2 Recently The 2017 regular season MVC title is the first for the Redbirds since The Redbirds' 20-6 league record is the second-best Valley record in Illinois State program history. The Redbirds went 3-1 at the inaugural NISC Regional to clinch the Region 3 title. Illinois State's bats came alive in game two with a 6-0 shutout over Michigan State for Ali Domkuski's first career shutout. Weekly MVC Awards Jordan de los Reyes Player May 1 For the second week in a row, Jordan de los Reyes made history as the Illinois State career home run record holder, totaling 54 home runs. The senior belted at least one home run in each game last week, recording an astounding slugging percentage. During her 6-for-8 week, the Moline-native drove in 14 RBIs off five extra-base hits and three sac-flies. De los Reyes upped her 2017 total to 66 RBIs, surpassing the Illinois State single-season record by 10. Sarah Finck Pitcher April 24 Finck led the Redbirds in the circle, recording four wins and a save in the five games this week. The junior tossed 23.0 complete innings, giving up only five runs in three games. The Redbirds' ace owns a 9-0 record in her last 11 appearances, closing out the remaining two games with scoreless innings. Jordan de los Reyes Player April 24 De los Reyes made history last week by becoming career RBI record holder, not only for Illinois State but also for the Missouri Valley Conference. De los Reyes posted one of her best weeks of the season, batting.692 with a slugging percentage thanks to three home runs and a double. The East Moline native's 10 RBIs this week ups her career total to 174. With two intentional walks against her last week, the senior continued to dominate at the plate, extending her hitting streak to six games including two three-hit games. Riley Strandgard Player & Scholar Athlete April 17 Logging four-straight multi-hit games, Riley Strandgard led the Redbirds with a.692 average, slugging an even The junior capped off her 9-for-13 week with a perfect 3-for-3 appearance in the weekend finale. Strandgard drove in four runs throughout the weekend, including a two-rbi home run. Quick Hitters MVC AWARD WINNERS Jordan de los Reyes garnered the prestigious MVC Player of the Year award in addition to first-team and all-defensive team honors. Allison Spence, Sarah Finck, Shannon Felde and Riley Hale collected first-team all-conference honors. Annie Heineman rounded out the group with second-team honors, totaling eight for the Redbirds, which is the third-most MVC awards in program history. Heineman and Finck were also named to the MVC All-Tournament team. RANKING REDBIRDS After the Redbirds 13th and 14th consecutive MVC wins, Illinois State earned a vote in the NFCA Top-25 Coaches Poll for the first time since 2011 on May 2. The Redbirds are ranked top-25 in three statistical categories: 12th in home runs/game (1.08), 15th in slugging (.484) and 23rd in double plays/game (.47). Tied Illinois State single-season home run record. 4th RBIs/game th Home runs/game th Home runs th Total Bases Allison Spence Scholar Athlete April 11 The sophomore led the team with a slugging percentage thanks to two solo home runs and an RBI double. Spence had a perfect outing at the plate in Sunday's contest, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. She also drew three walks, helping her post a.700 on-base percentage. Riley Strandgard Scholar Athlete March 28 Strandgard led the Redbirds with six RBIs during her 5-for-11 weekend against reigning MVC Tournament Champion Wichita State. The captain slugged three extra-base hits, including a two-run home run to left field in the series finale. Strandgard plated two runs in each game of the series, while highlighting the weekend with a 3-for-5 game in Saturday's nightcap. Jordan de los Reyes Player March 20 Jordan de los Reyes opened conference play with a bang, going 7-for-10 with a slugging percentage. The senior led the Redbirds with seven RBI and seven hits during the week. She failed to strikeout while being walked four times at Indiana State. On Saturday alone, de los Reyes went 6-for-8 with three runs and seven RBI in the Redbirds first MVC sweep since Shannon Felde Player February 20 She hit.571 with three RBI on four hits