TyneMet Racks up the awards at BCS College Sport Week Colleges from across Britain descended upon St George s Park to take part in the nationwide colleges conference and award ceremonies organised by BCS. Tyne Metropolitan College was represented all week by staff and students. The Coaching Academy was recognised by BCS with a shortlist for the Male Student Volunteer of the Year award. Scott Maughan is currently in his first year at TyneMet, studying Public services. Scott signed up to the Coaching Academy when he started at the college and he is always one of the first to put his name down for the various volunteering opportunities on offer. This has led to him being a National Young Advisor as part of the National Charity StreetGames at their countrywide residential in April. Scott was also nominated for the Male Student Volunteer of the Year award having already been successful in winning the North East award. He was invited to the College Sport Week awards where it was announced that he was the National Runner up! Scott is pictured to the right with Kate Grey, GB Paralympic swimmer, and his award. Also at the College Sport Week TyneMet had a student representing it for the full week. Kendal Barclay has been the North East representative as part of the BCS National Youth Council for her two years at TyneMet. The role involves her getting her views and opinions and those of her fellow students across the national stage. With this role she aims to increase participation with students and undertake sports events for fundraising. Kendal has organised the 24 hour basketball fundraiser and the Lead Further Get us to the Commonwealth Games Hampden Stadium. Kendal is also involved in the National Events including the National Finals and the National College Sport Week. The photo to the right is Kendal addressing the conference delegates at the BCS sport week. Thanks to Kendal for undertaking this role throughout her time here at the college.

TyneMet Badminton Represent on the National Stage TyneMet College s Badminton Development Centre had winners in the regional competitions for both the men s singles and men s doubles competitions. This meant that the student athletes were invited to compete in the National Competitions in Bath as representation form the region. The students that attended were GarryLee McMullen for the men s singles competition and Ryan Macciocchi and Dan Wight for the men s doubles. In both competitions the athletes were split into two groups and then depending on their placing s they went through to playoffs to be positioned. The games were a best of three format first athlete to score 14 points and must win by 2 points clear. In the Men s singles GarryLee faced players from South East Itchen College, West Midlands Birmingham Met College, South West Weston College, East Midlands Moulton College and from the East SEEVIC College. GarryLee had good form and faced some excellent athletes in the group stages, he finished winning 2 games and losing 3 games placing him 4 th in the group stages. He then went onto the playoffs where he faced the 3 rd placed student from the other group who was from Scotland Ayrshire College. GarryLee beat the Scottish athlete taking him through to the playoff for the 5 th /6 th overall national position. In this game GarryLee faced a student he had played previously in the group stages and narrowly lost to. GarryLee played an excellent game that was close throughout but he missed out on the win and took the 6 th place nationally. In the Men s Doubles the boys faced from the East Hills Road 6 th form College, West Midlands Birmingham Met College, South East Peter Symonds College and Scotland Ayrshire College. TyneMet Badminton Players Represent the College at Nationals Holiday Club was a success The Easter Holidays saw TyneMet college host its regular holiday club for local children aged 6+. During the holiday club the children get involved in arts and crafts, games and some sporting activities. The sporting activities are delivered by TyneMet s very own coaching academy students. This camp we had Callum Oakley, Sophie Urwin and Daniel Wight undertake the task of keeping the children entertained with sports and activities. The volunteers did loads of different activities with children over the week including multi-sport golf, basketball, tennis, football and Danish longball to name a few. The volunteers were great and both the children and the volunteers enjoyed the week. As a thank you for their time all three volunteers received vouchers for Eldon square and a T Shirt for supporting the event. The first game the boys played they faced West Midlands on the Friday and the game was very close with each area winning a game each to take it to the final set in which TyneMet narrowly missed out. On the second day the boys faced all the other doubles within their group winning the game against the Scottish college out of the 3 games. This meant that the boys were placed 4 th in their grouping and would face the third placed pair from the other group for the first playoff fixture. Their competition was the North West double from Cardinal Newman College, the fixture was close in the first set but the pair form Tyne Metropolitan College couldn t convert and they lost the fixture. This meant that they would face the South East double form their group to compete for the 7 th /8 th position. The boys had already faced this double and knew it would be tough. Ryan and Daniel put in a valiant effort but unfortunately couldn t take the game, however they finished 8 th overall nationally which is an amazing achievement. All three of the student athletes represented the college in a very professional and courteous manner and did TyneMet proud! Well done boys! Volunteer TyneMet Students were Coaching the TyneMet Summer Camp

