2 FROM THE PRESIDENT The Grand Sport February 2014 Brrrrrr! Hope everyone is keeping warm. What a crazy few weeks we have had. I heard a few club members have been in hospital with different issues including a case H1N1!! Hope they are all feeling better soon. I didn't make the Bandit Run but heard we had a HUGE turnout! Jeb and Lori always do such a great job. A big thank you to them for organizing such a big group. Close to a 100 people I heard. The Chili Cook off was another great success, with this being the 9th year that Sharon and Tom have kindly let us descend on their barn. Another fantastic bonfire as well! A big THANK YOU to this year s judges they were serious! They spent a couple hours researching the web for the best way to judge a good chili! Check our pages 15, 16, 17 of this newsletter, as well as, our Shutterfly site there are great photos from both of these events! Remember that club shirts can be ordered through Once you are on the site, go to "online store". Down the left hand side you will see San Jacinto Corvette Club, select and order from there. As we look ahead, February brings us the Valentine Day Rally. If you have an idea for an event, please contact Valarie Hendershot and she will be more than happy to help you work through the process of putting on an event. For those of you who were at the January club meeting, remember to put your loose change in your SJCC coin tin. If the tin is full, just put the coins in a zip lock bag and bring it along to the next club meeting. Remember to put your name on the bag. For those who didn't make the last club meeting make sure you see Ken Bakenhus to get your SJCC coin tin. Save the Wave Suzanne Page Up Page Down 2
3 From Our Sponsor AutoNation Chevrolet Gulf Freeway We want to earn your business WARNING: The C7 Z06 will have enough down force to push California into the ocean, enough power to cross the U.S. at warp speed, and the looks to get into the Miss America pageant! WELL.MAYBE THAT S JUST A LITTLE HYPERBOLE! Detroit Chevrolet today introduced the most track-capable Corvette in the brand s history the 2015 Corvette Z06. It elevates the performance envelope for Corvette with unprecedented levels of aerodynamic downforce, at least 625 horsepower from an all-new supercharged engine, and an all-new, highperformance eight-speed automatic transmission all building on the advanced driver technologies introduced on the Corvette Stingray. The new Z06 delivers levels of performance, technology and design that rival the most exotic supercars in the world, said Mark Reuss, president, General Motors North America. And the Z06 leverages the engineering expertise of GM, offering the choice of two world-class transmissions, supercar performance without supercar fuel consumption, and technologies that make it easier to fully enjoy the incredible experience of driving it. The 2015 is the first Corvette Z06 to offer a supercharged engine, an automatic transmission and, thanks to a stronger aluminum frame, a removable roof panel. The new, supercharged 6.2L engine is expected to deliver at least 625 horsepower (466 kw), and can be matched with either a seven-speed manual or an allnew, high-performance eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters for manual control. The aluminum frame carries over from the Corvette Stingray and will also be used essentially unchanged for the Corvette Racing C7.R. A track-focused Z07 Performance Package adds unique components for true aerodynamic downforce, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires for enhanced grip, and Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake rotors that improve braking performance and contribute to greater handling through reduced unsprung weight. Although development testing is ongoing, the Z07 package has already recorded some of the fastest lap times ever for a Corvette, surpassing even the ZR1. Best Regards, Paul Fisher, Fleet Manager (281)
4 MEMBERSHIP REPORT Membership February ended with a membership count of 207. The corrected count at the beginning of 2014 is 167 plus 3 Lifetime SJCC members (Jack Cannata and Marv and Harriet Brittenham), or 170. This is a renewal rate of 82%, with 70-80% being typical. At the 1/20/2014 Board meeting one new member was approved and 3 more renewals were received, for a total of 174. Please welcome the return of former member Stu Miller of Bellaire with his black 2002 Z06; he has participated in our last few meetings and events. New membership and late renewals remain at $70 (single) and $90 (couple). Please make your check payable to SJCC and mail to me, or give it to me or an officer. Thanks! Paul Grout/SJCC Membership: 2605 Lakeway Dr., Seabrook TX THE ART BUSHELL CRITERIA WHO IS Art Bushell? And WHAT IS the Art Bushell Criteria? I was in college, and my neighbor Art was in high school. He got me hooked on hot rodding in the late 50s, and convinced me I could take on a project myself. And so I did on weekends and summers with the help of his tips, leads, and contacts. And with a few junk yard parts. And pieces from scrap metal yards. And a Sears oxy-acetylene torch and some welding practice. And a rented spray painter. And half of my Dad s 2-car garage (ie, paint booth). I did it. That s the short story. Fast Forward to January, Talking to my friend Art two weeks ago, the conversation turned to car clubs and membership. Turns out he belongs to four clubs! Why? He enjoys them, enjoys the people. But he s very selective he has a criteria: He only joins a car club if at least three people shake his hand and introduce themselves to him at his first meeting, or else it s his last. When they show a welcoming interest, they have earned his membership. At your next SJCC meeting, at the next event you attend, at the next meal you share with fellow members, talk to someone you don t know, especially those new in the last 2-3 years. Each month, read about the new members in the GS Membership article and make a point to talk to them. Learn faces and names in our Shutterfly ( photo page -- click on the SJCC Members button next to the Home button. (To get an SJCC Shutterfly account, contact Suzanne Ansley at suzvette01@hotmail.com.) 9 AMBASSADOR REPORT February 2014 Are you ready for a CARAVAN? Are your fingers starting to twitch and shake looking for the gearshift? Does your right foot keep pressing on the floor looking for the accelerator? If you are signed up for the Caravan Chat s, you probably have learned how to place 50 cubic feet of luggage into the rear of a Corvette convertible with the top down. The 20 th ANNIVERSARY NCM CARAVAN is less than seven months away. The number of SJCC caravan participants is up to 49. I spoke with Barren River Lodge and they are almost at 100% capacity. I told them we may need a couple more rooms and they agreed to hold back two more rooms for SJCC for a couple of weeks. I have included my list of SJCC caravan participants, please call or me if I have missed anyone or your plans have changed or you have decided to join us and need HOTEL or CARAVAN information. kbakenhus@att.net Cell: SJCC NCM ONE ACRE CLUB UPDATE Thanks to the generosity of the donors to the One Acre Club, as of we have raised $11, of the $15,000. Over the next six months we will have various items for sale, auction and always open to a donation to the One Acre Club in any amount. If you missed the January membership meeting, we handed out small pails for you to take home to throw your coins in and return them at the monthly meetings. I still have a few coin buckets if you need one. At the February membership meeting I plan to auction this autographed poster cover and poster from the November 2013 F1 Grand Prix races in Austin. Donated by Bill Heede.