before the ASU Littlewood Classic was called due to rain. In her fourth-consecutive multi-hit game, the sophomore sparked the Redbirds offense against Arizona State with one RBI. In the historic win over No. 17 Mizzou, Felde drove in two runs to give ISU the early lead over the perennial powerhouse en route to the 7-3 win. Alyssa Wiebel Newcomer February 13 Wiebel led the Illinois State softball team with six RBIs, two home runs, and a slugging percentage. The freshman went 3-for-4 in her collegiate debut against No. 25 USF. Wiebel launched a two-run home run against No. 6 Michigan on Friday one of only three home runs allowed by UM. Wiebel went 2-for-3 against Delaware with three RBIs and three runs. Jordan de los Reyes' National Rankings 6th RBIs th Slugging th Average HALE YEA! With a.349 average, the Redbirds' leadoff hitter, Riley Hale, has logged 16 multi-hit games. Hale currently has an 25-game reached-base streak - the third longest streak in program history. 4 Quick Hitters "THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE" The walkup song for the Redbirds' ace, Sarah Finck, is accurate. With a record, the junior pitched her second- career one-hitter at Evansville after her first at Drake. The Redbirds ace owns a 14-3 MVC record, going 11-3 in her last 16 appearances. FIGHTING FELDE - TOUGH TO STRIKEOUT With only three strikeouts this season, Shannon Felde is one of the toughest players to strikeout in the country. The sophomore owns the second-longest known hitting streak in program history at 21 games (Feb. 10-Apr. 8) with 16 multi-hit games. WALK-OFF WINNERS IN BRADLEY TWIN-BILL The Redbirds opened up game one with four home runs in the first inning, capped off by a Riley Hale two-run single in the fifth inning for the 9-1 win in five innings. After falling to a five-run deficit, Illinois State's energy kept the team focused through a Shannon Felde RBI and two home runs by Jordan de los Reyes, plating five, for the 6-5 win in the bottom of the seventh. MELINDA'S 1,000 On April 14, head coach Melinda Fischer tallied her 1,000th win at Illinois State. With over 1,000 career wins to her name, Fischer is the 20th coach in NCAA Softball history to earn 1,000 wins at one school. She is the 10th Division I coach to do this. DOMINATING IN DES MOINES The Redbirds logged their first sweep at Drake since 2007, earning their third MVC for the first time since AND-OH MAN THAT'S A SCHOOL RECORD The school record eight home runs in April 9th's 15-0 win ties the third-most home runs in a single game in NCAA history. Four different teams (Florida twice, UTSA twice, Oklahoma, College of Charleston) achieved eight home runs in a single game seven times prior to the 2017 season. The previous Illinois State single-game record was four home runs, matched seven times (Last: INS on April 20, 2011). The third inning's four consecutive home runs tied a previous school record from 2010 at Missouri State. IT S BEEN A WHILE IN WICHITA Saturday s doubleheader sweep of the Shockers was the first at Wichita for the Redbirds since It was also the first series win since Wichita State previously won eight-straight from 2014 to REDBIRDS DOWN NO. 17 MIZZOU On Feb. 17, 2017, the Illinois State softball team defeated 17th-ranked Mizzou, 7-3 at the Arizona State Littlewood Classic marking the Redbirds first ranked win since A pair of home runs and a two-run double solidified the Redbird s 7-3 over the national powerhouse. First win over Mizzou since May 5, 1995 (W, 5-1) First win over a ranked opponent since March 3, 2013 (def. #13 Lafayette, 4-3) SCHEDULE OUTLOOK Illinois State begins the 2017 campaign on the road at five tournaments and two league series before the home opener on April 1. The Redbirds nonconference slate features 11 NCAA Tournament teams from 2016, including Super-Regional winners Michigan and LSU. The Redbirds will face seven teams ranked in the NCFA s preseason coaches Top 25 poll. PRESEASON MVC Returning starters, catcher Jordan de los Reyes and shortstop Riley Strandgard were named to the Valley s 2017 preseason all-conference team last week. Illinois State was selected for a fifth-place finish in the conference standings, behind league favorite Drake. O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN! The Illinois State softball has selected five captains this season: seniors Annie Heineman and Jordan de los Reyes, and juniors Alex Caliva, Riley Strandgard, and Abby Turczyn. YOUNGEST IN THE VALLEY With only two seniors on the 23-person roster, the Illinois State softball team has the youngest squad in the Valley and the 10th-youngest squad in NCAA Division I Softball this season. Annie Heineman and Jordan de los Reyes make up nine percent of the team, consisting of seven freshmen, sophomores, and juniors each. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK The Illinois State softball team added seven newcomers to its roster this season, including six freshmen and one transfer from Heartland CC. The Redbirds freshmen pack a punch with two conference titles, four regional titles, two sectional titles, and one state championship. Among the group, there is an Iowa 1A Pitcher of the Year, a Legacy Award winner with over 100 career hits, and an Iowa Softball Gatorade Player of the Year. In high school, the six incoming freshmen set single-season double, home run, and RBI records, in addition to ranking second on Iowa s all-time home run list. SEEING DOUBLE The Redbirds thier first pair of twins on their roster, Anni and Kadi Borries from Teutopolis, Illinois. UNIFORM PATCH Redbird student-athletes, coaches and staff will wear the patch in memory of the SEVEN men Illinois State and the Bloomington-Normal community lost on April 7, The patch is dedicated to the memory of the SEVEN staff and friends of ISU who perished in an airplane crash. The crash occurred while approaching to land at the Central Illinois Regional Airport near Bloomington, Illinois. The men were returning from the NCAA Men s Final Four in Indianapolis. 5 Regular Headlines WEEK THIRTEEN - MVC REGULAR SEASON CHAMPS Despite the three-game setback to Northern Iowa, Illinois State earned a share of the 2017 MVC title on Senior Day. The 2017 regular season MVC title is the first for the Redbirds since The Redbirds' 20-6 league record is the second-best Valley record in Illinois State program history. WEEK TWELVE - RECORDS IN THE RAIN With a game cancelled at Evansville from rain, Illinois State logged is sixth MVC sweep with a pair of run-rule wins. Jordan de los Reyes, the new ISU career home run record holder, is the MVC Player of the Week for the third time. Caitlyn Daly tied the ISU single-game records with three HRs and seven RBIs. Sarah Finck tossed a one-hitter. WEEK ELEVEN - FIVE AND OH The Redbirds walked away unscathed with a perfect record that included two come-from-behind wins. Jordan de los Reyes penned her name in the ISU and MVC record books as the career RBI leader. In the circle, Morgan Christner tossed her first win with Sarah Finck going 4-0 for the MVC's weekly honor. WEEK TEN - DOMINATING DRAKE The Redbirds held the Bulldogs to five runs throughout the weekend, earning their third conference sweep of Sarah Finck owns a 7-0 record in her last eight appearances, including a five-inning one-hitter. Riley Strandgard logged multi-hit games in each contest to earn MVC's weekly honors. WEEK NINE - RECORD BREAKING SWEEP OVER LOYOLA Hosting Loyola, Jordan de los Reyes and Allison Spence led ISU with two home runs in the record breaking eight home run finale. Four others accounted for homers in Sunday's win that matched the third-most home runs in a single game in NCAA history. ISU's pitching staff tossed three gems, accounting for a 0.37 ERA on the weekend. Ali Domkuski through 6.1 hitless innnigs before allowing two - her second two-hitter of the season. Sarah Finck followed suit with a two-hitter. WEEK EIGHT - HOME SWEET HOME Down 7-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Redbirds rallied five runs in the seventh to earn the 8-7 win in eight innings over Southern Illinois on Saturday. Illinois State logged 33 hits against Southern Illinois in the 1-2 weekend. WEEK SEVEN - WINNING IN WICHITA Illinois State won its second conference series of the season at Wichita State, 2-1. Outhitting the Shockers 20-13, Illinois State did not trail throughout Saturday s twin bill to come away with the Redbirds first doubleheader sweep at Wichita State since The Shockers