In the afternoon, the rest of the staff joined the teachers to hear Officer Andy Lehocky from the Albuquerque Police Department speak about school safety. Andy is one of the school resource officers that is assigned to private schools in ABQ. I had heard him speak in October, and approached him to see if he would come to our campus. We all know that violence and trauma can quickly invade our lives. My own church was broken into a few weeks ago and just about everything of technological value was stolen. It is hard to believe that there are people who would seek to steal from the house of God. UPCOMING EVENTS Mon., Jan. 28 School Board Meeting Deadline to pre-order you YEARBOOK IN s & OUT s It is also hard to imagine why someone would come to harm children at a school. We pray protection over the children and buildings of Rehoboth every day and we trust that God will watch over and care for us. We also are intentional about doing things that can improve safety on campus. If you notice some changes, please realize that we are changing things in order to make things safer. Office Andy told us the hardest hurdle to get over is that safety often causes inconveniences. He encouraged us to live with the inconveniences because safety is more important. Safety Does Not Equal Convenience This past Monday, the teachers and staff of Rehoboth Christian School participated in inservice trainings. In the morning, the teaching staff were greatly blessed by a workshop on helping children who have been affected by trauma. Traci Tippett, a social worker from Albuquerque gave the staff training on four tools to use to help children who are facing challenges in the classroom due to traumatic events in their lives. Many staff have told me it was one of our best seminars ever. We thank the FIESTA program and Upcoming changes at RCS: More locked doors you will notice that at certain times of day, you make be locked out of a building. Please be patient as someone comes to answer the door. We will also have internal classroom doors locked while school is in session. Identification Tags staff and volunteers will be wearing lanyard ID tags, and visitors will be required to check in at the office to receive a visitor s tag.

2 DOGS we are going to start a program that several ABQ schools have implemented called DOGS Dads On Guard. We ask for dads to volunteer to patrol inside and outside during school events like basketball games, concerts, etc. If you are interested volunteering, please contact Carol Bremer-Bennett or Lorretta Smith. If you are ready, we can start at tonight s middle school basketball game! Being a YELLOW School we are always going to be on yellow alert. We are going to question visitors about their presence on campus, report people sitting in parked cars, etc. The staff has already started to do this and parents as well. We are so thankful that a few parents have started calling the office if they see a stranger or unknown car on campus. We immediately respond and approach these people/cars. Put the office phone numbers (Elementary/Mid School , High School , and Administration ) in your favorites list. If you see a dangerous person or threat, call 911. Please help us be at a heightened awareness it is the best way for us to keep RCS safe. Carol Bremer-Bennett, Superintendent ELEMENTARY EVENTS Bundle up With the very cold weather upon us, please make sure your children are leaving home dressed warm enough for the weather. Please also make sure your child s name is written inside clothing items so we can identify them if lost. We end up with mountains of lost and found items which never get found. Thank you for your help! Rehoboth Open House We would love more students and families to come and be part of the Rehoboth experience next year. There will be an Open House on Saturday, March 2 for new families to come and learn more about Rehoboth. Please spread the word and encourage friends and neighbors to come and check us out! Upcoming dates: Mon., Feb. 18 NO SCHOOL Presidents Day Blessings, Jim Holwerda, Principal MIDDLE SCHOOL MATTERS Spelling Bee Our own Austin Wilson competed in the McKinley County Spelling Bee and took third place. Congratulations Austin! Geography Bee The annual middle school geography bee took place last week Thursday. Ten students competed, pitting their geography knowledge against the each other. They were asked everything from the Alaskan Aleutian Islands to the Tampa Bay and everything in between. It was a thrilling match that ended with Gabe Aparicio edging out Johnny Cain for the victory. Congratulations Gabe! MS Basketball The season is winding down. Thank you for coming out and supporting our MS basketball teams and cheering them on. We ask that all fans continue to cheer and support our athletes in positive ways as we represent Rehoboth Christian School at each game. As Rehoboth fans, we always cheer FOR our own team, and never against our team, the other team or the referees. Thank you for your help in teaching our kids the right way to be a fan!! 3 HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS Valedictorian and Salutatorian It is our policy and tradition to determine the senior class valedictorian and salutatorian after the first semester of a class s senior year. We have calculated GPAs at the semester and this year s valedictorian and salutatorian are Paul Ratmeyer and Caleb Bia. Great work, gentlemen! National Honor Society 19 students from Rehoboth Christian High School were inducted into membership of the National Honor Society in an afternoon ceremony at the high school on Tuesday. Members were selected for meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students inducted were: Nelson Bates, Tyler Begay, Caleb Bia, Ashley Carlisle, Michelle Mackel, Jack Martin, George Olson, Marius Olson, Paul Ratmeyer, Kyree Sky, Leah Thomas, Nathalia Alvarez, Kaila Calabrese, Jonathan Heinz, Liberty Kinsel, Elizabeth Lynch, Robin Reinhard, Kyon Tom, Matthew Yatsetye, and Kristin Yazzie. The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students. Chapters exist in three-fourths of the nation s high schools and, since 1921, millions of students have been selected for membership. Congratulations to these Rehoboth students for this achievement. Netclassroom and the second semester Throughout the second semester I encourage you to take advantage and log into Netclassroom to keep up with your student s grades in their courses. As we start the second semester, your student s grades can be found under Quarter 4 throughout the semester. This is where assignments will be added and grades will be updated through the semester. To make this appear on the home screen when you log in, click on My Settings and select Quarter 4 from the pulldown menu titled Show averages using: Be sure to click on Save. Doing this will ensure that the correct, most up to date grades appear on the home screen when you log in. Seniors Here are just a few reminders and updates pertaining to seniors and their parents. Also, be sure to check out for up to date information pertaining to seniors. Senior Parent Meeting Please plan to attend the 2 nd senior parent meeting on Wednesday, January 30 at 6:30PM in Room 3 of the High School. This meeting will give you some updates from our meeting last September as well as allow us to help you with your student s FAFSA registration. If you have not turned in a senior picture to the yearbook please do so as soon as possible! We are still missing pictures from 15 seniors. Senior Presentations will take place on April 22 and 23. The senior class has now selected their class song. It is Home by Phillip Phillips Yearbook Pre-ordering! The deadline for Pre-ordering your yearbook is approaching. Pre-order yours now for only $38 by clicking on the link found on the RCS website. ( )Once pre-ordering is closed only minimal quantities of extra yearbooks will be ordered. Pre-ordering is the only way to guarantee you will be able to purchase a yearbook and you can do so until January 28. Did you know? Did you know that 40% of Rehoboth Christian High Schools students earned all As and/or Bs for their first semester classes? HS Events Wed., Feb. 6 Mid-Quarter Progress Reports Feb. 4-9 Homecoming Week Chris VanSlooten High School Principal LIBRARY CORNER Fourth and fifth graders are continuing to visit the library frequently and reaching their goals. Last Friday, anyone that had reached their 25% reading goal was given a ticket for a drawing. There were 12 winners. Students won pencil holder bags, books, bookmarks, a RCS license plate, and a T-shirt. Everyone was very excited and happy for the winners. Continue reading and stay excited.

