1 20 th October, 2016 Week 2, Term 4 The Humbug Principal (Rel.): Mrs Terrie Payne RESPECT RESPONSIBILITY LEARNING With Mrs Payne out and about with students from Yr 5/6 in Canberra I get the honour of writing the front page of The Humbug this week. Once again UCS never ceases to amaze with the exciting and innovative activities our students get to experience. It may be week two of the last term of the year but rather than slowing down, things seem to be ramping up. Students in Yr 5/6 get to have an incredible week visiting and experiencing the ever evolving sights and sounds that our Nation s Capital has to offer. I will let Mrs Payne talk more about her experience in next week s Humbug but in the meantime please check out our Facebook page for more information and daily picture updates. Congratulations to Sammy Rutledge for making it to the State PSSA Athletics carnival in Sydney for Long Jump and High Jump. We hope you had fun competing! This weekend is UCS 125 Year Celebration. Come one, come all to this amazing day! It looks to be an action packed day filled with market stalls, games, memorabilia, a time capsule to be opened and a new one closed, BBQ lunch and other food stalls, a fashion parade of UCS uniforms throughout the ages, performances from past and present students and a range of fun activities for all. So come and celebrate with us and I look forward to seeing you all there. Rewards Day last week was so much fun. Students chose to participate in Woodwork with Sonya Ward, Metalwork with Jason Lewis, Cooking with Alison Wason, Cake Decorating with Ros Bennett, Art with Mareea James, Ag Show Teams with Rachel Jackson and K/1/2 doing a mixture of activities, including cooking, games and experiments with Emma Stokes, Kristy McClintock & Philip Cattle. A big thank you to everyone involved. It was a great day and all students produced excellent work. Thanks Ella Payne for my cupcake it looked almost too good to eat almost. Just a reminder that if you haven t already, can you please pay $10 to the front office as soon as possible for each child of yours that participated in rewards day. In 2017 we hope to have an Ag Cattle Show Team setup. Students along with Mrs Jackson will take our beloved Dexter s, Bess and Cassia along to local shows. Students will have to prep, parade and judge cattle. There has been a lot of background prep work happening this year and we have an eager team of students keen to undertake the challenge next year. In the coming weeks they will be sending out a letter to businesses and farms in the area. Can you please take the time to read it and support in any way possible. Until next time! Mr Dodhy

Year 5/6 Tree Planting Congratulations to Year 5/6 and Mrs James for planting trees in the grass area near the Ungarie Water Tower. Thank you to Mrs Wilson for organising the day and a special thank you also to Glenn and Craig from the Bland Shire Council for supplying the trees and providing a sausage sizzle lunch. All the students enjoyed participating in such a worthwhile activity and are looking forward to caring for the trees and watching them grow. Great job! State PSSA Athletics The staff and students of UCS would like to wish Sammy Rutledge all the very best as she heads to Sydney this week to compete. GO SAMMY! K/1 Jelly Cups K/1 would like to thank everyone who donated packets of jelly for the jelly cup stall. K/1 have made 150 tasty jelly cups to sell. 125Yr Celebrations This Saturday, UCS celebrates 125yrs of education. There will be market stalls, BBQ and games organised for the day. The students show entries and prizes will also be on display. Come and join in our celebrations!

6 Ungarie Bowling Club Jackpot Draw Friday Night stands at $550 Last Sunday, in good weather conditions (at last), the final of the Club Triples were held, with Tony Carr s team taking on Ben Wallace s team. In a well fought- out game, the eventual winners of the final was Ben s team. Congratulations to John Truscott, Jayden Erwin and Ben Wallace on being the Triples champions. Commiserations to Daniel Potter, Richard Hall & Tony Carr on being runners-up. Well played gents! This Sunday is the Men s Triples tournament commencing at 9.30am. Asking for more teams. Good prize money with three games of ten ends. This week the Bowling Club will be starting CAFÉ- STYLE food. Burgers, steak sandwiches, nuggets, scallops, dim sims, battered fish, chips, wedges. Dine-in or take away. Open 5pm Friday, Saturday from 1.30pm. This is a trial only for people in the community, due to the closure of the Majestic Café. Bowling Club AGM, Wednesday 26 th Oct commencing at 7pm. All positions on the board will be vacant. If we cannot get a committee, there is a very high risk of closing the doors of the club by the end of October. 7 HABIT OF MIND AND SPORT AWARD RECIPIENTS FOR WEEK 1 SCHOOL HAPPENINGS Year 5/6 students along with Mrs Payne, Mrs James, Mr Cattle and Jason Lewis have had an event filled 4 days in Canberra. Some of the places visited include Parliament House, the Mint, the Australian Institute of Sport and the War Memorial. They have also had fun rock climbing and at laser tag. More photos and a full report will be in next weeks newsletter. Recently as an extra-curricular activity Jack Wason completed the NCSS Challenge (Beginners) This challenge is run online for school students by the School of Information Technologies at the University of Sydney. For 5 weeks a set of Python teaching resources are distributed to participants along with a set of questions testing this material. Students have a week to submit their solutions to the website where they are automatically marked. Jack completed this work during lunchtimes and after school. He received a High Distinction for his work. Well done Jack.

8 YEAR 5/6 TREE PLANTING On Thursday 13 th October, year 5/6 went down to the Ungarie water tower and met Glenn and Craig from the Bland Shire Council. We planted trees near the water tower and we hope you notice them. Glenn and Craig show us how to plant the trees properly, put the guards on and how much to water them. Mrs James split us into three groups an d we got started right away. In each group, two people would plant the tree, two people would put the guard on, two people would water and two people put the mulch in. At the end everyone was really hot.