Volunteers Gain National Recognition for their Hard Work Congratulations to both Scott Maughan and Beth Adams who have been chosen as National Young Advisors as part of the StreetGames National programme. Scott was chosen as a young advisor for the National Residential that happened recently in Brathay, Lake District. He was involved in the planning and preparation of this event and was also on hand to run the event when all the volunteers arrived. The feedback from Scott is that he had an amazing time and gained so much confidence and knowledge from being involved. Beth was chosen to be a young advisor for the National StreetGames youth conference. The conference has not happened yet but Beth attended the recent staff conference in preparation and got to see first-hand what is involved in organising one of these massive events. She is now busy with a small team of other young advisors planning and preparing the youth event which is to be held at the end of the May. TyneMet Foundation Learning Footballers Crowned National Champions! TyneMet College s football starlets travelled to Bath to take part in the British Colleges Sport National Championship. Their Commitment shone through and they beat 10 other teams from around the country to lift the trophy and be crowned national champions. The North Tyneside College s team consisted of Christopher Adams, 18 and Corey Haikney, 20, both from Blyth, Kurtis Barnett, 19, Ali Hassan, 19, Jordan McCarthy, 17 and Mark Shaw, 19, all from Wallsend, Ryan Thompson, 17 from Shiremoor and Daniel Westerby, 18, from Walker. The lads showed commitment and dedication in all of the matches they played and executed excellent team tactics while also displaying their individual talents. Their behaviour and attitude was exemplary and they are excellent ambassadors for TyneMet College. Scott and Beth at Brathay this year Volunteering

North East College Challenge - Sport Recently College Sport Maker Sarah Bennett organised the North East College Challenge Sport competition. The event was hosted by Middlesbrough College and involved students competing in Dodgeball and Fitness testing activities to see who would win the NE College Challenge Sport element. The event saw students from Middlesbrough College, TyneMet College, New College Durham and Redcar and Cleveland College all compete in the activities. From TyneMet College the students chosen to represent us from the Sport curriculum taking part in the Dodgeball were Luke Malloy, Gareth Henderson, Cameron Walker, Abby Shields, Becky Shields, Josh Stocks and Kyle Stocks. Competing in the fitness testing were Sophie Heslop, Alex Parr and Eddie Matthew. The dodgeball tournament was a round robin where each match was a best of three game with the score adding up at the end to see the winner. Tyne Metropolitan College faced New College Durham first winning the first game, drawing the second and winning the final game taking the match. Their next opponent was Redcar and Cleveland where they lost the first two games and drew the second losing the match and finally they faced Middlesbrough college where it was a clean sweep and TyneMet won the game. The standings going into the finals were Redcar and Cleveland 1 st, Tyne Metropolitan College 2 nd, Middlesbrough College 3 rd and New College Durham 4 th. In the playoffs TyneMet faced 3 rd placed Middlesbrough College which again was a clean sweep for TyneMet 3-0, 4-0 and 6-0. The final would see TyneMet face Redcar and Cleveland looking to win the competition this time. First game was close with some dramatic catches and outs and finished as a draw 1-1, 2 nd game Redcar and Cleveland had the upper hand and won 3-1 in the last game to take the match TyneMet needed to beat Redcar and Cleveland by more than 2 players. TyneMet couldn t believe their performance and they won 6-0 taking the match and being crowned the winners of the dodgeball competition. In the fitness competition the students were being taken through their paces in the 15m sprint, Kayak machine, Push ups and bleep test. There was some great performances form the TyneMet students with Alex and Sophie both winning the boys and girls kayak competition and Eddie and Alex taking 1 st and 2 nd place in the bleep test. However it wasn t enough with Redcar and Cleveland winning the most activities and taking the fitness crown. The overall competition was close and came down to points difference which meant the final standings were: 1 st Redcar and Cleveland 2 nd TyneMet College 3 rd Middlesbrough College 4 th New College Durham Congratulations to all the students that represented TyneMet College, they did a fantastic job and showed sportsmanship and pride in representing the College.

