Where We Stand At 17-11, the RubberDucks are in 1 st place in the EL West, 1 ½ games ahead of 2 nd -place Altoona and Richmond. Gary Kendall is in his eighth season as manager, and recently managed his 1,000 th Baysox game, and enters the series with 500+ wins. The Baysox won the 2015 EL championship, defeating the Reading Fightin Phils, three games to two. It is the only league title for the franchise, which began in Notable alumni of the Baysox include Jake Arietta and Manny Machado. The Bay in Baysox refers to Chesapeake Bay, located about 20 miles from Prince George s Stadium. Transaction Wire The Indians announced that INF Todd Hankins has been transferred to the RubberDucks from Triple-A Columbus. Hankins, 27, appeared in 16 games for the Clippers, starting nine, and hit.300 (9-30) with no homers or RBI. Hankins has appeared in 303 games for the RubberDucks the last three seasons. Additionally, RHP Jared Robinson has been transferred to extended spring training. On Deck The RubberDucks will continue the road trip with the first of three games at Richmond, Monday night at 6:35. Akron Baseball: A Winning Tradition This is the 30 th season of Double-A baseball in Northeast Ohio, and the 22 nd in downtown Akron. The franchise began as the Canton-Akron Indians in 1989, and then moved to Canal Park in Akron as the Aeros in Known as the RubberDucks since 2014, Akron has qualified for the Eastern League playoffs 16 times overall, and 10 of the last 16 years. 2 Last Game Recap RubberDucks 4 Baysox 2 Saturday, 5/5/18 Summary Akron s Connor Marabell and Dorssys Paulino delivered timely home runs in the seventh inning to lift the first-place RubberDucks to a 4-2 victory over the Bowie Baysox Saturday night at Prince George s Stadium in Bowie, Md. Turning Point Marabell and Paulino connected off lefty John Means (0-4) in the top of the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie. Marabell led off the inning with his third of the year to give the RubberDucks (17-11) a 3-2 lead. One out later, Paulino drilled an opposite-field, line-drive homer to right to extend the lead to 4-2. It was Paulino s first of the year. Mound Presence Cameron Mingo made his second start of the season for the RubberDucks, rejoining the club from Low-A Lake County when scheduled starter Dominic MeMasi was promoted to Columbus. Mingo worked five innings and allowed just two hits and a single run a homer by Bowie s Cedric Mullins. Mingo left with a 2-1 lead and turned things over to fellow-newcomer Jared Robinson. Making his Double-A debut, Robinson allowed a run in the sixth on a RBI single by Corban Joseph which tied the game, 2-2. Robinson (1-0) then worked a scoreless seventh after the Ducks took the lead. Henry Martinez and Argenis Angulo each followed with a scoreless inning, with Angulo posting his first save. Duck Tales Daniel Salters remained hot, slugging a two-run double in the second inning off Means. Salters now has seven RBi in the series. Marabell s homer extended his hitting streak to nine games. Paulino finished 2-3 on the night. Andrew Calica singled in his first plate appearance to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Tyler Krieger was 0-4, snapping his 11-game hit streak. RubberDucks 2018 Field Staff #6 Tony Mansolino, Manager Former minor league infielder Tony Mansolino is in his first season as manager of the Akron RubberDucks. Mansolino, 35, was named the 17 th manager in franchise history on January 17, He replaces Mark Budzinski, who was promoted to the major league staff after managing the RubberDucks last season. This season marks Mansolinoi s third as a manager in the Indians minor league system. A native of Newport Beach, California, and now a resident of Nashville, Tennessee, Mansolino managed the Class-A Lynchburg Hillcats last season. He was named Carolina League Manager of the Year after guiding the Hillcats to a stellar overall record and a Carolina League co-championship. Mansolino made his managerial debut with the Lake County Captains in Drafted by the Pirates in the 26 th round of the 2005 draft out of Vanderbilt University, Mansolino played professionally for six years in the minor leagues and was a career.231 hitter with 19 homers and 173 RBI. In addition to the Pirates organization, he also played in the Phillies minor league system and with three independent clubs before moving into coaching in He served as the RubberDucks hitting coach in Mansolino played four years for head coach Tim Corbin at Vandy, including an NCAA tournament appearance in Mansolino s father, Doug, is the minor league field coordinator for the Phillies. #47 Rigo Beltran, Pitching Coach After spending the past three seasons as pitching coach at Class-A Lynchburg, former major league left-hander Rigo Beltran will serve as the RubberDucks pitching coach in Beltran, 48, joined the Indians in 2014, following seven years as a pitching coach in the Reds organization. After being selected in the 26 th round of the 1991 draft by the St. Louis Cardinals out of the University of Wyoming, Beltran went on to pitch professionally for 16 seasons. He appeared in 78 major league games with the Cardinals, Mets, Rockies and Expos, going a combined 2-3, with a 4.40 ERA. Born in Tijuana, Mexico, and now a resident of Delray Beach, Florida, Beltran served as the pitching coach for Mexico in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. #25 Kevin Howard, Hitting Coach RubberDucks hitters will have the luxury of getting advice from a College World Series champion this season, as former University of Miami star Kevin Howard will serve as the RubberDucks hitting coach. This will be his fourth season as a hitting coach in the Indians organization. Howard, 36, was a sophomore infielder when the Hurricanes defeated Stanford to win the 2001 college baseball title. The following summer, he was drafted in the 5 th round by the Reds and went on to play professionally for 10 seasons. Howard slugged 93 homers and drove in 540 runs during his minor league career. He was born in Hinsdale, Illinois, attended high school in Westlake Village, California, and now makes his off-season home in Miami Beach. #13 Dennis Malave, Bench Coach A fixture in the Indians player development system, Dennis Malave assumes the role of bench coach for the RubberDucks in Malave, 38, is entering his 14 th year in the organization. He spent the last seven seasons as a hitting coach for Indians rookie-level players in Goodyear, Arizona. He spent two seasons as a bullpen catcher for the Cleveland Indians from Malave moved into the coaching ranks after playing in the Tribe system for eight years, starting in 1997 when he was signed as a free agent. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Malave lives in Goodyear during the off-season. Jeremy Heller, Trainer The 2018 season mark s Heller s fifth in Akron and his 14 th overall as a trainer in the Indians organization. He was named Athletic Trainer of the Year in the Eastern League in Paul Synenkyj, Strength and Conditioning Coach Now in his 8 th season in the Indians organization, Paul Synenkyj will oversee the team s strength and conditioning program. Synenkyj holds degrees in physical education from Cleveland State and Akron.