took the series finale Sunday in five inn. Helping the Redbirds to a series win over Wichita State, Riley Strandgard was named the Missouri Valley Conference female Scholar-Athlete of the Week. WEEK SIX - HOT START IN THE VALLEY With 34 hits in the trio of games, Illinois State began MVC play with a sweep of Indiana State, marking the first since 2015 at Evansville. It is also the best start to Valley play since 2010 when the Redbirds won 10 straight. Jordan de los Reyes earned the MVC s Player of the Week honor following her 7-for-10 weekend with seven RBI. WEEK FIVE - SPRING BREAK IN THE SUNSHINE STATE The Redbirds slugged four home runs against Rutgers with two against Fairfield. Jordan de los Reyes led the home run efforts with three, followed by Riley Strandgard with two and Allison Spence with one. In her first game back, Shannon Felde went 7-for-13 at the plate, batting.558 with seven RBI. Leading ISU with nine RBI at FAU, Riley Strandgard hit for the cycle between Sunday s games. Jordan de los Reyes tallied five extra base hits, slugging.900 while driving in seven. WEEK FOUR - EARLY LEADS NOT ENOUGH IN THE BAYOU The Redbirds led each of their opponents at the LSU Tiger Invite but one hot inning took away Illinois State s edge to drop four out of five games. Illinois State s lone win came in 2-1 fashion over Florida Atlantic on Saturday. Pitcher Sarah Finck earned the win in the circle while Alyssa Wiebel s RBI-triple scored Taylor Vanderpool for the game-winning run. WEEK THREE - BRINGING THE WIN(D)S TO KENTUCKY The Redbirds outscored their opponents at Western Kentucky s Hilltopper Spring Fling, in the four-game tournament to come away with a 3-1 record. Illinois State faced a variety of weather conditions during the weekend from sunny, blue skies to 25+ mph winds to temperatures in the 30s. Ali Domkuski struck out a career-high, nine batters with two hits against Austin Peay. WEEK TWO - TOPPING NO. 17 BEFORE RAIN IN THE DESERT For the first time in 22 years, the Illinois State softball team defeated 17th-ranked Mizzou, 7-3 marking the program s first ranked win since The Redbirds capitalized on a pair of home runs and a two-run double to solidify the win. Illinois State head coach Melinda Fischer, who begins her 32nd season at the helm of the Redbird softball program this spring, can claim such an honor. The all-time winningest coach in Illinois State Athletics history. Missouri Valley Conference All-Centennial Head Softball Coach. A combined nine Missouri Valley Conference and Gateway Athletic Conference regular-season championships. A 2010 NFCA Hall of Fame inductee. A 2016 ISU College of Applied Science and Technology Hall of Fame Inductee. All of that and more define Illinois State head softball coach Melinda Fischer. Fischer s 1,000 career victories, spread out among 33 previous seasons as a collegiate head coach (at both Eastern Illinois [ ] and Illinois State [1986-present]), rank her as the 17th-winningest coach in NCAA Division I softball history and the 10th-winningest active head coach. She s continued her historical rise through the career coaching ranks with her 1,000th-career win in an 8-2 victory over Northern Iowa in the MVC Tournament on May 8, Since 1986, during her 31 previous seasons leading the Illinois State softball program, Fischer has directed the Redbirds to national prominence, most recently with their ninth NCAA Regional appearance in Fischer has led her teams to 10 regular-season Valley titles. She also has two Gateway regular-season championships to her credit, as well as four Valley Tournament titles. Fischer began her coaching career in 1974 after a four-year stint as an ISU student-athlete. She became a graduate assistant coach for ISU s softball and basketball teams while completing a master s degree in physical education. As an athlete at Illinois State, Fischer helped lead the Redbirds to the 1969 Women s College World Series, coming in as the runner-up to earn her spot in the ISU Athletics Hall of Fame in Fischer continues to utilize her softball knowledge, not only as a coach and administrator, but also as a teacher. She contributes her skill through camps and clinics, while continuing to mold Illinois State into a national contender.