Men s & Women s Basketball National Finals The 2014 BCS National finals was the 6 th successive appearance made by a TyneMet basketball team to represent the North East. This year similar to the previous had both TyneMet s Men and Women s teams represent the North East at the finals. The first game tipped off at 9am for the men against Filton College, who were the 2012 champions beating TyneMet in the final, so TyneMet were out for some pay back. The 10 minute game offered some fantastic passages of play with defence being the priority for both teams. Mid-way through the game scores were tied at 5-5. Filton capitalised on a few of TyneMet s turnovers to take a 7-6 lead but with under a minute to go young Eagle Eddie Matthew hit a 3 pointer to put the North East team up 9-8. The next play witnessed an aggressive drive from Filton point guard who was fouled. He went to the free throw line with 10 seconds left and calmly made both free throws giving Filton a 1 point lead. Head Coach Marc Steutel called a time out to give his team a perfectly y orchestrated play which they executed flawlessly but unfortunately the shot rimmed out and Filton held on to take the win After such a close game which saw TyneMet come out the wrong side of a 1 point game Coach Steutel fired up the troops for their next game against Derby College. Unlike the first game TyneMet came out aggressive at both ends and some strong defence by ZaK Whelan and Alex Parr helped fuel their fast break and led to them taking an early lead. Derby Coach Matt Shaw called a timeout which seemed to energise his troops and it become a 4 point game at TyneMet had far too much fire power and A-level Students Dan Wright and Andrew Green put the icing on the cake with long range jump shots to take the victory In the Men s third game of the day it would be a contest against new comers BHASVIC from Brighton. In this game it appeared that any shot BHASVIC put up would somehow find it way through the hoop but for TyneMet it seemed to find every area of the rim and back board but not go through the ring. Unfortunately the 3 point shooting from the Brighton team s guards proved too much for TyneMet to handle and they lost their second game of the day This was a disappointing result for the team as it looked highly unlikely they would be able to compete for a place in the semi-finals on day two, the first time in 3 years they wouldn t be in that bracket. It was tough to get the TyneMet team fired up for their last game of the day against a Bradford team. The game was never in question but coach Steutel didn t see the passion or execution of sets he wanted. Alan Slasor hit some big shots and Danny Horta Darrington controlled the game well at the point guard position to see the Men s team finish with a 2-2 record on the day beating Bradford The women s first game of the Day was against Birmingham Met College due to the men s team playing at the same time Chris Bunten took charge of the TyneMet ladies. The game started the way it would continue with Sophie Heslop winning the tip off, tapping it to point guard Becky Shields who released Kendal Barclay on a fast break to put the women from the north east up 2-0. Some great defensive efforts from Levi Williams helped spark the fast break game and mid-way through the game TyneMet held a comfortable 8-2 lead. Some great shooting from Abby Shields and ball movement from Lauren Short gave the ladies a comfortable win in their first game Game two for the women s team were perianal contenders Hackney College. With only 30 minutes rest between games the TyneMet 6 started very sluggishly against the Londoners and coach Bunten called an early time out to challenge his team to fight and share the ball well. With some great defence from Levi Williams who stripped the ball at half court and attacked the rim for 2 points it looked like the ladies were making a comeback with the score at 8-5. However TyneMet had no answers for Hackney s dominating centre who scored the remaining 8 points of the contest beating the North East team The final game of the day for the TyneMet women would be against Richard Huish College a do or die game the winner would advance to the semi-finals. Coach Bunten switched up his defence to focus on the south West s team best player playing a diamond and 1 trying to illuminate their scoring potential. Similar to the first game Kendal Barclay attacked the basket with purpose to put an early 2-0 advantage. Again showing off her athletic ability Levi Williams nullified the scoring from Richard Huish s best player hounding her where ever she went. Sharp shooting from the TyneMet Twines Abby and Becky Shields kept the score ticking over whilst Sophie Heslop secured every defensive rebound. It was a fantastic team performance which lead to a victory meaning that TyneMet women finished 2 nd in their pool and would take on 3 time defending champions Oaklands College. Day 2 for the men would have them playing form 5 th -8 th place. The first game would be