10 I have a few of these sure to be, a TRUE SJCC COLLECTOR ITEM, 2014 Corvette atop of an authentic numbered brick from the original 1953 Corvette assembly plant in Flint, Michigan. The brick will come with a certificate of authenticity. I know you are asking yourself, How Do I get One of These? These are very limited and at the January membership meeting they were going like HOTCAKES at the IHOP. The only way to obtain one of these is by donating a minimum $200 to the One Acre Club. Now for those that have previously contributed, don t fret, your previous donation can be applied toward the $200. Please note, the Corvette is a 1:24 scale model, but the brick is actual brick size. I will also have a few 2014 dealer brochures for sale at $20 each. These brochures are full color and cram packed with many pictures that will have you wanting to run to your nearest Corvette dealer, of course that would be our club sponsor, AutoNation on the Gulf Freeway. In the March membership meeting we will be auctioning this beautiful 75 X92 quilt donated by Denise & Mike Munoz. All proceeds will go toward the SJCC One Acre Club. The quilt will be on display at the February & March membership meetings. For One Acre Club donations, please make checks payable to National Corvette Museum or NCM and forward them to me at a meeting or by mail. I will send the checks to the proper person at the NCM to ensure the donations are credited to the SJCC Any amount is appreciated, bring your donation to the club meetings or mail your donation to: Ken Bakenhus 3609 Pinemont Dr. Houston, Texas Save the Wave See you at the February meeting Ken One Acre Club fund. 13 FATHER AND SON THE ADVENTURE BEGINS, What could be better than picking up a new 2014 Corvette Stingray? How about picking up two 2014 Corvette Stingrays as a father and son duo. As soon as we saw the first pictures of the new 2014 Corvette Stingray we knew we were hooked! As more information started to roll out about the new Stingrays we decided that we had to have them. In June 2013 we finally made it out to some dealerships to pre order our cars. We opted to do a tandem Museum Delivery so we could pick them up from Kentucky and drive them back to Houston together. The wait was long, painful, and never seemed to end. We were on Chevrolet s website everyday and on the phone with them every other day looking for order updates. Finally the time had come and we got the update our cars were ready for pickup on November 7, The Museum Delivery was an amazing adventure. When we got to the museum we were instantly treated like kings. Apparently we are the only father and son duo to pick up cars together. The entire staff introduced themselves to us and welcomed us to our cars parked on display on Corvette Blvd. We also met our own personal tour guides who stayed with us throughout the entire day. After our morning introductions we were escorted over to the assembly plant for our VIP tours. Of course the first thing we noticed upon arrival was our name in lights above the door of the assembly plant. Taking a trip on the floor of the assembly plant was one of the coolest experiences we ve had. It was an intimate but laid back adventure as our personal tour guides took us around and showed us how the new Corvettes were built. We were able to meet and talk with some of the staff at the plant and we also watched the first Stingray Convertible, VIN #0001, run down the line. Truly a once in a lifetime experience. We made it back to the museum to start our museum tour. We were personally ushered through the entire museum from our very knowledgeable tour guides. The cars housed in this facility are nothing short of remarkable and it was a real pleasure to learn all the little details about each one. Like, did you know there is only one 1983 Corvette in existence, and the museum has it. Then, we moved onto the real exciting part of the day receiving our cars. We each got a personal walk through of our Stingrays and then finally we drove them out of the museum. When they drive a car out of the museum the whole staff comes to the floor and cheers you on as you ride out in style. Again, we felt like kings. We spent the next three days of our adventure driving back to Houston. We purposely took the long way home making stops in Tunica, Mississippi and Hot Springs, Arkansas. We made stops at every, and we mean every, rest stop along the way. As soon as we stopped the cars were mobbed by people asking questions, taking pictures, and wanting to hear the exhaust fire up. Watching the excitement on admirers faces was and still is an amazing feeling.
14 The pictures and the mobs never stopped around our cars. Every time we stopped at a restaurant we would watch the entire wait staff leave the restaurant to take pictures of our cars. This made for some slow service, but we didn t mind too much. Another new experience for us was getting pulled over by the cops so many times just to check out our cars. This was definitely a first for us and it was a little nerve racking since it happened often. We met one state cop in Arkansas that was ear to ear smiles about our cars. He was a motor head himself and was truly amazed at how beautiful the new Stingrays looked. We offered to race him in his hopped up dodge charger but he informed us that if he loses he will be pulling us over. We decided it was in our best interest to decline that offer. The rest of the drive was full of high speeds, cruising, lots of stops, and lots of paparazzi. It was an amazing trip that was made better by doing it as a father and son duo. Upon arriving home we instantly joined the San Jacinto Corvette Club, now the real adventure begins Adam Beaty Page Up Page Down 14