4 The sixth grade classes studied the Aztec and Mayan cultures. The students created projects related to their studies. The projects are displayed in the library. If you have a chance, please come by and view these creative creations. As always, continue to encourage your children to read and learn. You know you ve read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend ~ Paul Sweeney Angela Barker Elementary/Middle School Librarian that will positively impact their remaining years in high school and also direct them to post-secondary educational opportunities. This action packed two day conference will run from 5:00 PM on Friday, March 22 and ends at 4:30 PM on Saturday, March23. This is an overnight conference at Broken Arrow Bible Ranch the cost is $25 per student. This includes all meals and all activities. To sign-up please contact Berniz Constanza at bconst79@calvin.edu or (616) HS COLLEGE CORNER Buick Achievers Scholarship Program GM foundation gives 100 scholarships each year worth $25,000 for four years and 1000 scholarships worth $2000 a year. They are looking for good students planning to enroll in a four-year college who are interested in engineering, technology, design or business, with an interest toward the automotive industry. They also want to support those who give back to their communities and need financial assistance. The application deadline is February 28 and you can find the application and more information at College Academic Enrichment Programs Every college and university has summer academic enrichment programs and we encourage every student to become involved. You can pick your school and look up what they have for summer programs. Calvin College has a summer academy which is four weeks long and includes college credit. If you attend Calvin, it includes a $2000 a year scholarship. You can find more information at Calvin College invites you to Step West- a two day conference at Broken Arrow Bible Camp hosted by Calvin College staff and students. This conference is for students in grades This conference is designed to introduce students to college life, give first-hand experience with college instructors and instruction, acquaint students with career opportunities, help students discern the necessary steps for college entry, and help students grow spiritually. Youth will be provided with an experience The high school will have a representative from Indian Health Services on February 14 at 1pm to assist students with the IHS scholarship. Parents are welcome to attend. The scholarship is for Native students pursuing a career and degree in the medical field. The high school will also have a representative from the Navajo tribe on February 28 at 1pm to assist students who will be applying to the tribe for their regular scholarship program, as well as the Chief Manuelito Scholarship. Again, parents are welcome to attend. All Rehoboth Navajo students planning to attend college next year will be at this meeting and get the information and application. Northern New Mexico Senior Men s Golf Association (NNMMGA) invites High School seniors to apply for one of their scholarships offered to graduating seniors in Northern NM. This year they will award two one-time scholarships of $2000 and eight one-time scholarships of $1000. Eligibility requirements include a GPA of 3.4 or above, residence in Northern NM or Southern CO and acceptance to an accredited four-year college. For more information and the application process, visit the HS counseling office. The deadline for applications is April 15 (and you do not have to golf in order to apply). ATHLETICS Food for the concession stand is needed- We are asking each parent of winter athletes to donate item(s) to the concession stand. We also welcome donations from non-athlete families. The Concession is in need of the following items:

5 Gatorade (assorted flavors 20 oz.), Chocolate Candy bars (any kind), Chips (assorted 1 oz.), Hot Dogs, Buns, Airheads, and Ring Pops. 6 COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS The Hunts Family of Nine Musicians and Dancers will be performing in the Gallup High School s Kenneth Holloway Auditorium on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, beginning at 7PM. The parents, Sandy and Clint, met while in college, married, and started having children. Each of the seven children was taught the violin by Sandy once they reached 6 years of age. Clint taught them guitar when they were a little older. There will be champion fiddling mixed with dancing, drums, and more. The family performs a wide range of musical genres ranging from Celtic to Country to Rock. Come and enjoy the show.
