5 #CE TIGERS CUT BACK ON ERRORS A bugaboo for Mizzou last season was its overall team defense, but second year head coach Steve Bieser and his staff appear to have the Tigers on the right track defensively through the first games this season. Through games last year, Mizzou had errors, almost twice as many as it has through the first games this season (just ). Mizzou was fielding.9 at this point a season ago and it has seen that number increase to.979 this year. Without an error over the last weekend s three-game set with La Salle, it was the Tigers first weekend series without an error since May -8,, in a series win at home over Kentucky. It was also the first three-game stretch without an error since April - of last season in two games vs. Florida and one vs. Illinois. Mizzou has allowed just one unearned run over its eight-game winning streak. FIRST IS FAR FROM THE WORST The Tigers have scored in the first inning in seven consecutive games during the eight-game winning streak. Mizzou has scored in the first inning in of games this season, going 9- in such contests. Mizzou has outscored opponents, -, in the first inning this season and - over the first two frames. Since head coach Steve Bieser took over the program, Mizzou has scored 8 times in the first inning in his 7 games (.8 per game) Mizzou had scored just first-inning runs in the previous two years combined ( games;. per game). PITCHING SHINING UNDER FIRST-YEAR PITCHING COACH FRED CORRAL Mizzou s pitching staff, despite losing first-round pick Tanner Houck and workhorse Cole Bartlett to the draft a year ago, has been tremendous through four weeks under first-year pitching coach Fred Corral. Last weekend against La Salle, Mizzou allowed just six runs and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of every game. Mizzou limited batters to.77 hitting on the weekend and surrendered just three extra-base hits. Over the eight-game win streak, Mizzou is limiting batters to.8 hitting with only seven extra-base hits (five doubles, two homers). Mizzou ranks in the national top- in six of the major pitching categories. Below is a look at the national marks for Mizzou s staff: 7th - WHIP -. 7th - Strikeout-Walk Ratio -.7 th - Hits Allowed -.7 th - ERA -. nd - Strikeouts/Nine Innings -. Mizzou is second in the SEC with 8 batters struck out as well, trailing only Kentucky (8). BOND HEATING UP Mizzou senior C Brett Bond was dubbed the No. college senior by PerfectGame.org during the offseason and turned down the MLB Draft (rd round by the Astros) to return to Mizzou for his senior season. Bond got off to a slow start by his standards this season, batting just.7 through the first six games of the season. Head coach Steve Bieser and his staff had Bond as the team s cleanup hitter to start the year, but his slow start dropped him down in the order. However, he s been on a tear over his last contests, raising his batting average from.7 to.9. Over his last games, Bond is batting. (-for-7) with a homer, two doubles, six RBI and eight runs. He was the team s top hitter during last weekend s series with La Salle, going -for-9 with two runs, a double and four RBI. Bond s success is key to the Mizzou order as his right-handed bat serves as the perfect split in the cleanup spot between a pair of Mizzou lefties who have enjoyed hot starts - sophomore three-hole hitter B Kameron Misner (.8//.79, HR, XBHs, RBI) and junior B Brian Sharp (./.9/.7, HR, 8 XBHs, RBI). If Bond stays hot, he would fit perfect between Misner in the three hole and Sharp in the five hole, putting a righty between the two lefties. TIGERS IN SEC WEEKLY HONORS Mizzou junior B Brian Sharp earned SEC Player of the Week on Feb. and RS junior RHP Bryce Montes De Oca earned SEC Pitcher of the Week the following Monday. That is noteworthy as Mizzou is the only SEC school to earn both awards this season. Sharp earned Player of the Week after throwing 9. shutout innings without a walk and strikeouts while scattering just seven hits, including. shutout innings at No. Miami in a 9- win, while going./.88/. with RBI at the plate that week. Northeastern, Sharp exploded for one of the most impressive single-game performances in school history in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader. In Mizzou s - win, Sharp went -for- with a pair of homers, a triple, a walk and a school-record nine RBI, tying the mark set by Jacob Priday on April, 8, vs. Texas. His total bases were the most since Priday had in that same game vs. Texas. A double shy of the cycle, Sharp came to bat in the eighth inning with the bases loaded. Instead of hitting the double he needed for the cycle, he launched a grand slam to right field to complete the historic performance. After throwing 7. innings of no-hit, shutout baseball in Mizzou s first no-hitter since, Montes De Oca was the SEC Pitcher of the Week,on March. Montes De Oca struck out a career-high in his longest