against a talented Birmingham Mets team. The game was a very low scoring contest with neither team being able to pull away. Great defensive plays by under sized Zak Whelan would hold Birmingham s centre to 2 points. Mid-way through the game the score was 4-2 to TyneMet. Neither team could pull away poorly executed plays would see TyneMet hold a slim 10-8 lead with 5 seconds left. Birmingham had a shot to win but the 3 point attempt rimmed out advancing TyneMet to play for 5 th and 6 th place. The 5 th and 6 th place game would see Coach Steutel and Coach Shaw from Derby College go against each other again and for the first time TyneMet showed balanced scoring with every player getting on the court sharing the ball and knocking down shots. The final score of was a fair ending to a great team performance. The TyneMet women had a tough job to beat 3 time consecutive champions Oaklands who have 5 international players but they were up for the challenge. With 5 minutes left in the game TyneMet were only trailing by 3 points and head coach Michael Ball from Oaklands called a timeout to tear into his team. Coach Bunten urged his team to keep up the great work. Unfortunately the TyneMet 6 ran out of steam and the International players woke up and started hitting shots. The final score was 26-9 to Oaklands who again would win the overall tournament. So it came down to a third and fourth place playoff game against Hackney who we lost to 16-8 in the group stages. Coach Steutel came up with a strategy to stop Hackneys powerful centre and decided to use legendary coach Jimmy Valvano s triangle and two tactic with two players on one player. The girls executed the defensive game plan to perfection and mid-way through the game the score was 11-8 to the Londoners. Unfortunately the TyneMet ladies ran out of fire power and were not helped by some very questionable refereeing decisions. The ladies lost the game but improvements were made from the first game and with only 6 players Coach Bunten and Steutel were happy with the girls performances and how they had represented TyneMet and the North East finishing 4 th in the country. It was a very emotional team talk led by Coach Steutel as it was his final as Head Coach of the basketball Development centre. He thanked each and every one of the women and men s team individually for their efforts and commitment for the whole time he had been there. The Basketball academy, NESA and TyneMet College want to wish Marc Steutel all the best for the future and couldn t thank him enough for help putting TyneMet on the map as a power house in college basketball.

TyneMet defeat Gateshead TyneMet College first team hosted near neighbours and rivals Gateshead College first team in the ECFA League on a blustery day and it was TyneMet that came away from the game following a 2-1 win. Both teams were trying to come to terms with the conditions and get the ball down on the floor and play neat football in the opening period. It was the home side that were the first to test the goalkeeper kicking into the wind a Mikel Thompson curling shot on 10 minutes was well saved. 5 minutes later both teams had chances within a minute of each other a Michael Baxter shot was again well saved and with Gateshead going straight down the pitch had an effort that Callum Starker was equal too in the home goal. Gateshead were looking strong at this point in the game having lots of possession but an organised home defence well marshalled by Lewis Scorgie and Nelson Danquah restricted them to shots from distance. The visitors did take the lead as the half was coming to a close on 42 minutes when a good through ball saw Reece Noble fire low into the bottom corner. TyneMet made an almost instant response when a poor kick from the Gateshead keeper fell straight to Baxter who dribbled past the last defender and fired left footed low past the despairing dive of the Gateshead keeper. TyneMet took the lead with 57 minutes played when a good run by John Ackroyd saw him play in Baxter who again fired low left footed into the net. The home side had further chances to extend their lead with substitute Shane Jones, Antonio Manco and Baxter both having shots well saved by the Gateshead keeper. With Gateshead pressing they were presented with a glorious chance to equalise with just over 15 minutes remaining but their forward blazed the ball over. The closing stages were played out without any further real goalmouth action and it was TyneMet who extended their impressive recent form to three wins on the bounce. Final Score Tyne Met College 2-1 Gateshead College Dillon Blake scored 2 against Myerscough and Michael Baxter took the plaudits scoring 2 goals against Gateshead TyneMet win on the road TyneMet College travelled to Myerscough College in Preston and managed to come away with a fantastic 3-2 win. The game kicked off in glorious conditions on a fine afternoon and it was a tense affair in the opening period of the game with the home side having the majority of possession