3 SPECIAL NOTICE!! Tuesday, May 29 th, the carnival equipment for Old Shawnee Days will be in our parking lot, eliminating most, if not all, of the parking spaces available to us. The Baptist church to our east has given us permission to park in their lot for that evening. They ask that we park near the little footbridge. We thank them for being a good neighbor! Also, due to the National Convention, the following dances have been cancelled: June 24 - KC Plus June 30 - Pistols N Petticoats Letter from the President... Spring is finally coming as we can tell by our Swingin Singles Snowbirds returning to nest in the Kansas City Area. Speaking of birds, our first dance, May 1, will be the National Mother Goose Day Dance. The first five to recite a Mother Goose rhyme, when asked, will receive a gift. May 15 will be our National Chocolate Chip Day Dance. I can t think of a better way to celebrate than chocolate. Bring your favorite chocolate chip goodies to share as we celebrate the Swingin Singles 52 nd Anniversary. May 29 is our Memorial Day Dance. We ll pause to remember those brave souls who died defending our country and to whom we owe so much. Welcome to our new members, Renee Wycoff, Robert Ferguson, Harold McElhinney, and Tom Miller! Thanks for your support of our Visitation Program. The numbers attending have been great. The larger numbers also benefit smaller clubs, helping them meet their financial responsibilities. Bill Foreman May 2018 Newsletter 3
4 KITCHEN KLATTER The saying Many hands make light work is proving true in the kitchen at our dances. Some come early and pitch in without being asked. Some show up and get things going before those who have volunteered arrive, then stick around to make certain things run smoothly. Dora Newsom, she of the great smile and winsome ways, has helpers signed up through June. She ll be making the rounds again very soon. Go ahead, make her day! LESSONS UPDATE All lessons are finished, and students are all out and about dancing at visitation dances and our club dances. It s great to see so many of them squaring up together. Lessons start up again September 10 th. Swingin Singles members, ask friends, relatives, or anybody else you can think of to come and learn Modern Square Dancing. The first 3 lessons are FREE. We need new members to keep our club growing, and this is one way to get them started. Judy s Apple Raisin Bread Pudding (With Vanilla) And Custard Sauce - *see modification below 3 T. butter melted 7 eggs 1 (1lb.) loaf cinnamon-raisin bread, cubed (Pepperidge Farm) 2 1/2 c. half-and-half 3 c. chopped tart apples 3/4 c. sugar 3 tsp. vanilla extract Pour butter into a 13 x 9 dish. Combine bread cubes and apples and sprinkle over butter. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, half-and-half, sugar, and vanilla. Pour over bread. Cover and store in refrigerator overnight. Bake uncovered at 325 degrees for 45 minutes or until knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Pour Vanilla Custard Sauce over top and serve. Yield: 12 servings. Vanilla Custard Sauce 1 c. sugar 1 c. water 1 1/2 T. cornstarch 2 egg yolks, beaten slightly 1 stick butter 2 tsp. vanilla extract Mix sugar, cornstarch, butter, and water. Heat until sugar is dissolved and bring to slight boil, stirring constantly. Blend a small amount of sugar mixture into the slightly beaten egg yolks and return to pan and bring to boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Store covered in refrigerator until ready to use. After baking bread pudding, spread custard sauce over it. *Ok, instead of putting the cinnamon bread in the recipe, I added donuts. I don't know how many, but I think it was more than 2 dozen. I did cut them up or slice them. Then I added 1 cup of raisins and probably 2 teaspoons of cinnamon to the recipe. I did have to bake it a few minutes longer -- just until a knife inserted in the center came out clean. I did put the mixture in the refrigerator overnight and baked it the next day as the recipe said to do. May 2018 Newsletter 5