career outing as a Tiger vs. UMBC, starting a combined no-hitter. It was the program s th no-no and the first since Max Scherzer and Michael Cole combined to no-hit Texas Tech in. That marked the first SEC Pitcher of the Week honor for Montes De Oca and he is the first Mizzou pitcher to earn this distinction since May, 7, when Cole Bartlett earned the nod after throwing a complete game, one-hitter at Tennessee. He also earned Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week for his efforts. Montes De Oca was untouchable during his Friday night vs. UMBC, his third start of the season. He carved up the UMBC order efficiently and likely would have finished the game had it not been for a -pitch fifth inning during which he walked two. Those were the only baserunners against him all evening. Just one batted ball left the infield during his 7. innings and only two of the outs he recorded were hit in the air, a foul out to first base and a shallow pop to left that was gloved by Mizzou SS Chris Cornelius. That start earned him a game score of 87, which was the fourth-best mark in the nation last week and second-best among schools from a Power /MIZZOUBASEBALL MISSOURI_BASEBALL

6 @MIZZOUBASEBALL MIZZOU IN ELITE COMPANY Following the first four weeks of play, Mizzou is in some pretty elite company as one of just four teams to rank in the top nationally in both ERA and runs scored. This week, Mizzou ranks th in the nation with runs scored and th with a. ERA. The only other teams nationally to do so are No. Florida (8th in runs, sixth in ERA), No. Texas A&M (th in runs, fifth in ERA) and No. 8 Arkansas (9th in runs, seventh in ERA). THREE TABBED TOP SENIORS Three Tigers were named to PerfectGame.org s Top College Seniors List, announced Jan.. Among the three Tigers listed, two rank in the national top four as RS junior Bryce Montes De Oca and senior C Brett Bond, check in at No. and No., respectively. Senior OF Trey Harris ranks No. on the list. Mizzou and Texas A&M are the only teams with two players ranked in the Top while the Tigers are the only team in the nation with three players ranked in the Top. Rankings are based on the players professional potential relative to the MLB Draft. Montes De Oca, a physical and imposing pitcher who can touch triple digits with his fastball, will be looked at as one of the anchors of Mizzou s pitching staff in. He went - with a.8 ERA in his first season as a starter as a redshirt sophomore in 7. He makes the list of seniors as he is in his fourth year with the program after earning a redshirt in. His. opponent batting average was the team s second-best mark last season while he struck out batters in. innings of work. His extra-base hits allowed were the team s second-fewest last season. Montes De Oca was drafted in the th round by the Nationals last season, but he elected to return for his RS junior season. Bond has been one of the most productive and consistent hitters over his three seasons in black and gold. He is coming off a career-best year during which he hit.7 with doubles, homers and RBI, all career-best marks. He also slugged a career-best.7 and scored a career-high runs as Mizzou s everyday catcher. Bond is a.7 career hitter and his career homers are just seven shy of cracking the all-time Mizzou Top-. He was drafted in the rd round by the Astros before electing to return for his senior season. Harris has been one of the most electrifying players in college baseball over the last three seasons and finally showed off his pure power potential in a career year at the plate in 7. Harris slugged a team-best homers last year while hitting a career-best.8 with 8 RBI, a team-best. His.8 slugging percentage was also a team-best as he added eight doubles to his homers. BIESER AMONG COLLEGE BASEBALL S ELITE Mizzou head coach Steve Bieser is coming off a - season in his first year at the helm. That made him the winningest first-year head coach in school history and also placed him among the elite of elite in the college baseball coaching ranks. Dating back to his final three years at SEMO, Bieser has now won at least games in each of the last four seasons. He is one of just active Division I coaches to do so: Steve Bieser - Mizzou Monte Lee - Clemson Dan Heefner - Dallas Baptist Kevin O Sullivan - Florida Mike Martin - Florida State Todd Whiting - Houston Dan McDonnell - Louisville Paul Mainieri - LSU Matt Riser - SELA Jim Schlossnagle - TCU Rob Childress - Texas A&M Tim Corbin - Vanderbilt Brian O Connor - Virginia BOND, HARRIS CLOSING IN ON MIZZOU CAREER MARKS Mizzou seniors Brett Bond and Trey Harris rank among the top seniors in college baseball this season and highlight a potent Mizzou offense returning to the diamond in. Both have been fixtures in the middle of the Mizzou order over their first three years with the program. As one might expect, each is moving in on all-time career top- marks at Mizzou.