without creating any chances. Once TyneMet had got to grips with their opponents they had their first opportunity themselves as a through ball saw top scorer Shane Jones fire left footed and his effort was well saved by the home goalkeeper. The majority of the half followed a similar pattern with both defences on top. The deadlock was broken on 40 minutes when Jack Pinchen intercepted a sloppy pass out from the back and powered past the covering defender and slotted the ball home. TyneMet extended their lead to 2-0 when on 53 minutes a clever piece of skill by Dillon Blake inside the box saw him fouled by the home defender, Blake picked himself up and with a cool nerve and composure slotted the penalty kick into the back of the net. The home side s fightback was immediate and only 3 minutes later the managed to pull a goal back when after good play the ball was slammed home from close range. This perked up the home side and the visiting goal led a charmed life when a home forward hit the bar from close range but in the main the away defence was well marshalled by Captain Lewis Scorgie and Nelson Danquah. TyneMet were forced into hitting the home side on the break and this was highlighted when on 65 minutes substitute Michael Baxter superb cross field pass was well controlled by Blake who showed sublime control and drove the ball low and hard past the home keeper to extend the lead. As the game came to a close the home side did press looking to pull back goal and with only a few minutes remaining they managed to score after a deflected pass deceived the visiting defence and fell to the home player who coolly finished. After the restart the away defence stood strong as they saw out the last few minutes to give a well-deserved victory. Final Score Myerscough College 2 3 Tyne Met College

Sunshine and Attacking Rugby The sun was high in the sky when TyneMet College welcomed Macmillan to North Tyneside and the game that followed saw the hosts snatch a well-earned victory in a game which was superb for the spectators with 16 tries being scored between the two teams! Macmillan opened their account early on when the TyneMet defence seemed to still be waking up from the short bus ride to Rockcliff RFC where the game was hosted. The Macmillan 8, their standout player on the day, strolled through the defence and touched down under the posts. However TyneMet weren't to be out done and a superb kick chase from kick-off saw them pressure the Macmillan side into a mistake and Gareth Henderson took advantage of it to cross the whitewash with Cam Walker adding the extras. Whilst both teams could be very proud of their attacking flair it wasn t a day for defence coaches to look back on with any fondness and in the ensuing 30 minutes of rugby both teams seemed to be going for cricket totals. Lee Gallon and Dan Ward's strong running gave TyneMet some superb broken play which they attacked very well however they found themselves down by 15 at the halftime break. However in the second half, after some cajoling from Coach Jack Lambert, the defence finally seemed to click whilst the attack maintained momentum. Superb defensive turnover ball in their own 22 seemed to ignite the team and when this was followed by a Lee Gallon full length of the pitch try the team were galvanised and back in the game. Craig Laing and Kyle Higgins hit hard and low to stem the flow of Macmillan and Jordan Williams defended like a man possessed, bulldozing his opposite number. However Percy Park's superb young prospects Dan Wrigley and Harrison Brodie were instrumental in the change in performance and aerial supremo Wrigley turned over ball in the lineout all afternoon whilst Brodie hit ankles like a tenacious terrier before popping back up to contest the ball. With 3 minutes left on the clock TyneMet were 2 points behind but pressing on the Macmillan line and inside their 22. Wave after wave of attacks had been stopped and the fans seemed to start to think the side weren't going to take the win their second half performance deserved. When up stepped Cameron Walker who had moved in to the 9 position and had been dictating play for the blue side all game. After an audacious dummy which sent the defenders around the fringes lunging towards the 10 Cam launched himself over the line to give TyneMet what had seemed an unlikely win at half time. Coach Jack Lambert said, "Both teams came onto the pitch wanting to entertain and they have definitely managed that. Some of the attacking play from our players was superb and showed a lot of the work we have been doing all season around ball control and backing yourself in a 1v1 situation. The team have also shown a great resilience mentally to come back from 15 down at half time and as a group of players they have done that time and time again this season and should be very proud of that." Top Dan Ward the walking wounded broke his nose in action Middle - Dan Wrigley the aerial supremo Bottom - Gareth Henderson, Josh Stocks and Lee Gallon all scored a brace of tries

