1 JULY 2015 Oakfield Academy, Oakfield Road, Frome BA11 4JF Tel: Fax: If you would like further information on any of the items in the newsletter, please contact the school office. A large font version of the newsletter is available from Reception. WHAT A FANTASTIC YEAR END! - A message from Miss Emma Wilkes, Head Teacher A brilliant achievement by our Year 6 pupils in this year s SATS. 79% of pupils were able to achieve Level 4 or higher in all of Reading, Writing and Mathematics we are extremely pleased with their success! This year I have been thoroughly impressed with the efforts from pupils and staff, who have worked amazingly, giving their time generously to support events at the Academy. Recently we have been absorbed with our breath-taking summer production of Annie Jnr. With 11 performances, to fellow pupils and staff, invited local schools and 3 paying evening audiences (sold out!) the school has been captivated by the acting, singing and costumes of the entire cast. The production would not have happened without the marvellous support of the back-stage crew. Congratulations to Mrs Nicholson and Ms Parsons for what must be one of Oakfield s best ever shows, and well done and thank you to all the staff and parents that helped support this huge event. As we say goodbye and wish luck to our current Year 8 pupils, we hope that their experiences at this year s very successful Charterhouse Camp will remain a wonderful memory of their time at Oakfield. Good luck to you all, and have a super Year 8 Presentation Evening and day at Thorpe Park. At this time we also say goodbye to some of our staff who are leaving to retire, or move on to pastures new. Amongst them are Mrs Coleman, who joined the PE Department in 1994 and is retiring; Mr Griffiths who joined the Science Department in 2001 and is also retiring; Mr Low who has worked with the Year 6 team since 2006 and takes up a new position at another school in September. We also say a sad farewell to Mr Gerrish, our Premises Manager since 2004 who has helped to keep the school running smoothly. Farewell also to Mr Farrell from the Year 5 team and Ms Webber, one of our Teaching Assistants. Best wishes and good luck to all of you for the future, and thank you sincerely for your great work over the years. There are a number of exciting changes to the way the school runs starting next term and I look forward to announcing them in our September Welcome edition. Well that only remains for me to wish you all a wonderful, relaxing summer break. Thank you Oakfield pupils for all your hard work this year, you are an inspiration! As parents, you might wish to visit the following website which gives you the chance to provide your opinion about your child s experiences at Oakfield Academy. Please take time to visit and fill in the short questionnaire about our Academy. Pupils will return for the Autumn Term on Wednesday 2 nd September, 8.30am when we will look forward to enjoying another rewarding and successful academic year. After winning the South West Regional Final, Thomas Leigh and I qualified to go to the National Final in Cambridge on 3rd July. We were quite nervous, as we had to stand up in front of a big room of people, so I was relieved when it was over! Unfortunately, neither of us managed to get into the top 4, but is was an unforgettable experience which made me feel much more confident in languages. ISABEL HANNEY 7A UKMT Junior Maths Challenge 2015 Thirty of our top mathematicians from Years 7&8 took part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. This was a national competition and involved problem solving in a range of mathematical situations. The top 40% of entrants nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate. 3 Oakfield Academy Fundraisers need some more people to join the main committee group. This group meets every 6-8 weeks to discuss how to raise money for the Academy and to discuss forthcoming events. We have an Annual General Meeting booked for 8th September 2015 at 6pm please feel free to come along and hear all about us and the events we are running. We look forward to seeing you. Fair Frome Pop Up Shop will be in The Westway Precinct for 2 weeks (13 th 28 th July) to raise money for Fair Frome. Fair Frome run the food bank for the BA11 area, and among other things organise community dining events. They support local people to be more resilient in the current economic climate. They are collecting for the pop up shop, and in particular hope to be able to sell school uniforms, children s clothes, trainers, football boots, shoes, books and toys. reasons. All donations direct to the shop. COMMUNITY QUILT PROJECT EXHIBITION The art work of our Year 8 pupils can be seen at the Black Swan arts centre until the end of August in The-Home-in-Frome-Memory-Quilt- exhibition. HANDBALL HEROES. Congratulations to Max Pollock and Ben Underhill in Year 8 who were put forward for the Somerset Handball trials. Both have now been selected for the squad and will go on to represent Somerset at Handball for the foreseeable future. This is a particular achievement for the boys, and the PE Department, as we have only played handball here for 2 years. Well done lads, MR FOWLER, HEAD OF PE LOST PROPERTY can be claimed from the school stage during the first 3 days of the summer holidays (20-22 July) from 10am 2pm. After that unclaimed items will be disposed of. THANK YOU. The school office will be open from 9am 2pm on Monday 20th, Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd July to buy school uniform. We will also be open on Tuesday 1st September 9am-2pm for purchasing uniform, prior to the children returning on Wednesday 2nd September.
4 Year 8s rock at Charterhouse I think Charterhouse is a great experience which helps boost confidence, whilst having a great time. Caving was my favourite activity, but I also really like climbing as it was challenging. BARNEY NUTTALL Oakfield s very own MR. G!
5 The climbing and abseiling were amazing it was so great to do things you wouldn t normally do. AMY COTTERELL Charterhouse was amazing, I really enjoyed the wet caving and the climbing, they really were an exciting challenge. The food was fantastic. The staff were really nice and I would love to go again. JAYDEN WHEELER Charterhouse I loved it! Especially the caving, because it felt amazing to be that deep underground. All in all a fun but very tiring few days, with awesome instructors, that were always around to help you. Thoroughly recommended. IVO WADE

8 After months of blood, sweat and tears (and that s just the dogs!), our hugely anticipated summer performance of ANNIE JNR hit the stage. 2 casts, 3 Annies, 3 dogs and a total of 11 performances wowed audiences. The cast performed for the rest of Oakfield pupils, local First Schools and packed houses of paying customers for 3 evening shows each show completely sold out! Well done to the entire cast, support crew, staff and parents who helped. The show was legendary and will be remembered as one of the best Oakfield have ever produced. Thank you to everybody who supported it watch out for next year s plans in the Performing Arts Department! was raised at our recent MUFTI Day well done!
