The squad is has picked up points in even of the last nine matches in the Lehigh Valley, with the only set backs coming against Louisville in 2017 and against Nashville when the club was down 10-men. IRON TRIALIST Defender Matt Mahoney has made the most of his opportunities since joining Bethlehem Steel FC in January After earning his first professional contract after a preseason trial, Mahoney has played every minute of A versatile defender, the 23-year-old has started at his natural position of right back as well as center back. BUSY MAY AWAITS The month of May will showcase Steel FC s ability to work under pressure following the club s contest this weekend. Next weekend the squad will begin a three-game in seven day span that will see Steel FC travel to Charleston on Saturday, return home for a contest against rival New Yor Red Bulls II before a trip to Indy Eleven on the 19th. Steel FC has picked up two draws this month, tying Charleston and FC Cincinnati with matching 1-1 scorelines. Cory Burke has netted both goals in April but the club is looking to reignite its offense that produced four tallies in the season opener. PREVIOUS MEETING Steel FC and Louisville City FC matched up last year in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals with Steel FC falling 4-0 in the club s inaugural USL Cup Playoff contest. Set pieces proved the difference in the contest, as the hosts struck for the opening goal in the 14th minute and never looked back. COACH S CORNER Bethlehem Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke: On the Louisville match Going back to the Louisville game, just disappointed with our urgency and defending especially in and around our box. From restarts to throw-ins, we didn t get pressure on the ball and it leads to some lapsed defending at the top of our box. I would say that all three goals, we could have done much better to prevent such easy opportunities in a game where we played well. We had a 15 minute spell where we were just sound asleep and there is no other way to put it. We have not had that all season so I was really disappointed with that and hopefully it s a one off and it will certainly be a focus leading into the Richmond game for us this weekend. On trying to get a win at home against Richmond again We ve only lost once at home but we haven t been converting and making it three points. I look back at Charleston and Cincinnati, those have to be wins if we want to be relevant in the playoff conversation so that is all we re talking about this week. You have to get something out of these home games and draws don t pile up enough to help you come the business end of the season so there is a real focus on us being intent on winning this game this week, no matter how it comes. On building off the previous win against Richmond You have to take confidence in the way that you approached the game last time but we ve really erased that game from our memory in terms of the it was approached tactically and from a personnel standpoint. They have guys like Dane Kelly coming back into the team, who is the all-time leading goal scorer in USL, so this is a far more dangerous team than what we say the first time around and that isn t lost on us.

Steel FC saw Philadelphia Union midfielders Derrick Jones and Eric Ayuk score first-half goals while forward Brandon Allen tallied a second-half brace in his Steel FC debut. Steel FC came out establishing their high press early in the contest, pinning the Kickers inside their defensive third for the match s 20 minutes. The high-intensity paid off in the 24th minute, as Marcus Epps forced a Richmond turnover. After a pattern of passes throughout the midfield, right back Matthew Mahoney sent into the box a cross that was tipped by Kickers goalkeeper Travis Worra but directly to Ayuk who tapped it home for Steel FC s first goal of Sixteen minutes later, Steel FC doubled its lead on a thrilling run by the club s first ever signing from Collecting a pass from Epps in the midfield, Jones beat four Richmond defenders throughout a 35-yard run before inside the far post. Richmond battled back into the contest early in the second half, finding their lone goal in the 57th minute as Oscar Umar collected a pass from captain Brian Shriver and fired home from far outside the box.steel FC kept its composure and turned to the club s offseason signing of Allen to round out the match in the final 30 minutes of play. After a strong run by Jones into the Kickers box was saved by Worra coming off his line, Allen collected the loose ball. Finding himself at the edge of the 18-yard box, the 24-year-old took three steps to his left before firing a shot through the defense and inside the left post for his debut goal. Allen, one of the USL s most prolific goalscorers, wasn t done yet. With time winding down, rookie midfielder Mike Catalano played a through ball toward Allen. With a quick touch around the keeper to get to the end line, Allen threaded the ball from the tight angle for the brace.

8 2018 BETHELEHEM STEEL FC TECHNICAL STAFF Head coach Brendan Burke Burke is in his third season as head coach of Bethlehem Steel FC, coaching the squad to an regular season record during the club s first two seasons in the modern era. He was formally introduced as the club s first head coach on Oct. 29, 2015 and recently signed an extension to remain with Steel FC for the foreseeable future. During his two seasons with Bethlehem Steel FC, he has navigated 65 different starting XI combinations in 67 career matches while guiding three players to first team contracts with Derrick Jones in 2016 and the duo of Cory Burke and Matt Real after the 2017 season. Overall, Burke had coached 64 players including 25 players with ties to the first team and 12 from the Philadelphia Union Academy the past two seasons. Prior to joining Steel FC, Burke served as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Union from 2011 through He was heavily involved in all levels of the U.S. Soccer pyramid, including serving as head coach of the Union s PDL affiliate Reading United from where he had a record of During his time with Reading, Burke coached 49 players that signed professional contracts including Ray Gaddis, C.J. Sapong, John McCarthy and Matt Hedges. Burke served as associate head coach at Northeastern University in Assistant coach Stephen Hogan Hogan, who formerly served as the head coach of the Philadelphia Union s PDL affiliate, Reading United, is in his third season with Steel FC. Hogan guided the PDL squad to a record in his two seasons with Reading United. The club went and won the Mid-Atlantic Division title along with an appearance in the Eastern Conference finals. Hogan followed up with an even stronger record in 2017, tying for the most wins in the 72-team league. During the season that saw the club reach the postseason for the ninth time in 10 seasons, Hogan s squad conceded an Eastern Conference-low 10 goals. As a Reading player under Brendan Burke, he made 52 appearances, second most in club history, while playing from He helped lead the team to the 2009 PDL Regular Season Title and the PDL National Semifinals in 2008 and A native of Dublin, Ireland, Hogan spent two seasons as head coach at the College of Saint Rose s men s soccer program.
