any doubt when a left wing corner was delivered into the box by Jones and Baxter was on hand to fire home to send the points back up north. Final Score Bishop Burton 1 3 Tyne Met College

Women s Football Development Centre While our women footballers train hard to keep their unbeaten league run and stay top of the BCS Table, we take a closer look at some of our players and their experiences their currently having OFF the pitch. It is worth mentioning that our striker Lauren Driver (ESFA Trialist), Centre Back Melissa Scott, Winger Jade Anderson and Centre Midfielder Jasmine Trundley are all currently playing for Newcastle United Women s Reserves, as well as Captain Megan McKenzie playing alongside Head Coach Natalie Henderson in Newcastle United s First Team. This means not only are they training on a regular basis for TyneMet College and playing in competitive fixtures on a Wednesday, they are also training for NUWFC twice a week and playing in premier league games on a Sunday afternoon. So far the girls have managed this fantastically and look fit and on form in the current season. In addition to this, many of our women's footballers are also taking up their coaching qualifications and are currently working with junior football teams within the North East. Melissa Scott is currently working with Blakelaw United U11 Boys, Megan McKenzie with North Shields U11 Girls, Lauren Driver works with West Denton U11 Boys, Jade Anderson is currently working with Grainger Park U7 Girls & Boys and Newcastle East End s Becky Pears is presently working with her clubs U9 Girls. Despite all the current success, the girls still must work hard in the classroom to achieve their grades, otherwise their training is cut and games are missed. So far the girls have managed this well and important players such as Ellen Martin (our previous women of the match vs. Gateshead), Kati Donnelly, Emily Glass & Carly Davies are all contributing to their teams success. On a final note, the Women s Football Development Centre is in good form and continues to work hard with Head Coach Natalie Henderson and Assistant Coach Robyn Parker to secure their place at top the league. The women play their home games at Walker Activity Dome on a Wednesday afternoon (2pm KO s) and you can access their league table at: Captain Megan McKenzie Newcastle United First Team (left), Melissa Scott Newcastle United Reserves (centre) Lauren Driver Newcastle United Reserves (right)

TyneMet Rugby Unfortunate in loss to Hartlepool FE Missing key players a young TyneMet side travelled to Hartlepool on a surprisingly mild November day. With a long list of injuries to players the side walking out onto the pitch were missing Captain Dan Ward (ankle), Anthony Jordan (car crash), Cameron Walker (hand), Harrison Brodie (nose), Daniel Mackenzie (ill) and Callum Thompson (knee) all of whom would usually be starting players. The team was boosted however by Lee Gallon who passed a late fitness test to play and captain the side for the first time in his TyneMet career. A young and determined group walked off the bus into the changing room and when the first whistle sounded they showed a love a contact few would of expected. Early exchanges between the two sides gave Hartlepool FE field position inside the TyneMet half and they continually tried to batter through the TyneMet defences. However the TyneMet team were in no mood to give away points and continually rebuffed the Hartlepool players. Dan Wrigley was a constant threat in the breakdown and continually turned over ball all game. Jordan Williams and Craig Laing were also in a hard hitting mood as TyneMet made tackle after tackle. Having played most of the half tiredness did begin to set in and despite a sterling effort Hartlepool eventually worked the ball into space and went over the try line. However from the kick off at half time TyneMet made it clear they were not giving up. Keiran Lydall and Declan Williamson giving the side a great platform and scaring the Hartlepool defence. Unfortunately a penalty given away relieved the pressure on the Hartlepool line. The amount of tackles eventually seemed to catch with TyneMet in the second half as their intensity in defence just couldn t be kept at the same level for the full game. The score was 7-0 with 3 minutes left on the clock however late lapses from tired players gave Hartlepool 2 quick scores at the end of the game. Coach Jack Lambert said, These young players have really stepped out of their shells today and shown what good young rugby players they are. To see them put their bodies on the line in defence and play as a team the way they have is fantastic and will only help them improve as players. Jordan Williams and Craig Laing were in great form for TyneMet
