11 11 SCOUTING TENNESSEE Tennessee enters this weekend 19-4 and 3-3 in the SEC under third-year head coach Dave Serrano. The Volunteers come to Columbia after winning one of three games vs. Auburn last week at home. Tennessee opened the SEC slate winning two of three games at Missouri. Freshman Nick Senzel has been Tennessee s top hitter with a.352 average (25- for-71) with 19 runs scored, four doubles, a triple, a homer and 21 RBI. His on-base percentage is also.460 with a.479 slugging mark. UT s top power hitter currently is Scott Price, who is batting.348 (31-for-89) with three homers and 20 RBI. Sophomore outfielder Christin Stewart enters with a 10-game hitting streak. His average is.322 (28-for-87) with 19 runs scored, six doubles, three triples, three homers and 17 RBI. He has a.563 slugging percentage. Sophomore shortstop A.J. Simcox was ranked the No. 5 best prospect in the SEC for the 2015 MLB Draft. He has lived up to his billing this season with a.341 average (28-for-82) and eight stolen bases. The Vols pitching staff is led by senior right-hander Nick Williams, who will get the ball on Friday night. He is 3-2 with a 1.88 ERA with a team-high 38.1 innings pitched. Opponents are batting just.172 against him. He has 25 strikeouts to eight walks. He has allowed nine runs, eight earned, on 22 hits. He is followed up by freshman right-hander Hunter Martin, who is 2-1 with a 0.98 ERA in five games. Sophomore right-hander Andrew Lee is the Sunday starter with a 3-0 record and a 3.94 ERA in 32.0 innings. LAST TIME VS. TENNESSEE South Carolina swept a three-game series at Tennessee in last year s meeting. Carolina finished the weekend with 36 runs and 45 hits in three games vs. the Volunteers. Max Schrock s weekend performance in Knoxville with a.583 batting average (7-for-12), five runs scored and seven RBI earned him SEC Freshman of the Week honors. His game-winning RBI double in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Gamecocks to a 5-4 win over Tennessee. He followed that up with a double, a homer and two RBI in the 12-8 win over the Volunteers. In the series finale, he had a careerhigh four hits with a career-high four RBI as well as two runs scored in the 19-2 win over Tennessee. In the series opener, both teams were deadlocked at 4-4 when the Gamecocks caught a break in the top of the ninth as a fielding error by third baseman Will Maddox allowed Dantzler to reach base to open the inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved Dantzler into scoring position, Schrock put Carolina ahead by a run as he launched a 1-0 pitch from UT reliever Zack Godley over the head of center fielder Pierce Bily for a double giving Carolina a one-run cushion. Tennessee looked to mount one more rally in the ninth as Jeff Moberg led off with a walk against Tyler Webb. That would be it for the Volunteers though as Webb retired the next three batters in order. Maddox fouled off a bunt attempt on a nice diving play by third baseman Chase Vergason, followed by strikeouts of A.J. Simcox and Scott Price. Game two saw South Carolina pound out 17 hits with all nine starters reaching base at least once on the way to a 12-8 win. Left-hander Adam Westmoreland was tremendous in relief allowing just one run on five hits in a season-high six innings. The 17-hit performance for the Gamecocks featured three-hit games from Connor Bright, Graham Saiko and Chase Vergason. The Gamecocks belted out a season-high 21 hits with 10 different Gamecocks recording at least one hit on the way to a 19-2 victory in the series finale to sweep the Volunteers. Sophomore left-hander Jordan Montgomery worked four scoreless innings with no walks and a pair of strikeouts. Senior right-hander Colby Holmes pitched the final five innings to earn the win. He allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Left-hander Jordan Montgomery worked four scoreless innings with no walks and a pair of strikeouts. Holbrook s offensive prowess made an immediate impact on the South Carolina baseball program in his first four seasons. His guidance was instrumental in helping the Gamecocks to back-to-back national championships in 2010 and 2011 at the College World Series as well as a national runner-up finish in Holbrook helped in the development of two-time All-America Christian Walker, who led the Gamecocks in all three Triple Crown categories in 2011 and He finished 2012 hitting.321 (77-for- 240) with 11 homers and 55 RBI as well as a.450 on-base percentage and a.525 slugging percentage. Walker was a fourth round selection by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2012 MLB Draft. Walker was named to the CWS All-Tournament team for a third time. He tied a CWS record for hits also in a career as he notched 28 that put him alongside Dustin Ackley of North Carolina ( ), ironically also a player that Holbrook recruited and coached while in Chapel Hill. Holbrook worked to bridge together a new crop of Gamecocks in the 2012 season as he molded newcomers Tanner English, Grayson Greiner and Joey Pankake into SEC All-Freshman honorees. All three would factor into Carolina s successful season. The group of newcomers was also rated the top recruiting class in the country in 2011 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 6 in the nation by Baseball America. Holbrook played a key role in 2011 MLB supplemental draft selection Jackie Bradley Jr. s Gamecock career. In 2010 Bradley was a All-SEC selection and College World Series Most Outstanding Player. That season, Holbrook helped to oversee an offense that peaked in the postseason with a.309 batting average in 12 postseason contests. Evan Marzilli was the team s top postseason hitter with a.419 average (18-for-43) with Walker right behind him at.389 (21-for-54) and Bradley hitting.348 with four HR and 17 RBI. Carolina finished the season with a.300 team batting average as well as a.392 on-base percentage. The squad s 734 hits were second highest in the conference with the team also tallying 298 walks, 14th highest in the country. In 2009, Holbrook s first season, the Gamecocks finished with a team batting average of.310 on the year, the highest average in over nine seasons, along with an improved on-base percentage of.394 and a.528 slugging percentage. Carolina was fifth in the nation with 109 home runs. Among the players he tutored that first year were Freshman All-America Jackie Bradley Jr. and All-SEC selections, Justin Dalles, Nick Ebert, Bobby Haney and DeAngelo Mack. Prior to joining the Gamecock program, Holbrook worked for 15 seasons on the North Carolina coaching staff. While at UNC, the Tar Heels made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances including four NCAA Super Regionals and three trips to the College World Series. The 2007 squad also captured an ACC championship, the first in Chapel Hill since 1990 when Holbrook was a freshman player. Holbrook and his wife, the former Jennifer Hilliard, were married in August of They have two sons, Reece, who was born on May 4, 2002, and Cooper, who was born on June 14, CHAD HOLBROOK BY THE NUMBERS -- ENTERING THE 2013 SEASON.731 WINNING PERCENTAGE AT CAROLINA SINCE COACH HOLBROOK JOINED STAFF 2 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS HE HAS COACHED ON (2010, 2011) 5 COLLEGE WORLD SERIES NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES APPEARANCES (2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012) 6 COLLEGE WORLD SERIES TEAMS HE HAS COACHED ON (2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012) 10 NO. 10 BEST RECRUITER IN ALL OF COLLEGE SPORTS BY ESPNU & ESPN THE MAGAZINE 16 NCAA TOURNAMENT TEAMS HE HAS COACHED ON 16 PLAYERS RECRUITED BY COACH HOLBROOK THAT HAVE PLAYED IN THE BIG LEAGUES 18 ALL-AMERICA HITTERS HE HAS COACHED 21 SEASONS HE HAS COACHED IN COLLEGE BASEBALL 43 ALL-CONFERENCE HITTERS HE HAS COACHED 241 NUMBER OF WINS AT SOUTH CAROLINA IN 5 SEASONS HE HAS COACHED WITH GAMECOCK PROGRAM
