1 15th June, 2017 Week 8, Term 2 The Humbug Principal (Rel.): Mrs Terrie Payne RESPECT RESPONSIBILITY LEARNING Condobolin Rd, Ungarie NSW 2669 Ph: (02) Fax: (02) ungarie-c.school@det.nsw.edu.au Web: From the Principal s desk Welcome back after a well-earned long weekend! Yesterday, a number of students in both primary and secondary competed at the Western Area Cross Country in Geurie. We were excited to receive the news that both Jack Crofts and Molly Bryant have qualified for the NSW Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek next month. Jack finished an amazing 2 nd and Molly finished 6 th. Congratulations to both Jack and Molly! On Tuesday we held our PBL Fast and Free Level 2 Reward. It was wonderful to see students dressed in PBL colours. All students enjoyed their free BBQ lunch. We are now working towards Level 3, which is a movie afternoon at school. Our Semester One Reward Day to Griffith is fast approaching. Please return notes to the front office by Monday 19 th June. Ungarie Central School has been in a successful partnership with the UNSW Aspire program for the past 10 years. Each year our students across K-12 are involved in some way with Aspire, from school visits to excursions to Sydney or Dubbo. Earlier this term, Year 11 attended the Focus on Success Conference in Dubbo. Motivation, goal setting, reaching their potential in the HSC, choosing the right degree and university and how to get there were the aims of the conference. In Week 10 this term, four Year 10 students will be in Sydney for the week as part of Aspire s Year 10 Connect Program. The students have chosen career pathways they are interested in and a customised schedule will be developed for each student. Three Year 9 students will also be in Sydney in Week 10 as part of the Aerospace STEM pilot program, in partnership with Cuberider. Students will learn about the Earth s gravitational pull and design, build and test a landing structure. All Year 9 students will also be involved in an online mentoring program with Aspire, beginning in Term 3. Students will travel to Sydney next term with Mr Cattle to meet their mentors. Exciting times ahead! Until next week, Terrie Payne

4 P&C We are nearing the halfway mark for the year and thought it would be a good idea to let everyone know what the UCS P&C committee and members have been up to. This term we held the Mother s Day Stall with lots of thoughtful gifts for the students to buy for the wonderful mums of our community, this was almost a complete sell out, raising $125 towards the USC P&C. We also supplied canteen for the Lower Lachlan Cross Country which was another successful day again raising over $600 towards the UCS P&C. So far this year we have received several letters from the students and teachers asking for some financial assistance and we were very pleased to be able provide some support in the following ways: The UCS P&C paid $450 towards the students attending the Recorder Excursion to Sydney. $600 was contributed to support the of home readers $250 was contributed to the purchase of the PBL bands Another big THANKYOU to everyone who got involved and/or helped out at all our fund raising events. It s great to see the parents and community being able to support Ungarie Central School and all its students. We have the Father s Day Stall coming up in term 3 which we have already begun to prepare for, and are ready for any other opportunities that may present. Our next meeting is on the 21 st 2pm in the school Library. It would be so great to see everyone there!
5 HABIT OF MIND AND SPORT AWARD RECIPIENTS FOR WEEK The basketball players who had received Habit of Mind awards this week had to leave quickly to make their game. We took a photo of them later! KROP judges Monica St Baker and Neil Mahaffey were impressed by the Instrumental Ensemble s performance (with Mrs Mason) and confirmed the success of the audition by on Friday. Congratulations to the students (Angus Williams, Tilly Langham, Michelene Izzard, Madi Cassidy, Kadee Gerhard- Scali, Hugh Williams and Seth McCubbin, pictured with the judges) on a great result, and for all the work they have put in during lunch time and after school. Mrs Mason
7 PSSA BASKETBALL On Friday 2 nd June our Primary girls and boys basketball teams travelled to West Wyalong to compete in the PSSA basketball knockout. The boys were on court first, up against Lake Cargelligo. From the outset, the boys looked very strong and free-flowing with their attacking raids up the court. Ashton, Harry and Noah were carving Lake Cargelligo up, who had no answers to stem the flow of baskets. Ungarie ran out easy winners of that game. Our girls team came up against the powerful West Wyalong girls first, who have three representatives in the Western team. As hard as our girls tried, they were no match for the well-drilled WWPS combination. To their credit, Sammy, Hayley, Regan, Ella and the younger girls never gave up for the entire game. The boys then had to play the equally impressive West Wyalong boys team. We started very well in this game, and were actually leading for most of the first quarter. West Wyalong eventually started to overpower us, through good use of their bench and keeping fresh players on the court. Hugh was feeling unwell after our first game, so we only had one on our bench! West Wyalong came away with a strong win. The girls team then had to play the Toppy girls. In this game our girls had a bit more time and freedom around the court, which showed on the scoreboard. All our girls dropped a few baskets throughout the game, which put a smile on their faces. Ungarie won this game comfortably. Well done to all who played on the day!
