1 IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER McCann Crescent, Lenah Valley Phone web: PO Box 429 Lenah Valley 7008 No 7 21 May 2015 Do to others as you would have them do to you. (Luke 6: 31) Dear Community Members, It was very heartening to hear the fantastic way many of our mother s were spoilt by their children for Mother s Day. Over the past few weeks the students from Grade 3 and 5 have been very busy completing the Federal NAPLAN test. The results will be sent home to parents in the coming months. I continue to thank all the students for the wonderful way we represent our school at all times. It is such a delight to walk through the classrooms and receive a bright and enjoyable welcome. Keep up the great work Edge Avenue Park The Hobart City Council are insisting that we have a Licence Agreement to utilise the Edge Avenue Park. We believe that the proposed Licence Agreement is not in the best interests of the school or our students. We feel it is inequitable, unreasonable and possibly discriminatory. We have begun a petition to be sent to the Hobart City Council General Manager and the Mayor. This petition will be handed around the school community and I ask every parent, grandparent, family member, neighbour, etc. to please sign it. We are aiming to get around 500 signatures. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at nick.mcgann@catholic.tas.edu.au All parents who have kindly taken petitions home can they please be returned to Casey in the Office by next Wednesday 28 May. A few Board members and myself will be organising a meeting with the Mayor and the General Manager of the Hobart City Council. Kangaroos AFL Club Over the past four weeks students from Grade 3 to 6 have been participating in football clinics run by the North Melbourne Football Club. They have kindly offered our families the opportunity to attend the North Melbourne versus West Coast game on Sunday 7 June at Bellerive Oval. If you are interested families will need to fill out the brochure attached to this newsletter. School Photos Yesterday we had our school photos taken. The class photos were in the Hall (unfortunately) and we had to postpone our whole school photo to Wednesday 26 August because of inclement weather. It was beautiful to see the time and effort all students (and Mum s & Dad s) spent in making their uniforms look spick and span and their hair looking great. City to Casino Around 20 students, parents and staff members participated in the City to Casino last Sunday. I would like to congratulate all members for their effort in running the race. A big thank you goes to Mr Paul Egan for organising a team of runners. Hopefully, we will increase our number of participants next year.
2 Working Bee We had a successful Working Bee last Saturday at school. The main emphasis of the Working Bee was to continue to make the grounds neater by weeding and spreading soft fall bark, cleaning out the gutters and preparing the Kindergarten Playground for the landscaper that will be starting in the first week of June. A massive thank you goes to the great number of community members that volunteered to help. We had over 40 helpers (students, parents, grandparents and TAFE students). There was a fantastic community feel at this event. Walk with Christ - Feast of Corpus Christi, Sunday 7th of June, Commencing from St Joseph's Church (Hobart) at 1.15 pm, processing to St Mary's Cathedral, where our prayer intentions will be presented and our veneration concludes. (3pm) Experience our rich Catholic heritage, as we join in solidarity with Catholics from all over the world, and through the ages, in this Walk with Christ. Can't join us in person? Prayer intentions can be added to the 'Book of Life' distributed to your school and in the keeping of the Principal and Religion and Faith Life Team at your College or School. The Walk with Christ is now in its 10 th year in Sydney and last year 6000 people turned out in a sense of prayerful solidarity to bring Christ to the world. Disco A reminder that the School Disco will be held in the Hall tomorrow between 5.30pm and 7.00pm. I look forward to seeing many members of the school community at this fun event. 3 Netball and Football Clinics (Grade 4/5/6) Through a new federally funded sports program, Sporting Schools, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School has been given the opportunity to provide extra sporting programs for our students. From Friday 15 th May, all girls from Grades 4, 5 and 6 will take part in a netball coaching clinic with Matilda Wiggins. Matilda has Foundation and Level 1 coaching qualifications, she regularly leads netball holiday clinics and has played netball at a junior state level. She will work in conjunction with our Grade 6 teacher, Mrs Jane Davies. We are hoping that Matilda s training will help prepare our students for the Grade 5/6 interschool netball/football roster that will occur in Term 3. With the money provided through the program, we will also able to purchase new sporting equipment for our school. All boys from Grade 4, 5 and 6 will join Mr Monaghan, Mr Egan and me for a football clinic. These students may bring football boots and mouth guards if they have them. All students may wear their school sports uniform on these days. The clinics will be held from 2pm-3pm on the following days. Friday 15 th May Friday 22 nd May Friday 29 th May Friday 5 th June Friday 19 th June Chess Next Monday 25 May we will be hosting a Chess Tournament in our Hall. Over 60 children from several schools will be participating. The following students will be representing Immaculate Heart: Gr 6: Isaac Jones, Mitchell Jones, Jack Treloar, Darcy Allen, Aidan Lietz, Sam Russell, Ben Lynch, Alex Brinton and Tyler Casey Gr5: Isaac Harwood and Toby Kop Gr 4: Axel Allanby, York Paul, Joe Vinen and Jai Lietz Gr 3: Harry Gibson, Jack Lloyd, Haig Kingston, Catherine Majak and Breanna Brown-Bourne I wish them all the best for Monday. Take care and God bless Mr Nick McGann Principal Call for Parent Help in the Vegetable Garden: The school vegetable garden is up and running again this term with 60 children helping once a fortnight. There is a roster coming out with the days your child/children are gardening. If you have time to come, help out and see the children enjoying their time in this outdoor classroom, please let the office know by or leave your name, number and day you can help out. Garden days and times: Monday 12pm -12:40pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 12:15pm- 12:50pm Thank you in advance Nick McGann Principal Hot Milos Warm up on these cold mornings with a hot milo and help Gr 2 raise money for Alexander Harris. Alex is 17 years old and needs treatment in Melbourne for brain cancer. Next Monday 25 th, Tuesday 26 th and Wed 27 th May Gr 2 will be selling milos at recess at the canteen for a gold coin donation. Please see the attached flyer to see how the school is supporting Alex.
4 Soccer Report The U6 Red team played last Saturday morning on a cold and windy Soldiers Memorial Oval. The conditions didn't hamper the boys spirit at all, and once again they played a high quality game against a slightly outclassed while still brave West Hobart team. Although having 1 player short due to illness, the boys still showed their competitive nature running, tackling and chasing right up to the final whistle. So focused on the ball were the team that they on occasions even chased and tackled each other. Something we will work on throughout the season. Already the team seems to have settled into a good even mix of attack and defence. Hamish Kingston and Oliver Crawford backed up last weeks great defensive game with another solid performance. Oliver had a couple a good strong kicks out of defence and Hamish got in the thick of the action tackling well. This allowed Obie Majak, Noah Smith and Manoli Mampieri to run forward and create many scoring opportunities. Obie's run on the ball nearly unstoppable unless Noah or Manoli tried to tackle him. When not tackling Obie or each other Manoli and Noah ran to great attacking positions which both created and scored goals. A highlight of the game was Noah taking a superb solo end to end run for a great goal, one minor problem being the fact he was running the wrong way and scored for the other team, nevertheless it was still a tremendous effort. All the boys tried hard and had a great time.