TyneMet Secure Strong Win TyneMet College played their first fixture after the holiday break and managed to defeat Bishop Burton College emphatically 8-1. The game kicked off in bright sunshine on a crisp spring afternoon and it was the TyneMet who should have taken the lead with the returning Phil Watson gifted a glorious chance however his finish was lacking. It didn t take him long to make amends as on 7 minutes a Jack Pinchen pass set Watson away and he showed good composure to slot the ball past the visiting keeper. This seemed to spur on the visitors who showed good spirit to try and get back into the game but they never threatened to breach the home defence. TyneMet made it 2-0 on 35 mins when full back Paul Dunn got his first goal of the season after a fine solo run past 3 defenders. The home side added a third goal to extend their lead with the goal of the game just before half time. Shane Jones seized on the loose ball and fully 30 yards from goal his shot found the top right hand corner of the goal. Bishop Burton did come out after the interval and take the game to the home side and got a reward for their hard work when a well worked corner saw them claw a goal back. TyneMet were in no mood to let this spoil their day as another Jones goal extended their advantage. Skipper Lewis Scorgie then made it five goals when he headed home a Jack Pinchen cross. With 20 minutes left on the clock Jones completed his hat-trick after a sublime cross from Kane White. Further goals followed when substitute Juste Akani was set left to finish with his first touch of the game after a defence splitting pass by Mikel Thompson. The 85 th minute of the game saw the visitors misery compounded when a Pinchen deflected shot ended up in the back of the net to see TyneMet jubilant and the visitors left with a long trip back home. Shane Jones Hat-trick Hero Final Score Tyne Met College 8 1 Bishop Burton TyneMet Trojans Netball Team Take a win in Debut Performance TyneMet College s Netball team has recently been formed having regular sessions on a Tuesday pm at the Coast Road Campus. On Wednesday 2 nd April the girls had their first game against Churchill Community College. The girls were nervous on the way over to the opposition s school but were soon on the court and playing their first game. With Nadia Mason at GK, Sam Cave GD, Kendal Barclay WD, Becky Shields C, Abby Shields WA, Hannah Baxter GA and Natalie Peters GS, the girls had a strong start to the game winning the first quarter 7 0. The second quarter the girls switched their positions but with some great performances across the board they finished the half out winning The second half was more of the same, with all the girls moving around positions to see which area they feel most comfortable and excel at. The final score was TyneMet 22 Churchill 3. Coach Sarah Bennett said It was a great overall performance from all of the girls. Most of them have not played since leaving high school nearly 2 years ago and some never before. It was a fantastic effort and we are looking to find more fixtures for them before the end of the year. If anyone else is interested in taking part in Netball come along to the sessions on a Tuesday 12.15pm 1pm at Coast Road Sports Hall. All abilities welcome.

TyneMet Take 2 nd at 7 s TyneMet took a trip to Druid Park to enter a sevens tournament. The team had worked hard through the week on defensive shape and sevens rugby and would see those hours of work rewarded with a second place finish. TyneMet played some superb defensive rugby and kept great shape in open play and made their 1v1 tackles and this was most evident in their win over Hexham High School where a phase of 12 rucks eventually turned into turn over ball and meant Keiran Lydall, man of the tournament on his injury return, raced under the posts. This typified TyneMet s play on the day with strong defence giving the men in blue the chance to attack. TyneMet were led by Gareth Henderson and Lee Gallon who both performed well alongside Steffan Varty who once again showed his class and determination on the rugby pitch. Kyle Higgins also showed worrying speed for a front row and Declan Williamson and Jethro Pearson played direct but very well. Only a loss to Duchess stopped TyneMet from taking the plaudits on the day. TyneMet Players Volunteer for Northumberland RFU TyneMet students had a day at Tynedale RFC volunteering for the Northumberland RFU as touch judges and score keepers this month. The players continued building skills which will help them stand out as university students or potential employees and were superb on the day once again helping to make rugby happen in the North East. Coach Jack Lambert said, Today we have beaten Rugby Schools like Hexham High and had the opportunity to beat Duchess which we just didn t quite take. For a first sevens tournament the players have shown what they can do and I look forward to seeing them play the shortened version of the game more in the summer months.
